144화 그 표정은 뭐야?
추상화, 풍경화, 풍속화 등 그림을 구분 짓는 단어는 많았다. 과거 신윤복의 그림도 풍속화의 한 종류였으니까.
그러나 다시 태어난 이 시대, 내 그림은 모호한 경우가 많았다.
주변의 풍경을 그린 풍속화에 가까운 풍경화. 동양적인 색채가 드러나는 유화. 서양적인 느낌이 강한 수채화.
꿈을 표현한 추상화에 가까운 상상화 등 대부분이 여러 종류가 섞인 느낌이었으니.
다른 사람이 쉽게 따라 할 수 없는 이런 독특함은 전생의 기억을 가진 나만의 장점이었다. 그 덕분에 내 그림은 더 특별해졌으니까.
하지만 이건 이번 작가와의 대담 때는 불리할 수 있었다. 이런 독특함을 단 한 문장만으로 사람들의 뇌리에 박아 넣는 건 쉬운 일이 아니었기에.
그걸 위에 난 섬세하게 설계하기 시작했다. 오늘은 그걸 사람들 앞에서 보여 줄 차례였다.
‘제일 먼저는 직관적일수록 좋겠지.’
내가 선택한 첫 번째 작품. 그건 바로 초상화였다.
전대 회장인 윌슨 할아버지를 그린 그림. 그 옆에 붙은 한지를 손으로 쓰다듬은 난 입을 열었다.
“이건 죽기 전, 자신의 초상화를 남기고 싶었던 한 사람을 그린 것입니다. 선 하나하나에 그 사람의 특징을 담아 보려고 노력했죠.”
그렇게 말한 난 이미 생각해 둔 문장을 써 내려갔다. 제일 먼저는 한국어였다.

하나는 전생과 이번 생에서의 내 모국어인 한국어. 두 번째는 이번 생에서 무엇보다 열심히 배운 외국어인 영어. 마지막은 모국어만큼이나 붓으로 쓰는 데 익숙한 외국어인 한자어였다.
한국어를 쓸 때는 반응이 없던 사람들이 영어로 쓰고 한자로 쓰자 반응하는 게 느껴졌다.
‘확실히 여긴 영어와 한자가 익숙하네.’
초상화로 시작하길 잘했다. 내가 쓴 글귀를 보며 사람들이 다시 한번 내 그림을 바라보는 게 느껴졌으니까.
감각적인 면이 강한 다른 작품들과 달리 누가 봐도 직관적인 사람의 얼굴. 그걸 한번 흘끔 바라본 난 걸음을 옮겼다. 나에겐 아직 다른 13점의 작품이 남아 있었으니까.
‘그럼 나머지도 계속해 볼까.’
시작이 좋으면 끝이 좋은 법. 난 기분 좋게 이 행사가 마무리될 것을 믿으며 다음 작품을 향해 걸어갔다.

저우동과 지앙후아는 정말로 딱 시간에 맞춰서 다시 그 자리로 갔다. 직원의 말은 정확했다.
진짜로 사람이 많았으니까. 그리고 여러 직원들이 이 자리에 온 관객들을 질서정연하게 만들기 위해 통제 중이었다.
“잠시만 뒤로 물러나 주세요.”
“한 발자국만 뒤로 물러서 주시길 부탁드립니다.”
그림을 감상하는 이들을 향해 한 발자국 떨어져서 봐 달라고 종종 말하는 직원들. 그런 그들이 지금은 그보다 더 뒤로 물러나길 당부하고 있었다.
마치 그림과 사람 사이에 누군가 지나갈 길을 만들 듯이.
“이거…… 작가가 걸어 다니면서 뭔가 하는 모양인데?”
“어? 그게 무슨 소리야?”
“봐 봐. 딱 한 사람이 들어갈 공간만 만들고 있잖아.”
그랬다. 그들이 만드는 건 길로 보였다. 작품과 사람 사이에 만드는 그 공간을 보며 다른 이들도 슬슬 눈치를 채는 듯 보였다.
“잘은 모르겠지만, 뭔가 걸어 다니면서 하긴 하나 보네.”
아니나 다를까, 그림 옆에는 하나둘 종이까지 붙이는 게 보였다. 이쯤 되자 작가가 뭘 할지 다들 슬슬 궁금해지는 지경에 이르렀기에.
‘뭘 하려는 걸까?’
호기심은 잠깐이었다. 금세 주인공이 나타났으니까.
“안녕하세요. 신윤성이라고 합니다.”
또박또박한 말투에 공손하게 고개를 숙이는 인사까지. 깍듯한 예의보다 더 먼저 들어오는 건 작가의 어린 얼굴이었다.
그녀의 예상과 다른 앳된 인상. 이런 그림을 그린 화가의 나이가 고작해야 갓 청소년 벗어났을 정도였다니.
‘뭐가 저렇게 어려?’
그녀가 그림에 대해 잘 모르지만, 이거 하나는 확실하게 알았다. 이 세계에서 연륜을 무시할 수 있는 건 없다는 점이었다. 그건 예술계일수록 더하리라.
천재라고 불리는 이들도 마찬가지였다. 어린 천재보다는 나이 든 천재가 더 훌륭한 작품을 만들 확률이 높았다.
하물며 다른 사람의 앞에서 자신의 세계를 드러내는 건 더했다. 그건 누가 봐도 나이를 먹고 세상을 겪어야 잘하는 게 분명했기에.
‘긴장해서 말은 잘하려나 모르겠네.’
그녀는 이미 윤성 작가의 작품을 본 상태였다. 그렇기에 걱정되었다. 아직 어린 나이의 아이가 모든 분야에서 다 잘할 수는 없었으니까.
눈앞의 이 화가는 이미 그림 하나만 가지고도 충분히 대단했다. 그녀는 상대가 내놓은 작품을 모두 보았기에 더 걱정되었다. 좋은 작품이 괜히 작가가 나서서 망가질 수도 있다는 생각이 들었으니까.
그러나 이런 생각은 오래가지 못했다. 그가 판 위에 놓인 붓을 드는 순간 분위기가 바뀌었으니 말이다.
‘어?’
은은하게 웃음기 어린 얼굴. 거기서 미소가 사라졌다. 그리고 뚫어져라 종이를 바라보는 아이. 아니 윤성 작가는 순식간에 한 문장을 써 내려갔다.
그건 한국어였다. 그렇기에 무슨 소리인지 알아들을 수 없었다. 그녀는 한국말을 할 줄 몰랐으니까.
하지만 그럼에도 그 문장에서 느껴지는 힘이 있었다. 그리고 이 힘은 그녀가 알아듣는 말이 나왔을 때 비로소 강도를 더했다.
‘이게…… 글씨라고?’
물론 객관적으로 보면 분명 그건 한 문장이었다.
그러나 그 그림 옆에 문장이 붙는 순간부터 그건 단순한 글로 보이지 않았다. 그림과 어우러져 하나의 세트로 보일 정도였으니까.
이미 문장을 생각해 왔다는 듯 작가는 글을 쓰는 데 망설임이 없었다. 그가 말을 할 때는 움직일 때뿐이었다. 하나의 작품에서 다음 작품으로 넘어가는 사이. 그 짧은 걸음 사이사이에만 그는 말을 덧붙였다.
그가 문장을 쓸 때는 말이 필요 없다는 듯이. 이건 그 어떤 작품 옆에서도 마찬가지였다. 초상화 옆에서도, 병풍 옆에서도 같았다는 의미였다.
동시에 알아차릴 수 있었다. 왜 직원들이 작품에서 한 발자국만 더 떨어져 달라고 했는지.
그건 신윤성 작가. 그가 걸어갈 길을 만들기 위함이었으니.
그는 오래전부터 이 길을 걸어 봤다는 듯이 자연스럽게 움직였다. 움직이면서 간단간단하게 작품에 대해 이야기를 하는 것도 잊지 않았다.
그러나 능숙한 그의 말보다 더 눈에 들어오는 것. 그건 그가 직접 한 글자씩 작성한 글귀였다.
그림의 옆에 적혀진 각기 다른 문장들. 한국어와 영어. 마지막으로 한자까지. 그건 여기 있는 모든 사람을 사로잡기에 충분했다. 이 자리에 있는 어지간한 사람들은 그 셋 중 하나는 확실하게 알아볼 수 있었으니까.
‘이게 진짜 재능이구나.’
힘 있게 뻗은 곧은 선에 유려한 필체. 수없이 많이 이 문장을 연습했다는 듯이 불필요한 요소는 조금도 없었다.
사실 한지 위에 쓰는 붓글씨의 특징상 실수를 돌이킬 수는 없었다. 잘못 쓰면 종이를 바꿔 다시 써야 했다.
그러나 그는 조금도 실수를 생각하지 않는 듯했다. 판에 붙어 있는 종이는 단 한 장. 그리고 그의 손은 단 한 순간도 멈춤이 없었다.
머뭇거림이나 망설임 대신 들어가 있는 것. 그건 글자 하나하나에 깃들어 있는 개성이었으니.
그림마다 미묘하게 글씨체가 달라지는 기분이었다. 사람이 이렇게나 많은 글씨체를 가질 수 있다고? 지금 여기 있는 작품은 모두 14점이나 되는데?
그의 손에서 써진 문장은 작품에 대한 단순한 설명이 아니었다. 그건 이미 옆의 그림과 함께하는 작품이라고 해도 좋을 정도였기에.
“이상으로 오늘 준비한 작가와의 대담이 끝났네요. 다들 끝까지 자리를 지켜 주셔서 감사드립니다.”

주변에서 꽤 큰 박수 소리가 들렸다. 여기가 조용히 전시를 관람하는 아트 페어임을 감안하면 꽤 큰 소리였다.
그 순간이었다. 조명 때문일까. 그녀는 조금 전까지 보이지 않던 게 눈에 들어오기 시작했다.
‘땀이…….’
신윤성이라고 했던가. 그 작가의 이마가 반짝이는 게 보였다. 그건 누가 뭐라고 해도 땀이었다. 얼마나 집중해서 글을 쓰면 고작 몇 문장을 적는 데 땀이 흐른다는 말인가.
‘이걸 글을 썼다고 할 수 있나?’
글보다는 그림에 가까운 유려한 문장들. 가만히 그걸 보던 그녀의 어깨를 누군가 잡는 게 느껴졌다.
“아무래도 끝난 것 같은데…….”
그녀는 남편의 목소리를 들으며, 퍼뜩 정신을 차렸다. 멍하니 작가가 쓰는 글을 따라가다 보니 어느새 작가와의 대담이 끝나 있었다.

‘분명 예정 시간은 한 시간이라고 했는데?’
어이가 없어진 그녀는 본인의 시계부터 확인했다. 손목에서 빛나는 예쁜 시계는 초 단위까지 정확한 시간을 알려 주고 있었다.
그들은 정확했다. 정말로 이미 한 시간이 흘러있었으니까.
“뭐야…… 이게 작가와의 대담이야?”
대담이라기엔 말은 그리 많지 않았다. 하지만 말보다 한 번 보여 주는 게 낫다는 말처럼 그는 그림에 글을 더해 확실하게 선보였다.
그 어떤 대담보다 본인의 작품 세계를 여기 있는 사람들 모두에게 각인시켰으니. 이제 사람들은 그 문장을 보면 그의 그림을 자연스럽게 떠올릴 것이다.
당장 그녀부터가 그럴 것 같았으니까. 그러니까 이건 대담이 맞았다. 말 대신에 그림 속에 빠뜨려 버린 그런 대담.
“무슨 마술을 본 기분인데. 나만 이래?”
그렇기에 더 묘한 기분이었다. 집중해서 한 자씩 써 내려가는 문장들은 가만히 사람을 바라보게 만드는 힘이 있었다.
“우리 잠깐 다시 좀 보다 가자. 나 글씨랑 그림을 같이 보고 싶어.”
“으흠. 천천히 봐도 좋다면 뭐…….”
남편이 애매하게 말한 이유가 있었다. 아무래도 그림과 글을 다시 보고 싶다고 생각한 건 그녀뿐만이 아닌 모양이었으니.
사람들이 모두 옹기종기 윤성 작가의 작품 앞에 모여 있는 게 보였다. 다들 방금 본 글귀가 더해진 그림을 다시 감상하느라 바쁜 게 분명했다.
“……우리도 같이 보자.”
사람들이 본다고 물러설 수는 없는 법. 이 감동은 지금이 아니면 느끼기 어려울 게 뻔했기에.
그녀는 한층 더 가까이 다가갔다.
“혹시 원래 작가와의 대담이 이런 식으로 해?”
그녀는 아직 미술에 익숙하지 않았다. 그러나 남편은 달랐다. 오늘도 그의 안내에 따라 여기 온 게 아닌가.
그녀와 달리 그는 이런 류의 퍼포먼스를 많이 봤을 수도 있었다. 그러나 그는 고개를 저으며 부정했다.
“그럴 리가 없잖아. 나도 이런 건 처음이야.”
그는 턱을 쓰다듬으며 입을 열었다. 과거 그가 겪었던 각종 아트 페어들을 떠올리는 게 분명했다.
“예전에 다른 아트 페어에서 작가가 나와서 아예 그림 하나를 그리는 건 본 적이 있어.”
“오. 그래?”
“그것도 신기하긴 했는데. 이건 더한걸.”
그의 말에 의문이 떠올랐다. 글을 쓰는 것보다는 작품 하나를 완성하는 게 더 품이 많이 들어가는 게 당연했으니까.
“더하다니? 그럼이 더 어려운 거 아니야?”
“아니야. 그 그림은…… 진짜 간단한 거였거든. 점만 좀 찍는 형식 말이야.”
그의 주변에 있는 작품들과 달랐다. 단순히 점만 찍는 방식이나 이상한 선만 늘여 놓는 것과 달리 그들의 근처에 있는 신윤성 작가의 그림은 하나의 작품이었으니까.
아니나 다를까, 그는 그녀의 생각과 비슷한 의견을 말하기 시작했다.
“그런데 이건 아예 글을 쓰는 거잖아. 그것도 영어랑, 광동어랑…… 근데 저거 하나는 한국어 맞지?”
역시나 그도 한국어를 알아보는 듯 보였다.
‘하긴 요즘 K팝이나 드라마가 유행이긴 하지.’
다즈니를 포함해 각종 OTT 서비스들이 한국산 드라마를 많이 보여 주고 있었다. 그렇기에 이제 홍콩에서 한국어는 뜻을 알아듣지는 못해도 그게 한국어라는 걸 알아볼 정도에 이르렀다.
“한국어 맞아. 다즈니에서 드라마 봤는데, 거기 나온 말들이 다 저런 모양으로 생겼더라.”
“드라마? 뭐 봤는데?”
“최근 유명한……. 아무튼, 지금 이게 중요한 게 아니고. 진짜 저 어린 화가가 대단하다고 느낀 건 스타일이야.”
“스타일이라니?”
잠시 다른 길로 샐 뻔했다. 하지만 그런 그들의 대화를 다시 붙잡은 건 눈앞에 있는 그림의 힘이었다.
