150화 그림이 거의 지문 수준
미국의 영주권은 외국인으로서 미국에 살 수 있는 권리다. 대형 사고를 치지 않는 이상, 계속 미국에 살 수 있는 권리. 그만큼 외국인들에게 함부로 주지 않는다.
이 시대에 세계 최강대국이라고 불리는 미국. 그렇기에 많은 이들이 이 영주권을 얻고 싶어 하기 때문이었다.
일명 그린 카드. 남들은 수년이 걸려도 얻기 어렵다는 걸 난 내 예상보다 쉽게 얻을 수 있었다.
“근데 제 생각보다 빨랐네요? 최소 몇 년은 걸린다고 들었거든요.”
인기가 높은 만큼 신청자도 많고, 그에 대한 심사도 까다로웠다. 그로 인해 자격이 되어도 그린 카드를 얻기까지가 오래 걸린다고 들었다.

[예. 작가님의 신분상 일반 유학생 비자로 전시회를 하려면 매번 다른 비자를 따야 하니까요.]유학생 비자는 원칙적으론 돈을 벌 수가 없었다. 전시회를 하기 위해 따로 비자를 신청해야 한다는 뜻.
그 번거로움을 없애기 위해서라도 난 이번 참에 그린 카드를 따길 바라긴 했다.
[뭐. 작가님 정도 되시는 분이 미국에서 전시회 많이 열어 주겠다는데 그걸 막을 심사관은 없겠죠.]미국 영주권을 심사하는 심사관들. 그들 또한 사람이었다. 그에 따라 자국의 이득이 뻔히 보이는 걸 막을 만큼 어리석지 않다는 의미였다.
[거기다 외적인 도움도 컸습니다.]“외적인 도움이요?”
[이건 저도 흘려들은 말이라 확실하진 않습니다만…….]필립은 정확하지 않다는 걸 계속 강조했다. 대체 뭔 소리를 하려고 이러나 싶을 정도로.
하지만 이내 나온 그의 말에 난 납득할 수 있었다.
[전대 윌슨 회장님이 도움을 주신 듯합니다.]내가 의뢰를 받아 초상화를 그려 준 사람. 지난 학기 내 포동한 볼살을 책임졌던 할아버지의 이름이 튀어나왔다.
“할아버지가…….”
[예. 큰 도움은 아니겠지만, 뭐 말만 좀 넣어 주시는 정도로도 처리 속도는 충분히 빨라질 수 있죠.]일리가 있었다. 예상보다 빠르게 결과가 나온 데에는 그런 모든 부분들이 전부 영향을 미쳤기 때문이리라.
[어쨌든 그 덕분에 저희는 다음 휘트니 비엔날레도 참가 가능할 듯합니다.]“그래요?”
[예. 솔직히 더 늦어지면, 다음은 무리고…… 그다음이나 노려야 하나 했거든요.]휘트니 비엔날레. 어린 시절 참가했던 베니스 비엔날레처럼 2년에 한 번씩 미국에서 열리는 예술계 행사다.
세계 3대 비엔날레 중 하나로 손꼽히는 명문 비엔날레. 하지만 이 비엔날레는 어릴 때 참가했던 베니스 비엔날레와 명백히 달랐다.
일단 참가 자격부터가 아무나 할 수 있는 게 아니었으니까. ‘미국에 거주하는 자’, 한마디로 말해 시민권이나 영주권은 있어야 이 비엔날레의 작가가 될 수 있었다.
“근데 그거 그렇게 쉽게 참가할 수 있어요? 뭔가 제 기억에는 그러진 않았는데.”
휘트니는 아니지만 난 이미 한 번 다른 세계적인 비엔날레에 참가해 본 적이 있었다.
그렇기에 자연스럽게 든 의문이었다.
“제가 베니스 비엔날레 때는 뭔가 협회랑도 이야기하고 그랬던 기억이 있거든요.”
어린 시절이라고는 하나 난 정확하게 기억하고 있었다. 박현민 선생님과 함께 참가하게 된 베니스 비엔날레.
한국관의 대표로 참가했던 만큼 나름대로 검증 절차가 있었다. 작품을 다 만들고 나서도 그 협회에서 확인을 하러 왔었고.
[그거야 국가관으로 운영되는 베니스 비엔날레의 경우죠.]하지만 필립은 이런 내 말에 부정했다.
[휘트니 비엔날레는 좀 다릅니다. 자세한 건…… 역시 직접 만나서 논의하시는 게 낫겠죠?]전화가 발달했다고는 하지만, 직접 대면하는 것과의 차이는 분명히 있었다. 그렇기에 필립은 중요한 사항에 대한 건 만나서 의논하길 좋아했다.
“아무래도 그런데…… 제가 아직 학기 중이라서요.”
주변의 풍경을 둘러보며 난 입을 열었다. 꽃이 만발한 교정. 이 아름다운 에일대에서 난 학생으로서 수업을 듣는 중이었으니.
[아이고. 그건 걱정 마시죠. 제가 작가님 근처에 가서 작가님의 스케줄에 맞출 예정이니까요.]필립은 호탕하게 웃으며 다음 약속을 기약했다. 최대한 빠르게 직접 이 에일대에 오는 날을 알려 주겠다고 말이다.

리처드 교수는 힘들게 얻은 그림을 자신의 연구실에 걸어 두었다. 유난히 어렵게 구했기 때문일까. 저절로 흐뭇한 미소가 튀어나오는 중이었다.
‘보면 볼수록 좋은 그림이야.’
작품명 . 불꽃을 그림으로 표현한 작품인 만큼 개인 연구실까지 환해지는 기분이었다.
그림을 걸고 나서 그는 자기도 모르게 종종 그림을 감상하곤 했으니. 오랜만에 참으로 좋은 작품을 건진 느낌이었다.
지금도 잠깐의 휴식 시간 동안 그는 또 그림을 감상하고 있었다. 한 손에는 커피를 든 채로.
똑똑―
“교수님, 접니다. 에밀리요.”
그 순간 들려오는 익숙한 제자의 목소리. 그에 리처드는 커피 잔을 내려놓으며 문 앞으로 다가갔다.
“들어오게나.”
“안녕하세요. 교수님.”
이제는 온전히 본인 이름을 올린 강의를 하는 제자. 에밀리를 보며 리처드는 흐뭇한 얼굴로 웃었다.
“이제는 교수님이라고 불러야겠구만. 후후.”
“교수님이라니요. 그냥 원래처럼 에밀리라고 해 주세요.”
부끄럽고 민망하다는 듯 그녀는 머리카락을 배배 꼬았다. 그런 제자를 보며 리처드는 여전히 미소를 지은 채였다.
“아니지. 이제 내 조수가 아니고 강사인데. 그럴 수는 없는 거 아니겠나.”
“그러지 마시고…….”
뭐라고 말하려던 그녀의 입이 다물린 건 그 순간이었다. 에밀리의 눈에 들어온 심상치 않은 광경 때문이었으니.
“어?”
창문에서 들어오는 빛 때문일까. 굉장히 오묘해 보이는 작품이었다. 동양적인 면모와 서양적인 느낌이 같이 드는 그림.
커다란 불꽃을 형상화한 그 그림은 이 공간의 분위기를 바꾸고 있었다.
가만히 있어도 시선을 사로잡는 그림. 어쩐지 계속 바라보고 싶어지는 작품이었다.
“……이 그림은 대체 뭡니까?”
결국 그녀는 이 질문을 먼저 하고야 말았다. 찾아온 용건보다도 더 우선되는 물음이었다.
“오. 자네도 이 그림이 눈에 들어온 모양이네.”
리처드는 그녀의 표정을 보며 더 흐뭇한 얼굴이 되었다. 그런 지도 교수가 어이가 없는 에밀리였다.
“이렇게 걸어 두셨는데, 눈에 안 들어올 리가요.”
그림 자체가 가진 힘도 만만히 않았지만, 놓인 위치도 좋았다. 리처드 교수님께서 이 그림에 대한 애정이 상당함을 알 수 있었으니.
들어오는 사람들의 시선을 사로잡는 위치. 그와 더불어 조명을 잘 받을 수 있는 장소였다.
오랫동안 리처드의 제자로서 이 연구실을 드나든 그녀는 알 수 있었다. 그가 이 자리에 그림을 놓기 전, 꽤나 많은 고민을 했다는 것을.
“후후. 드디어 원한 걸 손에 넣었으니, 마음껏 자랑을 하고 싶어지더라고.”
아니나 다를까. 그는 본인이 그림을 얻게 된 사연을 줄줄이 이야기하기 시작했다. 어지간히 마음에 들었다는 듯이.
“인기가 많은 걸 예상해서 제일 먼저 온라인 뷰잉을 통해 샀지.”
그러면서 그는 학생들이 티켓팅을 하는 기분을 느꼈다며 소감을 전했다. 한순간이라도 그의 선택이 늦었다면, 이 작품을 사지 못했을 것이라 이야기하면서.
“아트 바젤 홍콩이 다 끝난 후에야 내게 배송이 되었지.”
“그럼 온 지 얼마 안 되었겠네요. 그래서 제가 이제 본 거군요.”
고작 며칠을 오지 않았을 뿐. 비교적 최근까지도 이 연구실에 들락거린 그녀였다.
그런 에밀리의 눈에 그림이 띄지 않았던 건 이상한 일이었다. 저 정도의 작품이 구석에 숨어 있다고 해서 눈에 안 들어올 리가 없었기에.
그러나 아예 작품이 이 자리에 없었다면 이야기가 달랐다.
“사실 나도 받은 지 며칠 되지 않았거든. 그래서 잘 보이는 데 걸어 두었네. 당분간은 계속 여기 걸어 둘 걸세.”
피 터지는 티켓팅, 아니 그림팅을 통해 겨우 원하는 그림을 건진 그. 리처드 교수는 에밀리의 옆에서 다시 한번 그림을 보며 흐뭇하다는 표정이 되었다.
그런 그를 보며 에밀리는 작게 한숨을 내쉬었다. 과연 교수님. 한 번 목적으로 하신 건 기어코 이뤄내시는 분다웠다.
“기어코 아트 바젤 홍콩에서 구매를 하셨나 보네요. 윤성 작가의 작품을.”
윤성 신 작가. 리처드 교수가 입학도 채 하지 않은 아이에게 메일까지 수십 통을 보내게 만든 장본인.
그때부터 그의 작품 세계에 빠져 있던 교수님이었다. 기어코 본인의 제자로 끌어들이려고 노력하시더니. 이제는 아예 작품까지 구매하시는 모양이었다.
“……한번에 알아 보겠나?”
“모를 수가요. 이 정도 인상적인 그림을 그리는 화가는 많지 않죠.”
잠깐의 침묵 후 신기하다는 듯 물어본 질문. 그 말을 들은 에밀리는 어이가 없었다. 아무리 그녀가 교수님만은 못하다고는 하지만. 그녀 또한 그림 밥을 먹고 사는 사람이었다.
눈이 바늘구멍이 아닌 이상 이 그림을 알아보지 못할 리가 없었다.
“하물며 윤성 신 작가는 본인만의 트레이드마크가 확실한 편이니까요.”
작가 고유의 색깔이라고도 불리는 것. 신윤성 작가는 그 면모가 뚜렷한 편이었다. 그 때문일까. 몇 번 관심을 가진 사람이라면 해당 작가의 작품을 잘 알아볼 수 있었다.
“하긴…… 이쯤 되면 거의 그림이 지문 수준이지. 후후.”
일반 사람들이야 모를 수도 있었다. 그러나 리처드나 에밀리와 같이 이쪽 업계의 사람이라면 당연히 알아보리라.
그 정도로 신윤성 작가의 그림에는 작품 자체가 가진 힘이 있었으니.
“이게 아직 학부생의 그림이라니…… 진짜 말도 안 되는 수준이긴 하네요.”
가까이에서 실물을 보니 더 실감이 났다. 이게 아트 바젤 홍콩에 나온 것인 만큼 비교적 최근 작품이리라. 그렇기에 더 확실하게 피부에 와 닿았다.
이건 이제 단순히 재능이 있는 학생의 수준을 아득히 넘기고 있었으니까.
“괜히 최근 가장 주목받는 작가 중 한 명인 게 아니지.”
“수채화와 유화, 게다가 아크릴까지 섞어 사용했네요.”
매번 볼 때마다 놀라웠다. 그녀가 본 윤성은 물감을 굉장히 감각적으로 사용하는 작가였다.
“이 세 가지 물감을 이렇게까지 다룰 수 있는 작가는 많지 않을걸. 하물며 살아 있는 사람 중에선.”
“그렇겠죠. 특성 차이가 심한 물감들이니까요.”
기름 성분인 유화. 물을 주재료로 하는 수채화는 아예 그리는 방식부터가 달랐다. 거기에 그 중간에 가까운 특성을 가진 아크릴 물감까지 들어가면 그 그림의 난이도는 기하급수적으로 상승했다.
“단지 그거뿐만은 아니지 않나?”
“……요즘 학생들이 기본기가 좀 부족한 편이긴 하죠.”
그의 작품이 남들보다 더 눈에 들어오는 이유. 그건 요근래 아이들답지 않다는 것에 있었다.
아이디어나 생각. 다들 거기에만 매몰되어 어떻게 하면 더 특이하고 해괴한 그림만 그릴지 고민할 뿐.
기본적인 물감을 다루려는 노력은 예전만 못한 게 요즘의 학생들이었기에.
“후후. 왜, 수업해 보니 확실히 알겠어?”
“……예. 몇 년 사이에도 확 달라지고 있는 게 체감이 되네요.”
“어쩔 수 없지. 도구가 발달한 것도 있겠고…….”
“에일대 입시에서 기본기를 덜 보는 영향도 있겠죠.”
그 말을 끝으로 두 사람은 누가 먼저랄 것도 없이 입을 다물었다. 가만히 그림을 감상하기 위함이었으니.
특히나 불멍을 하듯 멍한 표정으로 그림을 보는 에밀리. 그런 제자를 본 리처드는 피식 웃으며 다시 커피를 내렸다.
이왕이면 커피 한 잔과 함께 감상을 하면 더 좋지 않겠는가. 그가 방금 그랬던 것처럼.
얼마나 시간이 흘렀을까. 먼저 입을 연 건 에밀리 쪽이었다.
“교수님. 드릴 말씀이 있습니다.”
“오. 우리 새로운 교수님께서 여기까지 찾아온 용건인가?”
“……그러니까 그렇게 부르지 마시래도요.”
한 번 더 지도 교수님을 타박한 에밀리. 그녀는 드디어 이 자리에 온 본론을 꺼내 들었다.
그림을 살펴보느라 상대적으로 뒤쪽으로 밀려 버렸던 바로 그 본론을 말이다.
“다른 게 아니고…… 교환 학생 관련입니다.”
에일대에 다니는 학생 중 일부를 다른 학교에서도 공부하게 만들어 주는 제도. 에밀리가 리처드 교수를 찾아온 이유는 이 교환 학생 제도 때문이었다.
