전생이 먹고 살기도 어려울 정도로 생계가 어려웠던 것과 달리, 이번 생은 먹을 복이 있는 게 분명했다.
지난 학기에는 전대 회장님이 내 밥을 책임지시더니, 이번 학기에는 선배들이 종종 밥을 사겠다고 뜻을 전했다.
그중 한 사람이 계속 연락이 왔기에 오늘 만나기로 했으니.
“진짜 이렇게까지 안 하셔도 되는데요.”
그냥 둘러보기만 해도 이 식당이 비싸다는 걸 알 수 있었다.
오늘 내게 밥을 사 주기로 한 데이빗 선배. 그는 나와 같은 에일대학교의 학생이었다. 이 정도의 가격대를 손쉽게 턱턱 살 정도의 부자가 아닌 보통의 학생 말이다.

“절대 안 되지! 우리가 무려 1등을 했는데!”
“대상을 탔다는 건 저도 알고 있지만…….”
내가 섬네일을 그려서 제출한 영상. 그건 결국 다즈니 공모전에서 최고의 상인 대상을 수상하고야 말았다.
최종심에 올라온 다른 작품에 비해 워낙 시청한 사람의 숫자가 압도적이긴 했다. 그만큼 반응도 뜨거웠고 말이다.
그 덕분일까. 선배들은 돌아가면서 내게 밥을 산다고 하는 중이었다.
“지난주에는 제시카가 샀잖아? 그럼 이번 주는 내 차례지.”
사뭇 당당하게 말하는 데이빗 선배. 그를 보며 난 메뉴판을 집어 들었다. 저렇게까지 말하니, 그냥 내 선에서 적당한 음식을 고르기 위함이었다.
“전 이거요.”
내가 고른 음식과 함께 데이빗 선배는 자신의 것도 함께 주문했다. 그러고 나서야 우리는 본격적인 이야기를 시작할 수 있었다.
“저도 같은 팀원 중 하나였는데…… 이렇게까지 고맙다며 먹을 걸 사 주시니, 어쩐지 민망하네요.”
“팀원들이 다 네게 밥을 사는 이유는 간단해. 네가 우리의 졸업 이후의 삶에 막대한 영향을 줬으니까.”
“졸업 이후요?”
“응. 다들 이제 곧 졸업반이잖아. 슬슬 졸업 작품도 준비할 때고.”
하기야. 그들은 다음 9월이 되면 이제 4학년이 되는 시기였다. 곧 이 대학교라는 울타리를 떠나 다른 곳으로 갈 때라는 의미였다.
“그런 와중에 이번 공모전이 소위 말하는 대박이 터지면서 다들 이미 좋은 자리를 찜해 둔 상태거든.”
“좋은 자리라면 뭘 말하는 건데요?”
“뭐긴 뭐겠어. 취업이지. 애들이 다즈니부터 시작해서 괜찮은 곳들로 전부 합격했으니까.”
그러고 보니 대학을 졸업하면 취업 시장에 뛰어드는 경우가 많았다.
나야 전생과 이번 생 모두 홀로 그림을 그리기로 마음먹은 상태였기에. 상대적으로 이에 대한 관심이 덜했다.
그러나 선배들은 다른 듯 보였다. 좋은 자리를 맡았다는 것 하나만 가지고도 이렇게나 밥을 사겠다고 하는 걸 보면.

“너야 누가 봐도 순수 미술계에서 이미 자리 잡은 작가니까. 보통은 그렇게 못하거든.”
이에 대해 내가 뭐라고 답을 하기 전 우리의 대화에 끼어드는 사람이 있었다.
“음식 나왔습니다. 어디에 놓아 드릴까요?”
부드러운 음성으로 웃으며 말하는 직원. 그 덕분일까. 우리의 대화는 잠시 끊겼다.
“뭐. 어쨌든 내 말은…… 다들 윤성이 너 덕분에 잘되었으니까. 고마워한다는 게 핵심이야.”
“그건…….”
“자자. 이 이야기는 여기까지만 하고.”
데이빗 선배는 더 이상 이 이야기를 하지 않겠다는 듯 금세 말을 돌리셨다.
“학교 생활하면서 뭐 궁금한 점 같은 건 없어? 이래 보여도 나름 고학년이라 어지간한 건 다 말해 줄 수 있는데?”
본인이 이에 대해 더 말하기 싫다면, 굳이 그 이야길 꺼낼 생각이 없었다. 그렇기에 자연스럽게 나 또한 데이빗 선배의 질문에 대한 답을 했다.
“딱히 지금 생각나는 건 없는데요.”
에일대학교의 교풍은 꽤 자유로웠다. 그 예시가 나였다. 현재 난 학교생활과 작품 활동을 병행하고 있지 않은가.
그 때문에 당장 내 머리를 스치는 건 없었다. 그 결과 당연히 모범적인 답을 할 뿐이었다.
“아, 굳이 따지면…… 이왕 대학을 다니는 거 좀 더 알차게 학교생활을 하고 싶다는 정도?”
데이빗 선배는 이 학교를 나보다 먼저 다닌 사람이었다. 한 번이라도 이 길을 먼저 간 이에게 조언을 들어 보는 것도 좋으리라.
“지금 시점에서 학교 다닐 때, 하지 못해서 후회한 거나…… 뭐 이런 것 있어요?”
“당연히 있지. 없을 리가.”
“오. 혹시 뭔지 물어봐도 되나요?”
그야말로 기다렸다는 듯이 나온 대답이었다. 그로 인해 자연스럽게 내 호기심은 커졌다. 저렇게나 확실하게 아쉬운 점이 뭐란 말인가.
“해외에 못 나가 본 것. 그게 좀 아깝긴 하지.”
“예? 해외요?”
“응. 아무래도 대학생이 아니면 장기간 외국 생활 하기가 쉽진 않으니까.”
이런 점은 한국과 미국이 비슷했다. 어쩌면 미국이 더할 수도 있었다. 한국보다 고용이 자유로운 만큼 경력에 대해 훨씬 신경을 많이 써야 하니까.
“해외라…… 전 해당이 별로 없겠군요.”
“아니. 네 경우도 해당이 되지. 예를 들면…… 교환 학생 같은 거?”
교환 학생. 학교 간의 교류를 통해 학생들이 다른 학교에서 수업을 들어 볼 수 있게 하는 제도였다.
한국에서는 대학에 입학 전, 몇몇 같은 반 애들이 인생의 로망이라고 할 정도로 관심도가 높았다. 그걸 에일대학교 학생에게도 들을 줄이야.
“교환 학생이 있겠네요. 에일대도.”
“그냥 예시를 든 거야. 솔직히 미대 애들은 교환 학생을 많이 안 가는 편이긴 하거든.”
“왜요?”
“여기서 자기 작품 만들고 수업 따라가기도 워낙 바쁘니까.”
일리가 있었다. 미술 대학은 워낙 기본적으로 할 일이 많았다. 꾸준하게 작품을 만들기 위해서 들이는 시간이 만만치 않았으니까.
“그리고 여기가 최고인데, 굳이 다른데 안 가려고 하는 것도 있고.”
미국에 있는 에일대가 최고라고 당당히 말하는 모습. 그건 꽤 자부심이 넘쳐 보여, 어딘가 멋있는 느낌마저 들었다.
“근데 널 보니 한국에는 한번 가 보고 싶네.”
“한국이요?”
“응. 너 같은 화가가 대체 어떻게 나오게 되는지 궁금하거든.”
“……제가 뭘.”
“대체 어떤 나라의 어떤 환경이면 그런 그림을 그릴 수 있는지…… 신기하니까.”
“칭찬이 과하신데요.”
내 떨떠름한 어조에도 그는 오히려 호탕하게 웃었다.
“과하긴! 그 덕분에 우리가 1등도 했는데.”
그는 전혀 과하지 않다는 어조로 고개를 저었다. 그러더니 이내 줄줄이 본인의 아쉬움에 대해 토로하기 시작했다.
“물론 그 외에도 못 해 본 것에 대한 아쉬움은 많지.”
“그래요?”
“응. 먼저 길바닥에 퍼질 정도로 더 놀았어야 한다는 생각도 하고.”
“…….”
“한번쯤은 살이 녹을 만큼 불타는 사랑도 해 봤어야 하고.”
살이 녹을 만큼 불타는 사랑이라니. 그건 뭐 어떻게 하는 건지 짐작도 가지 않았다.
“교수님들에게 반항도 더 확실하게 해 봤어야 하는 건데!”
언중유골이라. 말속에 뼈가 들어 있었다. 진심이 한가득 담긴 그 말에 난 결국 웃음을 터뜨렸다.
“웃을 일이 아닌데? 너 이왕 학교 생활하는 거 너무 모범생처럼만 살지 말고 할 수 있는 건 다 해봐. 알겠어?”
그렇게 그날의 비싼 식사 자리는 데이빗 선배의 아쉬움에 대한 성토의 장으로 변했다.
물론 나 또한 건진 것이 있었으니.

사무국장이자 다음 휘트니 비엔날레의 총괄인 알비오는 고맙다는 말부터 입에 담았다.
긍정적인 협상의 기본은 좋은 관계였으니까.
“윤성 신 작가님께서 저희 휘트니 비엔날레에 관심을 가져 주셔서 기쁘기 그지없습니다.”
“오호. 그거 좋은 말씀이군요. 그럼 저희의 요구를 모두 들어주시는 겁니까?”
그가 오늘 만나기로 한 이들. 그들은 미국에서 가장 큰 갤러리 중 하나인 라고시안이었다.
라고시안이 어디인가. 미국에서 가장 유명한 작가들 중 절반쯤은 이 갤러리에 속해 있다고 해도 과언이 아닌 곳이었다.
그 정도의 힘을 가진 갤러리라면, 휘트니 입장에서도 잘못 보이고 싶지는 않았다.
그렇기에 일방적인 라고시안의 요청에도 이렇게 함께 회의까지 하고 있는 것 아니겠는가.

미국에서 라고시안의 영향력을 생각해 보면 당연한 일이었다. 그러나 문제가 몇몇 있었으니.

“물론 작가님께서 참가하신다면 저희야 영광이죠.”

“거기다 저희 작가님께서 참가하시면 질적인 측면과 양적인 측면이 모두 보완될 게 분명하지 않습니까.”
질적인 측면이야 윤성 신 작가의 그림으로 더할 수 있을 것이요. 양적인 측면도 그가 참가한다면 다른 작가들도 관심을 가질 테니, 늘릴 수 있을 게 분명하다는 소리였다.
사실 라고시안의 말은 일리가 있었다. 하지만 휘트니 비엔날레 측에서 걱정하는 부분은 따로 있었으니.
“실례지만 윤성 신 작가님께서는 한국 국적이시죠?”
“예. 당연히 그렇습니다.”
“그…… 원래 휘트니의 설립 취지 자체가 ‘미국에서 2년에서 3년 이상은 거주한 사람이라면 누구나 전시할 수 있는 기회를 주자’입니다.”
휘트니 여사가 처음 휘트니 미술관을 만들었을 때부터 이건 변함이 없었다. 그렇기에 휘트니 미술관에서도 늘 말한다.
미국에서 3년만 거주한 자라면 누구든지 전시를 환영한다고.
“하지만 윤성 신 작가는…… 제가 알기로는 미국에서 산 지 그리 오래 안 된 걸로 알거든요.”

알비오는 속으로 식은땀을 흘렸다. 당장에라도 자리에서 일어날 기세인 라고시안 측. 그들을 어떻게든 붙잡아야 했으니까.
“진짜 반대를 하시는 거면, 빨리 말씀해 주세요. 작가님께 말씀드려서 이다음이나 혹은 그 다다음에 하자고 해야 하니까요.”
“…….”
“저희는 ‘현’ 휘트니 비엔날레 집행부를 존중하니, 의견만 말씀해 주시면 됩니다.”
