133화 홍콩은 확실히 오시겠네
그 이후로도 처음 한두 번을 제외하고는 주로 챈들러 할아버지 댁에서 만났다. 그러나 오늘만은 달랐다.
내가 할아버지를 작업실로 불렀으니까. 초상화에 대한 진지한 이야기를 꺼내기엔 작업실만 한 곳이 없었다.
“역시나 학기 중에는 좀 무리였어요.”
학기가 거의 마무리가 되어 가고 있었다. 에일대에 입학한 게 가을이었는데, 어느덧 겨울이 되었으니까.
“아무래도 한국에 돌아가서 추가적인 작업을 해야 마무리가 지어질 것 같아요.”
“나야 상관없네만. 그럼 좀 늦어지는 것 아닌가?”
챈들러 할아버지께서는 덤덤한 표정으로 입을 여셨다.
“내 초상화를 아트 바젤 홍콩에 낸다고 들었던 것 같은데.”
“예. 그래서 한국에 돌아가서는 좀 더 속도를 내서 작업할 예정입니다.”
아무리 1학년 첫 학기라고는 하지만, 여러모로 바쁘긴 했다. 남들 노는 것처럼 다 놀면서 내 할 일도 하려고 하니, 오죽 바빴겠는가.
‘아트 바젤 홍콩이 3월에 열리니까. 아직 시간은 있지.’
학기가 끝나고 겨울 방학이 시작하는 시기. 나에겐 작업을 하기 가장 좋은 적기였다.
그렇기에 난 이미 계획을 찬찬히 세워 두고 있었다.
“혹시 나도 한국에 갈까?”
“……예?”
순간적으로 난 귀를 의심했다. 지금 챈들러 할아버지가 뭘 말하는 것인가.
“한국에요? 갑자기요?”
“아무래도 내가 있는 게 그림에 도움이 되지 않겠는가 해서 말일세.”
‘무슨 초상화 하나에…….’
챈들러 할아버지가 이 초상화에 꽤 신경을 쓰고 있는 건 알았다. 오죽하면 이 에일대까지 찾아와 내 옆에 이렇게 붙어 있으려고 했겠는가.
그러나 그렇다고 해도 이건 좀 심했다.
설마하니 한국에까지 같이 오시겠다고 할 줄이야.
‘최근 들어 더 정정해지신 기분인데.’
미국 내에서 비행기로 이동하는 것과 한국에 오는 건 또 다른 문제였다.
미국에서 거의 지구 반대편에 있다고 해도 좋을 정도로 먼 나라. 그게 한국이 아닌가.
심지어 외국인만큼 아무래도 미국 내의 이동과는 달랐다. 비행기만 해도 장거리용으로 타야 했으니까.
당연히 난 기겁했다. 기껏해야 초상화 그리는 모델이 되겠다고 한국행까지 고려하실 줄이야.
‘진짜로 한국에 나 때문에 오시는 건 아니겠지.’
속으로 식겁한 난 얼른 말리는 모양새를 취했다. 여기서 잘못 대답했다간 한국에 미국 최대 재벌가 전대 회장님이 방문하게 생겼다.
“아니, 뭐 그렇게까지야……. 괜찮습니다.”
“흐음. 화가 선생이 그렇게 말한다면야. 뭐.”
다행이었다. 반응을 보아하니, 그럴 것 같지는 않았으니까. 사람 불안하게 아쉬워하는 기색이었지만, 어쨌든 내 말에 납득하신 느낌이었다.
‘근데 이 정도면, 한국은 몰라도 홍콩은 확실히 오시겠네.’
이번 아트 바젤 홍콩은 3월 초에 열린다. 원래 아트 바젤 홍콩이 3월 중 딱 3일간 개최하는데, 이번에는 예전에 비해 좀 빠르게 열리는 편이었다.
내 학교생활에도 이게 좋았다. 3월 초에 열리는 만큼 난 한 주 정도만 학교를 빠지면 괜찮았으니까.
잠시 아트 바젤 홍콩에 대해 생각하는 사이. 할아버지께서는 지난번에 먹었던 꿀배 차를 한 잔 더 드시고 계셨다.

아무래도 마음에 단단히 드신 듯 보였다. 전에는 그나마 낯선 기색을 보이시더니, 이번에는 아니었으니까.
익숙하게 차를 들이켜시는 할아버지. 어느새 자연스럽게 한 모금 마신 후 말까지 돌리고 계셨다.
“다이애나가 요즘 들어 다시 붓을 잡기 시작했다네.”
“어? 그래요?”
슬럼프라며 그림을 그리지 못한다던 다이애나. 다행스럽게도 좀 나아진 모양이었다. 다시 그림을 그리기 시작했다는 것을 보니.
“아마 화가 선생에게는 말 안 했나 보지?”
“예. 몰랐습니다.”
이번 학기 난 그녀와 수업이 같은 것이 없었다. 그렇기에 겹치는 시간이라고 해 봐야 고작해야 챈들러 할아버지 댁에서 밥 먹을 때뿐이었다.
“이게 다 화가 선생 덕분이야. 아무래도 뭔가 막혀 있던 게 해결된 듯 시원하다는 얼굴이었거든.”
“좋네요.”
그림이 그려지지 않을 때의 답답함. 전생에서 겪은 기억이 있었다.
갑자기 머리가 멍해지고 아무런 그림이 붓에서 그려지지 않을 때. 화가는 정말로 무기력해진다.
심하면 죽고 싶어지기까지 하니까.
‘이번 생에서는 아직 없었지.’
이번 생의 새로움에 적응하느라 바빴기 때문일까. 난 이번 생에선 아직 그런 깊은 수렁 같은 늪에 빠진 적이 없었다.
그렇기에 남이 그런 늪을 극복했다는 소식만으로도 좋았다.
“그런 의미에서 이거 내 선물이네만.”
“선물이요?”
“내 손녀딸에 대한 감사 인사를 할아버지가 하지 않으면 누가 하겠나. 후후.”
할아버지는 그렇게 말씀하시며, 봉투를 하나 내미셨다.
“지금 안을 봐도 되나요?”
“물론. 이제 그건 화가 선생 것이니.”
곧바로 봉투를 열어 보았다. 원래 이런 호기심을 오래 참는 성미는 아니었으니까.
그리고 그 안에서 나온 건 낯설지만 익숙한 물건이었다.
“이건…… 비행기 표 맞아요?”
“날짜는 원하는 대로 바꿀 수 있으니, 한국 갈 때 사용하면 딱 좋을 걸세.”
누가 봐도 항공권 느낌이 물씬 풍기는 티켓. 심지어 박혀 있는 글자도 익숙한 것이었다.
“한국항공이네요. 이거.”
“그게 아무래도 화가 선생에게 편하지 않겠어?”
기내식부터 시작해 각종 서비스들까지. 내가 한국인인만큼 아무래도 한국항공이 편하긴 했다.
“퍼스트 클래스…… 이 정도까진 필요 없습니다.”
다만 문제는 여기에 있었다. 미국과 한국을 오가는 비행기값은 절대 싸지 않았다. 하물며 퍼스트 클래스라니. 이 표 한 장의 가격이 얼마인가.
자연스럽게 난 거부의 말이 튀어나왔다. 이건 내게 맛있는 식사를 대접하는 것과는 또 차원이 달랐다.
이 표 하나가 몇천만 원의 값어치를 했으니까.
“그래도 받게나. 이건 다이애나 때문에 주는 선물이기도 하지만, 나 때문에 주는 뇌물이기도 하니까.”
“뇌물이요?”
뇌물이라니. 그게 내게 그런 물건을 줄 이유가 뭐가 있겠는가. 난 그와 같이 사업을 하는 사업가가 아닌데.
“뇌물이란 게 별 게 아니네. 상대방이 잘 봐줬으면, 좋겠어서 미리 선물하는 거니까.”
“비행기 표도 미리 있는데…….”
난 엄연히 에일대에 유학을 온 학생이었다. 당연히 언젠가는 다시 한국에 돌아가는 만큼 미리부터 비행기 티켓을 끊어 둔 상태였다.
“그건 다시 여기 올 때 사용하면 되겠구만. 뭘. 후후.”
그러나 챈들러 할아버지는 내 미약한 반항을 원천 차단했다. 그러더니 내게 준 비행기 표는 잊었다는 듯. 다른 질문을 하시는 게 아닌가.
“그나저나 한국은 언제 가나?”
“3주 뒤요.”
3주일 뒤. 내가 미국 땅을 떠나 한국으로 가는 날이었다. 학기가 완전히 끝난 후 난 겨울방학은 한국에서 보낼 예정이었으니까.

장시간의 비행은 늘 곤욕이었다. 그만큼 오랜만에 돌아온 집은 더 반가웠지만.
“윤성이는 얼른 씻고 나와. 밥부터 먹어야지.”
“기내식 많이 먹어서 좀…….”
진짜로 많이 먹었다. 모르긴 몰라도 비행기 안에서 먹은 것만으로도 살이 붙었을 게 분명했다.
하지만 그 순간 어머니의 얼굴이 눈에 들어왔다. 내가 밥을 먹겠다고 하자 미묘하게 실망한 그 표정을.
이래 보여도 난 효자다. 어머니에게 실망한 기분을 느끼게 만들 수는 없는 법.
“……배가 부른 줄 알았는데. 또 뭐가 먹고 싶긴 하네요.”
“그렇지?”
급격히 밝아지신 눈빛. 내 대답이 정답이었던 게 분명했다. 아니나 다를까. 어머니는 자랑스럽게 입가에 미소를 지으셨다.
“짜잔.”
“우와. 엄청난데. 이걸 다 한 거야?”
내 옆에서 어머니가 하는 걸 바라만 보고 있었던 아버지. 그분의 입에서 이런 탄식이 흘러나올 정도였다.
“아버지도 모르셨어요?”
“몰랐지. 네 엄마가 뭔가 부엌에서 하는 건 알았다만.”
아버지의 말에 따르면 며칠간 부엌에서 뚝딱거리셨다고 했다. 그게 설마하니 이 정도까지 했을 줄은 모르셨던 모양이었다.
“이걸 다 하셨다고요? 고생하셨겠는데요.”
불고기부터 시작해 각종 전까지. 심지어 파김치와 겉절이 같은 것도 얼마 전 만드신 것으로 보였다.
“한 것도 있고, 산 것도 있지.”
“아무리 아들이 온다지만…… 이건 좀 너무 많은 거 아니야?”
아버지께서는 어이가 없으시다는 듯 입을 여셨다. 그런 아버지를 향해 어머니께서 따가운 눈초리를 보내는 게 내 눈에도 잘 보였다.
“윤성이가 거기서 혼자 살면서 얼마나 고생했겠어?”
어머니께서는 장하다는 눈빛으로 날 바라보셨다. 해외에서 아주 힘겹게 살다 온 자식을 보는 그 눈초리. 그 눈빛에 난 저절로 얼굴이 뜨거워졌다.
‘딱히 안 그랬는데…….’
난 에일대에서의 내 생활을 돌이켰다. 딱히 먹고 싶은 걸 못 먹어 본 기억은 없었다.
오히려 난 잘 먹고 다닌 편에 속했다. 챈들러 할아버지 댁에 갈 때마다 아주 푸짐하게 대접을 받을 수 있었으니까.
그러나 어머니께서는 절대 그렇게 생각하지 않으시는 듯 보였다.
“먹고 싶은 것도 제대로 못 먹고 고생만 했을 게 뻔한데.”
“……딱히 안 그런 거 같던데.”
아버지께서 나와 비슷한 걸 떠올리고 계신 게 분명했다. 그것도 그럴게. 난 분명 부모님에게 간단히 말씀드렸다.
챈들러 할아버지를 알게 되어서 자주 대접을 받는다고.
“분명 우리 같이 듣지 않았어? 윤성이 에일대 생활.”
“당신도 참. 그게 집밥이랑 같아?”
“아니. 뭐. 엄마 밥이랑 다른 건 맞으니까.”
아내의 매서운 눈초리 때문일까. 그는 얼른 맞장구를 쳤다. 아무리 맛있어도 또 집밥과는 느낌이 다른 게 사람 아니겠는가.
“그리고! 잘 먹었다고 해도 서양 음식이잖아. 그게 한식이랑 같을 리가 없어. 안 그러니? 윤성아?”
“그럼요. 한식이 최고죠.”
달달한 걸 좋아하는 나지만, 역시나 고향 느낌이 물씬 풍기는 음식이 제일 좋긴 했다.
분명 기내에서 식사를 많이 먹었는데. 왜 이걸 보니 또 입맛이 도는지 모르겠다.

“와. 진짜 맛있네요.”
“그러니? 맛있다니 다행이네.”
“어머니 솜씨가 더 느신 것 같은데요.”
“호호. 얘도 참.”
오랜만에 하는 한국에서의 식사는 즐거웠다. 특히나 부모님과 하니, 이 좋은 기분은 배가 되는 느낌이었다.
처음에는 껄끄러웠던 입맛도 막상 밥을 입에 넣기 시작하자 돌아왔다. 덕분에 난 최초의 예상과 달리 술술 식사를 하는 중이었다.
“그럼 방학 때는 좀 쉬는 거야?”
식사를 하면서도 부모님은 내 최근 동향이 궁금하신 듯했다. 아버지께서 이런 질문을 하시는 걸 보니.
“쉬면서 아트 바젤 거 마무리 지어야 해요.”
“그럼 쉬는 게 아니지. 계속 힘들 텐데.”
“그래도 재미있으니까요. 게다가…….”
“게다가?”
“뭐. 그래도 미국에서 그림들이 온전히 오기 전에는 놀 수 있어요.”
“그게 얼마나 걸리는데?”
“한…… 3일에서 5일 사이쯤? 손상 없이 국제 배송하려면 아무래도 시간이 좀 걸리니까요.”
“하긴. 그림 배송이 일반 택배는 아닐 테니까.”
“네에. 라고시안이 신경 써서 해 주는 만큼 그래도 보통보다는 빠를 거예요.”
“그럼 그 기간 동안 뭘 할 건데?”
