145화 입장 기록이 얼마라고?
어쩐지 그림 앞에 있으니, 다른 주제의 이야기를 하다가도 다시 작품 쪽으로 돌아오는 기분이었다.
그 덕분일까. 두 사람은 자연스럽게 다시 그림에 대해 말하는 중이었다.
“이거 모든 문장이 다 글씨체가 묘하게 달라.”
옆에 서 있는 남편의 말에 그제야 좀 더 자세히 글을 살펴보게 되었다.
정말이었다. 글씨의 끝부분이나 두께감. 이런 부분들이 미묘하지만 분명한 차이가 있었다.
‘그림과 글이 이 정도로 잘 어우러질 수 있다니. 진짜 작가 아무나 하는 거 아니구나.’
서양화풍 그림에 이렇게 글을 쓴 걸 보자 더 신기한 기분이었다. 예전 동양화에서나 볼 수 있는 모습이었기에.
“진짜 좀 다른 것 같네. 와…… 이걸 그렇게 단번에 쓴 거구나.”
“그치? 마치 그림을 각기 다르게 그려 둔 기분이야.”
그림에 걸맞은 문장. 그리고 그 문장에 걸맞은 글씨체. 이걸 쓰기 위해서 몇 번을 연습했을지 궁금해질 정도였다.
가만히 그림과 글을 보던 그녀는 문득 머릿속에 든 질문이 있었다.
“이런 행사 말이야. 자주 하는 편이야?”
“이런 행사면…… 아트 바젤 홍콩을 말하는 거야?”
“응, 바로 그거.”
그녀의 질문에 남편은 턱을 쓰다듬었다. 곰곰이 무언가를 생각하는 기색이던 그는 이내 입을 열었다.
“일단 매년 열리는 거로 알긴 하는데…….”
그의 말에 그녀의 눈빛이 빛났다. 그러더니 이내 추궁하듯 연속적으로 질문을 쏟아 냈다.
“매년이면 1년에 한 번은 한다는 거지?”
“……그렇지. 그런데 그건 갑자기 왜?”
“휴, 다행이네. 1년이면 넉넉하진 않아도 충분하긴 하지.”
“그러니까 뭐가?”
여전히 영문을 모르겠다는 남편을 향해 그녀는 눈을 흘겼다. 아직도 척하면 착하고 알아듣지 못하는 상대를 보며 그녀는 제 속내를 드러내었다.
“뭐긴 뭐겠어. 돈 모으는 것 말이야.”
“……엉?”
“시장 조사는 한번 했으니, 다음번에는 실전에 들어가야지.”
“……그러니까 지금 그림을 사겠다는 거지?”
그의 물음에 그녀는 주먹을 움켜쥐었다. 그러더니 진지한 얼굴로 남편에게 결심을 털어놓았다.
“맞아. 다음번에 이런 행사 하면 오늘 본 그 작가님 작품 살래.”
“…….”
“그 표정은 뭐야?”
굳세게 결심한 그녀의 말에 남편의 표정이 오묘해지는 게 보였다. 그 의미를 알 수 없는 눈빛에 그녀는 결국 다시 물어보고야 말았다.
“뭔가 이런 말 하기 좀 그렇긴 한데…… 당신 이 작품이 얼마인지 까먹은 거야?”
꽤나 조심스럽지만, 어딘가 떨떠름한 어조. 남편의 그 말에 그녀는 입술을 한 번 깨물었다 입을 열었다.
“비싸다는 거 알아. 그런데 보통 그림은 크기에 가격이 비례하는 편이잖아. 윤성 작가님 것도 그렇고.”
작가님. 이제는 신윤성 작가를 그렇게 부르는 그녀였다. 좋은 작품은 그 작품을 만드는 주인인 작가에게 절로 공손하게 만들었다.
“그야 그렇지.”
“저 병풍과도 같은 대형 작품은 무리지만…… 작은 거라면 살 수도 있을 것 같아서.”
명품 가방이나 시계. 혹은 스포츠카도 돈을 모아 사는 세상 아닌가. 1년이나 시간이 있다면 좋은 작품을 위해 자금을 모으는 것 정도는 일도 아니었다.
“그러니까 다음번에도 우리 또 오자. 그때는 이왕이면 빨리 오면 좋을 것 같은데.”
그림마다 붙어 있는 빨간 스티커의 주인. 다음번에는 그 자리를 노려 보기로 한 그녀였다.

‘후, 집중했더니 힘드네.’
14점의 작품에 대해 모든 글귀를 쓴 난 대기실 겸 휴게실이라고 할 수 있는 방으로 돌아왔다.
다 끝났으니 숙소로 돌아가야 하는 건 이미 알고 있었다. 그런데도 난 잠시 널브러져 있는 중이었다.
글을 쓰는 건 단순해 보여도 생각보다 체력 소진이 많았다. 특히나 단 한 번도 실패해선 안 된다는 제한은 내 체력을 더 잡아먹기 딱 좋았다.
‘좀만 더 쉬다가 돌아갈까. 그리고 나면 다시…….’
잠시 후의 미래를 계획하는 그때. 내 귀에 꽂히는 소란이 있었으니.
“안 됩니다!”
“그냥 여기서 기다리기만 하겠습니다.”
“여기서 기다리겠다는 것 자체가 무례인 걸 모르십니까?”
“진짜 잠깐이면 됩니다.”
이곳의 방음은 그리 좋은 편이 아니었다. 원래 있는 거대한 공간에 전시를 위해 가벽을 설치하고 또 그 안에 대기실을 만들어 둔 것이었기에.
사람의 시선을 피하긴 딱 좋았지만, 그렇다고 모든 소리까지 차단하는 건 아니었다.
그 때문일까. 가끔 밖에서 하는 소리가 들리곤 했다. 그렇다고 해도 고작해야 웅성대는 정도였는데. 이 정도로 또렷하게 들리는 건 처음이었지만.
‘이건 뭐. 거의 들으라는 수준인데.’
그렇다면 밖으로 나가 봐야 하는 걸까. 내가 속으로 고민하는 사이. 문에서 인기척이 들려왔다.
똑똑―
“작가님. 저 필립입니다.”
“네에. 들어오세요.”
문을 여는 그 찰나. 난 재빠르게 밖을 살폈다. 그리고 거기엔 내 예상대로 몇몇 사람들이 서 있는 것이 보였다.
그들 또한 내 얼굴을 봤기 때문일까. 눈들이 커지는 게 보였으니.

물론 그건 매우 찰나였다. 필립이 들어오면서 가차 없이 문을 닫아 버렸기에.
“밖이 좀 소란스럽네요?”
“아하하하. 별건 아닙니다.”
“별건 아니라는 건 뭔가 있기는 있다는 거네요?”
“…….”
내가 진짜 궁금하다는 눈빛을 비췄기 때문일까. 필립은 예상보다 순순하게 입을 열었다.
“후…… 진짜 별건 아닙니다. 그냥 기자들이 꽤 와 있을 뿐이니까요.”
“기자요?”
순간적으로 난 이해가 가지 않았다.
‘물론 기자가 오는 게 이상할 건 없지만, 저렇게까지 내 대기실 앞에 있는다고?’
이 시대 화가란 존재는 대중에게 아주 친숙한 이들은 아니었다. 스타성이 강한 체육계나 음악계에 비하면 더더욱. 상대적으로 유명세가 덜했으니까.
그렇기에 보통 기자들이 이 정도로 열정적으로 반응하는 일도 없었다. 정식으로 절차를 밟아서 찾아오는 것이 더 일반적이었다.
“그 기자가 왜 저러고 있는 건데요?”
“작가님 말씀 하나라도 인터뷰에 싣기 위함이겠죠.”
“제 말이라니…… 그럼 정식으로 인터뷰 요청하면 되잖아요?”
“안 그래도 그 또한 이미 들어왔습니다.”
그러면서 필립은 눈을 빛냈다. 마침 내가 잘 말해서 고맙다는 그 기색에 난 어색한 미소를 지었다.
어째 내 스스로가 알아서 일거리를 불러들인 기분이었으니까.
아니나 다를까, 그는 내게 한 자료들을 보여 주었다.
“작업과 학업. 그 두 가지 때문에 작가님께서는 바쁘다고 하셨죠. 그래서 인터뷰들을 딱히 하진 않았습니다.”
사실이었다. 원래대로면 난 작가와의 대담을 하기 전 여러 형태의 인터뷰를 할 뻔했다. 라고시안이 내게 그걸 권하기도 했고 말이다.
그러나 난 이를 거부했다. 인터뷰를 많이 하는 것보다는 학업이. 그리고 학업보다는 내 작품을 그려 내는 것이 더 우선이었으니까.
“헌데, 이번에는 진짜 인터뷰를 하셔야 할 수도 있을 것 같아요.”
“그게 왜요?”
“작가님의 대담이 진짜 관심을 끌었거든요.”
“제 대담이요?”
“예. 그런 식으로 작가와의 대담을 한 사람은 지금껏 단 한 명도 없었으니까요.”
“단 한 명도 없었을 거라는 건…….”
아무리 그래도 그건 좀 과한 표현이었다. 이 발전된 시대의 인구만 해도 몇인가. 그중에 이런 사람이 없었다는 건 말이 되지 않았다.
“확신합니다. 진짜 없었을 거예요.”
하지만 필립은 이에 동의하지 않는 모양이었으니. 그는 고개를 절레절레 저으며 자신의 의견을 전했다.
“일단 그렇게 단 한 번의 실수 없이 글을 쓴다는 게 쉽지 않죠. 하물며 세 개 국어를 다 능숙하게 하셨죠”
그건 확실히 어려운 부분이었다. 한국어와 영어 그리고 한자까지. 셋 다 완전 모양과 성격이 다른 언어이기에 심혈을 기울여야 하긴 했다.
“거기다 그림을 그리는 화가분들이라고 무조건 다 글씨를 잘 쓰는 게 아니거든요. 하물며 붓글씨라면야 뭐……. 한술 더 뜨죠.”
많은 이들이 하는 오해가 있었다. 화가들은 그림을 그리는 것처럼 글씨를 잘 쓸 거라는 오해.
그러나 이건 반만 맞았다. 화가 중에는 악필이라고 할 만한 사람도 있었으며, 붓글씨를 아예 하지 못하는 이들도 존재했다.
“또한 남들 앞에서 실제로 해내는 건 더욱더 어려운 법이니까요.”
“그건…….”
“마지막으로 14점이나 되는 작품을 표현하는 문장을 1시간 안에 다 써야 하는 체력까지 갖추셔야 하는 일이니, 이걸 하는 사람이 작가님 말고는 없을 수밖에요.”
저렇게 들으니 내가 굉장히 어려운 일을 한 기분이었다.
‘그냥 전생의 기억 덕분에 붓글씨가 익숙한 것뿐인데…….’
기억조차 나지 않는 어린 시절부터 잡아 온 붓. 그리고 그걸 활용해 쓴 글씨. 이번 내 작가와의 대담은 전생의 유산 덕분에 할 수 있었다.
허나, 이를 알 리 없는 필립의 눈에는 내가 한 행사가 유일무이해 보이리라.
어딘가 민망해지는 기분에 볼을 긁적이고 있을 때, 필립은 다시 본론으로 돌아왔다.
“대체 불가능한 작가일수록 사람들은 더 열광하는 법이죠. 그에 따라 인터뷰 요청이 많았습니다만…….”
그는 흘끔 내 눈치를 보며 말을 흐렸다. 무슨 소리를 하려고 저러는지 모르겠다.
“뭐. 아시다시피 작가님께서 그간 인터뷰를 잘 안 해 주시긴 하셨죠. 그러니 더 애가 타는 겁니다. 언론사 측에서요.”
“그런 거였군요.”
“저들 입장에서도 애가 끓다 못해 이제는 참을 수 없는 지경까지 온 거죠. 그래서 작가님이 여기서 나가실 때 하는 단 한마디라도 잡아 보겠다고 저렇게 와 있는 겁니다.”
과연. 이제야 정확하게 밖의 소란에 대해 알 수 있었다. 경호원들과 실랑이한 사람들. 그들이 내가 나가길 기다리고 있다는 것도 같이 깨달을 수 있었다.
‘인터뷰라…… 이제는 좀 해 봐도 좋을 것 같은데.’
아트 페어가 끝나고 나면 상대적으로 좀 여유가 생길 게 분명했다.
사람인 이상 늘 언제나 작품만 쏟아 낼 수는 없는 법. 나 또한 휴식을 취하고 다양한 활동을 하며 다시 창작할 수 있는 기반을 만들어야 했다.
그래야 다음 작품도 잘 나오지 않겠는가. 그런 의미에서 볼 때 인터뷰는 사회 활동 중 하나로 나쁜 게 아니었다.
내 작품 세계를 말로 표현해 보여 줄 수 있는 동시에, 다른 사람들의 반응을 통해 타인의 욕망에 대한 실마리도 찾을 수 있을 테니까.
속내를 정한 난 입가에 미소를 지으며 말문을 열었다.
“으흠. 아트 페어가 끝나고 난 뒤에 잠시 정도는 시간을 낼 수 있을 것 같긴 한데요.”
“오오오. 그게 정말입니까? 작가님?”
“…….”
필립은 아예 자리에서 벌떡 일어났다. 그러면서 환하게 웃는 것이 그야말로 기분이 하늘로 날아가는 표정이었다. 상대가 너무 좋아하자 순간적으로 난 할 말을 잃어버렸다.
‘그 정도로 내가 무심했나. 이건 좀 과한데.’
활짝 웃으며 눈빛을 빛내는 필립. 그는 내가 한 말을 돌이킬까 봐 걱정하는 모양이었다. 얼른 말을 덧붙이는 것을 보면 말이다.
“그럼 제가 괜찮은 언론사들을 좀 추려 보겠습니다.”
“어…… 저 앞에 있는 사람들은요?”
“그러고 보니 저들 중에는 작가님의 모국에서 오신 분들도 있기는 있습니다만.”
“그래요?”
그 순간 난 아버지가 한 간단한 인터뷰가 생각했다. 이곳에 남몰래 들어온 첫날. 기자로 보이는 사람 중 한 명이 아버지의 인터뷰를 받아 갔었다.
‘그 사람들…… 한국인으로 보였는데. 저 밖에 있으려나?’
그럼 좀 재미있으리라. 아버지가 인터뷰하신 곳에서 나 또한 화가로서 인터뷰를 하게 된다면? 남들은 몰라도 나를 포함한 우리 가족들은 더 흥미로워할 게 분명했다.
이런 내 생각을 알 리 없는 필립. 그는 손바닥을 비비며 굳센 의지를 드러냈다.
“그렇다고 해도 이렇게 함부로 할 수는 없죠. 무려 작가님의 인터뷰이신데! 저희가 정식으로 잡아 보도록 하겠습니다.”
“……그래요, 그럼.”
그 박력 때문일까. 난 결국 필립의 의견을 존중하며 고개를 끄덕일 수밖에 없었다.

아트 바젤 홍콩의 마지막 날이 지났다. 그렇기에 주최 측은 이 행사를 잘 마무리 짓기 위해 총력을 기울이는 중이었다.
그중 하나는 당연히 이곳을 방문한 관람객 수를 체크하는 것이었다.
특히나 기자들이 얼른 방문객의 수치를 공개하라고 하는 중이었기에. 주최 측은 최대한 빨리 통계 작업을 했다.
그리고 이를 처음으로 확인한 한 사람. 그의 입에서 어처구니없다는 기색이 튀어나왔으니.
“입장 기록이 얼마라고?”
이해할 수 없는 숫자. 그 나열에 그는 자기도 모르게 목소리를 높이고야 말았다.
