“호텔에? 카네기 홀 쪽에서 누가 온 건가?”
이미 몇 번 있었던 일이었다.
전화는 다들 잘 받지 않기에, 핸드폰으로 메일을 보내는 것보다는 호텔로 직접 찾아오는 게 빠른 거리였으니까.
일행이 현재 묵고 있는 곳은 카네기 홀 바로 앞에 있는 파크하얏트 뉴욕. 오직 이동을 고려한 호텔 선정이었다.

하지만 몇 년 전, 일본에 베이스를 둔 한국의 어느 기업이 이 호텔을 인수했다는 소식에 어쩐지 가기가 싫어져 버린 것.
그래서 대안으로 선택한 게 바로 이곳이었다. 무난한(?) 체인 호텔이자 카네기 홀과 매우, 몹시 가까웠기에.
무려 길 하나 사이로 카네기 홀을 마주하고 있는, 카네기 홀 근처의 가장 가까운 5성 호텔.
더럽게 비싼데 영 별로라며 윤수는 불만스러워 보였지만, 자기 돈으로 낼 것 아니니 현명하게 입을 다물었다.
어쨌든 덕분에 일행은 카네기 홀과 엎어지면 코 닿을 거리에 위치해 있었다.

“설마 또 추가 공연 얘기하러 온 건 아니겠지…?”

원래 정작 연주 당사자는 잘 못 느끼는 법. 솔직히 이해가 잘 안 갈 정도였다.
하지만 아무리 거듭 요청을 해온다 한들 불가능한 건 불가능 한 일이었다.
벌써 이틀 후에 돌아가야 하는데, 아무리 같은 레퍼토리의 재공연이라도 당장 하루 만에 무대를 잡을 수는 없는 법. 최소한 티켓팅에 필요한 시간 여유는 있어야 할 것 아니겠는가.
일행 모두 아쉬운 마음이었지만, 어쩔 수 없었다. 서진을 대신할 존재를 절대로 구할 수 없을 테니까.
“카네기 쪽은 아닌 것 같던데?”
“그래?”
대충 겉옷을 주워입은 서진이 키를 챙겨 문을 나섰다. 보안이라면 워낙에 철저한 곳이니 방문자의 신원을 걱정할 필요는 없겠지.

로비로 내려간 서진을 맞이한 것은 다름 아닌 링컨 센터의 관계자라는 사람이었다.
“처음 뵙겠습니다. 미스터 한 되시지요?”
“예, 맞습니다만….”
데보라라고 이름을 밝힌 그녀는 링컨 센터의 공동 예술 감독이라고 자신을 소개했다.
“여기에 머무신다길래…, 이렇게 갑자기 찾아뵈어 대단히 실례했습니다. 워낙 사안이 급한지라…,”
‘와, 그게 여기저기 알려질 만큼 내가 유명인이었나?’ 하는 생각과 함께 서진이 고개를 끄덕였다.
사과와 함께 운을 뗀 그녀의 말은, 한마디로 요약하자면 급히 대타가 필요하다는 것이었다.
서진은 무척이나 당황스러웠다.
그도 그럴 것이, 그녀가 다급히 부탁하는 공연은 바로 내일이었으니까.
“당장 내일 공연의 대타를 부탁하신다고요? 그러니까, 협연자로서요?”
서진이 뉴욕필의 연주를 보러 가려 했던 바로 그 공연이었다.
“예, 정말 죄송한 부탁인 건 알지만, 상황이 상황인지라….”

원래 협연자로 서기로 했던 솔리스트가 갑자기 컨디션에 문제가 생기는 바람에 펑크가 났는데, 이제 와서 대체할 프로그램을 모색하거나 공연 자체를 취소하기엔 일이 커지니, 대타로 솔리스트로 서줄 협연자를 구하고 있다고.
“…한 상황에, 마침 미스터 한께서 뉴욕에 계신다는 이야기를 전해 듣고 이렇게….”
그녀는 링컨 센터 쪽 사람으로 카네기 홀과는 직접적인 관계가 없었지만, 예술계 바닥이 다 거기서 거기인지라 소식에 훤했다.
“하지만…, 음….”
서진은 여전히 고개를 갸웃했다.
“한데 원래 서기로 하셨던 분인 미스터 펄에 비하면 제가 이름값이 한참 모자랄 터인데요. 관객들의 입장을 생각하면 괜찮을지 모르겠네요. 제가 갑자기 곡을 준비해야 하는 건 둘째 치더라도요.”
이자크 펄. 장애를 딛고 세계적인 바이올리니스트 우뚝 선 것으로 이름 높은, 서진이 엄청나게 존경하는 인물이었다.
그리고 냉정하게 말해, 서진의 입지는 아직 그에 비할 바는 못 되었다.
“아닙니다. 카네기 홀에서의 공연, 저도 봤습니다. 저는 결코 그렇게 생각하지 않습니다.”
“…그래도, 이왕이면 저보다는…,”
“실은 주크먼 씨에게 먼저 연락을 해보았는데, 일정이 워낙 촉박한지라 어렵겠다는 연락을 받았습니다. 현재 주크먼 씨는 베를린에 일정이 있어 체류 중이거든요.”
“아….”
저 둘은 개인적으로 친분이 있는 사이이기도 하니, 아마도 제일 먼저 연락을 해본 모양이었다.
정확히는 주크먼이 링컨 측으로부터 연락을 받은 것은 어제에서 오늘로 넘어오는 자정, 수속에 걸리는 시간을 감안해도 베를린으로부터의 비행시간은 10시간 미만이니 불가능한 건 아니었지만, 그가 협연곡인 차이코프스키의 바이올린 협주곡을 마지막으로 연주했던 건 3년 전이었다.
불과 하루 전 연락을 받아, 3년 만에 전 악장을 연주해야 하는 것이란… 노령인 그의 나이를 고려하면 쉽게 수락하기 어려운 일일 터였다.
아무리 내로라하는 바이올리니스트라도, 무슨 곡이든 곧바로 다 연주할 수 있는 건 아니었다.
게다가 저 정도의 난곡이라면….
‘아무리 이전에 해 봤던 곡이라 해도 연습도 없이 갑자기 완벽히 연주해 내는 것은 불가능하지.’

지나치게 어려운 난이도로, 작곡 직후의 초연에서 온갖 악평을 받았던 곡.
오죽하면 초연을 부탁하며 작품을 헌정했던 연주자에게 거절당하고, 다른 이에게 부탁해 간신히 초연되었을까.
그렇게 겨우겨우 초연을 하긴 했으나, 신랄한 비판과 함께 공연은 망했다. ‘음악에서 악취가 난다’는 당대의 유명한 비평가의 평가는 상당히 충격적인 수준이었다.
우습게도 현재는 전공생이라면 어린 학생들도 누구나 하는 곡이었지만, 어쨌든 그 난이도가 어떤 수준인지 알게 해주기에는 충분한 일화였다.
덕분에 현재는 모차르트의 바이올린 협주곡 3~5번, 바흐 무반주 파르티타와 함께 전공생의 기본기 중 하나이자, 바이올린의 소리를 평가하기 위해 연주되는 곡으로 반드시 꼽히는 곡이었지만.
“그런데 저 역시 해당 곡을 마지막으로 연주한 건 조금 된 일이라….”
다행히 한 번 해본 적은 있었다. 작년인가, 어디에서였더라… 아무튼 유럽 어느 지역의 음악제에 초청을 받아 솔리스트로 연주한 적 있었던 것이다.
제네바 콩쿨 주최 측에서 우승 특전으로 마련해주었던 무대와는 별개의 개인 자격으로 참여했던 행사였는데, 희한하게도 그때도 굉장히 급히 부탁을 받고 무대에 올랐던 기억이 난다.
“제발 부탁드립니다. 부디 어떻게 좀… 안 될까요? 듣기로 미스터 한의 암보 능력이 굉장히 뛰어나다고 들었습니다만.”
급작스러운 협연에는 악보 문제도 있었다. 솔리스트는 기본적으로 암보(暗譜)를 원칙으로 했으니까.
아무리 한 번 외웠던 악보라도, 오래된 기억이라면 갑자기 생각이 나지 않을 수 있는 일.
젊은 연주자들이야 머리가 팽팽 돌아간다지만, 나이가 들면 아무래도 체력뿐 아니라 기억력도 희미해지기 마련이었다.
그러니 여러모로 서진이 최선의 대안인 상황. 이제 와서 외국에 체류 중인 다른 바이올리니스트를 급히 물색해 데려오느니, 이미 뉴욕에 있는 사람을 생각해 내는 게 당연했다.
아직 거장들처럼 수십 년의 이름값이 쌓인 게 아닐 뿐, 상대 역시 실력으로는 결코 뒤떨어지지 않았으니까.
‘아니, 어쩌면 그 이상일지도.’
“…아, 예….”
내가 암보 능력이 뛰어났던가…? 몰랐는데 암암리에 그런 소문이 나 있었나 보다. 그럴 만한 건덕지가 있었는지는 잘 기억이 안 나지만….
‘내가 가려 했던 공연에 내가 서게 되어버렸다니….’
보아하니 고민하고 답해주겠다고 말할 여유 따윈 없어 보였다. 안 되면 다른 사람을 컨택하거나, 공연 자체를 취소해야 할 테니까.
즉, 당장 결정을 내려야 하는 상황.
서진 역시 뉴욕필과는 첫 연주였고, 링컨 센터에서 솔리스트로 협연을 하는 건 처음이었다. 차라리 독주라면 모를까, 협연은 오케스트라와의 호흡 문제도 있고 고려할 것이 많았다. 게다가 지금 상황을 보아하니, 리허설조차 제대로 할 시간이 없는 듯한데….

마침 로비에 사람이 아무도 없어 서진은 호텔 측에 살짝 양해를 구하고 바이올린을 꺼내 들었다. 혹시 몰라 바이올린을 들고 내려온 차였던 것이다.

그녀의 눈에 이채가 서렸다. 쉽게 호언장담하는 대신 신중히 접근하는 태도에 더욱 믿음이 가는 것이었다.

기교적으로 어려운 부분이야 한두 군데가 아니었지만, 그중에서도 가장 어려운 이 부분만 해결되면 다른 부분은 다 할 수 있겠다 싶은 것이었다.
과르네리가 차분한 목소리로 노래하기 시작했다.

말도 안 되게 아름다운 소리에 그녀는 깜짝 놀랐다.
순간, 적막한 호텔 로비의 공기 자체가 달라지는 기분. 한 줄기 바이올린 소리에, 완전히 다른 세상이 펼쳐지는 기분이었다.
성경에서 나오는 천상의 음악이 바로 이런 소리일까…? 독실한 크리스천인 그녀는 불경하게도 그런 생각까지 떠올릴 정도였다.
