13화 왜 그 많은 작품들 중 하필
심지어 그 옆에는 짜증이 날 정도로 친절하게 해석본까지 붙어 있었다. 수염이 있었다면 쥐어뜯고 싶어질 지경이었다.
‘아니, 그 많은 그림들 중에 왜 하필 이거지?’
한평생 그린 그림이 몇 개인가. 셀 수도 없었다. 그만큼 많았으니까.
심지어 난 죽기 직전까지도 그림을 그렸다. 그만큼 내 작품은 충분히 많다는 뜻이었다.
그런데 이런 큰 곳에 남겨진 그림이 이거라니. 이 많은 후손들에게 보여지는 작품이 이것이라니!
내가 현실을 부정하는 사이. 작품 앞에는 점점 더 많은 이들이 몰려들고 있었다.
“와. 이게 그 유명한 미인도구나.”
“나 오늘 여기 이거 보러 왔잖아.”
“오. 너도? 나도!”
그들은 하나같이 내 그림을 보며 감탄하는 중이었다. 몇몇은 아예 코를 박고 내 그림에 대한 설명을 읽었다.
“교과서에서만 보던 걸 이렇게 보니, 진짜 느낌이 완전 다르네.”
“그러게. 와, 여기 선 엄청 가늘어.”
“역시 그림은 직접 봐야 한다니깐.”
옆에서 다른 이들이 그림을 보며 연신 칭찬 중이었다. 호평에 호평을 거듭하는 소리들.
하지만 무려 수백 년 뒤에 내 그림을 본 소감은 저들과 달랐다.
‘진짜 아깝다.’
이 그림은 물론 내 자랑스러운 그림이었다. 난 실패한 그림을 남겨 두진 않았으니까.
다만 아까운 동시에 안타깝긴 했다. 더 잘 그림 그림이, 더 자랑스러워할 만한 작품들이. 내겐 많이 있었다.
그런데 길고 긴 세월 때문일까. 그 모든 것이 없어진 채 남아 있는 작품이 이것이라니.
얼마간 탄식하던 난 마음을 고쳐먹기로 했다.
‘하긴 이거라도 남아 있는 게 다행인 건가.’
국립중앙박물관이라고 불리는 이곳. 여기엔 많은 작품이 잘 보존되어 있었다.
그러나 동시에 내가 기억하는 대다수 사람의 그림은 존재하지 않았다.
당시에 꽤 유명했던 사람들도, 내가 그림을 공부할 때 보아 왔던 작품들도. 모두 이 자리에 있는 건 아니었기에.
그만큼 세월의 힘은 무시무시했다. 그 많은 작품을 흔적도 없이 사라지게 만들었으니까.
거대한 시간의 힘을 느끼며 난 내 그림에 대한 설명을 살펴보았다. 이 시대의 사람들은 대체 뭐라고 했으려나?
거기엔 그림에 대한 세밀한 분석이 적혀 있었다. 덕분에 난 후대의 사람들이 그림에 대해 어떤 평가를 하는지 짐작할 수 있었다.
‘이걸 미인도라고 이름을 붙였구나.’
내가 정하지 않은 내 그림의 이름. 그걸 나의 후손들이 붙여 주었다.
‘과거엔 이름조차 정하기 뭣했는데.’
이 그림은 그런 작품이었다.
고고한 자연을 그린 산수화도, 선비의 정신을 표현한 사군자도 아니었다.
내가 그렸던 것은 한 여인.
시대에 맞지 않는 그림이었다. 그 당시엔 여성에 대한 그림을 그린 것조차 민망해하던 시절이었기에.
그 때문일까. 난 차마 이름조차 짓지 못했다.
그런데 세월이 흘렀다고 이토록 후하게 평가해 주다니.
‘여기에 다른 작품들과 함께 있는 것만으로도 영광이긴 하지.’
이렇게 긍정적으로 생각하기로 마음먹었다. 그때부터 몹시 흐뭇해졌다.
‘흐흐. 내가 겸재 선생과 같이 거론될 줄 아무도 몰랐을 것이야.’
비실비실 새어 나오는 웃음들. 그걸 간신히 참는 와중이었다.
그 순간 내 귀에 웬 헛소리가 들려왔다. 지금까지 들었던 말 중 가장 믿을 수 없는 문장들이었다.
“대단하지? 조선 시대 최고의 화가 중 한 명인 신윤복의 대표작이야.”
부모님은 미인도를 보며 흐뭇하게 웃으셨다.
하지만 미소와 달리 두 분의 입에서 나온 소리는 심상치 않았다.
“네? 지금 뭐라 말씀하셨죠?”
조선 시대 최고의 화가라니? 왜 그런 엄청난 수식어가 자기 이름의 앞에 들어간다는 말인가.
과거의 난 명성을 얻기는커녕 혼인도 하지 못했다. 당연히 자식도 없었다.
출세의 상징이라는 도화서. 그곳에서는 나와야 했으며, 죽기 전에는 동생을 통해 물감을 얻어 쓰던 나였다.
고고한 화가도, 명예로운 작가도 아니었다.
그랬던 내가 지금은 뭐라고 불린다고? 무려 조선의 천재 화가?
세상이 미친 건지 내가 이상한 건지 구분되지 않았다.
지금 내가 미래에 환생을 한 게 아니라, 아예 다른 꿈을 꾸고 있는 건가 싶을 지경이었으니.
‘후우.’
속으로 심호흡을 한 나는 다시 주변을 살폈다.
역시 꿈은 아닌 것 같았다. 그렇기에 난 조심스럽게 질문을 던졌다.
“……신윤복이 그렇게 유명해요?”
이전 생의 내 이름을 말하는 목소리가 껄끄러웠다. 설마하니 이 질문을 현생의 부모님에게 할 줄은 몰랐으니까.

긴장한 내 물음에 어머니는 날 바라보셨다. 그러더니 손으로 눈앞에 있는 그림을 가리키셨다.
“윤성이도 이 그림 보이지?”
“……네.”
“이 미인도는 우리나라 보물 중 하나야.”
“보물이요…….”
국보와 보물.
그것에 대해 이미 설명을 들은 나였다. 그렇기에 보물로 지정이 되었다는 소리가 어떤 의미인지 알 수 있었다.
“응. 여인의 자태를 묘사한 선이 부드럽고 섬세하지.”
그러려고 노력한 부분. 그 점을 정확하게 짚어 내는 어머니셨다.
“거기다 부분적으로 칠해진 채색은 그 아름다움을 더하고 있어.”
“…….”
“여인의 얼굴에서 느껴지는 오묘한 기운 때문에 조선의 모나리자라고도 불릴 정도야.”
모나리자가 어떤 그림인지 몰랐다. 그러나 난 추측할 수 있었다.
그것이 어떤 가치를 지니고 있는지, 어느 정도의 귀한 것인지 말이다.
“봐 봐. 이 미인도 앞에 제일 사람이 많지?”
정말 사람들이 유난히 이곳에 몰려 있었다. 다들 옆에 함께 온 이들에게 미인도에 대해 말하고 있었다.
“여기 온 대다수의 사람은 이 그림을 보러 왔다고 해도 과언이 아닐걸?”
내 떨떠름한 감상에 쐐기를 박는 이야기. 그 말이 어머니의 입을 통해 나왔다.
“그러니 당연히 신윤복은 대단한 화가지. 무려 이 미인도를 그린 화가인데.”
“…….”
“심지어 신윤복이 그린 혜원전신첩이란 작품은 무려 국보로 지정되어 있어.”
어이구, 한술 더 뜨고 있었다. 이제는 보물도 모자라 국보란다.
덕분에 난 점점 더 할 말을 잃었다. 귀가 뜨거워지고 있었기에.
“그…….”
내가 할 말을 잃고 침묵하는 사이. 어머니와 아버지가 내 얼굴을 쳐다보았다.
“우리 윤성이 왜 그래? 어디 아파?”
“그러게. 애가 왜 이렇게 갑자기 얼굴이 빨개지지?”
걱정스러운 어조의 말들을 들으며 난 솔직한 감상을 내뱉었다. 뭐라도 말하고 싶었기에.
“참…… 그림이란 게 오묘하네요.”
“뭐?”
“본인이 좋아서 그린 그림이 이렇게 고평가를 받을 수 있다니.”
난 김흥도와 달랐다. 양반도 아니었으며, 궁에 남지도 못했다. 당연히 사서에 이름을 남기지 못할 것이라 여겼다.
신윤복은 원하는 그림을 그리는 화가였으니까. 그랬기에 내 그림은 저속하다고도 불리었다.
후대도 내 작품을 보며 그리 평가할 것이라 여겼다.
하지만 이런 내 예상은 빗나갔다. 무려 보물과 국보로 지정되어 있다니.
내 미묘한 감상을 들은 어머니가 잔잔히 설명해 주셨다.
“천재 예술가의 인생은 그런 경우가 많지.”
“그런가요?”
“서양화가 쪽에서도 생전에 저평가를 받던 화가가 죽고 나서 고평가를 받는 경우가 많거든.”
“어디든 비슷한가 보네요.”
내가 천재라고 생각한 적은 없었다. 난 그냥 그림을 멋대로 그리는 걸 좋아하는 사람일 뿐.
그렇지만 이런 말을 듣게 되자 슬슬 궁금증이 생기는 것도 사실이었다.
“어머니.”
“그…… 윤성아. 엄마라고 부르는 것보다 어머니가 편하니?”
갑자기 이상한 말씀을 하시는 어머니였다. 어머니를 어머니라고 하지 않으면 뭐라고 한단 말인가.
“……?”
내가 지그시 바라보자 어머니는 한숨을 내쉬었다. 무언가를 포기하신 기색이 역력하셨다.
“후…… 아니야. 그래. 원하는 대로 해야지. 아, 나에게 하고 싶은 말이 있니?”
“저 다음에는 서양 그림들을 보고 싶어요.”
“서양 그림들?”
잠시 의아한 듯 눈을 깜빡이던 어머니. 그녀는 고개를 갸웃하며 질문을 던졌다.
“금방 이야기한 것처럼 할아버지의 화풍이 나오는 과정이 궁금해서 그러니?”
“그것도 있지만…….”
물론 화풍의 변화 과정은 흥미로웠다. 이렇게 객관적으로 그림의 변천사를 바라보는 과정 자체가 즐거웠기에.
그러나 다른 쪽 호기심이 점점 더 강해졌다.
지극히 원해서 그린 내 그림도. 왕족의 명을 받고 그린 다른 화가의 그림도. 모두 새롭게 발전한 이 나라의 보물이었다.
그렇다면 다른 나라의 그림은 어떻지? 그 나라의 화가는 어떤 그림을 그렸을까? 그들 또한 나와 같았나. 아니면 달랐나.
이런저런 의문점과 호기심이 피어올랐다. 그랬기에 자연스럽게 든 생각이었다.
난 이 모든 것을 말하는 대신 간단하게 의견을 전했다.
“전 지금의 내가 모르는, 그러니까, 다른 화가의 작품이 궁금해졌어요.”
조선에서 태어나 청과 왜의 작품을 주로 본 나다. 인접한 두 나라의 기풍도 그리 달랐는데. 하물며 서양이라니.
‘모르긴 몰라도 내 생각보다 더 많이 다를 수도 있어.’
어머니는 가만히 내 눈을 바라보셨다. 그러더니 머리를 쓰다듬으며 미소를 지으셨다.
날 쓰다듬는 손길이 상냥했기에. 나 또한 기분이 좋아졌다.
“그래. 윤성이가 원한다고 하니, 우리 앞으론 이렇게 나들이 많이 다니자.”
어머니의 대답에 활짝 웃었다. 늘 생각하지만 난 가족 복은 확실히 있었다.
출세도 명성도 얻을 수 없었던 나. 그런 내가 전생과 이번 생, 모두 좋은 부모님을 만났으니까.

가영과 주혁은 윤성이와 함께 찬찬히 전시를 돌았다.
그런 그들의 눈에 윤성이와 비슷한 어린아이들이 모여 있는 곳이 보였다.
“여긴 애들이 많네.”
“그러게. 윤성이 또래가 꽤 되는걸?”
종이와 색연필, 그리고 각종 사인펜들이 놓여 있는 곳. 두 사람은 윤성이와 함께 그 앞에서 걸음을 멈췄다.
“요즘 전시관은 다 이런가? 내가 아는 것과 좀 다른데?”
“우리 때랑은 아무래도 다르지.”
주혁의 말에 가영은 주변을 둘러보았다. 국립중앙박물관이기 때문일까. 그들이 아는 일반적인 전시관들보다 활기가 넘쳤다.
“그런가?”
“아무래도 가족 단위가 많으니까.”
두 사람이 본 건 아이들이 그림을 그릴 수 있도록 준비된 것들이었다. 주변을 둘러보니 곳곳에 주의 사항이 붙어 있었다.
[종이는 1인당 1장씩이며, 사용하신 물건은 제자리에 놓아 주세요.]그 주의 사항 아래에는 종이가 쌓여 있었다. 그걸 본 주혁은 저게 왜 있는지 짐작할 수 있었다.
“오. 이거 봐 봐. 그릴 수 있나 봐.”
“그런가 보네.”
“잘됐네. 윤성이도 그림 그리는 것 좋아하는데.”
손뼉을 친 주혁은 곧바로 근처에 있는 직원을 찾았다.
“이거 아무나 할 수 있는 겁니까?”
짐작은 짐작일 뿐. 확실하기 하기 위해 주혁은 그 옆의 사람에게 물었다. 직원은 옆에 있는 윤성이를 바라보았다.
깔끔한 유니폼을 입은 직원. 그녀는 미소를 지으며 답을 해 주었다.
“그럼요. 다만 주의 사항만 잘 지켜 주시면 됩니다.”
“따로 다른 주의 사항이 있나요?”
가영으로서는 의례적으로 한 질문이었다. 그러나 직원은 기다렸다는 듯 입을 열었다.
“아이가 종이에만 그릴 수 있도록 도와주시면 됩니다.”
“아, 하긴. 다른데도 낙서하려는 아이들이 있겠군요.”
그녀의 아들이 특이할 뿐. 일반적인 애들은 온갖 군데 낙서하기를 좋아했다. 그걸 뒷수습하는 게 보호자들의 일이었다.
잘못 크레파스 같은 것을 쥐여 주었다간 종이가 아닌 다른 곳까지 엉망이 되기에 십상이었으니.
속으로 고개를 끄덕인 가영. 그녀는 아들을 바라보았다. 아이는 누가 봐도 눈앞의 모습에 관심이 많아 보였다.
‘그렇게 좋은가.’
여기 오기 전까지도 그림을 그리던 아들이었다. 새로 생긴 붓으로 실컷 그림을 그렸음에도 여전히 부족한 모양이었다.
그녀는 자신의 손을 놓은 채 당장이라도 달려갈 것 같은 아들. 윤성이에게 말을 걸었다.
“우리 윤성이도 이거 해 볼래?”
“네에!”
아니나 다를까. 대답이 참으로 빨랐다. 색연필과 사인펜에서 눈을 떼지 못하는 아이. 그런 아이에게 그녀는 손을 내밀었다.
