157화 알고 보면 더 재미있는
교수님께서는 여전히 그림을 보고 계셨다. 눈이 그림을 향해 있는 것과는 달리, 입은 날 위한 설명을 계속 하고 계셨지만 말이다.
“아. 혹시나 모를까 봐 이야기해 주자면, 존 애덤스가 2대, 토마스 제퍼슨이 3대 대통령이라네.”
교수님께서는 내가 미국인이 아니란 걸 생각하신 듯 얼른 설명을 덧붙이셨다.
“많이 알지는 못하지만…… 이름은 들어 봤습니다.”
“뭐. 역사 시간도 아니니, 길게 설명할 건 없고. 이 둘이 정치적으로 라이벌이었다는 거만 알면 된다네.”
딱 그 정도로 알고 있었다. 한쪽은 연방주의자고 나머지는 그거에 반대했다고 했던가.
하나 덧붙이자면, 라이벌이었던 그들이지만, 나름대로 우정은 확실했던 모양이었다.
서로 서신을 교환하던 그들은 놀랍게도 같은 날 사망했다고 알고 있었으니까.
내가 두 사람에 대해 간단한 정보를 떠올리는 사이. 교수님께서는 그림의 한 곳을 손가락으로 가리키셨다.
“여기서 주목할 점은 이 발이거든.”
교수님의 손가락에 따라 나 또한 그림의 한 부분을 바라보았다. 두 사람의 발이 꽤나 가까운 거리에 붙어 있었다.
“발이요?”
발이 재미있는 부분이라니. 단순히 그림만 봐서는 왜 그렇게 이야기하시는지 알 수 없었다.
의문 어린 시선을 느끼신 듯 교수님께서는 친절한 스승답게 상세한 설명을 시작하셨다.
“그래. 이 그림이 언제 그려졌는지에 따라 존 트럼블이 어떤 사람인지 좀 달라지거든.”
“그게 무슨…….”
“이 작품은 같은 모양의 그림이 미국의 국회 의사당에도 하나 있다네. 무려 5m짜리지.”
5m면 하나의 작품으로는 거대한 크기였다. 여기 내 눈앞에 있는 그림은 절대 그 정도 크기가 아니었다. 아무리 봐도 가로가 1m가 넘지 않을 것 같았으니까.
그렇다는 건 이쪽이 아닌 그 5m짜리가 진짜일 가능성이 높다는 의미였다. 자연스럽게 이쪽은 그 작품을 그리기 전에 그렸던 습작이 되고 말이다.
내가 이에 관해 물어보기 전, 교수님께서는 그 거대한 그림에 대해 먼저 입을 여셨다.
“근데 재미있는 건 그 5m짜리 그림에는 토마스 제퍼슨이 존 애덤스의 발을 밟고 있다네.”
그 말에 난 다시 한 번 그림을 봤다. 아무리 봐도 발을 밟고 있는 것 같지 않았다. 오히려 떨어져 있다면 모를까.
“……여긴 떨어져 있는데요.”
“후후. 그러니 재미있다는 것이지.”
그제야 교수님께서는 고개를 돌려 나를 바라보셨다. 그림에서 시선을 뗀 리처드 교수님께서는 이 그림과 다른 곳에 있는 작품의 관계에 대해 말씀하셨다.
“여기 있는 작은 그림이 국회에 있는 대형 작품보다 나중에 그려진 것이면 존 트럼벌은 그냥 실수를 한 것이겠지만…….”
“……이 작품이 먼저 그린 습작이라면, 의도하고 그린 쪽일 수 있다는 거네요.”
“바로 그거라네. 무려 5미터짜리 대작에 그런 의도를 일부러 숨겨 둔 걸 수 있다는 소리지.”
내가 알기로 두 사람은 모두 미국인들에게 존경받는 위인들이었다. 그런 사람들을 대상으로 이런 장난을 치다니. 존 트럼벌도 재미있는 사람인 게 분명했다.
“미국에 대해 알고 이 그림을 보면 이런 재미있는 에피소드가 귀에 들어오지 않나?”
그건 그랬다. 만약 토마스 제퍼슨과 존 애덤스에 대해 모르는 사람이라면, 그 이야기를 듣고 아무런 재미를 느끼지 못했을 테니까.
그리고 교수님이 말씀하시고 싶은 핵심도 여기 있는 모양이었다.
“작품을 최대한 잘 이해하기 위해선…… 어느 정도 그 나라, 혹은 그 화가에 대해 알아야 한다네.”
“알고 있습니다.”
지극히 당연한 소리였다. 그 나라를 공부하고, 작가에 대해 아는 것. 이건 작품을 잘 이해하는 데 필요한 것이었다. 만약 문화에 대한 정보까지 습득해서 이해할 수 있다면, 보다 더 완벽해질 테고 말이다.
난 이걸 누구보다 피부로 느끼고 있었다. 이 시대의 많은 이들이 연구하고 노력한다고 해도 조선 후기의 작품에 대한 이해도는 날 따라오기 어려우리라.
난 그 시대를 직접 겪었고, 살아 본 장본인이었으니까. 보는 눈이 아예 다를 수밖에 없었다.
“그러니 난 우리의 윤성 작가님께서 유럽에는 꼭 가 봤으면 하네.”
윤성 작가님이라고 부르며 상당히 진지한 어조로 조언하시는 교수님이셨다.
“짧게 여행을 다녀오는 것도 좋지만…… 어차피 교환 학생에 대해 관심이 있다면 그걸로 다녀오는 게 더 좋을 거야.”
“그렇게 생각하세요?”
“그럼! 학부생으로서 그 나라에 가서 배워 보고 느껴 볼 수 있는 건 지금 이 시기만 가능할 테니까.”
일리가 있는 말씀이셨다. 여행을 다녀오는 것과 실제로 거기 살면서 학교를 다니는 건 아예 다른 경험일 게 분명하기에.
하물며 학부생으로서 배울 수 있는 건 지금 시기가 아니면 할 수 없는 일이었다.
“혹시 추천하는 곳이 있나요?”
이왕 여기까지 의견을 들은 것. 아예 나라들에 대한 정보까지 듣고 가고 싶었다. 교수님이라면 내게 괜찮은 곳을 말씀해 주실 것이란 믿음이 있었기에.
“후후. 최근까지 뉴욕은 현대 미술의 중심이라고 불렸지. 헌데, 최근 들어 그 아성을 위협하는 곳이 있는데…… 혹 들어본 적이 있나?”
“설마…….”
“그 설마가 맞을 걸세. 런던. 그 안개가 자욱한 도시를 한번 고려해 보는 걸 내 추천하지.”
런던. 영국에 있는 대도시인 그곳은 유럽으로 가게 될 경우, 내 우선순위 중 하나였다.
먼저 영어권인 만큼 언어적인 문제가 다른 데보다 없을 게 분명했다. 발음 등 약간의 차이가 있다고 해도 그게 완전 다른 언어는 아니었으니까.
그러나 내가 진짜 영국의 런던을 우선순위로 고려했던 이유. 그건 교수님의 말씀에도 일부 포함되어 있었다.
현대 미술의 중심부. 그걸 미국에서 영국으로 옮겨 왔다고 평가 받는 곳이 런던에 있었으니까.
‘교수님께서 이렇게나 이야기하실 정도라면…… 진짜 한 번 가 보는 것도 괜찮을 것 같은데.’
마음속에서 결심이 일어나는 게 느껴졌다. 내 생각과 교수님의 의견이 일치한다면, 그건 꽤나 좋은 선택지인 것이 분명했으니까.
‘알아보니 교환 학생을 할 수 있는 최고의 시기는 2학년 혹은 3학년이야.’
4학년이 되면 졸업 작품 준비부터 시작해 할 일이 순식간에 늘어났다. 만약 가기로 마음을 굳혔다면, 그나마 덜 바쁜 2학년이나 3학년 때, 가는 것이 좋으리라.
‘사실 아트 바젤 스위스를 생각하면, 유럽에 시기를 잘 맞춰 있는 것도 좋겠지.’
절대 아트 바젤 스위스를 포기할 수는 없었다. 다른 사람들에게 그림을 보여 주는 것에 있어선 난 욕심이 넘치다 못해 흘러내렸으니까. 그런 나에게 스위스에서 하는 아트 페어는 놓칠 수 없는 기회였다.
한정된 사람들만 보여 주는 것보다 최대한 많은 이들에게 작품을 선보이는 것. 그게 제일이라고 생각했으니까.
그래야 더 많은 이들이 내 그림을 가지고 싶다고 생각할 수 있을 것 아니겠는가.
‘역시나 애매할 때는 어른에게 물어보는 게 제일이네.’
고민하던 것의 일부가 해결되었다. 구체적인 시기나 방법 등은 차차 해 나가면 되는 문제였으니. 가장 큰 고민이 해결된 것이나 다름없었다.
그렇기에 난 가벼운 발걸음으로 남은 전시를 볼 수 있었다. 교수님에게 그림에 대한 소소한 뒷이야기들을 들으면서 말이다.

휘트니와 연락을 한다는 말을 끝으로 잠시 전화가 없던 필립. 드디어 그에게서 다시 통화가 왔다.
[휘트니에는 작품 기획서만 잘 제출하면 됩니다. 기획안만 잘하면 지원은 무제한에 가깝게 해 줄 것입니다.]기획안을 만드는 것도 라고시안이 도와줄 테니. 저 말의 의미는 내가 작품을 만들기 위해 무슨 짓을 해도 괜찮다는 뜻이었다.
지난번 베니스 비엔날레 때도 그랬지만, 보통 금액적인 부분에서 상한선이 있었다. 그게 일반적이었으니.
그걸 생각하면 이런 조건을 위해 라고시안이 상당히 노력했다는 것을 알 수 있었다.
‘과연 라고시안. 이번에도 일 좀 한 모양이네.’
잘도 이런 협상을 해 오는 라고시안을 보며 속으로 작게 감탄하는 사이, 필립의 말은 계속되었다.
[총괄 큐레이터가 주제를 정하면, 그다음에는 각 층의 담당 큐레이터들이 움직일 겁니다.]“역시나 그런 방식이군요.”
[예. 일단은 그렇습니다. 그래서 말인데요. 작가님과 함께 일할 큐레이터가 조만간 회의를 하자고 할 것 같은데…… 어찌 답해 드려야 할까요?““그럼 제가 뉴욕으로 가야 하는 거죠?”
이미 한 번 방문해서 아는 그 휘트니 전시관은 뉴욕의 한복판에 있었다. 맨하튼에 위치하고 있었으니까.
다행스럽게도 에일대학교는 뉴욕과 그리 멀리 떨어져 있지 않았다. 그렇기에 뉴욕을 간다 해도 상관없었다.
미국의 땅 덩어리는 우리나라에 비할 바가 아니었다. 뉴욕에서 많이 떨어져 있는 LA같은 데 있었다간, 오고 가는 데 힘들었을 것이다.
“토요일이 좋을 것 같아요. 수업이 없는 날이거든요. 주말이기도 하고요.”
지난번 클리프와 다이애나와 함께 미술관을 보러 간 날도 토요일이었다.
한번 토요일에 움직여 봤기 때문일까. 난 다시 한번 더 그 요일에 맞춰 가겠다고 약속할 수 있었다.
[그럼 그건 그렇게 전달해 드리겠습니다…… 그런데요. 작가님.]“네. 말씀하세요.”
[아마…… 미리부터 좀 각오를 하셔야 할 수도 있습니다.]잠시 머뭇거리던 필립은 진지한 어조로 말을 이었다. 문제는 그 의견이 언뜻 들어선 이해할 수 없다는 것에 있었다.
“각오요? 무슨 각오요?”
[작가님과 함께 일할 담당 큐레이터가 좀…… 경력이 부족한 듯 보여서요.]큐레이터가 젊은 모양이었다. 필립의 눈에 경력이 부족하다면 그리 오래 일한 큐레이터는 아닌 듯 보였으니.
“그래요? 근데 그게 무슨…… 문제라도 있는 거예요?”
경력이 부족하다고 해서 실력이 부족한 게 아닐 수 있었기에. 큐레이터의 경력이 왜 문제가 되는지 알 수 없었다.
어차피 그림을 그리는 것도 작가요. 다른 작품을 만드는 것도 해당 작가일 텐데 말이다.
그러나 필립이 걱정한 부분은 내 예상과 미묘하게 달랐다.
[큐레이터의 경력이 애매할 경우 생길 수 있는 문제 중 가장 큰 건…… 작가들 간의 조율 문제입니다.]“조율이요?”
[예. 아무래도 여럿이 하나의 주제에 맞춰 전시하는 만큼, 작가들 간에 문제가 안 발생할 수가 없거든요.]그 말에 난 내 기억을 떠올렸다. 과거 베니스 비엔날레에서 한 경험들을 말이다.
“베니스 비엔날레 때는 그런 문제가 없었는데요.”
[거긴 국가관에 따라 전시하니까요. 이미 국가관 별로 정해진 규모가 있다 보니, 그런 문제가 거의 발생하지 않죠.]해당 국가는 정해진 국가관에서만 전시를 했다. 그렇기에 작가들 간의 공간적인 문제가 발생하기 어려웠다.
‘거기다 난 같이하는 선생님도 좋은 분이셨으니까.’
박현민 선생님과는 지금까지도 인연을 이어 갈 정도로 잘 맞았다. 그때는 몰랐지만, 이제 와서 생각해 보면 당시 난 운이 좋았다.
“……휘트니는 다르겠네요.”
[예. 휘트니 전시관이라는 하나의 장소에서 공간을 나눠 쓰는 형태로 전시하다 보니, 작가들 사이에서 그런 문제가 발생할 수 있습니다.]실제로 예전 휘트니 비엔날레에서 그런 문제가 불거져 나왔다고 했다. 필립은 내게 몇몇 사건의 예시를 들며 설명을 더했다.
[예전에 A 작가가 쓰려던 공간을 B 작가가 침범해서 비엔날레 관람 동선이 심각하게 꼬인 적이 있습니다.]관람객에게 그 피해가 갔다니. 그건 확실히 문제가 될만했다.
[한때는 전시하는 곳 중 몇몇이 너무 비어 보인다며 비난을 받은 적이 있는데, 알고 보니 그거도 큐레이터가 공간 조율을 못 한 것이더군요.]필립의 말에 따르면, 내 예상보다 여러 번 문제가 발생했다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 그의 말마따나 큐레이터의 경험이 부족해서 발생한 것이리라.
작가들이 만들어 내는 작품들의 크기부터 시작해 그걸 어울리도록 배치하는 일까지. 그 일들을 모두 큐레이터가 하는 것이었으니까.
그러나 들으면 들을수록 난 그다지 큰 걱정이 들지 않았다.
작품들과의 조화. 그리고 공간 배치의 문제. 물론 중요했다.
하지만 이보다 더 중요한 걸 난 잡을 생각이었기에.
“으흠. 만약 그런 문제라면…… 전 괜찮을 것 같은데요?”
[……예? 괜찮다니요?]“어차피 중요한 건 작품이에요. 사람들을 푹 빠뜨리게 만든 작품이라면, 그런 사소한 사항은 아무런 문제가 되질 않죠.”
사실이 그랬다. 실제로 전시관이 바뀐다고 해서 명작이 망작이 되는 건 아니었으니까.
작게 튀어나올 수 있는 사소한 문제 정도야 작품만 좋으면 생각조차 안 나는 법이었으니.
“그리고 혹시 또 알아요? 제 강점 중 하나 때문에 별다른 문제가 없을 수도 있으니까요.”
[작가님의 강점이면…….]내 스스로는 강점이라고 생각하지만, 그걸 입 밖으로 내는 건 또 다른 문제였기에. 난 대답을 하는 대신 말을 돌렸다.
“뭐. 지금부터 이렇게 말해도 아무런 소용이 없으니, 일단 큐레이터분을 만나보는 게 중요하겠네요. 경력이 짧아도 휘트니 비엔날레의 큐레이터가 되신 거면, 실력이 엄청 뛰어나실 수도 있는 거니까요.”
이쪽도 충분히 가능성이 있었다. 젊은 큐레이터가 뛰어나다면, 우리의 걱정은 괜한 기우일 것이기에.
결과는 조만간 알 수 있으리라. 다음번 뉴욕행. 그게 멀지 않은 듯 보였으니까.
