170화 준비하느라 엄청 바쁜 거 아니었어?
모리엔은 생명수 같은 아메리카노를 마시는 중이었다. 그야말로 혈관에 커피라도 수혈하지 않았다간 이 현실을 견딜 수 없을 지경이었으니까.

커피가 든 컵을 부여잡은 채 책상에 머리를 박은 그녀. 모리엔은 자기도 모르게 멍하니 중얼거렸다.
“으아아! 진짜 다들 왜 이러는 거야.”
도무지 이해할 수가 없었다. 이렇게나 예상과 다르게 일이 흘러가다니. 작가들의 머릿속은 알다가도 모를 지경이었다.
“경험 많은 선배님들 앞에선 다들 이러지 않으려나…….”
멍하니 풀이 죽은 채 중얼거리는 그녀. 모리엔의 곁으로 다가온 사람이 있었다.
“뭐야. 신이 나서 나가더니, 무슨 일이 있습니까?”
“……그러게요. 무슨 일이 있네요.”
알비오는 이번 큐레이터 중 가장 신인인 그녀에게 막중한 임무를 맡긴 장본인이었다. 그녀를 추천해 여기에 있게 한 사람이기도 했고 말이다.
곧 있을 휘트니 비엔날레에 참가하는 작가는 총 65명. 그중 모리엔이 맡은 작가는 고작 15명이었다.
다른 두 큐레이터가 25명씩을 담당하는 걸 생각해 보면 꽤 적은 숫자였다.
그러나 여기엔 그만한 이유가 있었으니. 그 때문에 알비오도 모리엔에게 더 신경 쓰는 중이었다.
“담당 화가님들이 다들 한가락 하는 화가잖습니까.”
모리엔이 맡은 15명의 화가들은 이번 휘트니 비엔날레의 기대주들이 많았다. 상대적으로 다른 화가들에 비해 기존의 이름값이 있는 작가들이 대다수였기에.
그렇기에 인원도 다른 큐레이터들보다 적은 것이었다. 딱 봐도 그들의 요구 사항이 더 많은 것이 뻔했으니까.
아니나 다를까. 처음에는 좋아하던 모리엔도 어느새 시든 식물처럼 비리비리해진 상태였다.
“평소 팬이었던 화가도 끼어 있다고 좋아하는 게 엊그제 같은데…… 여기 왜 이러고 있는 겁니까?”
“진짜 좋았어요. 솔직히 처음에는 너무 기뻤는데요.”
테이블에 얼굴을 대고 있던 모리엔. 그녀는 어기적거리며 고개를 들었다. 생명수처럼 커피를 한 모금 마신 뒤에야 비로소 제대로 입을 열었으니.
“그런데 다들 본인들의 의견만 주장하신다고요. 전혀 굽히지 않으시고요.”
“그래요?”
“예. 누군 다른 화가랑 같이 놓이는 건 거부하는데, 또 누군 무조건 바로 옆에 붙여 달라고 하니…… 제가 진짜 미칠 지경이네요.”
“흠. 나 그거 누군지 알 것 같은데?”
“네?”
“혹시 그거 다 신 작가랑 관련 있는 거 맞죠?”
“헙.”
모리엔은 자기도 모르게 입을 가렸다. 대체 그가 어찌 알게 되었는지 신기했으니까.
“아마 한 명은 윤성 작가 작품이랑 떨어뜨려 달라고 했을 거고…… 하나는 같이 붙여 달라고 했을 것 같은데.”
“……제가 티를 냈어요?”
“아뇨. 맡은 화가 중 두 명을 이미 알아서요.”
“두명이면…….”
“칼슨이랑 리바이. 둘 다 꽤나 촉망받는 작가들이죠. 양쪽 다 아버지와 스승의 그늘에 가려져 있는 편이긴 하지만.”
“그건…… 아무래도 어쩔 수 없지 않으실까요. 하나는 아버지가 알렉스 유니언이고, 하나는 직계 스승이 잭슨 나올로니까요.”
“물론 한 쪽은 현대 미술계의 인물화 거장이고 다른 한쪽은 흑인 미술의 계보를 잇는 화가니까 그럴 수 있죠. 제 말은 그렇기에 그들의 성향이 특이하다고 말하는 겁니다.”
그는 이미 진즉부터 알았다는 듯이 아무렇지도 않게 입을 열었다.
“각자가 뛰어넘어야 할 산이 너무 높으니까. 아무래도 성격이 좀…… 보통은 아니거든요.”
이미 그녀의 고충을 알고 있다는 듯이 이야기해 주는 알비오. 그 덕분일까. 그녀의 입에선 진정한 푸념이 흘러나오기 시작했다.
“신 작가님께서 그림에 대한 걸 빨리 알려 주셨을 때는 참 좋았는데…….”
크기부터 시작해 어떤 분위기의 작품이 될지. 미리 정보를 큐레이터가 알게 되는 건 중요했다.
“덕분에 위치를 잡기 좋았거든요. 스타일이 워낙 확실하시잖아요!”
다시 좋아하는 작가에 대해 말하는 중이기 때문일까. 모리엔은 언제 힘이 없었냐는 듯이 활기찬 어조로 입을 열었다.
“그 특유의 동양적인 느낌에 아름다운 색채가 진짜…… 그림을 보고 있으면 묘하게 빨려 들어가는 느낌이잖아요?”
“신 작가의 작품이 그런 느낌이 있기는 하죠.”
“그러니까요! 그 풍부하고 유려한 색에 곡선의 아름다움이 더해지는 그런 그림이라니! 그걸 컴퓨터도 아닌 붓이랑 물감으로 그렸다는 게 믿기지가 않는다니까요.”
그는 이대로 두었다간 모리엔이 그림을 찬양하는 데 모든 시간을 쏟을 것이란 느낌을 받았다. 그 예감을 지우기 위해 그는 재빠르게 입을 열었다.
“그렇게나 좋은데 무슨 문제가 있는 겁니까?”
“아…… 근데 문제는…… 대체 다들 어찌 알게 된 건지 신 작가님의 작품이 놓일 곳을 대강 안다는 거예요.”
한번 보면 그 후 이 그림은 윤성 신 작가의 작품이라는 걸 단번에 알 수 있을 정도로 매력적인 화풍.
그 독특함과 개성적인 면 때문일까. 윤성 화가의 작품은 다른 화가들에게도 관심의 대상인 모양이었다.
“알 수밖에 없죠. 윤성 작가는 작품이 제일 먼저 완성될 예정이고, 그 때문에 보고도 빨랐으니까요.”
“결국 제가 문제였군요. 대체 과거의 전 왜 그렇게 보고를 서두른 걸까요…….”
“이해는 합니다. 작가에게 조금이라도 좋은 자리를 주고 싶어서였겠죠.”
기둥 없는 전시관이라고 불리는 게 휘트니 미술관이었다. 그만큼 공간적으로 탁 트여 있었다.
그 때문일까. 작가들이 선호하는 자리가 있었다. 처음 입구에서 바로 작품이 보이는 곳 혹은 사람들이 앉아서 작품을 볼 수 있는 위치.
이런 장소에 놓인 작품들이 아무래도 더 눈에 들어오는 법이었으니까.
“진짜 어떻게 해야 하는지 모르겠어요…….”
“그런가요.”
“작가님들 말을 다 들었다간 자리가 엉망진창이 될 것 같은데.”
이번 휘트니 비엔날레의 큐레이터 입장이 어려운 이유 중 하나. 그게 이것이었다.
이미 죽은 화가들의 작품이 아닌 엄연히 살아 있는 작가의 작품을 받아서 전시하는 것이기에 생기는 문제. 바로 작가들의 의견이 강력하게 반영되고 있다는 점이었다.
죽어서 이미 없는 고인이 된 화가들의 작품은 온전하게 큐레이터의 뜻에 따라 전시를 할 수 있었다. 그러나 이번 경우는 그런 일을 할 수 없었으니 말이다.
모리엔이 너무 풀이 죽어 보였기 때문일까. 그는 그녀에게 약간의 힌트를 주기로 마음먹었다.
“그냥 다 들어줘요.”
“네? 다 들어주다니요?”
“지금 문제가 그거 아니에요? 정작 윤성 작가의 근처에 가면 안 되는 사람은 한판 붙어 보겠다고 하는 중이고…… 근처에서 좀 얼쩡거렸으면 좋겠는 사람은 피하는 중인 거요.”
“…… 아주 정확하게 알고 계시는데요.”
“제가 볼 때는 그거 다 들어줘도 문제없을 것 같아서요.”
“……좀 설명을 더 해 주시면 안 되나요. 제가 멍청해서 그런가, 못 알아듣겠는데.”
“설명할 것도 없이…… 우리 휘트니 미술관 구조 한번 봐요.”
그러면서 그가 가리킨 건 미술관의 평면도였다. 계단부터 시작해 엘리베이터 등이 표시된 일종의 지도. 그걸 잘 활용하면 관람객들의 동선을 손쉽게 예측할 수 있었다.
“기둥 없는 미술관이라고 불리는 만큼 기둥을 세우는 건 무리지만…… 벤치 정도는 충분히 놓을 수 있죠.”
“벤치…….”
“거기다 그림을 꼭 벽에만 걸라는 법 없는 거 알죠? 유리관 같은 데 넣는 것도 한번 고려해 볼 만하죠.”
“설마…….”
“힌트는 여기까지. 한번 잘 고민해 보고 결과 알려 주십시오. 제대로 된 보고서 기다리고 있을 테니.”
찡긋거리며 윙크까지 한 후 뒤를 도는 알비오. 뒤를 돈 상태로 손까지 흔드는 그를 보며 모리엔은 갑자기 자리에서 벌떡 일어났다.
대충 어찌하면 좋을지 각이 나왔으니 말이다.

긍정적인 중간 평가도 받았으니, 내가 할 일은 단 하나였다. 작품을 완성하는 것.
5월 말에 열리는 휘트니 비엔날레에 내기로 한 세 작품. 난 에일대 수업을 듣는 시간을 뺀 나머지는 온전히 여기에 집중하는 중이었다.
‘사람들이 흔하게 볼 수 있는 풍속화이니, 뭔가 장치를 하나 더 심고 싶은데…….’
미묘한 색깔. 그리고 그림 속에 숨겨진 몇몇의 특징들. 그건 분명 이 작품을 보는 사람에게 흥미를 주는 요소였다.
하지만 난 이보다 한 발자국 더 나아가고 싶었다. 이번에 내가 작품을 선보이는 곳은 일반 전시회가 아닌 비엔날레라고 불리는 장소였기에.
‘예로부터 비엔날레는 실험적인 걸 많이 한다고 했지?’
속으로 그 생각을 떠올린 난 세 작품에 한가지 특이점을 더 심어 두기로 했다.
한식을 먹는 일본인, 한복을 입은 중국인. 그리고 포장용 커피를 들고 있는 한국인까지.
이 세 가지를 엮을 만한 재주가 한 가지 떠올랐다.
‘큭. 이거 단번에 알아차리는 사람이 많으려나?’
흥미로운 생각이 떠오른 난 약간의 수고를 더해 그림에 세밀한 선을 그려 나갔다.
얼마간 그림에 집중하고 있었을까. 문득 정신이 든 나는 내 스마트폰이 화려한 불빛을 내뿜고 있다는 걸 깨달았다.
‘무슨 일이지?’
스마트폰을 들여다본 난 머릿속에 의문이 피어올랐다. 거기엔 지금 전화 오기엔 아직 이른 이름이 들어 있었으니까.
“여보세요.”
[작가님! 안녕하십니까!]“필립? 간 지 얼마 안 되었는데, 무슨 일 있어요?”
[아하하하. 작가님께서 잘 지내시나 해서요.]“……제가 잘 지내나 해서 전화했다고요?”
[물론이죠. 작가님. 저희가 그렇게 떠나시고 거긴 작가님 혼자 남으셨으니까요.]당연히 모리엔과 필립이 떠난 이후 난 여기 혼자 남았다. 원래부터 혼자서 유학을 온 건이었으니, 새삼스러울 일도 아니었다.
그렇기에 필립의 지금 말은 이상하기 짝이 없었다.
“……우리가 본 게 벌써 몇 년인데, 제가 그런 말에 넘어갈 리가 없잖아요.”
[크흠. 눈치채신 겁니까?]“당연히요. 원래 혼자인데, 새삼 제가 혼자라 걱정된다고 하면 누구든 이상한 걸 눈치챌걸요…….”
[아하하하. 근데 작가님. 걱정돼서 전화드린 게 사실입니다.]“그게 무슨…….”
[혹시 거기 낯선 사람이 찾아가지 않았습니까?]“낯선 사람이요?”
[예. 갑자기 작가님 주변을 어떤 수상한 사람이 맴돈다던가, 뭐 그런 일이 있으셨나 해서요.]이 뜬금없는 질문은 뭐란 말인가. 앞뒤 없이 이렇게 난데없는 질문을 받으면 내가 할 말은 하나뿐이었다.
“대체 무슨 소리를 하시는 거예요?”
“좀 알아듣게 설명해 줘요. 내가 지금 듣는 게 한국어인지 모르겠네. 설명이 어려우면 영어로 해도 됩니다. 내가 잘 알아들어 볼 테니까.”
필립의 한국어 실력이 어지간한 한국인 뺨친다는 걸 알고 있음에도 이렇게 말할 정도였다.
그만큼 지금 필립이 무슨 소리를 하는지 도무지 알아들을 수가 없을 정도였으니까.
“그게…… 아트 바젤 스위스 측에서 작가님을 찾을 거라는 이야기를 들어서요.”
“……네?”
이해할 수 없는 소리였다. 아트 바젤 스위스. 그걸 이번 휘트니 비엔날레를 위해 내가 직접 거절해 둔 상태였으니까.
“그거 안 한다고 하지 않았어요?”
[예. 분명 그랬죠.]“그래서 ‘이번 말고 그다음에나 노려봐야지.’ 이런 식으로 생각하고 있었는데요.”
어차피 조만간 교환 학생 가는 걸 시도해 보려는 나였다. 그때 간 김에 같은 유럽권에 있는 아트 바젤 스위스에 도전해 보는 것도 좋다고 여겼기다.
즉, 난 바로 직후에 있는 이번 년도 아트 바젤 스위스는 깔끔하게 포기한 상태였다.
그러니 거기서 날 찾을 리가 없는 상태였다. 그런데도 아트 바젤 측에서 내게 올까 봐 걱정하는 필립이라니, 기이하기 짝이 없었다.
“거기서 절 찾는다고요?”
[예. 들리는 정보에 따르면, 작가님을 만나려고 미국에까지 올 거란 이야기가 있어서요.]“아니…… 대체 왜요?”
‘스위스에서 미국…… 엄청 멀지 않나?’
이해할 수가 없었다. 이번 아트 바젤에 나갈 화가도 아닌 날 대체 왜 찾으러 온다는 말인가.
‘아트 바젤 스위스 준비하느라 엄청 바쁜 거 아니었어?’
미술계 최대 아트 페어이자 전 세계의 큰손들이 다 모인다는 행사 아닌가. 준비하는 것만 해도 한 보따리일 것이 분명했다.
그런 와중에 이번 아트 페어의 작가도 아닌 날 보겠다고 미국에 오겠다니. 이해할 수 없는 행동 양식이었다.
