168화 무심코 보던 작품이 더 좋아지는 법
“흠흠. 우선 이 그림은 20호(72.7cm*53.0cm)쯤 되어 보이는 작품이네요.”
그녀의 말대로 그림 자체는 20호(72.7cm*53.0cm)쯤 되어 보였다. 작지는 않은 해당 작품에서 모리엔이 먼저 손으로 가리킨 부분은 상 위였다.
“한눈에 보기엔 단순히 식사하는 그림이죠. 여기 불고기로 보이는 것도 있고…… 한국의 붉은 김치도 보이네요.”
세 사람이 밥을 먹는 장면. 그건 윤성 신 작가님 특유의 가는 선으로 그림은 잘 표현되어 있었다.
일반적으로 사람들이 생활하는 그림을 그렸기 때문일까. 보는 이의 입장에서는 좀 더 눈에 확실히 들어오는 작품이었다.
“그렇죠? 심지어 비빔밥도 있어요. 한국 가서 나름 맛있게 먹은 음식이죠.”
필립은 아는 음식이 나와 반가운 듯 반응했다. 그는 좋은 청자였다. 그녀의 말에 적당한 호응을 하면서 대답해 주고 있었으니까.
“예. 근데 음식들이 다 아는 익숙한 음식들 아닌가요?”
“어…… 그러고 보니.”
불고기, 비빔밥, 그리고 김치까지. 한국을 알게 되는 외국인들이 가장 먼저 접하는 음식들이었다.
필립이나 모리엔과 같이 윤성 신 작가님 때문에 한국을 아는 외국인이라면 더더욱 잘 알게 될 그런 음식을 말이다.
낯선 그림에서 아는 모습이 나왔기에 더 눈이 간 작품. 하지만 이상한 건 사실이었다.
이걸 그린 화가는 나고 자란 곳이 모두 한국인인 작가였으니까. 그런데 미국인인 그들의 눈에 잘 들어오는 한국식 그림이라니?
“작가님께선 훨씬 많은 음식들을 알고 계실 텐데요. 하필 나온 그림이 한국인도 아닌 저희가 다 아는 한국 음식이라니. 신기하지 않나요?”
“그건…….”
이쯤 되자 필립도 이 그림에 뭔가 이상함을 느낀 게 분명했다. 그녀의 설명을 들으면서 다시 한번 유심히 그림을 살펴보는 것을 보니 말이다.
“그런 와중에 여기 식사를 하는 사람들의 특징이 재미있죠.”
“특징이요?”
“먼저 숟가락이 깨끗하죠. 무려 비빔밥을 먹고 있는데도요. 보아하니 손도 안 댄 것 같은데요?”
필립도 알고 있었다. 비빔밥은 그 이름에 걸맞게 숟가락으로 이리저리 밥을 섞어서 먹는 음식이었다.
그런데 그걸 먹으면서 숟가락에 손도 대지 않았다니. 이걸 그린 게 한국인인 윤성 신 화가님이 아니었다면 고증 오류라고 해도 할 말이 없을 작품이었다.
“그러고 보니…… 이거 비빔밥 모양이 그대로 남아 있네요?”
이들이 이 음식이 비빔밥이라고 눈치챌 수 있었던 이유. 그건 작가님께서 워낙 세밀하게 묘사를 하신 탓도 분명히 있었다.
하지만 결정적인 건 그 모양이 전혀 흐트러지지 않고 남아 있는 것에 있었으니. 필립은 그제야 그걸 알아차린 기색이었다.
비벼 먹는 음식이 마치 처음 나온 것처럼 가지런하게 모양을 유지하다니. 이 음식을 아는 사람이 보면 이건 이상한 그림이었다.
“거기다 결정적으로는 밥그릇을 들고 있는 이 사람!”
그러고 보니 생각보다 무거워 보이는 비빔밥 그릇을 들고 있는 사람. 거의 얼굴만 한 그릇을 들고 있다니. 상당히 부자연스러운 모습이었다.
그 큰 그릇을 들고 있다니. 손목이 괜찮을지 걱정되는 장면이었으니까.
“응? 한국에서 전 이렇게 먹은 적이 한 번도 없는데요.”
“그랬어요?”
“예. 솔직히 이렇게 들고 먹으면…… 엄청 무거울 것 같은데요.”
이상하다는 듯이 고개를 갸웃거리는 필립. 그런 그를 보며 모리엔은 의미심장한 미소를 지었다.
“……당연히 없으시겠죠. 한국 사람들은 밥을 식탁 위에 놓고 먹으니까요.”
“그러고 보니…….”
“예. 대표적인 한국식 메뉴를 먹고 있는 이들. 이 그림의 비밀은 이 사람들이 한국인이 아니라는 것에 있습니다.”
얼굴부터 시작해 음식들까지. 누가 봐도 동양인인 이들은 언뜻 보기엔 한국인으로 보였다.
그러나 잘 보면 이들은 한국인이 아닌 게 분명했다.
“그러고 보니, 음식들이 다 외국인들이 한국 가서 먹을 법한 거네요. 저도 가서 많이 먹었는데…….”
윤성 신 작가님의 담당인 필립은 한국어가 능숙했다. 때때로 작가님과 한국어로 이야기하는 걸 그녀 또한 들었으니까.
아마도 윤성 작가님을 담당하며 한국도 종종 왔다 갔다 했으리라. 그만큼 한국도 익숙했던 필립. 그렇기에 이 정도 설명만 가지고도 다 알아들은 것이리라.
“그럼 이 사람들은 한국인이 아니면 뭐에요? 다른 나라 사람인거죠?”
“예전에 제가 어디서 봤는데요. 언뜻 보면 비슷하지만…… 명확히 다른 것이 한국과 일본의 식사 예절이었죠.”
“그런 것도 찾아보셨어요?”
“윤성 신 작가님이 한국인이신데, 당연히 공부해야죠.”
모리엔은 당연하다는 어투로 사뭇 당당하게 입을 열었다.
해당 화가의 작품을 알기 위해 그 화가에 관해 공부해야 하는지, 혹은 그렇지 않은지. 이건 늘 논란의 대상이었다.
그림 자체만 봐야 한다고 하는 사람도 있었으며, 그림에 더해 시대상이나 화가의 생각까지 고려해야 한다는 쪽도 있었으니까.
이중 모리엔은 그림을 더 잘 이해하기 위해선 화가나 그 뒷배경을 공부하는 게 좋다는 쪽이었다.
그로 인해 그녀는 당연히 윤성 신 작가에 대해 공부했다. 자연스럽게 한국에서 대해서 알게 된 건 덤이었으니.
“일본인이었군요. 이렇게 보니 꽤 다르네.”
“작가님. 혹시 나머지 작품도 이런가요?”
신 작가님이 그리신 작품은 총 셋. 다른 작품들이 이런 특징을 가지고 있다면, 다음번 작품부터는 더 잘 찾아낼 자신이 있는 그녀였다.
“일부는 그렇죠.”
“일부는 그렇다는 말씀은…….”
“궁금하시면, 얼른 다음 작품도 보실래요?”
“네! 당연히 봐야…… 아, 근데요. 작가님.”
흔쾌히 작품을 보려고 했던 모리엔. 그녀는 잠시 멈칫했다.
“제가 필립에게 한 설명 말이에요. 제대로 한 것 맞죠?”
이래 보여도 직접 이 그림을 그린 화가 앞에서 남에게 한 설명 아닌가. 당연히 그녀는 그 그림의 진정한 주인이자 창조한 장본인의 눈치를 볼 수밖에.
“잘하셨습니다.”
“오. 그럼 전부 놓치지 않고 한 거예요?”
“엄…… 놓치지 않았다고 하기엔.”
거기까지 말한 작가님은 어색한 미소를 지으셨다. 차마 그녀에겐 말하지 못한다는 그 얼굴.
그 표정을 본 모리엔은 눈치챘다. 그녀가 말한 것뿐만이 아니라 다른 특징들이 이 그림에 녹아 있다는 것을.
“……제가 뭔가를 다 알지는 못했군요.”
“그래도 단번에 여기까지 꿰뚫어 본 건 대단하신 거예요.”
풀이 죽은 그녀를 위로하듯 윤성 신 작가님께서는 상냥한 어조로 말문을 여셨다. 하지만 그런 위로가 그녀에게 도움이 될 리가 없었다.
“뭔지 이야기해 주시면 안 될까요? 제가 뭘 놓친 거죠?”
말만 해 주면 당장에라도 어딘가에 박제해 둔 채 공부하겠다는 듯. 그녀의 눈빛은 이글이글 불타올랐다.
활활 타오르는 그녀의 눈빛 덕분일까. 윤성 작가님께서는 좀 더 구체적으로 속내를 꺼내셨다.
“진짜로 큐레이터님이 부족해서 알아내지 못하신 게 아니에요.”
“그게 무슨…….”
“이건 지금 보면 잘 보이지 않는 게 당연하거든요. 이 그림은 완성작이 아니니까요.”
“……그러고 보니, 이거 완성품이 아니었죠.”
이미 이대로도 충분히 좋은 작품이었다. 특히나 그림 속에 숨겨진 비밀을 알기 위해 세세하게 살펴볼수록 더더욱 훌륭한 작품이었다.
그림 안에 이미 많은 것들이 포함된 것은 물론 작품 자체로만 봐도 세밀한 선이 돋보였으니까.
‘색도 굉장히 공을 들이신 게 눈에 보이는데…… 이게 완성작이 아니라니.’
그림 속 사람들의 피부색. 그리고 상 위에 놓인 음식들도 충분히 잘 표현되어 있었다.
지금 당장 어느 전시실에 가져다 놓아도 될 정도로 위화감이 없었으니까.
그러나 윤성 작가님께서는 그런 작품을 보시면서도 꽤나 냉정하게 말씀하실 뿐이셨다. 이건 아직 미완성작이라고.
“예. 완성품이 당연히 아니죠. 그러니까 더 자세한 건 우리 완성품을 보고 이야기하죠.”
“예?”
“사실 큐레이터님 정도면 그때쯤에는 제가 말하지 않아도 다 알아차리실 수 있을 것 같거든요.”
널 믿는다는 표정으로 환하게 웃으시는 작가님. 그런 그분을 보며 모리엔은 멍한 표정으로 고개를 끄덕일 수밖에 없었다.

두 사람을 배웅한 난 가만히 세 작품을 바라보는 중이었다.
‘생각보다 보는 눈들이 좋구나.’
매번 전시회를 하고 내 작품을 남들에게 보일 때마다 느껴지는 점이 있었다.
이 시대의 사람들은 수많은 정보를 손쉽게 접하기 때문일까. 어지간한 사람들도 상당히 보는 눈이 좋았다.
나름대로 교묘하게 설치해 놓은 장치들을 다들 발견하곤 했으니까.
모리엔도 마찬가지였다. 아직 미완성인 작품을 가지고도 그 안에 담긴 많은 것들을 손쉽게 눈치를 챘으니.
‘좀 더 여러 가지를 담아도…… 괜찮을 것 같은데?’
그림에 이런저런 의미와 장치를 담는 것. 이 부분은 내가 전생에서부터 좋아하던 작업이었다.
그 덕분일까. 이전 생의 그림은 지금도 논의가 활발히 진행 중이었다.
그림에서 사용한 하나의 소품이나, 그 당시의 날씨와 일자를 말해 주는 달까지.
전부 하나하나 꼼꼼하게 사람들에게 분석당했다. 무척이나 기쁘게도.
‘전작인 월하정인도 그때는 잘 모르던 것도…… 지금은 바로바로 다들 알아차린단 말이야.’
. 이 작품은 꽤 오랜 기간 사람들의 착각을 만든 작품이었다.
그림의 맨 윗부분에 있는 거꾸로 그려진 달. 그 달을 본 수많은 이들이 내 그림을 보고 오류라고 칭했다. 꽤나 큰 그림인 만큼 그림을 그리면서 뭔가 잘못 그린 거라고.
허나, 작가가 온전히 의도하고 그린 그림에 오류나 실수가 어디 있겠는가. 그렇게 보인다면 그 또한 작가의 의도인 경우가 많았다.
당연히 이 월하정인 속의 초승달도 마찬가지였다. 그건 엄밀히 말해 내가 직접 본 달을 그린 것이었다.
‘그날은 진짜 드문 달이 보이는 날이었으니까.’
당시의 난 지금과는 약간 다른 류의 그림을 그렸다. 내 눈에 보인 걸 최대한 정확하고 온전하게 화폭에 담는 것. 그거만을 주로 노력했으니까.
일명 진경산수화의 시대. 그게 내가 살았던 조선 후기였다.
‘그런 의미에서 보면 내 그림도 조금씩은 달라지고 있는 건가?’
사진기가 없고 색이 부족했던 조선. 그곳에서 난 내가 표현할 수 있는 최선의 그림을 그렸다.
화려한 색채와 사람들의 관심을 자극하는 그림. 모든 이들에게 연인들의 이야기는 관심사였던 만큼 내 작품들은 주로 그런 류가 많았다.
그러나 지금은 달랐다. 사진기를 넘어 각종 진귀한 영상 매체가 난무하는 시대. 색 또한 인간이 볼 수 있는 걸 넘어 구분하기 어려운 색조차 만들어 낼 수 있는 시기.
그게 지금 이 시대였다. 그런 시대에 사는 사람들의 욕심을 자극하는 그림. 내 주변 사람들의 눈길을 확실하게 사로잡을 수 있는 작품. 난 그걸 그리기 위해 꾸준하게 노력했다.
그리고 지금 이 세 작품에 내가 심어 놓는 또 하나의 특이점. 이걸 발견하는 이들은 이 세 작품을 모두 한 번에 가지고 싶어지리라.
‘휘트니 비엔날레라…… 이걸 본 사람들이 어떨지 기대되네.’
전생에서는 조선에서, 이번 생에서도 난 한국에서 태어나 한국에서 자란 사람이었다.
한반도에서 늘 나고 자랐기에 미국에서 사는 사람들과는 미세하게 다른 감성을 가졌을 수 있었다.
이들은 내가 살아온 환경은 물론 문화나 언어 등 많은 부분이 달랐으니까.
하지만 난 믿었다. 같은 인간이라면, 나와 같이 이 시대를 살아가는 사람이라면 이 작품에 눈길을 주고 말게 될 것이란 사실을 말이다.
‘그림 속에 숨겨진 것들을 알고 나면…… 무심코 보던 작품이 더 좋아지는 법이지.’
전생과 이번 생 모두 난 풍속화를 그리는 화가였다. 그 때문일까. 일상적인 그림 속에 이런 흥미 있는 특징을 숨겨 두는 게 좋았다.
작품을 보는 사람들이 나와 같은 인간이라면, 눈길을 끄는 데다가 재미있는 특징까지 있는 작품을 놓치고 싶진 않으리라.
