패래스와 차경은 국제 커플이었다. 이제는 결혼해 국제 부부였다. 이들 부부는 오랜만에 뉴욕에서 데이트하기 위해 나들이를 나온 상태였다.
영화 보고 밥 먹는 게 주요 일정인 데이트. 이 데이트에 변주를 주기 위해 두 사람은 한가지 결단을 내렸으니. 바로 미술관에 가 보는 것이었다.
“근데……굳이 여기를 봐야 하는 거야?”
“굳이라니?”
“휘트니 말고도 볼 미술관은 많잖아. 메트로폴리탄부터 뉴욕 미술관인 모마까지. 굳이 휘트니가 아니어도 갈 데는 많은 걸.”
며칠 동안 봐도 전부 감상하지 못한다는 곳. 그게 메트로폴리탄 미술관이었다. 해외에서 관광객들이 오면 제일 먼저 들리는 곳이기도 했다.
거기다 뉴욕을 대표하는 현대 미술관은 아무래도 MoMA였으니. 그가 이렇게 말하는 것도 무리가 아니었다.
“휘트니 비엔날레는 싫은 거야?”
남편의 물음에 차경은 조심스럽게 입을 열었다. 만약 그가 진짜로 원하지 않는다면 장소를 바꿀 용의가 충분히 있는 그녀였다.
“아니. 휘트니도 좋지. 그게 나쁘다는 건 아니야.”
실제로 휘트니 미술관은 뉴욕에서 가 볼 만한 곳으로 손꼽히는 장소였다. 미술관 자체도 볼 만했지만, 뉴욕을 한눈에 바라보게 만드는 카페의 경치도 좋았으니까.
그렇기에 패래스는 고개를 절레절레 저었다.
“다만…… 이왕 휘트니에 올 거면 하퍼 전시회를 할 때 오는 게 낫지 않았나 해서.”
에드워드 하퍼. 휘트니에 가장 많은 작품이 남아 있는 현대 미술 작가였다. 도시인의 고독함을 잘 표현한 작품으로 인해 지금을 살아가는 사람들에게도 인기가 많은 화가였다.
특히나 미국뿐만 아니라 한국에서도 전시를 하며 그 화제성이 더해진 작가였기에, 패래스와 차경은 이 화가를 알고 있었다.
“이왕 휘트니에 오는 거면 에드워드 하퍼의 정도는 보고 싶었거든.”
각종 패러디를 통해 더 잘 알려진 에드워드 하퍼의 작품. 그만큼 대중들에게 친숙한 작품이기에 이 둘도 그걸 한번쯤 실물로 보고 싶다는 생각은 했다.
“그건 언제든 볼 수 있는 거고…… 휘트니 비엔날레는 그렇지 않단 말이야.”
“그야 그렇지. 진짜 딱 이거 하는 기간 아니면 볼 수 없는 작품도 많으니…….”
휘트니 비엔날레는 이름답게 2년에 한 번씩 주제를 정해서 하는 미술계 행사였다. 당연히 이번과 다음의 비엔날레는 다를 수밖에 없었다.
그런 만큼 그해의 비엔날레는 그 시기가 아니면 볼 수 없었다.
“그치? 게다가 이미 알려진 작가의 작품을 보는 것과 휘트니 비엔날레를 보는 건 그 목적부터가 다르지 않을까?”
비엔날레에 대한 기본적인 자료를 검색하며 입을 여는 그녀. 그런 그녀를 보며 패래스는 고개를 모로 기울였다.
“그게 무슨 소리야? 목적이 다르다니?”
“음…… 휘트니는 장차 세계 미술사적으로 유명해질 사람을 미리 보는 맛이 있다는 말이지.”
미술사적으로 유명해질 사람. 지금은 안 그렇다고 해도 나중에는 대단해질 화가들이 이곳 휘트니에 나온다는 의미였다.
“……좀 더 자세히 말해 볼래?”
“방금 당신이 말한 그 에드워드 하퍼. 그 작가도 휘트니가 발굴한 화가인 건 알아?”
“그런 소리를 들어 본 기억은 있는데.”
“들어 본 것 같은 게 아니라 무조건 들었을걸. 최근 휘트니가 가장 자랑스럽게 여기는 화가 중 하나니까.”
“그 정도야?”
“응. 휘트니 본인들이 발굴했다는 자부심이 엄청난 화가거든. 뭐. 에드워드 하퍼 정도면 그럴 만도 하지.”
그녀의 말에 그는 떨떠름한 얼굴이 되었다. 휘트니가 그 정도로 에드워드 하퍼를 애정하는 이유가 있는 모양이었다.
“그런 거였어? 난 몰랐는데.”

소위 말하는 예언가 놀이를 즐겨 하는 사람들은 분명히 있었다.
딴 놈들이 그 가치를 모를 때 미리 알아봤다는 자부심. 본인들의 눈이 유난히 좋다는 그 자랑스러움을 원하는 이들은 꽤나 많았다.
“휘트니는 장차 스타를 넘어 현대 미술에 한 획을 그을 만한 작가들이 나오는 곳이란 말이지.”
“……여기가 그 정도였어?”
“물론 대부분은 그 후보의 후보 정도긴 하지만.”
나오는 화가들이 모두 그렇게 대단해지는 건 아니었다. 매년 수십의 화가들이 휘트니 비엔날레에 나오는데, 거기 나오는 모두가 대단해진다는 건 말이 되지 않으니까.
그러나 비디오 아트의 창시자로 유명한 박남준도 휘트니에서 비엔날레를 했으며, 에드워드 하퍼도 여기서 비엔날레를 했다.
그 외에도 현대 미술계의 수많은 명성 높은 화가들이 이 휘트니 비엔날레와 한번쯤은 인연을 맺었다. 이 정도면 상당히 적중률이 높은 행사였다.
“실제로 현대 미술의 중심이 뉴욕으로 옮겨 오면서 진짜로 휘트니에서 발굴한 화가들은 현대 미술을 대표하는 작가로 성장했거든.”
“아하.”
“그러니까 난 개인적으론 이번 휘트니 비엔날레도 봐야 한다고 생각해.”
“확실히 그럴 만하네.”
“혹시 또 알아? 내가 찜한 화가가 그런 어마무시한 작가가 될지 말이야.”
결국 그 과정을 거쳐 이들 부부의 데이트 장소는 휘트니 미술관이 되었다. 외향부터가 미술관답게 아름다운 휘트니.
그 입구에 다가간 그들은 저절로 입이 벌어졌다. 입구에서부터 그야말로 엄청난 인파가 몰린 것이 보였으니까.
“……미술에 관심이 많은 사람들이 이렇게나 많았어?”
좀 과장되게 말하면 뉴욕에서 이 분야에 관심이 있는 이들은 죄다 여기에 왔다고 해도 좋을 정도였다.
반응도 뜨거워 보이는 데다, 세계적인 비엔날레라고까지 하니 그들은 점점 더 높아지는 기대감을 가지고 입구에 들어섰다.
그리고 그 순간 이상할 정도로 눈길을 사로잡는 그림이 있었다. 아니, 정확하게는 그런 그림들이 있었다.

사람은 눈길이 가는 걸 발견하면 저도 모르게 발걸음을 멈추는 법. 이 법칙은 두 사람에게도 통용되었다.
“이 그림…… 뭔가 신기한 느낌이야.”
“오. 나도 그런데…… 왜 그렇지?”
뭔가 사람을 건드리는 느낌이 존재하는 작품이었다. 미묘한 감각을 느낀 그들은 작품을 유심히 살펴보기 시작했다.
이 자리에 그런 행동을 하는 건 그들뿐만이 아니었다. 주변을 지나가는 사람들도 하나둘 이 작품 앞에서 멈춰 서는 게 보였으니까.
“일단 이거 한국이랑 관련 있는 것 같은데? 그래서 나도 모르게 반가웠나?”
그림 자체는 분명 한국적인 느낌이 강했다. 그림체가 어딘가 동양화스러운 느낌도 물론 있었지만, 그보다 더 먼저 눈에 띈 건 그림 속에 있는 물건들이었다.
“이거 한식이지? 거기다가 한복도 있고.”
중간에 설명하는 판넬을 빼면 그림들은 나란히 붙어 있었다. 그리고 그들 뿐만이 아니었다. 이 작품 속에 있는 한식을 알아본 이들은. 옆에서도 소곤거리는 목소리가 들렸으니까.
“나 이거 알아!”
“안다고?”
“이거 한국 음식이야! 그리고 그 옆은 한국 옷인 것 같은데?”
“……그걸 어떻게 아는 거야?”
“내가 요즘 다이어트 하잖아. 한국 음식이 좋다고 해서 좀 알아봤지.”
세계 최대의 비만 국가라는 악명을 가지고 있는 미국. 그런 나라의 사람답게 아무래도 이걸 보는 이들 중 다이어트에 관심 있는 자들이 많은 모양이었다.
“아니…… 음식이야 내가 알겠는데, 이게 한국 옷인 줄은 어찌 아는 거야?”
그건 확실히 특이했다. 음식이야 많이 노출이 되었다지만, 옷은 그 정도는 아니었으니까.
‘그러게? 한복은 보통 잘 알아보기 어렵지 않나?’
귀에 들리는 대화 덕분에 가만히 있던 차경까지 궁금해졌다.
“바지 말이야! 이게 엄청 다르다고!”
“바지?”
“전에 우리 세훈이가 한 말이 있거든.”
말하면서 더 즐거워진 듯 그 이름 모를 여자는 줄줄이 설명을 늘어놓기 시작했다.
“걔가 한국 전통 한복은 오래전부터 바지를 입었다고 했어. 중국이랑 다르다고 엄청 말하던데.”
“……일단 세훈이가 누군지부터 이야기해 주면 안 될까?”
“내가 좋아하는 한국 아이돌 가수.”
“…….”
“나 걔가 그거 입고 나온 게 너무 예뻐서 폰에도 저장되어 있는데, 한번 볼래?”
“……아니. 괜찮아. 우리 그냥 그림이나 보자.”
그들의 말이 웃겼기 때문일까. 하마터면 같이 웃을 뻔한 차경. 다행스럽게도 그 순간 그녀의 눈에 들어온 사람이 있었으니.
정장을 입은 채 깔끔하게 빗어 넘긴 머리 스타일. 그들에게 다가오는 사람은 이 휘트니 비엔날레의 도슨트가 분명했다.
“혹시 이 작품에 대한 설명을 좀 들을 수 있을까요?”
휘트니 비엔날레의 좋은 점이 바로 이것이었다. 전시회에 가까운 비엔날레답게 근처에 있는 도슨트에게 요청해 간단한 설명 정도를 들을 수 있었으니까.
“그럼요. 먼저 이 그림부터 할까요?”
정장을 입은 도슨트가 제일 먼저 가리킨 작품은 맨 왼쪽에 있는 그림이었다.
“맛있는 음식 앞에 앉아 있는 사람들이죠. 이 음식들은 불고기, 김치 등 모두 한국의 음식입니다.”
“오. 한식! 이래서 내 눈에 들어온 건가?”
혹시나 설명에 조금이라도 방해될까 하는 마음에 작게 아내인 차경에게 속삭이는 그였다. 그런 그들의 마음 씀씀이 덕분에 도슨트의 설명은 끊기지 않았다.
“앉아 있는 세 사람들. 문제는 이들의 눈빛이 어딘가 불안해 보인다는 건데요.”
“어? 그러고 보니…….”
“그 이유는 간단합니다. 젓가락을 사용하고 있지만, 이들에게 이 음식은 낯설기 때문이죠. 이들은 한국인이 아니거든요. 그릇을 든 채 젓가락을 쓰는 이들. 이들은 일본인입니다.”
“아하. 그래서 다들 표정이…….”
“서로가 어찌 먹는지 살펴보면서 같이 먹기 위해 눈치를 보는 형국. 작품명 입니다. 보다 낫게 고친 음식을 먹는 법을 뜻하는 말이죠.”
한글과 함께 적혀 있는 한자. 그리고 맨 마지막에 써 있는 영어까지. 각기 다른 글자로 된 작품명은 여기 있는 모든 이들의 눈에 박혔다.
하지만 이 작품에 대한 도슨트의 설명은 이것이 다였다. 이상할 정도로 빨리 곧바로 다음 작품으로 넘어갔으니까.
“그럼 두 번째 그림을 살펴 볼까요?”
“어…….”
두 사람뿐만이 아니라 같이 설명을 듣던 다른 사람들도 당혹스러워 하는 게 피부로 느껴졌다.
마찬가지로 도슨트 또한 느낄 법 한데, 그녀는 아랑곳하지 않았다.
“이 두 번째 작품에서 옷을 입고 있는 다른 사람들 또한 시선이 제각각이죠. 오히려 같은 옷을 입고 있는 다른 사람들의 눈치를 보고 있달까요.”
“……그러고 보니, 그러네?”
“왜지?”
일단 뭐라고 하기 전 그들은 도슨트의 설명에 집중했다. 부족한 설명은 나중에라도 다시 요청하면 된다는 생각이 들었기에.
“이들이 입고 있는 옷은 한복이라고 불리는 한국의 옷입니다. 다만 입고 있는 이들이 한국인이 아니기에 무척이나 어색해하는 장면이죠.”
그 순간이었다. 등 뒤에서 날카로운 목소리가 들려온 것은.
“그건 한국의 옷이 아닌데요! 중국 거예요!”
그러나 도슨트는 이미 이런 걸 예상했다는 듯이 아주 태연하게 입을 열었다.
“한국의 옷이 맞습니다. 이걸 입은 건 중국인이지만요. 그래서 이렇게 어색하게 서로를 바라보는 중입니다.”
“그게 무슨…….”
“일단 바지의 형태가 한국의 한복에서만 보이는 형태입니다. 거기다 치마 또한 둥근 형태죠. 일반적으로 같은 동아시아의 다른 나라 치마가 퍼지는 형태인 것과 다르게요.”
실제로 중국의 전통식 치마들은 일자 형태로 쭉 퍼지는 형식이 많았다. 속치마를 입어 어느 정도 둥글게 퍼지는 한복과 달리.
하지만 전시회에서 소란을 피우는 당사자답게 상대는 호락호락하지 않았다.
“그래도 중국 게 맞아요! 한국의 옷은 중국에서 유래된 건데요!”
“그 이론대로 따지면 모든 문명의 옷은 4대 문명의 발생지에서 온 것이겠죠. 하지만 우리는 정장을 보고 어느 문명의 옷이라고 하지는 않죠. 다양한 문화 속에서 변하는 게 옷이니까요.”
그 소란 때문일까. 사람들의 눈초리가 자꾸 소리치는 그 사람에게로 향했다. 수많은 사람들이 자신을 불쾌한 눈빛으로 바라보자 그제야 그가 잠잠해지는 것이 보였으니.
“…….”
“다행히 제 말을 들으실 생각이 생기셨나 보군요. 심해지면 경호원을 부르려고 했습니다만.”
도슨트는 이런 일이 익숙하다는 듯이 활짝 미소를 지었다. 그 소란 때문일까. 사람들이 점점 더 이쪽으로 모이는 것이 느껴졌다.
