“나도 잘은 모르겠는데, 대충 네 곡을 듣고 꽂힌 감독이 뭔가를 뒤엎은 모양이야. 그래도 겨울 전에는 개봉 가능할 거라더군.”
때로는 모르는 게 약이었다.
“…그렇군요. 아무튼 이자크, 저는 잠시 한국에 다녀와야 할 것 같아요.”
“오, 공연이 있는 겐가?”
“공연이라기보다는… 뭐, 공연은 공연이네요. 청와대에 초청을 받아서요.”
“청와대라면… 오오, 영광인 일이로군!”
“하하. 네. 근데 별 대단한 건 아니고요…,”
정확히는 ‘청와대 개방 기념 열린음악회’에 연주자로서 초청받았다.
‘청와대’라는 단어가 들어가긴 하지만 국가 행사는 아니었고, 청와대 개방 기념으로 본관 앞 대정원에서 K-BS 교향악단의 열린음악회 특집 행사가 열리는 것이었다.
이번 음악회에는 서진뿐 아니라 한국의 유명한 스타 연주자들이 대거 초대되었다. 그리고 그중에는, 서진보다 먼저 퀸엘리자베스 콩쿨에서 1위를 차지했던 바이올리니스트 이지영씨도 있었다.
“면면을 보아하니 대단하지 않은 자리가 전혀 아닌데?”
“하하. 딱 한 곡 연주하고 오는 게 전부인걸요.”
“아무튼. 그럼 일정은 그게 전부인가?”
“아. 하나 더 있어요. 한예종에도 들를 예정이에요.”
한예종 초대 총장으로부터의 절박한 요청이 있었다.
미국도 그렇지만 한국 역시 촘촘하게 엮여 있는 인맥 사회였다. 건너 건너 다 연결되어 있는 세상인 것이다. 한예종의 총장인 그는 한때 K-BS 교향악단의 초대 음악감독직을 맡은 적도 있었는데, 이번에 서진이 K-BS 일로 잠시 귀국한다는 소식에 다급히 연락을 넣어온 것이었다.
“제가 도움이 될 게 있을지는 모르겠지만, 적어도 얼굴을 내비치는 것만으로도 의미가 있다면 모교를 위해 충분히 시간을 할애할 가치가 있을 것 같아서요.”
“호오….”
초대 총장인 그에게는 원대한 목표가 있었는데, 그는 한예종을 ‘해외 유학 갈 필요 없는 학교’로 만들고자 오래도록 노력해 왔다.
그가 맨 처음 그 이야기를 꺼냈을 때, 당시만 해도 그걸 진지하게 받아들이는 사람은 없었다. 그냥 높다란 꿈과 이상 정도로 치부할 뿐.
하지만 이제는 아니다. 그때만 해도 허황되어 보였던 그 말이 지금은 현실이 되어가는 상황. 그는 한 발자국 더 나아가 한예종을 역으로 세계에서 유학 오는 학교로 만들고자 했다.
그런 그의 뜻은 서진의 꿈과도 일맥상통하는 부분이 있었기에 반갑게 수락했다. 내년이면 타계하는 원로 교수의 요청을 외면하기란 쉽지 않기도 했고.
게다가 그는 음악적으로 추구하는 방향도 서진과 흡사했다. 서울대 교수로 있던 시절 그는 ‘한국음악’과 ‘음악적 모국어 찾기’에 매진했던 이력이 있었는데, 한때 우리의 소리에 대해 제법 진지하게 공부했던 서진은 그의 논문과 저서를 꼼꼼히 읽어본 적 있었다.
“그걸 위해 대학원 설립과 통합 캠퍼스 건립을 추진하고 있는 상황이라는데…. 과연 잘 될지는 모르겠네요. 이자크도 알겠지만 한국, 특히 서울의 부동산 문제는 심각한 수준인지라….”
국립대가 자리 잡을 터가 없어서 캠퍼스를 만들지 못하는 상황이라니….
한예종의 가장 큰 문제인 캠퍼스 문제를 어떻게 해결할지는 모르겠지만, 아무튼 오랜 숙원사업을 드디어 추진하려는 모양이었다.
듣자 하니 영부인도 참석하고, 외국의 귀빈들도 방문하는 등 꽤 큰 규모의 행사가 될 예정이라고.
“호오, 들어보니 이쪽이 오히려 VIP 행사에 가깝구먼?”
“네. 그럴 것 같아요. 저야 뭐 그냥 일개 게스트지만요.”
‘우리 학교를 빛낸 영예의 졸업생’ 정도의 타이틀로 자리하지 않을까 싶었다.
“…하하하. 자네는 참… 다 좋은데 자기 객관화가 좀 안 된단 말이지…?”

확실히 콩쿨 우승의 유명세가 크긴 큰 건지 서진에게는 끝도 없이 많은 공연 스케쥴이 잡혀 있었다. 얼마 전에 치른 카네기 홀에서의 우승 기념 연주회도 그중 하나였고, 그 외에도 수도 없이 많은 나라를 돌았다.
콘서트가 너무 많은 탓에 거의 사흘에 한 번씩 이 나라 저 나라로 옮겨 다니는 형국. 그 탓인지 한국에 도착했음에도 ‘귀국’했다는 감상보다는, 공연지 중 한 곳에 들른 느낌이 들었다.
청와대의 열린음악회는 예상대로 캐주얼한 분위기의 공연이었다. 국내의 유명한 젊은 스타들이 대거 출동한.
대통령이 사는 곳인 만큼 전면개방은 아니고, 이렇게 특별한 행사가 있을 때만 일부 개방되는 청와대였다. 물론 투어 자체는 상시 가능했지만 말이다.
서진은 청와대에 처음 와 보았다. 누구나 신청하면 투어가 가능하다지만, 살면서 그럴 여유가 없었다. 어릴 땐 가정형편 때문에, 그 후엔 바빠서.
오늘의 개방 장소는 청와대 대정원이었다.
특별히 마련된 무대 아래 객석에는 사람들이 가득 차 있었다. 공연은 클래식만이 아니라 다양한 장르로 구성되어 있었는데, 국악으로 유명한 가수도 있었고, 대중가요 가수도 여럿 보였다.
약간 평창 올림픽 무대의 소규모 버전 느낌이랄까.
클래식 쪽에서는 찬윤과 서진, 그리고 바이올리니스트 이지영씨가 초대받았다.
현재 20대의 젊은 음악가 중 가장 인지도가 높은 둘이다. 그리고 이지영 역시 같은 퀸엘 우승자로서 꽤 유명한 편이었고.
셋 외에도 국위 선양을 하고 돌아온 음악가들은 많았지만, 일정이 맞지 않는 건지 셋뿐이었다.
서진은 콩쿨 선배격인 지영과 함께 소개되었다. 연주 역시 함께할 예정이었고.

“나야말로. 소문 자자한 천재를 드디어 만나 보네.”
“제가 드릴 말씀인걸요.”

장 마리 르클레르(1697~1764)는 프랑스의 바이올리니스트 겸 작곡가였다. ‘프랑스의 코렐리’라는 별명을 가진 그답게 코렐리의 분위기가 느껴졌다. 거기에 더해 비발디의 색채까지.
‘바로크와 로맨티시즘이라….’
이번 공연의 부제였다.
중의적인 의미의 표제였다. 중간의 고전 시대는 빼고 바로크 시대와 낭만 시대를 의미하는 건지, 아니면 바로크 시대 내에서의 음악적 낭만을 이야기하는 건지.
모르겠지만 중요한 건 관객들에게 아름다움을 선사하는 것이었다. KBS 관현악단과 함께하는 가을밤의 낭만이 밤하늘을 수놓았다.
생소하면서도 어딘지 익숙한 멜로디. 사람들은 감미로움에 촉촉이 젖어 들어갔다. 바로 ‘바로크’라는 공통 분위기 덕에, 처음 듣는 곡이라도 어디선가 들어본 것 같은 느낌이 드는 것이다.
짧은 연주가 끝나고 다음 곡이 이어졌다.

부제가 부제인 만큼 선곡 역시 그 범위 내에서 이루어졌다. ‘바로크’와 ‘두 대의 바이올린’이라는 키워드 하면 빼놓을 수 없는 곡. 바이올린을 배운 이라면 모르는 이가 없는 바로 그 곡.
서진이 세컨을 맡았고, KBS 관현악단이 스즈키 교재에는 피아노 반주로 되어 있는 부분을 연주하며 웅장하게 뒤를 받쳤다.
일찍이 전공을 시작한 경우라면 한 자릿수 나이 때에 배우기도 하는 곡이기에 쉽게 생각하는 경우가 많지만, 특유의 바로크적 우아함을 구현해내기란 결코 쉽지 않았다.
하지만 역시 진정한 우승자의 내공은 뭐가 달라도 달랐다.
완벽하게 맞물려 들어가는 두 바이올린의 선율.
서진은 진심으로 놀랐다. 자신이야 회귀에 특수 능력까지 있어 이만큼의 경지까지 온 것이라지만, 그녀는 정말로 진짜배기였다.
처음으로 맞춰보는 호흡이었지만, 상대에게 소리를 맞추고 할 것도 없이 소리가 너무나도 조화롭게 어우러졌다.
하지만 서진은 그게 결코 거저 이루어진 일이 아님을 안다.

그럴 때 겉으로는 오히려 조금도 힘들지 않은 듯, 너무나 쉽게 해 보이는 느낌이 있으나, 그 가운데 특유의 비범함이 느껴지는 것이다. 어떠한 경지에 다다른 인간만이 낼 수 있는 독특한 분위기.
그녀에게는 바로 그런 게 있었다.
서진은 스스로를 돌아보며 자성했다. 최근 들어 약간 타성에 젖어, 일정에 떠밀리듯 살아오지 않았나.
음악에 대한 깊은 고뇌와 연구보다도, 외적인 일들에 좌지우지되어 시간을 채워온 느낌.
누가 뭐래도 결국 중요한 건 음악, 그 자체에 있는 것을.
그 어떤 화려한 이력이나 연주 경력이 아니라, 소리의 깊이가 중요한 것을.

아니었다.
이제는 체화되다 못해 완전히 제 것으로 자리 잡은 심상 능력에 더해, 어느 정도 완숙에 이른 연주 실력까지. 그로 인해 어느새 더 이상의 발전을 위한 치열한 노력을 기울이지 않았던 것 같다. 주변에서 다들 거장 대우해 준다고, 벌써 뭐라도 된 것처럼 안주하려 했다.
혼신을 다한 그녀의 소리를 듣고 그제야 깨달았다. 음악가의 본분은 죽을 때까지 오직 음악 그 자체에 있다는 것을. 오직 음악을 위해 매진하는 것.
거기에 어느 시점에서의 완성이란 없다. 10대의 소리와, 20대의 소리와, 30대, 40대… 전부 제각각 다르니까.
단순히 뭐가 더 낫다 아니다를 떠나, 나이대별로 다를 수밖에 없는 것이다. 어릴 적에는 순수함과 감수성, 그 무엇보다 강한 폭발적인 에너지가 있고, 세상 때가 묻고 머리가 굵어진 후에는 그만큼 세상을 보는 남다른 깊이가 소리에 담긴다. 마치 세월 속에 낡아가는 골동품처럼, 나름의 가치가 익어가기에.
원래도 깊은 울림을 자랑하던 서진의 선율이, 그러한 반성의 마음과 함께 더욱 무르익었다.
애절함과 부드러움이 담긴 하모니에 선선한 가을밤의 공기가 녹아들었다.
관객들은 어느덧 개방형 야외공연의 무대에 온 것이 아니라, 마치 콩쿨의 파이널 무대를 관람하기라도 하듯 진지한 표정이었다.

얼핏 비슷비슷한 곡이 연달아 나오는 터라 살짝 지겨울 법도 한데, 워낙 황홀하고 영롱한 소리에 사람들은 달빛에 젖어 드는 듯 흠뻑 빠져들었다.

“정말 좋은 시간이었어. 역시… 명성이 헛되지 않더라. 내가 참 배울 점이 많더라.”
“저야말로요, 선배님. 함께 호흡하는 것만으로도 귀중한 가르침을 주셨습니다. 많은 깨달음을 얻고 갑니다.”
정말로 충만한 시간이었다. 빠듯한 일정을 쪼개 귀국한 게 아깝지 않을 만큼.
