128화 어떤 화가의 그림을 보고 한 경험
에일대에서 준 작업실은 그다지 큰 공간은 아니었다. 그림 그리는 도구 좀 놓고, 책상과 노트북 좀 두면 여유 공간이 많지 않았으니까.
그러나 종종 머리에 당분을 보충해 줘야 하는 내 특성상 기본적인 마실 건 구비해 둔 상태였다. 단번에 당분을 섭취하기에 음료만 한 게 없었다. 수분과 당분. 이 둘은 모두 중요했으니까.
날 위해 준비한 음료들. 이건 지금 그야말로 요긴하게 쓰였다. 뜻밖의 손님이 찾아와도 당황하지 않고 대접할 수 있었기에.
“이건 뭔가?”
“꿀배차요. 그나마 이게 덜 단 차라서요.”
신입생 환영회에서 다이애나가 한 말을 기억하고 있었다. 정확한 병명은 몰라도 그녀의 할아버지가 아프다는 것 정도는 내 머리에 있었으니.
아무래도 건강에 나쁜 음료를 꺼내 놓기 뭐했다. 자연히 내 선택은 그나마 건강식이라고 할 수 있는 꿀배차였다.
“흐음, 마셔 본 적이 없지만……. 잘 마시겠네.”
그 말을 들으며 난 먼저 한 모금 마셨다. 따뜻하고 향긋한 향이 올라오는 게 딱 알맞은 느낌이었다.

다행히 차는 잘 우러난 것 같았다. 좀 덜 달아서 내 입맛에는 미묘한 맛이었지만. 이 정도면 손님 접대로는 괜찮으리라.
“좀 달긴 하지만, 맛이 괜찮군. 나중에 이게 뭔지 자세히 좀 말해 주겠나?”
“예. 그거야 어렵지 않으니까요.”
그 뒤로는 잠시 차를 즐기는 시간이 이어졌다. 물론 그건 아주 찰나였다. 챈들러라고 스스로를 소개한 그는 고풍스러운 자세로 찻잔을 내려놓았다.
“아, 맞다. 차가 맛있다 보니, 정작 본론을 까먹었군.”
“본론이요?”
“이미 애나에겐 들었지 않나.”
난 애나라는 사람에게 뭘 들은 기억이 없었다. 하지만 챈들러 윌슨에게 저렇게 불릴 수 있는 사람을 한 명 알고 있긴 했으니.
“애나면 다이애나군요.”
“그래, 내 손녀딸. 그 아이가 내 초상화에 대해 말했었지?”
날카로운 눈초리로 날 관찰하는 게 느껴졌다. 내가 무슨 표정을 짓고 있는지 살펴보는 얼굴이었기에.
“크흠. 이거 늙으면 성격만 급해진다네. 그러다 보니, 이렇게 다짜고짜 물어보게 되지.”
내 눈빛을 읽은 듯 그는 헛기침을 했다. 그러더니 천천히 이렇게 찾아온 이유에 대한 설명을 시작했다.
“학기가 끝난 뒤에 날 보러 오겠다고 하는 말은 들었네.”
“그랬었죠.”
“그건 아마 자네가 바빠서였을 테지?”
그랬다. 이러니저러니 해도 지금 내 가장 우선순위는 아트 페어였다. 홍콩에서 열리는 이번 아트 바젤은 어지간한 대형 전시회보다 많은 공을 들여야 했기에.
“자네가 바쁘다는 건 충분히 이해하네. 그래서 이렇게 내가 직접 왔지. 난 이제 은퇴해서 한가하거든.”
씨익 미소를 짓는 그. 백발이 보이는 노인이긴 했지만 눈빛만은 여전히 형형했다.
난 잠시 말을 골랐다. 미소 짓는 노인 앞에서 어디서부터 어디까지 말을 해도 좋을지 판단해야 했으니까.
하지만 이번에도 나보단 상대가 빨랐다. 대기업을 이끌던 가락이 어디 가지 않는 것일까.
그는 내가 무슨 말을 못하고 있는지 대번에 알아차린 기색이었다.
“음…… 이걸 어찌 말해야 할지 모르겠는데. 내 뇌에는 시한폭탄이 하나 있다네.”
갑자기 터져 나온 건강에 대한 고백. 그게 분위기가 굳는 것이 느껴졌다.
나뿐만 아니라 뒤에서 묵묵히 서 있던 중년의 그까지 어깨가 움찔하는 게 보였으니까.
“……시한폭탄이라뇨.”
“작은 종양인데, 계속 추적 관찰 중이거든. 안 커지고 별다른 문제가 없으면 뭐, 지금처럼 잘 먹고 잘살 걸세.”
아무렇지도 않게 하는 그 말. 언뜻 들으면 괜찮은 그것은 바꿔 말해, 문제가 생기면 잘살 수 없다는 소리였다.
“그럼 문제가 생기면…….”
“문제가 생기면 언제 쓰러져 병원에 실려 나갈지 나도 모르지.”
본인의 생명에 대해 말하는 것임에도 그는 퍽 덤덤했다.
하지만 난 그 안에 깃든 감정을 어렴풋이 느낄 수 있었다. 나 또한 그러했으니까.
‘죽음이 앞에 다가오면, 뭐라도 남기고 싶어지지.’
전생에서 몸의 건강이 급격히 나빠졌다는 것을 깨달았을 때의 나 또한 그랬다.
죽어 간다는 걸 제일 먼저 알아차린 건 다름 아닌 나 스스로였다.
그랬기에 밥을 먹는 것보다도 그림을 먼저 그렸다. 밖을 나가는 대신 한 번이라도 더 붓질을 하기 위해 노력했다.
내 눈앞의 상대방 또한 비슷하리라. 그렇지 않았다면, 그가 이 에일대까지 날 찾아서 왔을 리가 없었으니까.
아니나 다를까, 그는 내게 이곳에 찾아온 이유를 밝혔다.
“학기가 끝나고 온다고 했었지? 헌데, 시한폭탄이 언제 터질지 나도 모르다 보니. 이렇게 오게 됐지.”
“언제 터질지 모른다는 거면…… 그때까지 괜찮으실 가능성이 큰 거 아니세요?”
“물론 그렇겠지. 근데 안 괜찮을 수도 있지 않겠나.”
그가 에일대까지 직접 서둘러 온 이유. 그건 본인의 건강 상태를 확신하지 못하기 때문이었다.
‘죽음을 앞에 두면, 아무래도 더 조급해지는 법이지.’
조금이라도 괜찮을 때. 약간이라도 멀쩡할 때 일을 끝내고 싶다는 그 마음. 알 것 같았다.
‘인간에게 가장 두려운 것 중 하나니까.’
눈앞의 노인은 분명 단단한 사람이었다. 풍기는 기운부터가 그가 보통 사람이 아니란 걸 알려 주고 있었으니까.
그러나 그런 그도 죽음 앞에서 초조해지는 보통 사람이리라. 그렇기에 난 한숨을 쉬며 입을 열었다.
“초상화를 굳이 그리고 싶어 하시는 이유가 뭐예요? 요즘 카메라들 진짜 좋잖아요.”
과거 많은 이들이 초상화를 그렸던 이유. 그건 카메라가 없었기 때문이었다.
죽음으로 사라지기 전, 그 존재를 증명하고, 남기기에 초상화만 한 게 없었으니까.
하지만 이 시대는 달랐다. 가깝게는 스마트폰부터 시작해 멀게는 전문적인 촬영 장비까지.
얼마든지 원하는 대로 꾸민 후 사진을 찍을 수 있었다. 그것도 고화질로.
‘다이애나는 막연히 화가를 동경하시는 것 같다고 했지만……. 정말 그 이유일까.’
단순한 동경만 가지고 이렇게 멀리 날 찾아왔을 리가 없었다. 본인 말대로 몸도 좋지 않은 사람이 말이다.
“윤성 신 화가 선생.”
“그건 좀 호칭이 긴 것 같은데요.”
“그럼 화가 선생라고 부르지. 화가 선생은 반 고흐의 자화상이나, 프란츠 빈터할터의 초상화들을 본 적이 있나?”
반 고흐의 자화상이야 뭐 워낙에 유명했다. 미술에 대해 잘 모르는 사람들도 귀가 잘린 그 자화상을 한 번쯤은 사진으로 봤을 정도였으니까.
하지만 그다음에 나온 사람은 확실히 흥미로웠다. 프란츠 빈터할트라니. 그는 그다지 유명한 인물이 아니었으니까.
‘초상화를 많이 그린 화가를 잘 알고 계시네.’
프란츠 크사버 빈터할터. 1800년대 독일의 화가 겸 판화가로 초상화를 많이 그려 명성을 쌓은 인물이었다.
각 왕족의 초상화를 그리던 그는 파리를 기반으로 루이 필립의 궁정 화가가 된다. 조선으로 따지면 어진을 그린 화가였으니.
그만큼 초상화 하나로는 일가견이 있었다고 해도 좋으리라. 대신 그는 미술사에선 그다지 인정받는 편은 아니었다. 이유는 여러 가지로 손꼽혔다.
누구는 그에게 너무 돈을 좇는 화가였다고 말한다. 명성을 얻기 위한 기발하거나, 특별한 그림을 그리지 않았으니까. 단지 초상화를 정말 과하게 예쁘게 그려 돈을 많이 버는 화가였다면서 말이다.
“둘 다 본 적이 있어요. 특히나 프란츠의 초상화는 꽤 많이요.”
자화상과 초상화. 둘다 대상은 다르지만 인물을 그린 그림이라는 공통점이 있었다.
특히나 프란츠. 초상화를 전문적으로 그린 화기이기 때문일까. 그의 그림은 주로 인물화에 집중되어 있었다.
한때 유화에 대해 공부할 때 그의 작품을 많이 살펴보기도 했다. 나 또한 인물화를 그리는 걸 즐겨 했으니. 자연히 관심이 간 것이었다.
“그들이 가진 초상화의 특징이 뭔지 혹시 생각해 봤나?”
“글쎄요. 꽤 있을 것 같은데요.”
당장에 떠오르는 특징은 몇 가지가 있었다. 유화의 사용 기법부터 시작해 몇 가지 기술들까지.
그러나 어쩐지 그가 말하려고 하는 건 이 부분이 아닌 듯 보였다.
“흐흐. 역시나 화가 선생의 눈은 나와 다른 모양이구만. 헌데, 내 눈에는 딱 하나만 보여. 바로 거짓이란 거지.”
“거짓이요?”
“그 초상화는 다들 실제 그들의 모습과는 다르다네.”
초상화는 원래 그게 일반적이었다. 늘 거짓이 따르기 마련이었으니.
애초부터 사람들은 지나치게 사실적인 초상화를 원하지 않았다. 그건 보는 이들도 그려지는 이들도 만족하기 어려웠기에.
‘조선에서도 흔한 일이었지.’
이 시대의 사람들은 말한다.
조선에서 그려진 초상화들은 세밀하고 진실되다고. 백발이나 주름도 잘 표현했으며, 인상도 솔직하게 그렸다고 말이다.
하지만 그건 서양의 다른 초상화들에 비해 상대적으로 그럴 뿐. 그 초상화에 거짓이 없는 건 아니었다.
‘애초부터 화가가 그리는데 그게 가능할 리가.’
그림을 그리는 것 또한 화가였다. 사람이 붓질을 하는 데 온전하게 진실만 담길 수가 없었다. 화가의 시선으로 보는 그 사람이 담기는 것이기에.
“한쪽은 그 내면을 좀 많이 드러내 보였고, 다른 쪽은 유난히 대상을 아름답게 그렸다는 특징을 가졌지만, 그 둘 모두 일부 거짓을 품고 있지.”
“그렇긴 하죠.”
“하지만 그렇기에 둘 모두 사람들에게 확고한 이미지를 심어 주었지.”
맞는 말이었다. 본인의 귀를 자른 반 고흐의 자화상도, 프란츠가 그린 미모로 이름을 알려진 오스트리아의 왕비인 엘리자베스도.
실제 그들의 모습과는 차이가 있었을 것이다.
사실 이미 후자는 그게 명확하게 공개되었다. 엘리자베스의 사진이 세상에 나왔으니까.
미인이긴 했지만, 초상화와는 느낌이 좀 달랐다. 그럼에도 사람들은 그녀를 초상화 속의 미인으로 기억한다.
그 이미지가 너무나도 확고하기에.
반 고그의 자화상도, 프란츠 빈터할의 초상화도 마찬가지였다. 그들의 작품은 그 어떤 현실적인 사진보다 확실하게 대중의 기억 속에 남았다.
그것이 초상화였기에 가능한 일이었으니.
“내가 원하는 초상화는 그거라네. 확고하게 날 이미지화해서 남기는 것.”
그는 드디어 제 속내를 드러내었다. 본인이 죽기 전 초상화를 남기고 싶은 그 이유를 말이다.
“이래 보여도 난 꽤 열심히 살았다네. 그걸 남들이 확실하게 기억해 줬으면 좋겠거든.”
“초상화를 원하시는 이유는 알겠습니다.”
확실한 본인의 이미지화. 그걸 위해 초상화를, 그림인 작품을 원한다는 건 알겠다. 그러나 진짜 든 의문은 따로 있었으니.
“근데 그게 왜 접니까? 이미 다른 프로 화가들 많은데요.”
다이애나의 말을 듣고 간단히 조사를 해 본 적이 있었다.
윌슨가. 그들은 세계에서도 손에 꼽히는 부유한 가문이었다. 미국의 유통 부자였으니까.
그런 회사의 전대 회장이라면, 그는 어지간한 화가는 원하는 대로 초정 가능했으리라.
아직 상대적으로 어리고 명성이 애매한 내가 아닌, 이미 세계 최고라고 불리는 화가들을.
본인을 챈들러 윌슨이라고 소개한 그. 그는 내 눈을 빤히 바라보더니 금세 싱긋 미소를 지었다.
“세상에는 초상화를 그릴 수 있는 화가는 많지. 하물며 이제는 사진을 초상화 느낌으로 바꿔 주는 프로그램까지 나왔다고 하지 않나?”
최근 그런 프로그램이 나왔다고 들었다. 과연 기술의 발전은 어마무시했다. 간단한 사진만 넣어 줘도 그걸 그림화시켜 버리는 프로그램이라니.
“그런데 그렇게 만든 그림들은 이상할 정도로 힘이 약하다네.”
“힘이요?”
“우리 화가 선생은 경험해 본 적이 없나? 이상하게 눈에 띄는 작품을 보거나 한 경험 말일세.”
있었다. 종종 전시회에서 잘 겪을 수 있는 일이었다.
“예전에 너무 대충 그린 그림인데 가까이 가서 보니 피카소의 것이었다든가. 그런 경험……. 난 꽤 자주 했다네.”
그는 아련하게 무언가를 떠올리는 표정을 지었다.
“최근에도 종종 그런 경험을 할 수 있었지. 은퇴하고 나서는 전시회 보는 게 내 작은 낙이어서 말일세.”
다이애나가 미술을 좋아하는 할아버지라 표현할 만큼 그는 확실히 전시회를 좋아하는 듯 보였다.
생각하는 것만으로도 기분이 좋아지신 듯 입가에 미소를 떼지 않았으니까.
“물론 대부분 그 그림의 주인들은 이미 죽은 화가였었지. 피카소도, 반 고흐도. 모두 이미 이 세상 사람이 아니었으니까.”
세계적으로 대단하다고 칭해지는 화가들. 물론 당연히 이미 돌아가신 지 한참인 화가들이었다.
“그런데 내가 최근 똑같은 경험을 했거든. 어떤 화가의 그림을 보고.”
어떤 화가. 여기서 눈치 없는 사람이 아닌 이상 그게 누구인지 모를 사람은 아무도 없으리라.
