“거물급들?”
어떤 사람들을 말하는지 알 수 없었다. 그렇기에 다시 물어보는 나를 향해 클리프는 예시를 들어주었다.
“응. 예를 들면 몇억 달러 클럽이라던가 하는 화가들 말이야. 너네도 있지 않아?”
“아. 그런 거물들…… 그러고 보니 들어는 본 것 같네.”
그림 가격이 1억 원 이상인 화가들, 혹은 10억 원. 그걸 넘어 100억 원 이상인 화가들만 따로 묶어서 부르기도 했다.
‘듣기론 스포츠에서 온 단어라고 하던데…….’
몇억 클럽이니 하는 건 다 그쪽에서 유래된 단어라고 들었다. 나보고도 300만 달러 클럽이라나 뭐라나.
내가 잠시 딴생각을 하는 사이. 클리프는 반응 없는 내 어깨까지 톡톡 건드리며, 질문을 던졌다.
“야야. 내 말 듣고 있는 거야?”
“……그렇게 안 쳐도 다 듣고 있어.”
“물 들어올 때 노 저으랬다고. 원래 이럴 때 너도 뭔가 더 하지 않나?”
“뭘 해야 하는데?”
“뭔진 내가 모르지! 그래도 이렇게 태연하게 수업을 들으러 가는 건 아니라고 본다.”
그는 내 앞길을 가리키며 힘 있게 외쳤다. 그의 손가락 끝에는 본관이 있었다. 내가 오늘 들어야 하는 수업이 있는 장소였다.
“저기 들어가는 것보다 더 확실하게 네가 해야 할 일이 있을 거야!”
당당하게 수업을 빠지자는 소리를 하는 필립이었다. 괜히 진지하게 이야기를 들은 듯해 어이없는 기분마저 들었다.
클리프에게는 안타까운 일이겠지만, 난 당분간은 그가 싫어하는 모범생이 되어야 했다.
“오늘은 진짜 수업 들으러 가야 하는 것 맞아.”
“너 말이야…… 이런 상황에서도 수업이라니.”
“수업을 잘 들어야 교환 학생도 순조롭게 갈 수 있다고 알고 있거든.”
내가 이번 학기 최대한 성실하게 학교 수업을 듣겠다고 결심한 이유. 그건 무척이나 간단했다.
다음 학기 원하는 곳으로 최대한 지원을 많이 받고 교환 학생에 가고 싶기 때문이었으니.
내 말을 들은 그의 눈동자가 동그랗게 변했다. 그러더니 신기하다는 어조로 입을 열었다.
“신. 너 진짜 교환 학생 가게?”
“그럼 내가 거짓말하는 줄 알았어?”
“아니. 난 또 유학생이 다시 교환 학생을 가는 게 워낙 드물어서 그렇지.”
그건 사실이었다. 이미 모국을 떠나 유학 생활을 하러 온 학생. 그런 유학생이 다시 또 해외를 가는 경우는 많지 않았다.
정확하게는 거의 없다고 해도 과언이 아니었다. 내가 관심을 가질 때 이미 그런 소리들을 많이 들었으니까.
하지만 난 달랐다. 전생에 있었던 역마살이 이번 내 사주에도 있는 모양인지. 난 해외를 가는 걸 전혀 꺼리지 않았기에.
‘교환 학생으로 유럽을 가 보는 건 더 좋지. 그곳에서도 뭔가 배워 볼 수 있을 테니까.’
같은 시대에 있는 나라였지만, 한국과 미국은 참으로 달랐다. 아마 내가 갈 유럽의 그 나라 또한 지금까지 겪은 나라들과는 많이 다르리라.
이런 내 심정을 아는지 모르는지. 클리프는 같은 미대생으로서 입장을 이야기하고 있었다.
“솔직히 안 그래도 미대 애들이 교환 학생 가는 경우는 잘 없잖아?”
“그렇긴 하지. 다들 교환 학생보다는 졸업 작품을 더 우선시하려고 하는 편이니까.”
미대가 다른 학부의 학생들과 다른 결정적인 차이. 그건 바로 졸업 작품에 있었다.
하루 이틀이 아닌 몇 달에서 길게는 1년도 넘게 갈아 넣어야만 하는 작품. 그게 미대생들의 졸업 작품이었다.
‘졸업 작품이 사회에 나가기 전, 본인의 얼굴이 되는 경우가 많으니까 그런 거겠지.’
그러나 난 이 경우에도 별로 해당이 되지 않았다. 내 졸업 작품. 그거야 그때 내가 그리고 싶은 걸 그리면 된다고 생각했으니까.
만약 교수님께서 졸업시켜 주지 않으면, 그건 그때 가서 고민해 보면 되는 일 아니겠는가.
이런 내가 졸업 작품 때문에 하고 싶은 교환 학생을 안 할 리가.
“그러니까 진짜 당분간은 수업 잘 들어야 해. 과제도 잘해야 하고…… 하여튼 엄청 성실하게 학교생활 할 거야.”
“허.”
클리프는 내 대답에 좀 실망한 기색이었다. 본인이 뭔가 다른 대답을 원했음에도 내가 따라주지 않았으니.
아쉬워하는 친구를 위해 난 은근슬쩍 다른 실마리를 던져 주기로 했다.
저래 보여도 내 전시회에 관심 가져 주는 고마운 친구 아니겠는가.
그런 친구를 위해서 이 정도의 힌트를 주는 건 문제 없으리라.
“뭐. 그 학교생활도 한 달 뒤에는 또 모르겠지만.”
“그게 무슨 소리야?”
역시나 내가 말하자마자 바로 고개를 돌리는 클리프였다. 그는 다시 두 눈빛을 초롱초롱하게 빛내며 날 바라보았다.
“중간고사 기간 말이야. 그때 잠시 짬을 내서 한국에 가야 할 수도 있거든.”
“한국에?”
원래 어지간해서는 학기 중에 다시 한국에 돌아가진 않는다. 돈이 많이 드는 것도 사실이지만, 진짜 이유는 내 체력 때문이었다.
아무리 기술이 좋아져서 먼 거리를 몇 시간이면 이동할 수 있다곤 하지만 그뿐. 사람인 내가 피곤한 건 매한가지였으니까.
“응. 거기서 좀 해야 할 일이 생겨서.”
그러나 반드시 들어가야 하는 이유가 있다면 이야기가 달랐다. 그럼 약간의 피곤함 정도는 감수하고 가야 하지 않겠는가.
‘필립에게 이번에는 좋은 비행기 자리 부탁해야겠어.’
먼 비행시간은 피곤하지만, 좌석이 좋으면, 그나마 나았으니. 난 일등석을 예약해 달라고 말할 작정이었다.
“그래서. 거기서 끝 아니지? 그 해야 할 일이 뭔데?”
“그건…… 수업 끝나고 말해 줄지 고민해 볼게. 이제 강의실 다 왔잖아?”
“……무슨 예고편 틀어 주는 방송국도 아니고.”
투덜거리는 클리프. 그런 친구를 보며 난 태연하게 수업을 위한 준비를 시작했다.
한국이고 뭐고, 일단 지금 이 순간 가장 중요한 건 내 눈앞의 전공 수업이었으니까.

인천 국제공항. 그곳에서 민철은 아는 지인들을 마중하기 위해 나와 있었다.
혹시나 놓칠까 싶어 눈을 부릅뜨고 있던 민철. 그러나 전혀 그럴 필요가 없었다.
도란도란 이야기를 나누는 백인과 흑인의 조화. 그건 한국의 인천 국제공항에서는 꽤 드문 모습이었으니까.
“크으. 여기가 바로 한국이구만.”
“곳곳에 영어 게시판도 있어서 딱히 불편한 거 없을 수도 있겠는데요?”
“그래도 현지인이랑 같이 다니는 것과 그렇지 않은 건 다르지.”
알렉스와 제임스. 두 사람은 이전에 언뜻 말한 대로 한국에 왔다. 그런 두 사람을 발견한 민철은 손을 들어 그들을 맞이했다.
“여기!”
“오. 저기 있구만.”
“얼른 가죠. 많이 기다리셨을 수도 있을 것 같은데.”
오랜만에 만난 세 사람. 그들은 일단 공항을 빠져나가기 위해 움직이는 중이었다.
“다들 한국에는 처음 오는 건가?”
“난 처음이네. 홍콩이나 도쿄는 가 봤는데…… 은근히 서울은 올 기회가 없더라고.”
“저도 비슷합니다. 오히려 북경은 가 본 기억이 있네요.”
국제도시라고 불리는 서울. 하지만 아직 화가들에게는 홍콩이나 도쿄보다는 낯선 곳이었다.
“솔직히 이번도 자네가 그렇게 오라고, 오라고 하지 않았으면, 오기 힘들었지.”
놀리듯 입을 여는 알렉스의 말에 민철은 어이없다는 눈빛이 되어 맞받아쳤다.
“아니, 내가 또 뭘 오라고, 오라고 했다고…….”
“그 정도면 오라고 한 거지. 아니 그런가?”
“전…… 코멘트 하지 않겠습니다. 두 분이 정하시면 알려 주세요.”
제임스는 현명했다. 양쪽 다 본인들 의견에 한 고집하는 두 사람 사이에서 굳이 고통받고 싶은 마음은 없었으니까.
“이 와중에도 말투 참 정중한 거 보게.”
“그게 제임스의 매력 아니겠나. 나랑 달리 아주 정석적인 영어를 하지. 후후.”
알렉스의 말에 민철은 은근히 자부심을 섞어 중얼거렸다.
“나도 충분히 정석적인 영어를 하네만…….”
그의 나이에 이 정도로 영어를 구사하는 한국인은 많지 않았다.
자유자재로 미국인들과 의사소통을 할 수 있다는 것. 그 자체만으로도 그는 스스로의 영어 실력에 꽤 당당했으니까.
하지만 알렉스는 냉정했다.
“자네는 발음 나쁜 교과서적 언어라고 할 수 있지. 어딘가 옛날 책에나 나올 것 같은 영어라고 할까.”
“……그 옛날 책으로 배웠으니 어쩔 수 없지.”
그의 시대는 오로지 책으로만 영어를 배울 수 있는 시기였다. 지금처럼 너트뷰가 잘 방달 되어 있지도, SNS가 활발하지도 않았으니까.
영어 학습지나 이런 것들도 감히 지금과 비교할 수 없었다. 요즘에는 잘 보지도 않는다는 영문법부터 많이 공부한 세대 아닌가.
“누가 뭐래나? 그냥 영어 이야기를 하길래 말했을 뿐이네만.”
“아이고. 이 미국인이 외국인을 핍박하는구만. 그래.”
“아이고. 이 한국인이 멀리서 온 손님을 푸대접하는구만. 그래.”
“두분 다 진짜…… 어휴.”
인종이 모두 다른 세 사람이었다. 하나는 백인이요, 하나는 흑인이고 나머지는 황인이었으니까.
그 뿐만이 아니었다. 나이도 다르고, 그림을 그리는 스타일들도 다른 셋이었다.
자라 온 환경부터 시작해 이들은 공통점보다는 차이점이 큰 사람들이었다. 그러나 이 셋은 첫 만남 이후로 정말 빠른 속도로 친해질 수 있었다.
제자와 아들, 그리고 손자들이 대를 이어 미술을 한다는 공통점 때문일까. 예상보다 훨씬 더 친해질 수 있었다.
한참을 서로 놀리듯 대화를 하던 그들. 하지만 나이 때문일까. 이야기 좀 했다고 몸에서 신호를 보내왔다.
“얼른 단골이라는 그 맛집부터 가세나. 뱃가죽이 등에 달라붙을 것 같네.”
“아무리 봐도 그 정도의 몸매는 아니네만…….”
오동통한 뱃살을 바라보며 민철은 놀림을 멈추지 않았다. 그러나 알렉스는 이미 진지했다. 그는 진짜로 배가 고팠으니까.
“쓰읍. 말이 그렇다는 거지. 배가 고픈 건 사실이네만?”
원래 배고플 때는 개도 건드리면 안 되는 법. 이를 잘 아는 민철은 더 시비를 거는 대신 식사에 대해 입을 열었다.
“그럴 줄 알고 이미 예약해 놓았으니, 얼른 가세나. 원래 한국엔 이런 말도 있거든. 금강산도 식후경이라고.”
“큼강…… 발음 참 어렵구만. 그게 뭔데?”
“뭐. 간단하게 말하면 식사를 잘하고 나서야 좋은 풍경도 눈에 들어온다는 말이지.”
“맞는 말이네요. 배가 고프면 보이던 것도 안 보이니까요.”
“그러니 얼른 가세나. 흘흘.”
그렇게 그들은 빠르게 움직였다. 민철이 오래전부터 종종 다니던 그 단골집으로 말이다.

그들이 도착한 식당은 샤브샤브 집이었다. 룸도 있는 데다 각자의 자리에 1인으로 된 냄비가 놓여 있어서 고급스러움을 더했다.
예약했다는 말이 진짜인 듯, 민철 일행은 도착하자마자 기다렸다는 듯이 차려지는 상을 볼 수 있었다.
“오. 이전에 이런 요리 본 적 있어.”
준비된 샤브샤브를 보며 알렉스는 두 눈을 반짝였다. 그런 그를 향해 민철은 일단 반쯤 가이드하는 입장으로서 친절하게 설명을 시작했다.
“육수만 끓은 후에는 원하는 대로 넣어서 먹는 건데…… 처음은 내가 하는 걸 보고 먹는 게 좋을걸?”
다들 해외를 잘 돌아다녔기 때문일까. 한국인이 아닌 두 사람도 딱히 가리는 것 없이 잘 먹는 중이었다.
어느 정도 배가 차자 그들은 그제야 본격적인 대화를 하기에 이르렀다.
“근데 표 못 얻었다고 하지 않았어?”
“쿨럭.”
핵심을 찌르는 알렉스 유니언. 그의 말에 가만히 샤브샤브의 국물을 입에 넣던 민철은 기침이 절로 튀어 나왔다.
“분명 예약 실패했다고 들었는데…… 오늘 갈 수 있다니. 그게 뭔 소리야?”
민철은 바로 직전에 식사 후 전시회를 보러 가자고 했다.

“안 그래도 여기서 밥만 먹고 보러 가려고 했지.”
