164화 그림에서도 표현할 수 있다
필사적으로 머리를 굴렸다. 그런 내게 떠오른 기억은 단 하나뿐이었으니.
“……뭔가 열심히 허공에 그린 기억은 있네요.”
지금 생각해 보면 도대체 뭘 그렇게 그려 대었는지 모르겠다. 기억은 나지 않지만 분명 뭔가 그리긴 한 것 같은데.
떨떠름한 내 말을 들은 필립은 큰 소리로 웃음을 터트렸다. 수화기 너머에서도 필립이 얼마나 크게 웃는지 다 느껴질 정도였다.
[아하하하. 그럼 다 기억하고 계신 겁니다. 그냥…… 화가다우셨습니다. 큽.]호쾌하게 웃는 필립을 보며 난 한숨을 내쉬었다.
‘에효. 나갈 준비나 하자.’
호텔에서의 아침은 할 일이 많았다. 씻고 나가기 위해 본격적인 행동을 해야 했으니까.
달그락거리는 소리 때문일까. 필립은 내가 뭘 하고 있는지 대충 눈치챈 기색이었다.
[그럼 지금 아침 식사하러 가시는 겁니까?]“예. 이제 일어나서 대충 준비했거든요.”
[아하하. 거기 아침 맛있죠. 종류도 다양하고요.]들어서 이미 알고 있었다. 최고급 숙소답게 조식이 훌륭하다고 하니, 꼭 먹어 볼 생각이었다.
‘맛있는 음식은 중요하지. 암, 중요하고 말고.’
혀를 즐겁게 하는 수많은 음식들. 미각이 주는 이 다양한 즐거움은 내가 다시 태어난 걸 늘 감사하게 만드는 감정 중 하나였다.
잠시 아침 식사에 대해 말하던 필립. 그는 그제야 꽤나 이른 아침부터 몇 건의 메시지와 부재중 통화를 남긴 이유를 꺼냈다.
[실은 어제 작가님께서 약간…… 취하시는 바람에 마무리가 좀 안 된 부분이 있습니다만.]“……콜록.”
아직 아침은 먹지도 않았는데 사레가 들릴 뻔했다. 순간적으로 할 말이 없어 기침이 나올 정도였기에.
술을 마시는 바람에 끝내지 못한 일이 있다니. 나답지 않은 일이었다.
‘어…… 사과해야 하나?’
하지만 고민이 무색하게도 필립이 말하는 요지는 그것이 아니었다. 다행스럽게도 그는 전날 밤의 추태를 지적하지 않았다.
[그래서 말입니다만, 작가님. 오늘 오후에 돌아가도 되는 거 맞으시죠? 오전이 아니라요?]“예. 진짜 천만다행히도 오늘이 일요일이네요.”
수업이 없는 날이었기에 느긋하게 에일대로 돌아가도 괜찮았다. 그런 내 일정을 알고 있는 필립은 나에게 한 가지 제안했다.
[그럼 체크아웃하시고 저희 사무실에 한 번 더 와 주실 수 있으실까요?]“사무실에요?”
[예. 전화로 하긴 좀 길어질 것 같아서요. 이왕 뉴욕까지 오시기도 했으니…….]“아, 마무리가 부족하다고 그랬죠?”
다시 사무실까지 와 달라고 하다니. 정말로 내가 술에 취하는 바람에 어제 못한 게 있는 듯했다.
[그것도 그렇긴 한데…… 좀 논의할 일이 추가로 생기기도 했거든요. 아하하하.]“뭔가 더 생긴 거에요?”
어째 말하는 어투가 휘트니 비엔날레가 아닌 것처럼 느껴졌다.
아니나 다를까 그의 입에서 나온 말은 내가 예상치 못한 것이었다.
[예. 작가님의 모국이신 한국, 거기서 연락이 와서 말입니다.]“한국이요? 한국 어디서요?”
어디서 왔길래 따로 만남까지 요청하는지 모르겠다.
스마트폰과의 아트 콜라보가 성공했기 때문일까. 주기적으로 기업들은 내게 아트 콜라보에 대한 의뢰를 넣고 있었다.
이거다! 싶은 것이 없어서 내가 하지 않는 것일 뿐.
지금 내 흥미가 그림에 있다는 것을 잘 알고 있는 라고시안. 그렇기에 필립은 어지간한 대기업에서 온 연락들은 간단하게 메일로 전달해 주었다.
그러니 휘트니 비엔날레 정도가 아니면 따로 만나서 할 이야기는 없었다. 하지만 이런 내 예상은 빗나갔다.
[후후. 국립 현대 미술관에서 드디어 작가님에게 연락이 왔습니다.]국립 현대 미술관. 한국에서 가장 큰 미술관인 동시에 가장 영향력 있는 곳에서 내게 연락이 왔다는 소리였기에.
“국립 현대 미술관이요?”
한국이라는 지금의 내 나라가 국가적인 차원에서 현대 미술을 위해 만든 국립 미술관. 그게 국립 현대 미술관이었다.
여긴 이 시대의 한국을 대표한다고 해도 과언이 아닐 정도로 다양한 근현대 미술품들을 보유 중이었다.
한 대기업의 회장님이 수집품들을 잔뜩 기증하면서 그야말로 세계적인 미술관이 되었다고 할 정도로 최근에도 화제였다. 과거에도 대단했지만, 최근에는 더 대단해진 곳이란 의미였다.
“거기서 절 왜 불렀는데요? 거긴 이미 가지고 있는 작품들로 전시하지 않아요?”
그 때문일까. 무료인 상설 전시의 경우 대부분 현재 국립 현대 미술관이 소유한 작품들만을 가지고 했다.
피카소, 모네와 같은 서양화가들을 비롯해 이중섭의 작품들까지. 이미 소장하고 있는 작품들로만 전시회를 해도 전혀 무리가 없었으니까.
‘솔직히 베니스 비엔날레에서 황금 사자상을 수상했을 때도 안 부른 곳인데…… 이제 와서 부른다고?’
조선에서부터 관은 나와 안 맞았다. 어쩔 수 없었다. 그 시대에서 가장 보수적인 곳. 그게 바로 관이었으니까.
지금도 마찬가지였다. 현대 미술을 다룬다고 해도 국립 현대 미술관은 이미 검증되고 안전한 것들을 위주로 선택하곤 했다. 나 같은 위험천만한 작가가 아니라.
[이미 돌아가신 분들의 작품을 주로 전시하긴 하죠. 그게 안전하기도 하고, 관심도도 더 높으니까요.]뜻밖이라는 내 생각이 말투에서 드러났기 때문일까. 필립은 이해한다는 어조로 입을 열었다.
[그런데 최근 거기 윗선의 관심도가 좀 올라간 모양입니다. 아무래도 해외 미술 시장이 점차 커지고 있으니까요.]“아하.”
[거기다 ‘올해의 작가상’ 문제도 있고요.]“‘올해의 작가상’이요?”
그건 또 뭐라는 말인가.
[아, 작가님 혹시 들어 보신 적이 없으세요?]“음…… 제가 아직 모르는 게 많네요. 죄송합니다.”
이 시대에 다시 태어나 공부했다 해도 난 아직 부족한 부분이 많았다. 종종 이런 식으로 다른 사람은 아는 걸 모르는 경우가 왕왕 있었다.
그러나 이번은 그게 아닌 모양이었다.
[아뇨. 죄송할 건 전혀 없습니다. 사실 그게 현실이거든요.]“현실이라고 하면…….”
[일단 간단하게 설명부터 드려야겠군요. ‘올해의 작가상’은 한국의 순수 예술계에서 사실상 가장 권위 있다고 불리고 있는 상입니다.]이 말만 가지고도 그 상이 어떤 건지 대충 짐작은 가능했다. 그러나 듣다 보니 좀 이상한 부분이 있었다.
“가장 권위가 있으면 있는 거지, 그렇게 불리는 상이란 건 뭐에요?”
[큽. 역시 작가님. 정확하게 짚어 내셨군요.]필립은 이상함을 눈치챈 내가 재미있다는 듯 웃음기가 있는 목소리를 들려줬다.
[한국의 순수 예술계에서 한 축을 담당하고 계신 작가님께서 모를 정도로…… 이 상은 그다지 관심을 못 받고 있는 게 현실이란 거죠. ‘올해의 작가상’이라는 거창한 이름답지 않게요.]“그건…….”
[문제점을 꼽자면 한도 끝도 없을 정도입니다. 이상한 기준, 투명하지 못한 선정 방식, 납득하기 어려운 심사 위원 등등. 엄청나죠.]필립의 말은 상당히 길었다. 그러나 요약하면 간단했으니.
‘올해의 상이라는 대단한 이름에 비해 실속이 없다는 거네.’
내가 그 상을 몰랐던 이유가 있었다. 어차피 진짜 좋은 작품은 그런 상으로 결정되는 게 아니었다.
사람들의 눈에 들어오는 그림. 혹은 욕심을 가지도록 만드는 작품.
그게 진짜였다. 수상으로 그럴듯하게 포장한 가짜가 아니라.
당연히 저런 허울뿐인 상은 별다른 소용이 없었다.
[내수용이란 소리부터 시작해, 하다 하다 작가들의 무덤이라는 이야기까지 나오니…… 국립 현대 미술관 측에선 발등에 불 떨어진 상황이거든요.]“……그 정도예요?”
[예. 아마도 그래서 작가님께 SOS를 친 거라는 게…… 저희 라고시안 측의 판단입니다.]“SOS면 구조 신호란 건데요.”
[솔직히…… 현 한국의 미술계에서 작가님이 못하면 다른 사람도 못 할 가능성이 높으니까요.]“……그건 너무 과찬인데요.”
조선까지 갈 것도 없었다. 내가 죽은 이후에도 한국에는 대단한 화가들이 많았으니까.
비디오 아트를 만든 분부터 시작해 한국적인 추상화의 대가라고 불리는 작가님까지. 양손도 모자라 양 발가락까지 동원해도 모자랄 정도로 대단한 화가들은 많았다.
그런데 내가 못 하면 다른 사람도 못 한다고 하다니. 그건 아무리 생각해도 과한 언사였다.
이런 내 생각을 알고 있다는 듯 필립의 또렷한 목소리가 전화기 안에서 들려왔다.
[현재 살아 있는 화가 중 한국에 작가님 만한 사람이 잘 없으니까요.]과찬이라는 내 말에도 필립은 본인의 의견을 굽히지 않았다. 오히려 설명을 보충할 뿐이었다.
확신하듯 말하는 그 이야기를 들은 나. 괜스레 귀가 뜨거워지는 기분이었다.
과연 미국인. 부끄러움 따위 전혀 없다는 듯이 남을 칭찬하는 필립이었다.
그 덕분일까. 난 얼굴에 손부채질하며 질문을 던지게 되었다.
“후…… 호텔에서 몇 시까지 가면 되는 거예요?”
아침부터 낯 뜨거운 칭찬을 들었으니, 그에 걸맞게 일해야 하지 않겠는가.
‘얼른 용건을 다 들어야 다시 작업실에 돌아가기도 할 거고.’
하루에 반드시 그려야 하는 그림의 할당량.
그걸 순조롭게 채우기 위해서라도 난 최대한 빨리 에일대 내에 있는 내 작업실로 돌아갈 작정이었다.
‘저런 말까지 듣는데, 게으름을 피울 수는 없지.’
과거와 달리 온전하게 인정받고 있는 지금. 난 환생을 하고서야 찾아온 이 귀한 기회를 놓칠 생각이 없었다.
그렇기에 아직 시간이 있음에도 불구하고 서둘러 에일대에 있는 내 작업실로 돌아가고 싶어졌다.

문이 열리자 보이는 익숙한 풍경. 공기에서까지 느껴지는 편한 기운은 어깨에 들어간 힘까지 풀어 주었다.
‘역시 작업실이 제일이라니까.’
밖에서 아무리 맛있는 음식을 먹고 좋은 이야기를 듣는다고 해도 내게 제일 편한 장소는 작업실이었다.
마구 휘갈기던 그림들이 널브러져 있는 모습들까지 보기 좋았다.
‘좋네. 참으로 좋아.’
한층 편안해진 기분에 콧노래까지 흥얼거리며 자리에 앉았다.
사실 작업실은 내일 와도 괜찮았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 곧바로 이 작업실로 돌아온 이유가 있었다.
뉴욕에서 에일대 쪽으로 오는 차 안. 그 안에서 머릿속을 휘젓던 그림. 그걸 곧바로 내 손으로 그려 보고 싶었으니까.
“흐음.”
‘이번 휘트니 비엔날레의 주제는 경계선이지.’
경계선 하면 떠오르는 건 많았다.
하지만 휘트니 비엔날레에 어울려야 한다는 점. 동시에 거기 오는 사람들의 눈길을 사로잡기 위한 경계선 중 내가 떠올린 것이 하나 있었다.
‘미국은 그 어떤 곳보다 다양한 사람들이 살아가는 곳이야.’
에일대만 봐도 그랬다. 같은 학생이라고 해도 아이들의 국적과 인종은 모두 달랐다.
‘다양하지만 분명 다르거늘…… 한국인, 중국인, 일본인은 그 차이가 꽤 커도, 여기선 잘 구별하지 못하지.’
언뜻 보면 유사한 외향을 가졌기 때문일까. 순수한 미국 국적의 학생들은 한국인, 중국인, 일본인 학생들의 다른 점을 잘 알아차리지 못했다.
‘이걸 활용하면 작품 하나 만들 수 있을 것 같은데…….’
스테이크의 미묘하게 다른 굽기를 사람들이 구분하는 것처럼. 술의 미세하게 다른 점을 마시는 이들이 알아차리는 것처럼.
그림에서도 사람의 다름을, 그 경계선을 표현할 수 있었다.
오히려 그림이 더 쉬웠다. 발전된 시대, 그에 따라 다양해진 색은 농도, 명도, 채도를 아주 세밀하게 조절할 수 있었으니까.
그 확신이 든 순간, 난 여기로 곧장 달려올 수밖에 없었다. 지금 그리지 않고서는 잠이 오지 않을 것 같았으니까.
