177화 진짜가 가진 힘
바로 직전 날인 어제. 우리 가족들은 휘트니 비엔날레에서 거의 3시간은 있다가 나왔다. 그만큼 꽤 많은 작품들을 전부 둘러봤다는 뜻이었으니.
그런데도 아침부터 다시 휘트니 미술관에 가겠다는 할아버지. 그런 할아버지였지만 난 일단 그곳으로 함께 향했다.
할아버지께서 뭔가 다른 마음이 있으신 듯 보였으니까.

움직이는 차 안에서 할아버지께서는 가만히 창밖만을 바라보셨다. 무언가를 곰곰이 생각하시는 기색이 역력하셨다.

“다 왔어요. 할아버지.”
“그래. 고생했구나.”
할아버지께서는 묵묵히 그림을 보러 올라가셨다. 말 없는 그분의 발걸음이 멈춘 곳.
그곳은 내 작품들 앞이었다.
‘어렴풋이 예상은 했지만…… 진짜일 줄이야.’
어제 한참 동안 내 작품들을 보고 계셨던 할아버지. 내게 다른 가족들이 설명을 듣는 사이에도 가만히 그림만을 바라보셨다.
무언가 말을 하지는 않으셨지만, 느껴지는 감이 있었으니. 할아버지께서는 이 그림이 계속 눈에 밟히시는 게 분명했다.

원래 그림을 감상할 때는 최대한 방해하지 않는 게 예의였다. 나 또한 그걸 좋아했으니까.
그러나 이번은 달랐다. 연세도 있으신 할아버지를 언제까지 세워만 둘 수는 없는 법이었기에.
“할아버지. 이 그림들이 그렇게 마음에 드시는 거예요?”
문의는 많았지만 휘트니 비엔날레가 끝난 게 아니었기에, 아직 이 그림의 주인은 정해지지 않았다.
만약 할아버지가 정말 원하신다면 난 할아버지에게 이 그림을 드릴 용의가 충분히 있었다.
원래 팔기로 하고 설정해 둔 그림 가격이야 내가 지불하면 되는 문제였으니까.
그러나 할아버지께서 하신 첫 말씀은 내 예상과는 조금 달랐다.
“이리 보니 윤성이 네 그림…… 좀 변하긴 했구나.”
“제 그림이요?”
변했다니. 보통 이런 식의 대화에서 변했다는 말이 나올 때는 부정적인 느낌인 경우가 많았다.
그렇기에 난 다시 내 작품을 새삼스럽게 들여다보았다.
가느다란 선들로 이루어진 그림. 수채화와 더불어 유화와 아크릴화까지. 각종 물감들을 적절하게 사용해 사진과 회화의 경계를 잘 보이고 있었다.
그 어떤 작품보다 현실을 보여 주지만, 동시에 현실에서 보이지 않는 것도 보여 주는 작품.
그게 내가 그리고 있는 풍속화였으니까. 그건 이 시대에도 마찬가지였다.
“제 그림이 많이 변했다니…… 무슨 소리신지 더 이야기해 주시면 안 돼요?”
내가 다 큰 성인이 되어서도 할아버지의 손자라는 사실은 변하지 않았다. 그 덕분일까. 할아버지는 내가 이렇게 질문하면 무척 친절하게 설명해 주시기 일쑤셨다.
“아직도 생각이 나는구나. 이 할애비가 윤성이 네 첫 작품을 보았을 때가.”
“를 말씀하시는 거예요?”
어머니를 처음 뵈었을 때의 느낌을 영감 삼아 그린 작품. 그게 였다.
사실 이 작품은 상대적으로 사람들에게 잘 알려진 것은 아니었다. 그도 그럴 게, 내가 본격적으로 사람들에게 알려진 것은 아무래도 베니스 비엔날레가 시작이었으니까.
하지만 나와 할아버지에게 는 의미가 남다른 작품이었다.
내 첫 행사이자, 할아버지와 함께한 유일한 전시인 가족전에 출품한 작품이었으니까.
어머니께서 무척이나 마음에 들어 하셨기 때문일까. 그 작품은 아직 어머니께서 잘 보관 중이셨다.
‘미인도를 그린 내 전생과 비교되는 작품이기에…… 개인적으로는 더 기억에 남는 그림이긴 하지.’

할아버지는 아련한 눈빛이 되셨다. 어딘가 과거의 추억을 기억하는 낌새가 역력하셨으니.
“네가 이 할애비 집에 와서 처음으로 그린 작품이 있단다. 그야말로 갓난아기였지만…… 그때부터 그 붓질은 심상치 않았지.”
“아, 그때…….”
그제야 난 할아버지께서 언제를 말씀하시는지 알아차렸다. 그날은 내가 이 시대에서 처음으로 붓을 잡은 날이었기에, 나 또한 기억이 무척이나 또렷했다.
“엉? 기억하는 게야?”
하지만 이를 알 리 없는 할아버지께서는 내 반응이 신기한 모양이셨다. 눈까지 동그랗게 뜨며 내게 물어보시는 것을 보니.
“그때 그야말로 말도 겨우 할 나이였는데도 기억한다고?”
“……아뇨. 그럴 리가요.”
여기서 기억한다고 말해봤자 이상한 아이 취급이나 받을 게 뻔했다. 그걸 아는 난 어색한 얼굴로 웃음만 지을 뿐이었다.
내 표정 덕분일까. 할아버지께서는 그에 대해 깊게 파고들진 않으셨다.
“어쨌든 그때의 네 작품은 그야말로 예스러운 동양화의 느낌이었지. 붓도 한 종류에만 익숙한 듯 보였고.”
예스러운 동양화. 할아버지께선 분명 내 전생을 모름에도 그렇게 표현하셨다.
그런 할아버지 앞에서 내가 기억한다고 말해 봤자 이상한 아이 취급을 받을 게 훤히 보였다. 그에 따라 난 당연히 어색한 미소만 지을 수밖에 없었으니.

“어…… 전 원래부터 제 그림대로 그렸는데요.”
이름이 신윤복과 신윤성이라는 차이가 있을 뿐. 난 늘 내 그림을 그렸다.

마치 내가 전생에 누구였는지 아시는 것처럼, 할아버지께서는 이전 생의 내 이름까지 입에 담으셨다.
“전 진짜 똑같이 그릴 수 있어요. 특히 신윤복이라면…….”

“네가 이전 동양화 대가들의 작품을 똑같이 그릴 수 있다고 해서 그림이 가진 혼도 똑같이 담을 수 있는 게 아니란다.”
“네에. 그렇죠.”
“흘흘. 이제 이 할애비 말을 다 이해한 게야?”
사실 할아버지의 말씀은 반만 맞았다. 난 진짜 혜원 신윤복이었기에 그 그림에 같은 힘을 담을 자신이 있었다.
하지만 이쯤 되니 어렴풋하게 감이 왔다.

입꼬리를 당겨 웃는 날 보며 할아버지께서는 지금까지의 진지한 표정을 바로 푸셨다.
언제 엄숙한 어른이셨냐는 듯 기분 좋은 얼굴을 하신 채 내 등을 툭툭 쓰다듬어 주셨다.
“녀석아. 미술 공부하는 것도 좋지만, 언제 이 할애비가 죽기 전에 같이 가족전을 다시 한번 하자꾸나.”
“가족전이요?”
“그래. 그때는 내 이름이 앞에 왔다만…… 이제는 네 이름이 앞에 오는 가족전이 될지도 모르겠구나.”
어린 시절에 할아버지와 한 가족전. 내 이번 생의 첫 전시회. 그걸 재연해 보는 것도 좋으리라.
내가 이에 대해 진지하게 고민하는 사이. 옆에선 뜻밖의 목소리가 들렸으니.
