102화 큰 대회라도 하는 거 아닐까요?
안 그래도 늘 필립은 내게 소통이 중요하다고 말해 주는 편이었다.
SNS라니. 그거야말로 진짜 다른 이들과 소통을 하는 게 주된 일 아니겠는가.
‘세상 참 요지경이란 말이지.’
손가락 하나로 얼굴도 보지 못한 이들과 소통을 할 수 있다니. 이전 생에서는 감히 상상치도 못한 일이었다.
‘내가 메일까지는 쉽게 배웠는데……. 이건 아직도 익숙해지지가 않네.’
주변 친구들이 죄다 SNS를 했으니, 당연히 나 또한 거기 노출될 수밖에 없었다. 머리로는 SNS에 대해 누구보다 잘 아는 상태란 뜻.
그러나 조선인이었던 내 특징이 어디 가는 건 아닌 모양인지. 내게 이 분야는 여전히 낯설기 그지없었다.
진작부터 SNS들을 하지 않는 나를 아는 필립. 그는 종종 기회가 있을 때마다 내게 이걸 권하는 중이었다.
“추후 한 번쯤 시도해 보시는 것도 괜찮습니다.”
“이미 몇 군데는 가입은 되어 있는데요.”
문제는 그거였다. 정말로 딱 가입만 되어 있다는 것. 혹시나 싶어 하는 정보의 수집용일 뿐. 진정한 의미에서 SNS를 활용하는 건 아니었다.
“근데 정말 가입만 되어 있고, 딱히 뭘 많이 하지는 않아서요.”
“그건 작가님께서 너무 바쁘셔서 그러시죠.”
“……아무래도 제가 좀 바쁜 편인 거 맞죠?”
볼을 긁적거리며 대답했다. 분명 학교 다니는 것과 그림만 그리는 것 같은데, 왜 이 정도로 바쁜지 알 수가 없었다.
“당연한 거 아닙니까? 어지간한 전업 화가 스케줄 저리 가라 할 정도로 활동하고 계시니까요.”
“전업 화가요? 제가 전업 화가잖아요?”
이전 생부터 나란 존재는 꾸준하게 그림쟁이였다. 다른 말로는 화가라고 불리는 존재.
그런데 어지간한 전업만큼 바쁘다니. 그건 바꿔 말하면 현재의 난 전업이 아니라는 소리 아닌가.
“예, 그 와중에 학교도 다니고 계시니 바쁠 수밖에요.”
“어, 학교요.”
그러고 보니 사회적인 내 본직업은 아직 학생이었다. 조만간 고등학생에서 대학생으로 바뀐다고 해도 학생인 건 변함이 없었다.
이해했다는 듯이 고개를 끄덕이는 날 보며 필립은 줄줄이 내 일정을 읊어 대었다.
“아트 페어는 물론, 오대전자와의 협업까지 하고 계신 와중에 전시회까지 진행 중이시니. 몸이 여러 개여도 모자랄 지경이시죠.”
저렇게 들으니 실제보다 더 하는 일이 많아 보였다. 확실히 내가 할 때와 남이 하는 이야기를 들을 때는 달랐다.
“하물며 작가님의 예비 선배님들께서도 작가님을 필요로 하시는 모양이시니.”
그 말을 들으며 난 다시 종이로 시선을 돌렸다. 각기 다른 글씨체로 빼곡하게 적혀 있는 아이디들이 재미있었다.
“작가님께서 이 중 하나라도 하실 거라고 여기신 모양입니다.”
“……미안한데요. 하나도 안 해서.”
누구의 말처럼 SNS가 시간 낭비라고 생각해 하지 않는 것이 아니었다. 내 경우는 정말로 그걸 할 시간이 턱없이 부족했다.
기본적으로 꾸준하게 들어가서 관리를 해 줘야 하는 게 SNS라고 알고 있었으니까.
학교와 작업실에서만 주로 있는 내가 그럴 시간이 어디 있겠는가.
그나마 틈틈이 짬 나는 시간으로 미술 공부를 하기에도 바빴으니. 그 외에는 다른 그림을 보거나 영상들을 시청하는 게 낙이었다.
‘그러고 보니, 난 취미도 그림 구경하는 거긴 하네.’
직업이 그림을 그리는 일이고, 취미가 남의 그림을 구경하는 것이었기에. 다른 또래의 아이들처럼 그쪽에 열을 올리기 어렵긴 했다.
“근데요. 왜 이렇게까지 해서 절 만나려고 하는 걸까요? 에일대 학생들이면, 몇 달 뒤에는 어차피 볼 텐데.”
미국의 신규 학기가 시작하는 9월이 몇 달 후였다. 그때 입학할 예정인 나였기에. 난 이렇게까지 줄줄이 연락처를 적은 이유를 짐작할 수 없었다.
‘하물며 지금은 아직 학기 중 아닌가? 설마 수업이라도 빠지고 온 거야?’
서울에서와 달리 뉴욕에서 하는 내 전시회 시작 날짜는 월요일. 즉, 일반적으로는 학교 수업이 있을 법한 평일이었다.
그런데도 드로잉 퍼포먼스까지 보러 오다니. 그것도 오직 날 만나겠다는 일념 하나로.
생각할수록 이해가 되지 않았다. 그렇기에 고개를 갸웃하며 그 종이를 노려보는 중이었다.
“잘은 모르지만, 정말로 작가님을 꼭 만나고 싶었나 보죠. 그것도 매우 급하게.”
“으흠.”
“미대생들이 이렇게 올 정도면, 뭔가 큰 대회라도 하는 거 아닐까요?”
“대회요?”
“미국은 학교 대항인 게 꽤 많거든요. 대표적으로는 스포츠가 그런 편이긴 한데.”
그러면서 필립은 간단하게 설명을 시작했다. 미국의 예체능계에 대한 관심. 그리고 학교 대항전이 가지는 의미를.
“일등은 체육계이긴 한데, 미술계도 경쟁인 건 비슷하죠. 한 학교가 두각을 보이면, 상대적으로 다른 학교는 뒤처지기 마련이니까요.”
세계 어느 곳을 가든 통용되는 법칙이었다. 경쟁이 있는 이상, 어쩔 수 없는 일이기도 했다.
‘경쟁이라.’
최고가 되기 위한 경쟁. 확실히 다시 태어난 이 시기는 조선보다 경쟁이 심화된 사회였다. 신분으로 인해 경쟁의 숫자를 제한시켰던 과거와 달리 그야말로 무한 경쟁이었기에.
‘그러고 보니, 나도 곧 경쟁을 해야 하지?’
솔직히 워낙 기간을 넉넉하게 줬기 때문일까. 난 아직 스마트폰에 대해선 별다른 생각이 없었다.
당장에 급한 아트 페어부터 해야 한다고 여겼으니까. 즉, 상대적으로 느슨한 마음이 있었던게 사실이었다.
하지만 내 선배가 될 이들도 경쟁에 이기기 위해 아직 후배도 아닌 사람을 찾아 이렇게 연락처를 남겼다.
나 또한 아직 그 상대는 모르지만 경쟁을 한다는 건 확실했으니. 이왕 한다면 이겨야 하는 만큼 노력해야 하지 않겠는가.
‘오대전자에서 아직 협업 상대를 공개하지 않은게 문제긴 한데, 뭐. 이리된 거 누가 되었든 승리해야지.’
할아버지께서도 걱정하셨다. 다른 작가나 브랜드와 함께 출시될 경우 비교되기 딱 좋다고.
‘조만간 한번…… 먼저 만나 볼까?’
상대가 에일대의 학생들이라면 어차피 곧 볼 이들이긴 했다.
하지만 만약 필립의 말처럼 이 예비 선배들이 뭔가 경쟁을 하기 위해 찾아온 것이라면, 이건 내게 또 다른 영향을 줄 수 있었다.
다른 영향. 그건 즉 색다른 영감을 만드는 일이란 의미였다. 사실 누구나 아는 것처럼 그림에는 영감이 중요했다.
그러나 인간인 이상 늘 새로운 영감을 끊임없이 떠올리긴 어려웠다. 그럴 때 필요한 게 새로운 정보를 머리에 주입시키는 것이었으니.
‘이번에는 두 번째 방법을 써 보는 거로 하지, 뭐.’
원래 조선에서부터 영감을 얻기 위해 주로 택했던 방법은 두 가지 정도였다.
하나는 다른 사람들 구경하기. 시전을 떠돌아다니거나 기방을 간 이유가 이것이었다. 사람들을 구경하기에 조선에서는 가장 좋은 곳들이었으니까.
그리고 두 번째는 직접 다른 존재와 대화해 보는 것이었다. 그게 나와 다른 새로운 사람일수록 좋았다. 때때로 생각지도 못한 실마리를 새로운 사람과의 만남을 통해 얻을 수 있었기에.
그런 의미에서 보면 에일대 선배들은 딱 좋았다. 같은 전공이기에 어느 정도의 생각도 공유할 수 있는 이들.
그러나 내게는 아직 미지에 가까운 에일대에 속해 있는 만큼 새로운 존재들이었으니까.
결심을 굳힌 난 메일을 열었다. 이런 내 행동을 본 필립은 좀 더 가까이 다가와 물었다.
“메일로 하시게요?”
“이쪽이 제겐 편해서요.”
당장에 전화를 하는 것보다 처음은 역시 메일이 좋았다. 고리타분하다고 해도 할 수 없었다.
기록의 나라라고까지 불리던 조선에서 산 내게 제일 익숙한 것. 그게 바로 글로 쓰는 동시에 어느 정도 격식을 갖출 수 있는 이 메일이었기에.
“그러지 말고 작가님. 이참에 SNS 한번 제대로 해 보시죠. 저희가 도와드리겠습니다.”
“도와준다고요? 어떻게요?”
“어떻게냐니요. 관리를 도와드리는 거죠.”
그 뒤에 이어진 설명이 꽤 길었다. 이 모든 걸 들은 난 새삼 문화 충격에 휩싸였다.
‘본인의 SNS도 남에게 그렇게까지 맡긴다는 말이야?’
유명인들은 종종 그렇게 많이 한다는 말을 들으며 난 기가 막혔다. 저게 낙관이나 도장을 그냥 주는 것과 뭐가 다르다는 말인가.
‘허어, 아무리 믿을 수 있는 상대라고 해도 그렇게 온전히 넘기다니.’
혼란에 빠져 있는 사이에도 필립의 제안은 계속되었다.
“사실 요즘 화가들은 인플루언서에 가깝습니다. 그렇기에 개인 방송 활동도 하고, 다양한 형태의 소통도 하죠. SNS는 그중 가장 손쉬운 수단이고요.”
‘개인 방송이라…….’
너트뷰 같은 걸 말하는 모양이었다. 확실히 그건 나쁘지 않아 보였다.
생생한 풍속화를 좋아하기 때문일까. 난 종종 멍하니 너트뷰를 통해 세상을 보는 걸 즐겼다. 이 시대의 놀이 중 그거만큼 재미있는게 드물었기에.
‘그렇다고 해도 낙관, 아니 아이디를 다 넘길 수는 없지. 내가 할 수 있을 때 하는 게 제일이야.’
“뭐. 정말 할지는 한번 고민해 보기로 하고, 일단은 그냥 메일로 할래요. 역시 아직은 이게 편하네요.”
결론을 내린 난 내 의지를 전달했다. 짧게 말하면, 당장은 할 수 없다는 소리였으니.
이런 내 말을 들은 필립은 언제든 편하실 때 하시라는 듯 입가에 미소를 지었다.

최근 연락을 했기에 내 전시회 일정을 나만큼이나 잘 알고 있으신 분. 그게 바로 에드워드 감독님이셨다.
미국에 와서 꼭 본인에게 시간을 내 달라 이야기하셨던 감독님. 당연히 난 만난 직후 그 이유부터 물어보았다. 호기심을 해결하고 싶었으니까.
“사실 이런 좋은 소식은 꼭 얼굴을 뵙고 직접 전해 드리고 싶었습니다.”
“좋은 소식이요?”
앞에 놓인 커피를 한 모금 마신 에드워드 감독님. 그러더니 이내 양손을 벌리며 기쁜 듯 미소를 지으셨다.
“예! 솔직히 작가님은 어찌 생각하실지 모르겠지만, 저로서는 진짜 엄청난 이슈입니다.”
대체 뭐길래 이렇게까지 뜸을 들이시는 건지. 예전의 성격 급한 나였으면, 장유유서고 뭐고 당장에 빨리 말하라고 추궁했을 속도였다.
“후후후, 저희 영화인 ‘이면’이 올해 칸 영화제 경쟁 부문에 진출하게 되었습니다!”
이면. 내 그림인 경화수월이 나온 감독님 영화의 제목이었다.
칸 영화제 경쟁 부문이라니. 이렇게 내게 꽤 낯선 단어가 튀어나올 때마다 난 손이 근질거렸다.
이 시대의 최대 문물이라고 할 수 있는 스마트폰을 통해 정보를 좀 찾아보고 싶어지니까.
‘칸이라. 정확하게는 기억이 나지 않지만, 어디 큰 곳이라고 들은 것 같긴 한데.’
“오, 축하드립니다.”
반사적으로 곧바로 축하의 말부터 건넸다. 잘은 몰라도 좋은 일이니, 에드워드 감독님이 이렇게 말한 것이리라.
‘영화제면, 분명 TV에서 본 기억이 있긴 해. 근데 경쟁 부문은 뭐지?’
가끔 부모님이 시청하시는 걸 본 기억이 났다. 그렇기에 난 영화제가 뭔지는 알고 있었다. 그런데 그 뒤는 알아듣기 어려웠으니.
‘경쟁 부문이라고 하는 걸 보니, 비경쟁 부분도 있는 건가.’
이런 생각이 제일 먼저 든 나였다. 분명 나름대로 잘 대처했다고 생각했다.
하지만 배우들의 연기를 보고 감독 생활을 하고 있는 감독님에게는 다르게 보인 모양이었으니.
“역시 작가님. 이 정도로는 놀라지 않으시는군요.”
곧바로 내가 별로 놀라지 않았다는 것을 알아차리셨다. 뜨끔한 기분이 들어 얼른 변명을 시도했다.
“아뇨, 놀랐습니다. 정말로요.”
“후후후, 괜찮습니다. 이건 사실 제게 좋은 소식이고, 작가님은 안 놀라실 수도 있죠.”
내가 더 뭐라고 변명을 하려는 그때. 감독님의 입에서 진짜 본론이 쏟아졌다.
“하지만 이건 작가님께서도 꽤 놀라실 겁니다!”
