126화 미술이 그렇게 좋은가?
이곳 미국에서 내 이름은 윤성 신이었다. 그렇기에 내 순번은 다른 학생들보다 뒤쪽이었으니.
‘흐음.’
그렇기에 난 다른 아이들의 발표를 먼저 볼 수 있었다. 과연 어떤 의견이 나올지 기대한 것도 잠시. 저절로 표정이 애매해질 수밖에 없었다.
‘역시 전공이 아니라서이려나.’
미술이란 분야는 오묘했다. 관심을 가질수록 더 많은 것이 알게 되고 더 다양한 게 보이는 세계였으니.
그런 의미에서 보면 미술에 대해 잘 모르면 모를수록 이 과제가 어려웠을 수도 있었다.
기술적인 문제를 지적하는 아이들. 내 앞에 발표한 세 명이 제시한 약점은 딱 표면적이었다.
개인 면담에서 리처드 교수님에게 가볍게 말했던 내용들. 거기서 크게 벗어나는 것이 없었으니까.
‘내 발표가 어찌 받아들여질지 모르겠는데.’
세 학생의 발표가 워낙 대동소이하다 보니 이런 걱정까지 들 지경이었다.
하지만 결국 내 차례는 왔다. 그렇다면 준비한 것을 드러내 보이는 게 당연했다.
‘좋아, 해 볼까.’
“AI의 가장 확실한 약점은 인간이 아니라는 겁니다. 이미 우리에겐 좋은 예시가 있죠.”
내가 가장 먼저 꺼내 든 사진. 그건 로봇이었다.
“미식축구, 야구, 축구에 농구까지. 사람들은 수많은 스포츠 스타를 보며 열광합니다. 누가 더 잘한다느니, 누가 최고의 선수인지 늘 겨루죠.”
미국은 생활 체육이 잘 퍼져 있는 나라였다. 곳곳에서 공원을 볼 수 있었으며, 대학 내 스포츠도 활발한 편이었기에.
그렇기에 아이들의 관심이 더 올라가는 것이 느껴졌다. 그중 몇몇 아이들은 아예 자세까지 고치는 게 보였다.
확실히 미술보다는 체육 쪽이 아이들에게 더 친근하다는 게 피부로 느껴졌다.
익히 알고 있는 사실임에도 좀 안타까웠다. 이전에는 일반 사람들에게 두 분야의 차이가 이렇게 크지 않았으니까.
그러나 지금은 안타까워하는 것보다는 발표가 우선이었다.
“세계 최고의 선수들은 적습니다. 손에 꼽을 정도로. 하지만 재미있는 건 이미 이 선수들을 이길 수 있는 로봇을 만드는 건 매우 쉽다는 거죠.”
다시 태어난 이 시대. 기술의 발전은 무지막지했다.
사람보다 더 빨리 달릴 수 있는 기계. 사람보다 더 공을 잘 다룰 수 있는 로봇 같은 건 손쉽게 만들어 냈으니까.
“그러나 우리는 그 기계를 보면서 열광하는 사람은 없죠. 왜일까요?”
난 자연스러운 질문을 하며 잠깐의 간격을 두었다. 아주 찰나의 침묵 후 누군가 자기도 모르게 중얼거리는 게 들렸다.
“……사람이 아니니까.”
내 귀는 그걸 놓치지 않았다. 그쪽을 향해 빙그레 미소 한번 지어 준 후 입을 열었다.
“예, 그들은 인간이 아니기에. 그렇기에 우리에게 감동을 주지 못합니다.”
야구공이 튀어나오는 기계를 보며 흥분하는 사람은 없다. 공을 차는 로봇을 보며 소리치는 이도 없었다.
‘재미있는 일이지. 인간이 같은 인간의 감정에만 강하게 자극당한다는 건.’
사람의 육체적 능력보다 뛰어난 기계가 나와도 스포츠는 건재했다. 단지 부수적인 것들이 좀 변했을 뿐이었다.
내가 볼 때는 미술도 마찬가지였다. 사진이 나왔다고 해서 미술이 사라지지 않았다. 단지 변했을 뿐.
이번 AI도 마찬가지였다. 또 다른 색다른 도구가 탄생한 것에 불과했다. 인간이 그려야만 가치 있는 것에서 AI는 절대 이를 이길 수 없었다.
“최종적으로 그림은 사람이 의도한 대로 그려야 그 뜻이 온전합니다.”
작은 점을 잘못 찍는 실수. 물감이 교묘하게 퍼지는 우연. 그 모든 것들은 인간의 손에서 하나의 작품이 될 수 있었다.
그건 사람이 표현할 수 있는 창의성이었으니까.
하지만 AI에게는 달랐다. 그들이 만들어 내는 우연은 오류에 가까웠다. 거기에 욕망하고 의미를 부여하는 사람이 많을 리가.
그 뒤에도 내 발표는 몇 분간 계속되었다. 앞의 아이들과 달리 기술적인 면보다는 근본적인 약점을 짚어 내는 데 주력하는 발표였다.
“끝으로 이걸 보여 드리고 싶군요.”
동양인, 서양인, 백인, 흑인, 황인까지. 내가 보여 준 건 각 키워드에 맞게 뽑아 온 몇 가지 그림들이었다.
“어허.”
몇몇 아이들이 내가 하려는 말을 눈치챈 듯 신음성을 흘렸다. 난 그런 반응을 눈여겨보며 마무리로 들어갔다.
“이거만 봐도 AI의 약점은 명확합니다. 이들은 인간이 만들어 낸 편견까지 그대로 내보이거든요.”
각 인종이 가진 외향적인 편견이 가득한 그림들.
예를 들면 동양인의 경우 가느다란 눈에 광대가 두드러진 모습을 보이고 있었다. 반면 서양인이라고 표현된 사람은 누가 봐도 코가 크고, 근육질의 남자였다.
그렇기에 더더욱 대비될 수밖에 없었다. 사람의 그림으로 학습한 AI는 사람의 한계를 벗어나지 못했다.
그 편견까지 고스란히 내보이고 있었으니까. 그걸 보여 주면서 발표를 마무리 지을 수 있었다.
“인간의 창의성, 그 이상을 그릴 수 없기에. AI는 인간이 아니라는 것 자체만으로도 큰 약점을 가집니다. 이상입니다.”
그 말을 끝으로 난 시계를 흘끔 바라보았다. 다행히도 시간에 딱 맞춘 것이 느껴졌다.
속으로 흐뭇해하면서도 난 표정을 관리했다. 아직 끝난 게 아니었으니까.
“질문 있습니다!”
역시나 적극적인 미국의 아이들. 곧바로 누군가 손을 번쩍 드는 것이 보였다.
같이 발표를 하기로 한 학생 중 하나. 그녀가 손을 드는 게 보였다. 눈빛이 이글거리는 게 굳은 마음을 먹은 모양이었다.
‘이럴 것 같기는 했지.’
어색한 구도와 비슷비슷한 그림들. 그리고 조금 깊게 들어가면 나오는 저작권 문제.
나를 제외한 아이들의 발표는 주로 여기에 초점이 맞춰져 있었다. 그것도 그럴 게 이 아이들은 그림을 그리는 자들이 아니었으니까.
그러면서도 위기감 가득한 상황 속에서도 희망이 있다는 식으로 끝을 맺었다. 막연하지만 가능성이 있다는 어조 말이다.
내가 아예 AI는 도구일 뿐. 인간의 상대가 될 수 없다고 한 것과는 차이가 있긴 했다.
무조건적으로 말하고 싶다는 눈빛. 그 따가운 시선을 받으며 난 그 학생을 지목했다.
“네에, 말씀해 주세요.”
“솔직히 상황을 너무 낙관적으로만 보는 거 아닌가요?”
역시나 시작부터 심상치 않았다. 너무 낙관적이라니. 말투가 톡 쏘는 느낌이었다.
“지금도 이 정도예요. 발전하고, 기술적인 보완이 더해지면…… 어느 정도까지 될지 모른다고 보는데요.”
“발전해도 마찬가지예요. 인간은 같은 사람이 만들어 낸 것에 더 감동하니까요.”
그러나 상대방은 호락호락하지 않았다.
“당신이 하는 순수 미술은 그럴 수 있죠. 근데 상업 미술은요?”
그 순간 난 알아차렸다. 저 학생은 내가 그림을 그리는 화가라는 걸 알고 있었다.
그렇기에 그 점을 더 파고드는 모양이었다. 아무래도 굳이 분류를 하자면, 난 순수 미술 쪽이긴 했으니까.
“게임이나 이런 상업 미술 쪽은 창의성보다는 무난하고 쓸 만한 그림을 그리잖아요? 그쪽 분야는 AI에서 약점을 찾을 수 없지 않나요?”
“그 무난하고 쓸 만한 그림을 택하는 것도 결국 사람입니다.”
그렇게 말하며 난 다시 앞에 보였던 그림들을 띄웠다. 다양한 사람들이 주제에 따라 그려진 그림들을.
“이 그림들이 그냥 이렇게 나왔을까요?”
그럴 리가 없다는 건 여기 있는 모두가 알았다. 리처드 교수님의 말에 따라 다들 AI 조금씩은 만져 봤을 테니까.
“아니요. 이건 다른 그림들을 다 버리고 제가 선택했죠.”
계속 나온 그림 중에서도 내가 고른 것. 그 결과물이 이 자리에 있는 것이었다.
“그럼에도 제 머리에 딱 담긴 그림을 뽑을 수 없었습니다.”
“그건 그냥 그만큼 돌려 보지 않아서…….”
누군가 작은 목소리로 중얼거리는 게 들렸다. 이를 들은 난 속으로 한숨을 내쉬었다.
‘역시 준비한 거는 어떻게든 다 써먹긴 하는구나.’
학생들의 질문은 꽤 치열했다. 일개 교양 강의라고 하기엔 다들 열정이 넘쳤으니까.
그렇기에 난 다른 화면을 띄울 수밖에 없었다. 발표가 길어질까 봐 말하지 않았다.
하지만 질문 시간에는 이야기가 나올 것 같았다. 일명 상업 예술이라고 불리는 분야. 그를 조금이라도 알고 있는 사람이라면 이 이야기를 안 할 리가 없었으니까.
“사실 발표 시간이 길어질 것 같아 안 보여 드린 게 하나 있죠.”
남들 앞에서 하는 발표이기에. 더군다나 시간이 정해져 있었기에 핵심 중에서도 알맹이만 골라서 말했다.
하지만 결국 무제한에 가까운 질문 시간은 내가 과하게 준비해 둔 것까지 꺼내 들게 만들었으니.

내가 띄운 건 내 이름이었다. 한글과 영어가 모두 적힌 화면을 학생들이 바라보는 게 느껴졌다.
“지금 나온 AI는 말이죠. 그럴듯하게……. 입력한 단어에 얼추 맞게 뽑을 수는 있습니다. 하지만 정확하게 제 머리에 든 그림을 결국 전 뽑지 못했습니다.”
단어를 입력해서 나온 그림들은 수없이 많았다. 하지만 단 하나도 마음에 드는 것이 없었다.
그야 당연했다. 그건 내가 그린 내 자화상이 아니었으니까.
“제가 그리고 싶은 건 이거였거든요.”
그리고 화면에는 최근 내가 작업한 그림이 올라갔다.
많은 화가가 본인 초상화 한 번씩은 그린다. 자기만큼 스스로를 잘 아는 사람이 없었으니까.
작가가 표현하기에 가장 좋은 인간. 그게 바로 자신이었기에.
또한 솔직히 한 번쯤 본인 얼굴을 그림으로 그려 보고 싶기도 했고.
‘어디 내어놓기는 뭐하지만, 이렇게 보여 주는 건 가능하지.’
이건 내 스스로를 그린 그림이었다. 남을 그리는 것이라면 몰라도 자신을 그린 것이었기에 어디 내놓기 민망했다.
이게 공식적인 자리에 떡하니 전시되어 있으면 어떤 기분일지 분명했다.
내가 예전에 그린 미인도가 국립중앙박물관에 박혀 있을 때 든 기분이리라.
‘그걸 다시 겪을 수는 없지만…….’
하지만 이왕 그린 자화상. 혹시나 하는 마음에 고이 자료집에 담아 두긴 했다.
지금은 도저히 세상에 꺼내 보이지 못해도 언젠가는 나올 수도 있는 것 아니겠는가. 그리고 내 쓸데없는 준비성은 이 자리에서 빛을 발할 모양이었으니.
“미친…….”
“쟤 지금 AI에서 안 나온다고 본인이 그림 그려 온 거야?”
“와우.”
“세상엔 진짜 별의별 사람이 다 있다더니…….”
역시나 내 그림을 보여 주는 게 제일 빠른 방법이었던 모양이었다. 한바탕 잠시의 소란이 끝난 후 아이들은 기가 막하다는 얼굴로 화면을 바라보았다.
물론 그 중 몇몇은 내 얼굴을 뚫어져라 쳐다보기도 했다.
“…….”
“더 질문 없으세요?”
내 물음에도 학생들의 반응은 바뀌지 않았다. 발표 직후 손을 휙휙 들던 아이들의 반응과는 거리가 있었다. 역시 준비한 건 다 요긴하게 쓸데가 있었다.
“그럼 이상으로 발표를 마치도록 하겠습니다. 들어 주셔서 감사드립니다.”
그렇기에 난 그걸 끝으로 발표를 무사히 마칠 수 있었다. 당연히 끝인사는 공손하게 두 손 모아 아이들에게 고개를 숙였다.
동방예의지국의 사람으로서 인사는 중요한 마무리였기에.

어디까지 하는지 지켜보고 싶었던 그 마음. 그건 미묘하게 다른 형태로 발현되었다.
“쟤가 마지막이라 다행이네.”
“뭐?”
“솔직히 저런 게 첫 번째나 중간이었어 봐. 다른 애들 더 비교당했을걸.”
현실이 그러했다. 도입 부분부터 결론까지 그야말로 깔끔 그 자체였다. 저런 발표가 다른 애들 기를 죽이는 것이었다.
“난…… 어째 특강 하나 들은 기분인데?”
친구의 말을 들은 칭구이. 속으로 격하게 동의했다. 짧지만 핵심적인 내용을 들은 기분이었기에.
그리고 동시에 드는 다른 생각이 있었다.
‘이 과제 하나를 위해서 그렇게 그림까지 그리다니.’
이 수업은 교양 중 하나였다. 전공도 아닌. 심지어 이들이 한 발표는 기말고사도 아닌 중간 대체용 발표였다.
그렇기에 다른 학생들도 상대적으로 딱 그 정도 수준에 맞춰서 발표를 했다. 윤성 신이라고 했던가. 그 아이는 달랐다.
혼자만 그야말로 전심전력을 다하여 한 강의. 딱 그 느낌이었다. 발표의 질과 질문에 대한 대응력. 그 두 가지가 모두 차원이 달랐으니까.
‘대체 여기에 얼마나 준비를 한 거야. 아니, 그것보다 미술이 그렇게 좋은가?’
그림을 정말로 좋아해야만. 미술을 정말로 아껴야만 저게 가능했을 것이다. 발표 내용에도 들어가지 않는 걸 저렇게 자료집이랍시고 넣어 온 걸 보면 말이다.
그 때문일까. 칭구이는 자기도 모르게 입을 열고야 말았다.
