16화 사진보다 더 현실 같은 그림
윤성이의 말에 순식간에 사방이 조용해졌다. 기묘할 정도로 아이답지 않은 박력이 가득했기에.
무릎을 꿇고 반듯하게 앉아서 묻는 아이의 기세는 비장했다. 덕분에 다들 잠시 말문이 막혔다.
먼저 정신을 차린 가영. 그녀는 어머니로서 이 사태를 해결하려고 했다.
“윤성아. 일단 자리에서 일어나서…….”
하지만 그녀의 말이 끝나기 전, 민철의 입이 열렸다.
“갑자기 그런 이야기를 하는 이유가 있는 게냐?”
“아빠, 지금 애가 하는 소리를 듣고 무슨…….”
“예, 있습니다. 할아버지.”
두 사람만의 세계를 본 가영은 결국 입을 다물었다. 지금은 그녀가 끼어들 자리가 아닌 듯 보인 모양이었다.
‘소손이라고 말하는 아기라…….’
민철은 턱을 쓰다듬었다. 아이가 무슨 소리를 하는지 살펴보기로 했다.
그의 손자가 가끔 저런 말투를 쓸 때는 참 신기한 말을 했으니까.
‘어디 한번 들어나 보자.’
민철은 일부러 헛기침을 했다. 걱정스럽게 이쪽을 보고 있는 딸아이를 한 번 바라봐 준 그는 손자를 향해 입을 열었다.
능청스러운 어투였다.
“크흠. 아직 윤성이가 어려서 잘 모르나 본데. 할아버지는 좀 바쁘단다.”
시작부터 거절의 의미를 담았음에도 아이의 표정은 변함이 없었다. 똑똑한 아이라 충분히 어떤 의미인지 알 텐데도.
“단순히 그림을 배우고 싶은 거라면, 다른 방법이 많이 있어.”
“다른 방법이요.”
“그래. 예를 들면…… 요즘은 그 학원이나 과외 같은 것도 괜찮다고 하더구나.”
간단히 말해 본인은 하기 어렵다는 소리였다. 민철은 일부러 속마음과 완전히 다른 말을 하며 아이의 반응을 살폈다.
“학원이나 과외가 뭔지, 소손 이미 잘 알고 있습니다. 그림을 그리는 기술을 배울 수 있다는 걸요.”
“오, 그러냐.”
역시나 똑똑한 손주는 이미 어른 못지않게 의사소통이 확실했다. 심지어 아이의 말은 거기서 끝나지 않았다.
“분명 거기선 이 시대에 나온 여러 가지 그림을 기법을 알려 주겠지요.”
이 시대라니. 어린아이가 쓰기엔 기묘한 말투였다.
그러나 아이의 표정이 워낙 진지했기에 다들 이에 대해 지적하지 못했다.
윤성이는 반듯하게 앉은 자세를 흐트러트리지 않았다. 마치 오래전부터 그렇게 앉는 것이 익숙하다는 듯이. 한 치의 흐트러짐 없이도 아이는 곧잘 말했다.
“그것도 좋지만……. 지금 제게 필요한 건 다른 이의 작업을 보는 것입니다.”
손자의 이야기에 민철은 멈칫했다. 그만큼 윤성이의 말에는 특이한 부분이 있었다.
“단순히 남이 그리는 것을 지켜보는 것만으로 충분하다고?”
“예. 그림에 정답은 없으니까요.”
귀여운 얼굴과 앳된 목소리. 그러나 그 안에 깃든 의지는 어딘가 굳센 면이 있었다.
장난스럽게 시작한 민철의 마음까지 진지하게 바꿔 놓을 정도로 말이다. 그는 턱을 쓰다듬으며 말끝을 흐렸다.
“정답이 없다라…….”
“예. 개개인이 느끼고 깨닫는 모든 것이 정답이니까요.”
손자의 말들을 듣다 보면 자연스럽게 드는 생각. 그건 그가 팔불출이기 때문이 아니었다.
‘이 나이에 이런 생각을 하다니. 이 아이…… 진짜 천재인가?’
오랜 세월 이 계통에 있었던 민철이었다. 그렇기에 그는 이 분야에서 재능이란 것이 어떤 걸 말하는지 잘 알고 있었다.
하지만 사람들이 말하는 재능. 그건 실제론 아주 미세한 차이에 불과했다. 그가 본 대다수의 재능은 고작 그 정도에 불과했다.
그렇기에 그의 눈에 들어오는 천재는 세상에 존재하지 않았다. 그 정도의 차이를 가지고 하늘이 내린 재능이라고 말하는 건 어불성설이었기에.
그러나 오늘 그는 처음으로 천재에 대해 진지하게 생각하기에 이르렀다.
어쩌면 그의 핏줄에서 나온 것인지도 모른다. 사람들이 진짜처럼 여기는 환상 속의 그런 천재가.
잠시 생각을 하던 그는 결국 입을 열었다.
“단순히 날 보는…… 그거로 충분하다고?”
“네. 제가 얻을 수 있는 건 거기서 얻어 보겠습니다.”
자신만만한 말이었다. 손자의 의견을 들은 민철은 가만히 아이를 바라보았다.
“…….”
상당히 긴 침묵이 흘렀다. 일반적인 아이라면 꽤 부담스러워할 만한 시간이었다.
마침내 그는 손자의 손을 들어 줄 수밖에 없었다. 그 또한 할아버지였으니까.
“좋아. 그럼 이 할애비랑 같이 그림 그려 보자.”
“감사합니다!”
“내일부터 윤성이는 언제든 이 할애비 작업실에 들어와도 좋다.”
심지어 파격적인 결정까지 뒤따랐다.
“아빠, 윤성이가 혹시 들어갔다가 아빠의 작품이라도 망가트리면…….”
그 갑작스러운 결정에 가영은 걱정이 되는 모양이었다. 그녀는 민철을 말리기 시작했다.
“함부로 다른 사람을 못 들어오게 하던 작업실 아니셨어요?”
“그렇긴 했지.”
“그런 곳에 갑자기 윤성이가 들어가도 된다고 말씀하시다니요.”
“괜찮다. 윤성이의 태도를 보면 알아.”
민철은 걱정하는 가영을 보며 미소를 지었다. 딸아이를 안심시키기 위함이었다.
“얘는 남의 작품에 함부로 손을 댈 아이가 아니야.”
“당연하죠, 어머니. 너무 걱정하지 마십시오. 잘하도록 하겠습니다.”
“아하하하하하. 봤지? 걱정할 필요 없을 게야.”
똑 부러지는 말에 민철은 큰 웃음을 터트렸다.
아이와 할아버지는 서로 마주 보며 미소를 지었다. 그런 두 사람은 어딘가 닮은 구석이 있었다.
이를 본 가영은 결국 두 사람의 말에 따를 수밖에.
“윤성아, 절대 그 안에서는 함부로 행동하면 안 된다. 알지?”
“네! 아…… 저 그런 의미에서 지금 당장 들어가 봐도 되나요?”
“그럼.”
슬쩍 할아버지 눈치를 보는 윤성이였다. 그런 손자를 위해 민철은 흔쾌히 함께 작업실로 향하기로 마음먹었다.

어지간한 건 대부분 허락받기 쉬웠던 부모님. 그런 부모님조차도 이 자리는 함부로 들어가지 못하게 했다.
그만큼 할아버지의 작업실은 내겐 익숙하지 않은 공간이었으니.
‘이렇게 자세히 보니 진짜 좋다.’
감탄이 절로 터져 나왔다. 누군가의 통제 안에서 보던 것과 달리 이 안은 내게 최고의 공간으로 보였으니까.
“앞으로 윤성이는 여기서 그림을 그리면 되겠다.”
“엄청 마음에 드는 자리네요. 감사합니다!”
할아버지의 말에 난 냉큼 대답했다.
‘요즘은 이런 곳에서 그림을 그리는구나.’
확실히 예전과 달라졌다.
내게 익숙한 붓부터 시작해 캔버스라고 불리는 물건들까지. 할아버지의 방에는 어지간한 것들이 전부 다 있었다.
하지만 익숙한 물건들 속에서도 그렇지 않은 것이 있었으니. 난 당연히 질문을 던질 수밖에.
“이건 뭔가요?”
“이건 이 할아버지가 연습 삼아 작업하고 있는 거다.”
할아버지가 그린 그림은 마치 사진처럼 선명했다. 어찌나 현실적인지 난 가까이서 보고서야 이것이 그림이라는 걸 알아차릴 수 있었으니까.
수많은 영상을 이미 섭렵한 나다. 과거의 기억에서 난 이걸 부르는 단어를 찾아낼 수 있었다.
“이런걸 극사실주의라고 하겠군요.”
“오. 윤성이가 하이퍼 리얼리즘에 대해서도 아는구나.”
기특하다는 듯 웃는 할아버지. 하지만 난 고개를 저었다. 내가 아는 건 그야말로 수박 겉 핥기에 불과할 테니까.
“잘 알지는 못해요.”
“그래?”
“예, 사진기를 보고 저도 떠올린 방법이었거든요.”
이전 생에서는 감히 상상하지 못했다. 당연했다. 내가 있던 조선에서는 사진이라는 물건이 없었으니까.
그러나 마치 현실을 빼다 박은 것처럼 옮겨 놓은 사진을 보는 순간. 나 또한 떠올리고 말았다.
이보다 더 선명한 그림. 사진보다 더 현실 같은 그림들을 그려 보면 어떨지 말이다.
‘그런데 이미 다른 이들이 먼저 그리고 있었지.’
덕분에 배운 점도 있었다.
결국 그림에는 화가의 뜻이 담긴다는 걸. 아무리 기계같이 묘사해도 끝내 그림은 그리는 화가의 마음이 담긴다.
“할아버지도 가끔은 이런 걸 해 보고 싶어지더구나.”
할아버지의 말씀을 들으며 난 그림을 좀 더 자세히 살폈다. 뚫어져라 바라보며 질문하는 건 덤이었다.
“할아버지. 이거 유화로 그리신 건가요?”
“유화도 포함되어 있지.”
“그 소린 다른 종류의 물감도 사용하셨다는 거군요.”
“흘흘. 그렇단다.”
할아버지의 웃음소리를 들으며 난 그림을 손으로 만져 보았다. 도구의 발전은 더 다양한 작품을 그릴 수 있게 만들고 있었다.
‘전생에서는 이런 그림은 상상도 못 했는데.’
지금 세계는 내가 감히 머릿속으로 그려 보지 못한 것들이 현실이 되어 있었다. 그렇기에 난 지금이 더 즐거웠다.
한정된 물감과 다양하지 못했던 붓들. 그랬던 과거와 달리 지금은 물감도 다양했으며, 도구는 무궁무진했다.
그만큼 더 아름다운 그림을 그려 낼 수 있으리라.
“으흠. 윤성이가 제일 먼저 관심을 가지는 게 이쪽인 게 신기하구나.”
“그래요?”
“평소 네가 그리는 스타일을 보면 동양화나 수묵화 쪽에 제일 흥미 있어 할 줄 알았거든.”
언뜻 들으면 일리가 있는 말이었다. 내가 할아버지나 부모님 앞에서 그린 그림의 형식. 그건 오늘날 동양화로 불리는 방식이었으니까.
그러나 정확하게는 그쪽이 내게 가장 익숙한 것뿐이었다.
난 아름답다고 할 법한, 다른 사람들의 눈을 사로잡을 수 있는 그림이라면 뭐든 관심이 있었다.
“지금도 제일 좋아합니다.”
“그러니?”
“예, 그런데 이쪽도 멋진 것 같아요.”
다시 태어나 보니 내가 모르던 세계는 넓었다. 그렇다면 그 모든 것을 한 번씩은 맛을 봐야 하지 않겠는가.
“할아버지가 말씀하신 대로 그쪽을 제일 좋아하는 게 맞지만, 전 다른 부분도 알고 싶은걸요.”
“그래?”
“예. 많이 알아야…… 진정으로 제가 표현할 수 있는 그림을 그릴 수 있으니까요.”
내 말을 들은 할아버지는 머리를 쓰다듬어 주셨다. 그 손길이 참으로 좋았다.
“그럼 이 할아버지랑 극사실주의 그림들부터 그려 볼까?”
“네!”
할아버지의 물음에 난 힘차게 대답했다. 내가 원하는 바였으니까.
