19화 미묘한 웃음의 의미
“크흠. 내게 그림을 배우고 있는 아이라네.”
“오, 역시 그럴 줄 알았습니다.”
장훈은 고개를 끄덕였다. 그럴 것 같았다. 이 정도의 그림은 이민철 화백의 제자 정도가 아니라면 쉽지 않으리라.
“스타일이 묘하게 동양화 색채가 있는 게 선생님의 영향일 수도 있겠군요.”
“아, 그건 딱히 나 때문이 아닐 거야. 원래부터 그렇게 그리더군.”
“그럼 더 엄청나군요.”
장훈은 그 순간 머릿속에 아이디어가 번뜩였다. 생각해 보면 이민철 화백은 본인은 꺼려도 제자들의 전시는 적극적으로 돕는 인물이었다.
“선생님. 이 제자분을 좀 소개해 주십시오.”
“이 아이를?”
“예, 빠르면 빠를수록 좋을 것 같습니다.”
“으흠, 갑자기 그러는 이유가 있는 겐가?”
“아직 이런 그림이 나오지 않은 걸 보면…… 이 제자분은 전시회를 하지 않으셨죠?”
장훈은 이미 확신을 가지고 있었다.
이민철의 제자이면서 이런 스타일의 그림을 그릴 수 있는 이. 그런 이가 전시회를 열었다면 이 좁은 계통에서 그가 모를 리가 없었다.
“뭐…… 전시회를 한 적이 없긴 하지.”
민철은 턱을 쓰다듬으며 대답했다. 대답 속에서 어딘가 의뭉스러운 기색이 있었다. 그럼에도 장훈은 이를 눈치채지 못했다.
그만큼 흥분해 있었기에.
‘처음이라니. 이건 잡아야 한다.’
뭐든 처음은 귀한 법. 장훈은 재빠르게 입을 열었다.
“저희 아트리움에서 이분의 첫 전시회를 열어 드리고 싶습니다!”
“첫 전시회라…… 그럼 단독 초대전인 건가?”
단독 전시회 혹은 단독으로 미술관에서 작가를 초청하는 방식을 말함이었다.
떠보듯 물어보는 질문에도 장훈은 흔쾌히 대답했다.
“물론입니다. 그림 숫자만 충분하시다면, 단독도 고려해 볼 수 있습니다.”
장훈은 평소의 이민철 화백이라면 기뻐할 말이라고 여겼다.
한국 미술계의 거장으로서 그는 늘 제자들에게 기회를 주는 것을 주저하는 이가 아니었으니.
하지만 어째 반응이 장훈의 예상과 확연히 달랐다. 민철이 인상을 찌푸리며 난감하다는 기색을 보인 것이다.
“그건 좀 어려울 것 같은데.”
“예? 아니. 왜…….”
“아이의 보호자가 내가 아니거든.”
이게 대체 무슨 소리란 말인가. 갑자기 여기서 보호자가 왜 나오는 것인지.
의문이 가득한 장훈의 눈빛을 본 민철은 허허 웃음을 터뜨렸다. 그러더니 뜬금없는 질문을 던지는 것이 아닌가.
“자네. 이 그림을 그린 이가 몇 살일 것 같은가?”
갑작스럽게 던져진 질문. 이에 장훈은 당황했다. 물론 당황했음에도 대답을 착실히 하는 건 잊지 않았다.
“선생님의 제자이시고, 제가 아직 모르는 인물이시니…… 젊으시겠죠.”
“젊다라…….”
“예. 그렇다면, 20대 후반이나 30대 정도이실 것 같은데요.”
장훈의 추측은 일리가 있었다. 그보다 위의 나이라면 이미 전시회를 했을 가능성이 많았기에.
‘더 어리다는 건 말도 안 되고.’
섬세한 붓 터치며 색을 쓰는 기법까지. 20대 아래의 화가가 할 수 있는 그림이 아니었다.
20대 후반에서 30대면 무려 20년에 가깝게 범위를 설정한 것이었다. 그는 당연히 정답을 맞추리라 여겼다.
“아하하하하. 20대 후반에서 30대라니.”
그러나 민철은 장훈의 대답을 들은 뒤 더 크게 웃음을 터뜨렸다.
“그 나이였으면 내가 걱정을 안 하지. 보호자가 본인일 테니. 흘흘.”
“예?”
이해할 수 없는 소리를 하는 민철. 그런 그에게 장훈이 무언가를 더 물어보려고 하는 찰나였다.
“아. 그러고 보니 시간이 거의 다 되었군.”
민철은 시계를 한 번 바라본 뒤 장훈에게 씩 미소를 지었다. 그 미소 속에는 숨길 수 없는 장난기가 숨어 있었다.
“곧 아이가 올 테니 직접 한번 보는 게 어떻겠나?”
“오, 그래도 되는 겁니까?”
민철이 어떤 마음인지 모르는 장훈. 그는 제자를 친히 소개해 준다는 민철에게 급격히 감사한 마음이 들었다.
‘역시 작업실에 많이 찾아왔더니, 내게도 호감을 가지신 게 틀림없어.’
이대로만 가면 장훈은 원래의 목적을 이룰 수 있을 것 같았다. 민철의 작품으로 전시를 기획하기로 한 원래의 목표 말이다.
“친히 제자를 인사시켜 주신다니. 정말 감사드립니다.”
“뭐. 자네도 직접 화가를 보고 결정하는 것이 좋지 않겠나?. 흘흘.”
장훈이 희망에 부풀어 있는 사이. 민철은 그런 장훈을 보며 연신 미소만을 지을 뿐이었다.
이때까지만 해도 그는 알 수 없었다. 민철이 지은 미묘한 웃음의 의미를 말이다.

할아버지 댁에 자주 가게 되면서 변화가 있었다. 부모님께서 날 할아버지 댁에 두고 며칠 후에 찾아오시기도 한다는 것이다.
두 분 다 사회생활을 하며 바쁘시니. 이건 서로에게 좋은 일이었다.
“윤성아, 오늘도 할머니랑 할아버지 말씀 잘 들어야 한다.”
“네에.”
“아, 맞다. 그리고 다음 달부터는 윤성이도 유치원 간다고 꼭 말씀드리고.”
“그랬죠……. 곧 유치원 가죠.”
난 떨떠름해졌다. 유치원이라니. 이 나이에 다시 서당에 가야 한다는 소리를 들은 게 아니겠는가.
‘서당 졸업한 지가 언제인데.’
유치원과 서당이 미묘하게 다르다는 사실. 그건 물론 알고 있었다. 그래도 사람인란 게 그렇게 이성적이진 않았으니까.
서당을 다시 간다고 생각하니 미묘한 기분이 드는 건 어쩔 수 없었다. 이 나이에 다시 기초 교육 기관이라니.
“유치원 가게 되면 여길 자주 못 오게 되는 건가요?”
“아무래도 그렇겠지?”
그럴 줄 알았다. 역시나 예상과 한 치도 다를 것이 없는 답변이었다.
내 표정이 어두웠기 때문일까. 부모님께서 재빠르게 말을 더하셨다.
“그래도 최대한 자주 올 거야. 너무 걱정할 필요 없어.”
“맞아, 그리고 유치원 들어가면 윤성이 또래의 다른 친구들도 많이 만나게 될 거야.”
“그럼, 그럼. 새로운 친구들을 사귀게 되는 거지. 재미있을 것 같지 않니?”
또래 친구라. 그들의 중요함을 내 모르지 않았다. 그렇지만 지금의 나에겐 더 중요한 점이 있었으니.
“그곳에서도 그림을 그릴 수 있나요?”
내 질문에 두 분이 멈칫하셨다. 그러나 그건 아주 찰나였다.
“그럼. 미술 시간이 있으니까.”
“당연히 그림을 계속 그릴 수 있지. 친구들이랑 더 많이 그릴 수 있을 거야.”
부모님의 말씀에 조금 안심을 하고야 말했다.
이러니저러니 해도 내게 중요한 건 그림을 그릴 수 있는지 없는지가 문제였으니까.
‘서당과는 좀 다른가 보네.’
조선에서는 글공부만 했다. 그림은 따로 집에서만 배웠을 뿐. 서당에서 배울 수 있는 건 아니었으니.
그러나 여기서는 다른 모양이었다. 확실히 세월이 흐르며 교육하는 방식도 바뀐 듯 보였다.
내가 유치원에 대해 생각하는 사이. 날 할머니께서 반겨 주셨다.
평소와 달리 말이다.
“어? 할아버지는요?”
제자가 되기로 한 뒤, 늘 문 앞에서 날 맞아 주셨던 할아버지. 그분의 모습이 보이지 않았다. 당연히 의아해졌다.
내 질문에 할머니는 슬쩍 작업실 쪽을 바라보셨다.
“지금 작업실에 손님이 오셔서 말이다.”
“손님이요?”
“얼마 전부터 네 할아버지 그림을 전시장에 걸고 싶다고 찾아오는 사람이 있었거든.”
할머니의 말은 내 의문을 해소해 주기 충분했다. 다만 다른 문제가 발생했을 뿐.
“할머니, 그 손님이란 분이요. 오래 계실까요?”
“글쎄다. 아주 빨리 나올 것 같지는 않은데.”
할머니는 내 질문에 애매하다는 눈빛이 되셨다. 저렇게 말씀하시는 걸 보니 꼼짝없이 기다리게 생겼다.
“저…… 지금은 할아버지 방에 들어가면 안 되는 거죠?”
할아버지께 허락을 받은 그 순간부터 자유롭게 다녔던 곳이었다. 하지만 나도 눈치란 게 있었으니. 지금은 안 될 것 같았다.
“들어가야 할 이유가 있니?”
“제 화구가 다 거기 있어서요.”
할아버지의 방은 내 화구들을 보관하기 딱이었다. 온도며 습도며 모든 것이 완벽했으니까.
“응, 아마 네 할아버지가 곧 나가라고 하실 것 같기는 한데.”
“곧 나가라고 하실 거라고요?”
무슨 손님이길래 할머니의 반응이 저렇다는 말인가.
잠시 생각하시던 기색이 역력하던 할머니. 그녀는 내게 슬쩍 한 가지 제안을 했다.
“이렇게 하자. 윤성이가 이 음료랑 다과 좀 안에 가져다줄래?”
“제가요?”
“응, 그러면서 윤성이 필요한 물건 몇 개 가지고 나오면 좋을 듯해서.”
“우와, 그거 좋아요!”
할머니의 방법은 최고였다. 과연 연륜은 무시할 것이 아니었다.
난 할머니께서 챙겨 준 쟁반을 조심히 들었다.
아직 작은 내 몸을 배려해 주셨기 때문일까. 음료가 담겨 있는 컵과 다과용 접시가 모두 나무로 된 것들이었다.
‘조심. 조심.’
속으로 몇 번을 되뇌며 난 걸음을 옮겼다.
똑똑―
양손에 쟁반을 들었다. 손을 쓸 수 없는 나 대신 할머니께서 문을 두드려 주셨다.
“들어와.”
안쪽에서 할아버지의 말소리가 들렸다.
“그럼 윤성아. 손님에게는 인사 잘해야 한다.”
“네에.”
그 말을 끝으로 조심스럽게 문을 열고 들어간 곳. 할아버지의 작업실 한쪽에 있는 탁자엔 두 사람이 앉아 있었다.
‘저 사람이 손님이신가 보네.’
할아버지의 맞은편에 있는 사람은 중년의 남자였다. 그는 단정한 복장을 한 채 날 바라보고 있었다.
“안녕하세요.”
나와 그 사람의 눈이 마주쳤기 때문일까. 할아버지께서는 날 그 손님에게 소개를 하셨다.
“이쪽은 내 손자일세.”
“아, 손자분이셨군요. 무척 영특하게 생기셨네요.”
딱 봐도 알 수 있었다. 상대는 할아버지의 눈치를 살피는 것으로 보였다.
덕분에 어떤 손님인지 깨달았다. 상대는 뭔가 할아버지에게 바라는 바가 있는 사람이란 걸.
하지만 그건 지금의 내게 중요한 바는 아니었다. 그렇기에 난 다과를 들고 들어온 용건을 꺼냈다.
“할아버지, 할머니가 이거 가져다드리랬어요.”
“꽤 무거웠을 텐데. 고맙구나.”
할아버지는 내 손에서 쟁반을 들어 올리셨다. 두 손이 좀 가벼워지자 난 진짜 여기 온 이유를 드러냈다.
“저기 있는 화구들 좀 가져가도 돼요?”
“화구? 어떤 걸 말하는 게냐?”
“수채화용 물감이랑 붓들이요.”
“다 가져가려고?”
“일단 2호랑 3호 그리고 10호랑 16호는 가져가야 할 것 같아요.”
수채화용 붓에는 크기별로 호수가 붙어 있었다. 처음에는 적응하지 못했던 나다. 그러나 이젠 익숙하게 숫자를 말할 수 있었다.
“우리 윤성이. 또 뭘 그리려고 하는 거구나.”
“네에.”
내 대답이 마음에 드신 듯 할아버지께서는 웃음을 터뜨리셨다. 그러더니 내게 붓을 챙겨 주기까지 하셨다.
“그래, 그래. 여기 가져가거라.”
“감사합니다. 할아버지.”
허락을 받은 내가 주섬주섬 붓을 챙기는 사이. 뒤쪽에서 말소리가 들려왔다.
“손자분이 그림을 그리시나 보네요.”
“그렇다네. 퍽 잘 그리지. 자네도 보지 않았나.”
“네? 제가요?”
상대방은 어리둥절한 기색이었다. 그 순간 난 알 수 있었다. 저건 할아버지가 날 놀릴 때 자주 써먹는 수법이었다.
아니나 다를까 어딘가 여유로운 할아버지의 목소리가 들려왔다.
“방금 이 그림을 보고 자네가 한 말 기억 안 나나?”
“오랜만에 동양적인 매력을 제대로 그려내는 분이 나왔다고…… 설마.”
