안 그래도 장삿길이 막힌 것에 기분이 저조하고 답답한 찰나 끼어든 제3자에 일본상인들은 퉁명스럽게 말하려다 상대의 복장이 딱 봐도 귀티가 난 것을 확인하곤 일단 자세를 고쳐 조심스레 물었다.
“누구… 십니까?”
“나는 주변에선 정 대인(大人)이라 부르는 자로 서해와 벽란도를 통해 장사를 하고 다니는 상단의 주인일세. 금주가 동경으로 승격되었다기에 이문이 있는가 왔다가 왜국의 상인들 갑자기 곡을 하는 모습들이 보여 의아하여 묻는 것이네. 만약 괜찮다면 술이라도 한잔 사줄 터이니 연유를 알려줄 수 있겠는가?”
“…….”
그 사내의 말에 일본 상인들은 서로 눈치를 보았다.

“그렇습니다. 정 대인. 우리들은 이제 다음부터 먹고 살기가 막막합니다.”
“크으. 작년 초에만 하여도 이러지 않았던 관세가 갑자기 증가했지. 이제는 송과의 무역도 막혔습니다. 앞으로 어찌해야 하는지….”
“거래가 막힌 것도, 막힌 것이지만 나는 영주(=다이묘(大名))님의 분노도 걱정입니다.”
일본 상인들은 기꺼이 술을 받아마시고 사연과 함께 푸념을 늘어놓았다.
어차피 현재 처한 상황을 타개할 대책이 그들에게 없는 지금 술이라도 마셔 넋두리라도 하는 것이 마음의 위안을 조금이라도 얻는 것이 나았기 때문이다.
“허어. 그러니까. 귀국의 성주(=다이묘)들은 (일본)조정 몰래 진봉선 무역외에도 그대들을 보내 받게 한단 말인가?”
“그렇습니다. 아국에서 고려와 송의 물품들은 없어서 못 파는 물건입니다. 특히 송상들도 아국에 많이 오가며 거래를 해온 것이 현 상황일진데 사태가 이리되었으니 영주님들이 어떻게 나오실지….”
“더 큰 문제는 이 문제를 저희들에게 떠넘길까. 그것이 무섭습니다.”
술이 들어가고 속의 울분을 마음껏 말할 수 있는 것은 심기(心氣)에 이로운 일이었지만, 그렇게 토로하고 연거푸 들이마셔도 결국 현실에서 바뀌는 것이 없다는 데 생각이 미치니 상인들의 가슴 속에는 풀린 분기만큼 고스란히 울분이 돌아와 다시 표정이 어두워졌다.
이때 정대인이라 불린 자는 그렇게 한참이나 그들의 넋두리를 들어주더니 어느 순간 딱하다는 표정을 지으며 입을 열었다.
“…들어보니 내가 그대들에게 좋은 제안을 할 수 있을 것 같은데 만약 동한다면 대답해 주게.”
“제안이라굽쇼?”
“그렇네. 만일 성사만 된다면 나는 물론이고 그대들의 막힌 숨구멍도 트일 수 있을 것이네.”

다음 날. 일본 상인들은 하루 전 자신들을 내친 판관이 부른다는 소식에 다시 관아에 왔다가 놀랄 소리를 들어야 했다.
“너희가 그렇게 애걸복걸하여 내 방책을 구상하였으니 듣고 선택하라. 지금 너희가 송의 물품을 사는 방도는 이제 4가지 방도가 있다.
첫째는 가장 간단하다. 아조로 들어온 송의 품목들을 너희들이 아조에서 송의 품목들을 사는 것이다. 다행히 금주가 경으로 승격하여 이전보다 많이 들어오게 될 것인바 너희들에게도 이로울 것이다.
다음 방도로는 아조의 거대 행수가 말하길 너희가 바라는 품목을 동경 관청에 신청을 한다면 호부에서 그에 따라 아조 상인들로 하여금 송에서 구매한 뒤 너희들에게 줄 것이라 하였다. 대금은 반절은 선 지불하고 남은 반절은 품목을 받은 후 지불하게 되는 식이다.”
“으음….”
이른바 송의 물품을 일본 상인들이 직접 구하는 것이 아니라 고려에서 구하는 중계무역(中繼貿易)이었다.
그러나 전자는 소상들이면 모를까 십수 명이 오가거나 대규모 거래가 오가는 무역을 하기엔 이것으로 오랫동안 계속하기는 어려움이 없잖아 있었다.
후자도 후자대로 전자와 매한가지로 고려가 전적으로 구매하고 여기에 되팔기 때문에 중간에 떼어먹히는 양이 얼마나 많을지 겁이 나는 것도 있었다.
“세 번째는 우리 아조에서 아조에 방문한 송상들과 교역을 하는 것이다. 이것은 벽란도에서 여러 나라의 상인들이 교역을 허가하고 있으니 송상과 왜상들이 교역을 한다 한들 막지 않을 것이다.”
이것은 앞서 2개와 달리 직접 상인들과 만나 장사를 할 수 있었고 상대의 여하에 따라 나름 큰 규모의 거래도 성사될지 몰랐다.
물론 고려에서 자신들이 바라는 송상과 만나는 것도 쉽지 않은 일이지만 이것은 고려상인들에게 중개를 부탁하면 될 일이긴 했지만, 이것도 일본상인들은 송으로 넘어가지는 못한다는 단점이 남아 있었다.
“마지막으로 너희를 송에 데려가는 법인데, 이것은 본래 너희 나라와 송의 문제이니 아조가 해결할 수는 없는 법이다. 그러나 방도가 아예 없는 것은 아니다. 너희들도 부용국(附庸國)이 무엇인지는 알 것이다.
부용국(附庸國)은 대국의 힘이 없으면 살아갈수 없는 나라인데 그 옛날 삼한이 통일 되기 전 탐라나 옛 신라, 가야는 백제나 고구려의 부용국에 가까운 시절이 있었다.
이들은 힘이 없고 지리적으로도 멀고, 홀로 서방의 대국에 가는 것조차 힘이 들어 곁에 있는 강국과 대국의 도움을 받아 함께 도해하였다고 하였다. 실제 옛 신라와 너희 왜국도 백제국의 도움으로 서토에 간 적이 있지 않느냐?
이와 같은 사례가 있으니 너희 상인들도 아조의 상인들이 건너갈 때 인솔을 받는다는 전제하에 함께 도해(渡海)한다면 교역을 할 수 있을 것이다. 이리한다면 송에서도 너희를 고려 상인으로 취급해야 하니 감히 쉬이 내치지는 않을 것이다.”
“저, 정말이옵니까?! 나리?”
일상들의 면면에는 화색이 돌았다.
전자 2개가 중계무역이라면 후자의 두 방도는 고려가 일본 상인들에게 중개무역(仲介貿易)을 권하는 것이었는데, 중계무역이 거래처와 직접적으로 얼굴을 마주 보고 할 수 없는 것이라면 중개무역은 고려를 통해 직접 만나 교역을 틀 수 있는 이점이 있었기 때문이다.
그리고 자연히 대규모 거래와 자세한 요구가 오가는 장사라면 대면하지 않는 중계무역보단 직접적으로 대면하여 조율이 원할한 중개무역이 훨 나은 것이다.
무엇보다 송에 직접 갈수 있다는 조건은 일본 상인들에겐 정말 썩 구미가 땡기는 것이었는데 이미 입조와 진상을 명목으로 고려를 오간 것이 부지기수였는데 여기에 고려 상단의 휘하로 간다는 것이 무슨 큰 무리가 있겠는가.
물론 고개도 적당히 숙이는 모양새와 함께 일부 마진(일종의 수수료)을 적당히 주긴 해야겠으나 이윤을 얻을 수 있을 것이 분명했고, 무엇보다 직무역의 길도 완전히 단절되는 것을 막을 수 있었다. 그것만이 아니다.
인근 바다에서 고려 선박이 위엄이 어느 정도인지 일본 상인들 중 모르는 이가 없었다.
이 때문에 송으로 가는 일본 상인들 조차 고려 선박을 자주 이용하지 않던가. 그리고 고려 상단의 인솔하에 간다는 것은 반대로 고려의 비호를 받게 되는 것이니 더욱 안전함에 만전을 기할 수 있는 것이었다.

“…으음.”
“그러니 만약 너희가 이 일만 잘한다면 너희를 하나의 상단으로 취급하여 아조에서 장사를 할 때 상세를 감하고, 일부는 본조의 상인들 건널 때 함께 대동하여 대국과 교역을 할수 있게 힘을 써보겠다.”

“어제 우리가 본 정 대인이란 자가 수를 쓴 게 아니겠는가? 어제 술판에서 자기가 한번 힘을 써보겠다고 그리 호언장담하지 않았나?”
“그렇다면 저 정 대인이라는 자의 정체가 도대체 누구란 말인가? 우리가 내건 뒷돈은 받지도 않는 깐깐한 저 판관 나리가 저렇게 나오다니 말이야.”
자신들이 그렇게나 간청했을 때는 눈 하나 깜짝하지 않던 판관이 갑자기 자신들을 불러 방도를 마련하고 있다고 말하고 있으니 기이하지 않을 노릇이 없었다.

“유수?! 판관도 아닌 유수 나리께서 직접 나와 맞이하였다고? 도대체 누가 방문하였길래?”
“그것은 못 들었네. 그러나 내가 그걸 듣고 모르긴 몰라도 아주 대단한 거물이라는 것을 직감은 했지. 그래서 또 사람들과 근방에 수소문하여 알아보았는데… 자네들은 그 소문 듣지 못했나?”
“아, 그 사람 진짜 뜸 들이는군. 도대체 무슨 소문인가?”
“아직 확정이 된 것은 아니나, 지금 고려 황실의 인척(姻戚) 한 분이 동경에 오셨다는 것이네. 그것도 고려 태자의 장인 되는 분이 말이야.”
“서, 설마. 자네 지금….”
어제 자신들과 대작을 한 이가 그렇게 높은 사람일지 모른다는 말에 상인들의 입이 쩌억 벌려지는 것은 당연지사였다. 설명을 한 상인도 그것을 깨닫곤 다급히 입을 막고 주변 눈치를 살폈다.
“쉿! 입 조심하게. 아직 확정된 건 아니라 하지 않았나!”
입이 막힌 상인이 눈을 위아래로 끄덕이며 동의하자 틀어막은 상인도 손을 치웠다. 자유로워진 상인은 목소리를 낮추고는 재차 물었다.
“…크흠흠. 알겠네. 그럼 심증은 둘째치고 정 대인이 무엇 때문에 우리에게 접근을 했다 생각하는가?”
“아마도 어제 말씀하신 것이 거짓은 아닌 것 같네.”
“그렇다면 정말로 우리가 딱해서란 말인가?”
그 반문에 주변 상인들은 물론 대화를 나누던 상인도 그를 한심하게 쳐다보곤 말했다.
“이 한심한 사람아. 이문(利文) 문제를 말하는 것이네.”
“…이문 말인가?”
“그렇네. 만일 정 대인이 진짜 고려 태자의 장인이라면 금상의 주인디 되는데 내 듣자하니 금상은 지금 서경과 북방의 상권을 꽉 쥐고 있다고 하네. 그런 상황에서 금주가 동경으로 승격을 하였으니 이제 남방의 상권에도 눈독을 들이고 있는 것이 아니겠는가?”
“그렇다면 직접 가면 되지 않는가?”
“이 사람아. 우리가 송에 한, 두 번 갔는가? 이번에 문제가 생겨 단절이 돼버리긴 했으나 오랜 교역 끝에 우리와 인연이 있거나 안면이 있는 송상들이 많네. 그에 비해 정 대인은 금인 출신이라 송인들과 거래를 튼 적이 없고 말이네.”
“즉, 우리를 통해 송상들과 안면을 익히고 거래를 트겠다는 것인가?”

일본 상인들은 고개를 끄덕이고 있자 이번에는 고려와 무역을 집중하는 상인도 입을 열었다.
“내 생각에는 그것 외에도 있다고 생각하네.”
“그건 또 무슨 말인가?”
“정 대인이 어젯밤 이야기하신 것이 기억나는가? 금주가 동경으로 승격이 되자 왔다고 말일세. 그말은 반대로 해석하자면 지금까지 동경의 장사터에 손길도 영향이 없었다는 것이 아닌가?”
“그렇지. 그게 무슨…. 아! 아아! 설마! 그런 뜻인가?”
“그렇네. 그대들이야 고려를 송에 가는 기착지 정도로만 쓰고 있지만 우리는 고려에서 장사를 하고 있지 않은가? 그렇다면 그대들이 송상에 안면이 있듯이 우리도 이곳 근방 상인들과는 안면이 있네. 거기다 우리들이야 말로 벽란도나 팔관회, 절일 등을 제외하면 본국의 물품들을 가장 많이 가져오지 않겠는가?”
“오호라! 즉, 정 대인은 우리를 통해 고려 내에서 풀리는 우리나라의 품목들을 독점 혹은 장사에 주도권을 쥐려는 심산이라는 것이구만!”
“그렇지! 그러니 정 대인에게도 이문이 남는 장사가 아닐수 없지 않은가?”
일본 상인들은 모든 것이 이해가 되었다는 듯이 고개를 끄덕였다. 무릇 ‘무상의 선의는 없다.’ 라는 말처럼 이유없는 호의를 경계하라는 말이 있는데 장사치들은 ‘무상의 선의’를 무척이나 경계하고 두려워 했따. 그런데 정 대인이란 자가 이러한 목적이 있다는 것을 간파하였으니 드디어 안심 할수 있었던 것이다.
“결국 진짜 정 대인이 고려 태자의 장인이 맞다면, 그리고 정 대인의 상단과 함께 간다면 송에서도 어찌 못할 것이라는 말도 마냥 허세가 아니란 말일세. 정 대인이 말한 대로 한다면 가능성이 있다는 것일세.”
“그리고 어차피 우리에겐 다른 길이 없지 않은가?”
“……그렇다면 문제는 결국 입조인데.”
그 말에 상인들은 다시 조용해졌다. 쉽지 않은 일이었지만 어제와 같은 막막함은 느껴지지 않았다.
“정 대인의 말씀이 사실이라면 어찌해 볼 만하지 않겠는가?”
“그럴 것이네. 이야기를 들어보니 조정의, 덴노 폐하께서 보내는 사람이 아니더라도 어지간한 고관이 나라 이름으로 보내기만 해도 된다 하였으니 이 정도면 쉽지는 않아도 수는 있을 것일세.”
“우리가 다이묘님들께 말해봅시다.”
“그대들 중 요사아키 겐킨이라는 자를 아는 자 있소?”
“요시아키? 그 대(代)를 거쳐 송과 거래를 하는 그자 말이오? 그자는 왜 그러오?”
“내가 마지막으로 출항할 때 근래 들어 요시아키 겐킨이라는 자가 대관을 설득하려고 안간힘을 쓰고 있다고 하오.”
“…안 그래도 작년부터 송행(宋行)을 멈추었다길래 이상함을 느꼈는데 설마….”
“그 가문은 언제나 대비에 철저한 자이니 분명 이번 사태도 예견하였을 가능성도 있소.”
“…그와 함께 입조를 청해보자는 말이오?”
