“서진 군. 내가 미스터 한을 이 먼 곳까지 와달라 간곡히 청한 이유가 실은 따로 있네. 서진 군이 우리 모차르테움의 악기로 공연을 하는 영상을 내 정말 몇 번이지 봤다네. 몇 번이고 거듭해 보고 또 보고… 그리고 그때마다 도저히 전율을 감출 수가 없었네.”

“그래서 결심했네. 이곳 모차르테움의 악기를 서진 군에게 부탁하기로.”
“네?”

이건 진짜 말도 안 될 정도로 파격적인 제안이었다.
모차르테움에서 재단 차원 교류가 아닌 타국인에게, 그것도 같은 유럽권이 아닌 나라 출신의 학생에게 악기를 대여해 준 적은 단 한 번도 없던 일이었다.
그나마 같은 유럽권이라면 워낙 국경 개념이 희박하게 따닥따닥 붙어있으니 출신을 덜 따지곤 하지만, 아시아권은 이야기가 다르다.
먼 동방의 소국의 연주자에게 이런 대우를 해준 일은 그야말로 유례가 없는 것이었다. 심지어 재단 교류가 아닌 개인 자격으로.
“어떤가? 이왕 온 김에, 나쁘지 않은 제안이라 생각하는데 말일세.”

훗날 영미권에서 이 멜로디에 반짝반짝 작은 별의 가사를 붙여 부른 것이 유명해지며, 원제보다‘ 작은별 변주곡’이라는 이름으로 널리 알려지게 된 것.

클레어는 사라 정보다는 덜 하지만 국내에서 상당한 이름값을 가진, 그리고 국제무대에서도 제법 이름이 알려진 바이올리니스트였지만, 최근 들어서는 오랜 슬럼프에 힘든 시간을 보내고 있는 중이었다.
빛나는 재능으로 어려서부터 탄탄대로였던 인생. 비록 중간에 부상이라는 큰 역경도 있었으나 잘 극복해 냈다. 다시 어린 시절을 되찾은 듯 오히려 모든 게 잘 풀리는 것 같았다.
그런데 어느 날 갑자기, 한계에 직면하기라도 한 듯 갑자기 슬럼프가 왔다. 사람들의 찬사에도 불구하고 오히려 압박감과 스트레스만 늘었다. 아무리 해도 마음에 드는 연주가 나오지 않았다.
