모리엔은 시간을 다시 한번 확인했다. 무려 윤성 신 작가님과의 약속이었으니, 몇 번을 확인해도 모자랐다.
‘지금 시간은 오후 3시…… 2시간 남았으니 딱 좋네.’
그녀가 신 작가님을 라고시안 관계자와 만나기로 한 시간은 오후 5시였다. 간단한 회의를 하며 저녁 식사를 함께하기로 한 것이었으니까.
남은 2시간, 그녀는 오늘 여기 온 김에 라고시안 갤러리의 작품들을 볼 생각이었다.
원래부터 작품을 좋아하는 점. 그게 그녀가 큐레이터 생활을 하게 된 결정적인 계기였으니까.
‘어디 보자.’
보통 사람들이 착각하는 게 하나있다. 전문가인 큐레이터는 그림만 척척 볼 것이라는 말도 안 되는 착각.
그러나 큐레이터일수록 갤러리들이 제공하는 정보의 보고인 팸플릿 같은 걸 많이 본다.
작품이 뭐가 있는지에 대한 기본 정보부터 시작해, 현재 그 갤러리가 미는 작품의 강점 같은 것도 파악할 수 있으니까.

찬찬히 읽어 보던 그녀는 눈을 비볐다. 예상치도 못했던 작품을 봤기 때문이었으니.
‘윤성 신 작가님의 신작이 나왔었단 말이야?’
이건 그녀 스스로가 생각하기에는 직무 유기나 다름없었다. 우리의 윤성 작가님의 새로운 작품이 세상에 나왔는데 모르고 있었다니!

그녀는 얼른 그 작품을 보고 싶은 마음이 들었다. 자연스럽게 서둘러 발걸음을 옮겨 전시장으로 향했다.
원래 맛있는 건 제일 늦게 먹는 게 그녀의 습관이었다. 그렇기에 그녀는 일부러 윤성 신 작가님의 작품을 가장 마지막의 마지막에 보기 위해 움직였다.
그리고 드디어 그 작품을 보고야 말았다.

그런데 안타깝게도 그 옆에 있는 한자나 한글은 그녀가 읽을 수가 없었다.

그녀는 재빠르게 다시 들고 있는 팜플렛을 살펴보았다.

등 뒤에서 들린 나지막한 목소리. 그에 그녀는 뒤를 돌아보았다.
거기에 있는 건 웬 잘생긴 동양인 청년이었다. 청년이라고 하기엔 꽤나 어려 보이는 외모였지만, 어쩐지 그 분위기가 어른스러웠기에 청년이라고 불러도 이상하지 않았다.
고등학생쯤 되어 보이는 그 청년은 그녀와 눈이 마주치자 곧바로 사과부터 건냈다.
“갑자기 말을 걸어 죄송합니다. 작품명을 궁금해하시는 것 같아서요.”
모리엔이 돌아보자 상대는 민망한 듯이 살짝 고개를 숙이는 게 보였다. 동양인들은 예의 바르다고 하던데, 이 청년도 그런 성격인 게 보였다.
‘잠깐만. 방금 뭐라고 했지?’
하지만 그녀에게는 눈앞에 있는 상대의 외향이나 예의범절보다 더 중요한 게 있었다.
“지금…… 이거 작품명 말씀하신 거죠?”
“예. 그렇습니다만…….”
“다시 말해 주세요! 제가 방금 잘 못 들어서요.”
그녀의 눈빛이 강렬했던 모양이었다. 상대방이 자기도 모르게 한 발자국 물러나는 게 보였다.
물론 그러면서도 착실하게 대답해 주는 것이, 상당히 예의 바른 청년이었다.
“아, ‘주면야독’이라고 합니다. 여기 적혀 있는 걸 그대로 읽으면요.”
이름 모를 그가 가리키는 건 동글동글한 글씨가 귀여운 한글이었다. 그의 한국어 발음이 능숙한 게 아무것도 모르는 그녀의 귀에도 느껴졌다.
“한국어 하실 줄 아세요?”
“네. 할 줄 압니다.”
“그래서 이걸 그렇게 읽으실 수 있는 거군요…… 많이 어렵죠? 한국어.”
“글쎄요. 전 모국어라 어렵다고 느끼진 않아서요.”
동양인이라고만 생각했는데, 상대방은 뜻밖에도 한국인이었던 모양이었다.
‘윤성 신 작가님과 같은 국적을 가진 사람이구나.’
이상할 건 없었다. 뉴욕은 국제적인 경제 도시기도 했지만, 동시에 관광 도시기도 했다. 그리고 한국인은 뉴욕을 방문하는 관광객들 중 꽤나 많은 편에 속해 있었다.

라고시안 갤러리는 사립 미술관 중에선 가장 괜찮은 전시를 하는 곳이었다. 눈앞의 청년이 미술에 관심이 많은 이라면, 여기에 와서 관람해도 이상할 건 전혀 없었다.
“모국어면 어려운지 쉬운지 잘 모르시겠네요.”

뒤에 있던 청년이 어느새 그림 앞까지 다가와 있었다. 그녀의 말에 볼을 긁적거리며 작품을 바라보는 상대방이었다.
‘역시 미술에 관심이 많은 사람이라면, 윤성 신 작가님의 작품을 몰라볼 수가 없지!’

그건 몰랐다. 한국인들이 쓰는 언어가 그렇게 만들어졌을 줄은. 그렇다면 그녀 또한 한국어를 배워 보는 것도 좋겠다는 생각이 들었다.
“열심히 배운다는 가정하에 한자보단 한글이 읽기 쉬울 듯 하네요.”
“그럼 역시 읽기 정도는 배워 두는 게 좋을 것 같네요. 그럼 이 작가님 작품을 제대로 읽을 수 있을 텐데.”
그녀의 솔직한 심정이었다. 물론 요즘 시대는 번역기가 너무 잘되어 있어 이런 단어 정도야 금방 알 수 있었다.
하지만 아무리 번역기가 발달해도 직접 그 언어를 할 수 있는 것만은 못했다. 직접 그 언어를 알기에 느낄 수 있는 감성이 있지 않은가.

일반 사람들이 보기에는 무척이나 비슷해 보이는 두 직업. 그러나 하는 일은 확연하게 달랐다.

모리엔은 우선 상대방이 이 작가님에 대해 얼마나 아는지부터 물었다. 눈빛이 흔들리던 청년은 애매모호한 기색으로 말문을 열었다.

정말로 그 작가에 대해 하나도 모른다면 아예 모른다고 답했으리라.
그런데 저렇게 이야기한다는 것은 어느 정도는 윤성 작가님에 대한 지식이 있다는 것이었다.
“이 작가님은 한국인이세요. 아직 나이가 무척 어리시지만, 작품 자체는 굉장히 개성이 있으시죠.”
“개성이요…….”
개성을 입에 담는 청년의 말투가 어쩐지 떨떠름했다. 그녀는 이 청년에게 윤성 신 작가님의 작품이 가진 매력을 더 보여 주고 싶었다.

일단 관심을 보이는 건 확실하니. 좀만 더 그림 자체의 매력을 알려 주면, 그녀와 같은 작가님의 팬이 될 수 있을 것이 분명했기에.
“예. 특히나 수채화로 그리는 유화풍의 작품은 이 작가님이 아니면 거의 그리는 사람이 없어요.”
“아…… 그래요?”
“당연하죠! 애초에 수채화 자체가 다루기 보통 어려운 물감이 아닌걸요! 유화처럼 막 덧칠할 수 있는 것도 아니니까요.”
“……아하.”
“그렇다고 윤성 신 작가님께서 유화를 못 그리시는 것도 아니에요. 그건 이 작품에도 잘 드러나 있죠. 혹시 어느 부분인지 알 것 같으세요?”
원래 사람들의 흥미를 끌기 위해선 공감이 중요했다. 당연히 무작정 설명만 하는 건 하수 중의 하수였다.
이렇게 직접 생각할 수 있도록 흥미로운 질문을 더해 주는 게 베스트였다.
그래야 좀 더 관심을 가지고 그림을 살펴볼 것이 분명했으니까.
“……여기 노트북 앞에 앉아 있는 사람이겠죠.”
“정답입니다! 당신 이제 보니까, 눈썰미가 좋네요.”
다행히도 청년은 그녀의 요구에 완벽하게 부합했다. 갑작스러운 질문에도 정확한 답을 찾아낸 것을 보면 말이다.
‘일반 사람이 바로 알아보다니, 작품 보는 눈이 틔어 있네.’
눈이 이 정도로 좋다면, 어쩌면 아주 일반인은 아닐 수도 있었다.
‘동양인, 그것도 한국인에 라고시안 갤러리까지 올 사람이면…… 설마?’
그녀는 재빠르게 해당 청년을 다시 위아래로 살펴보았다.
