나는 귓가에 울리는 걸걸한 목소리에 귀를 틀어막았다. 아냐, 나는 아무것도 안 들려. 몰려오는 피로에 순응하며 꿋꿋하게 눈을 감은 나는 한숨을 푹 쉬었다. 물먹은 솜처럼 팔다리가 늘어졌다. 요새 몸이 오지게도 피곤했다. 나에겐 휴식이 절실히 필요하다고.
몽롱한 의식 사이로 바다 냄새와 이끼가 낀 것 같은 꿉꿉한 냄새가 느껴졌다. 웅성거리는 목소리와 파도 소리가 귓가에 부딪혔다. 물거품이 스러지는 소리가 지나치게 선명히 귓가에 눌어붙었다가 사라졌다.
파도 안의 기포가 비명을 지르며 터져나갔다. 그 소리를 자장가 삼아 눈이 다시 거의 감길 즈음이었다. 동시에 비명처럼 누군가 소리를 질렀다.
“로트! 일어나!”
“아……, 도멤, 저 개새…….”
내게 저렇게 소리를 지를 인물이 달리 누가 있겠는가? 나는 귀를 틀어막다가 날카롭게 눈을 찌르는 햇빛에 인상을 찌푸렸다. 모포 사이로 유리병의 주둥이 같은 것이 비죽 튀어나와 있었다. ……여기에 이런 게 있었나? 모포를 걷어보자 웬 유리병이 있었다. 유리병 안에는 칠흑색 피네스
