미리부터 입장권을 준비한 일행들. 그렇기에 그들은 주변을 둘러볼 여유가 있었다.
“정말로 시간별로 입장을 제한하는 모양이네.”
“그러게요. 밖에서 기다리는 사람도 꽤나 많은데요?”
“평일에도 이럴 정도면…… 인기 있는 전시관이긴 하군.”
이들이 한평생 본 전시관이 몇인가. 그 덕분에 자연스럽게 입구에 들어서자마자 바로 평가부터 나왔다.
“어? 이건 뭔가?”
“이거 큐알 찍으면 간단한 안내를 같이 들을 수 있는 것 같은데요.”
“오호라…… 이런 건 한번 해 봐야지.”
나름대로 신문물에 대한 재미도 느낀 그들이었다. 늘 전시관에서 전시만 했지, 이렇게 지인들과 둘러보는 건 오랜만이기에 상당히 들뜬 기색이 역력했다.
평일 대낮에 외국인과 한국인이 함께 하는 일행은 독특한 조합이었다. 그 덕분일까. 이들은 직원의 친절한 설명도 들을 수 있었다.
“이걸 누르시면 영어 안내를 들을 수 있습니다.”
“오. 감사합니다. 여긴 직원들도 다들 영어 잘하시는군요.”
그들이 있는 장소는 엄연히 한국이었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 직원들은 영어로 의사소통하는 데 무리가 없었다.
원어민인 이들의 귀에도 전혀 어색하지 않은 영어였으니까.
자연스럽게 감탄사가 나온 외국인들을 향해 칭찬을 들은 해당 직원은 빙그레 미소를 지었다.
“아무래도 최근에 외국인도 많은 편이라서요.”
“외국인이라면…… 한국인이 아닌 사람들도 많이 오나 보죠?”
“예. 최근 ‘올해의 작가전’ 때문인지, 외국 사람들이 평소보다 더 늘어난 편이긴 합니다.”
직원의 말마따나 정말로 한국인으로 보이지 않는 사람들도 많았다. 심지어 그들은 낯선 언어를 사용 중이었다.
“……저 말 한국어 아니지?”
“아닌 것 같은데요.”
애매한 알렉스와 제임스의 말에 확답을 준 건 민철이었다. 그는 흘끔 옆을 바라본 후 입을 열었다.
“중국어네. 딱 들어 보니.”
“뭐야. 이 정도면 거의 MoMA 맞잖아. 외국인들도 상당수 보이는데.”
“요즘이 유난히 많은 거야…… 아무래도 평소는 아직 그 정도는 아닌 것 같은데.”
민철은 주변을 둘러보며 턱을 쓰다듬었다. 그의 생각보다도 사람들이 확실히 많이 늘어난 것이 보였으니까.
그런 냉정한 민철의 평가에 알렉스를 고개를 절레절레 저었다.
“그건 자네가 한국인이라 객관적이지 못해서 그러는 걸 수도 있어. 평일에 이 정도면 오히려 어지간한 뉴욕에 있는 현대 미술관보다 사람이 많은 거야.”
“그런가?”
“예. 그 말씀이 맞습니다. 뉴욕에서 어지간한 미술관도 평일 낮에 이 정도로 사람이 있지는 않거든요.”
“그냥 이번 전시회가 유난히 인기가 많은 것 같은데…….”
“쯧쯧. 이 사람이 우리보다도 더 보는 눈이 없구만? 원래 괜찮은 곳일 게 분명하다는데도 그러네.”
민철을 타박하며 그들은 다시 발걸음을 옮겼다. 신문물과 함께 직원의 안내도 잘 받았으니. 이제 본격적으로 전시회를 관람할 차례였다.
“일단 첫 공간은 시원시원하네.”
그들의 발걸음이 닿는 첫 공간. 거기엔 탁 트인 실내 전시가 그들을 맞이했다.
전시회의 구성은 심혈을 기울인 게 눈에 보였다. 입구에서부터 관람객의 동선에 따라 작품을 잘 볼 수 있도록 꾸며 놓았으니까.
그렇기에 그들도 오래간만에 작품을 순수한 마음으로 즐길 수 있었다.
“이거 좀 재미있는 작품이긴 한데요?”
“뭐. 이런 거야 요즘 애들이 많이 하는 스타일이지.”
“그래도 이건 나름 최신의 트렌드를 잘 반영한 느낌인데요.”
“‘올해의 작가상’을 뽑는다고 하니, 최근 흐름을 반영한 이런 작품도 나오는구만.”
후배들의 작품을 향해 무한대로 긍정적인 에너지를 가지고 보는 제임스. 그리고 나름대로 냉정하게 품평회를 하며 관람하는 알렉스였다.
“원래 한국 화가들도 이런 트렌드에 민감하다네. 흘흘.”
그런 두 외국인의 사이에서 민철은 이런저런 말을 더하는 중이었다. 그렇게 세 사람이 도란도란 작게 의견을 주고받으며 진지하게 작품을 관람하고 있었다.
그런 식으로 잠시 둘러보던 그들. 그런 그들의 입에서 거의 동시에 한 단어가 튀어나왔으니.
“오. 이거겠다.”
“이거일 것 같은데요?”
“크흠. 이거…….”
셋의 입에서 같이 튀어나온 한 단어.
‘이것.’
같이 말을 하고 나자 그들은 서로 눈빛을 교환했다. 그 눈빛 속에는 일정 부분 웃음기까지 담겨 있었다.
“크크.”
“쉿. 너무 크게 웃지 말게나.”
“나도 전시회 매너 정도는 아는 사람이야.”
들릴 듯 말 듯 소곤거리는 이들. 그러나 그 속에도 웃음기는 빠지지 않았다.
이렇게나 똑같은 타이밍에 같은 말을 하다니. 이 자체가 이미 웃겼으니 어쩔 수 없는 일이었다.
“뭐야. 다들 보는 눈이 이렇게 비슷한 거야?”
“보는 눈이 비슷하다기보단…… 이거만 여기서 느낌이 좀 다르네요.”
“크흠.”
어이없다는 알렉스의 말에 대답하는 제임스. 그런 두 사람의 반응에 민철은 연신 헛기침만 했다.
그도 그럴 게 민철 또한 이번 작품을 직접 본 건 지금이 처음이었기에, 이 정도일 줄 몰랐기 때문이었다.
이렇게나 혼자 튀는 작품이라니. 이러면 내기를 하자고 자신만만하게 말한 그가 뭐가 된다는 말인가.
민철이 연속해서 민망함을 감추기 위해 헛기침을 하는 사이에도 제임스의 말은 계속되었다.
“솔직히 여기 있는 작품들과 차이가 좀 느껴지는 편이라…….”
“그러게나 말이야. 이 정도면 너무 알아보기 쉬운 것 아닌가? 어지간한 사람이라면 다 알아볼 것 같은데.”
오죽하면 알렉스가 이런 말까지 할 정도였다. 그런 지인의 말에 민철은 재빠르게 부정했다.
“……그 정도는 아닐 걸세. 우린 다들 그림 그리는 사람들이니 알아본 것이고.”
“그 정도가 맞을 것 같은데? 봐 봐. 이 근처만 사람들이 몰린 것 보게.”
하지만 민철의 어색한 변명 따윈 알렉스에게 통하지 않았다. 상당히 냉정한 성격답게 그는 논리적으로 의견을 전달했다.
“커험. 험.”
“근데…… 이러면 내기가 어려운 것 아닌가?”
눈앞에 있는 작품이 누구의 것인지 그들은 입 밖에 내지 않았다. 하지만 이 정도면 여기 있는 셋은 확실히 알고 있다는 소리였다.
이미 다들 말하지 않아도 서로 알지 않는가. 지금 그들이 동시에 신윤성 작가의 작품을 알아봤다는 사실을 말이다.
내기 중 하나는 셋 중 ‘누가 신윤성 작가의 작품을 알아보느냐’였다. 하지만 이렇게 되면 그 내기는 아무런 의미가 없었다.
다들 너무도 확실하게 신윤성 화가의 작품을 알아차렸기에.
‘이건 뭐…… 거의 알아봐 달라고 호소하는 수준이니. 원.’
그들 정도의 시선에 이건 너무 대놓고 알려 주는 것이었다. 작가명과 각종 도록을 가리면 뭐 하는가. 이 정도로 수준 차이가 난다면 모르려고 해도 모를 수가 없었다.
알렉스의 회의적인 반응에 민철은 내기의 내용을 상기시켰다. 그들의 내기는 엄밀히 따지면 신윤성 작가의 작품을 알아내는 것만은 아니었기에.
“아니지. 그게 내기의 전부는 아니지 않나. 아직 우승자를 고르는 일이 남았으니까.”
“아…… 그러고 보니, ‘올해의 작가상’에는 신윤성 작가가 빠지는 거지.”

“에이. 쉽게 가나 했더니만…….”
“세상에 원래 너무 쉬운 건 없는 게 아니겠나.”
민철의 말에 잠시 입을 삐죽이던 알렉스는 문득 생각났다는 듯 질문을 던졌다.
“헌데, 원래 여기에 신 작가도 나올 뻔했다고 하지 않았나?”
“했지. 그런데 얘가 안 하겠다고 했거든.”
“뭐…… 이 정도면 안 하겠다고 한 것도 이해가 되는데.”
“흘흘. 난 할아버지로서 노코멘트하겠네.”
민철의 태연한 말에 알렉스는 슬쩍 혀를 찼다. 아닌 척하면서 손자를 자랑스러워하는 게 너무도 눈에 훤하게 보였으니까. 그걸 본 알렉스는 괜히 툴툴거리며 말을 돌렸다.
“쳇. 그렇게 나온다 이거지? 그럼 우리 남은 전시는 다들 말없이 각자 골라 보자고. 그 우승자를 말이야.”
“나야 좋지. 흘흘.”
“뭐…… 저도 그럼 조용히 혼자 선택해 보겠습니다.”
이 뒤에는 거의 말없이 전시회만 관람한 이들이었다. 그 덕분일까. 나름 다양한 작품들이 전시되어 있었음에도 관람은 생각보다 금방 끝이 났다.
“생각보다 전시회가 짧구만.”
“뭐. 아쉬우면 다른 곳을 보러 가세나. 다른 섹션에는 상설 전시도 있으니.”
국립 현대 미술관은 기획전만 하지 않았다. 상설 전시도 당연히 있었다. 아쉬워하는 이들을 위해 민철이 이야기한 건 이 상설 전시였다.
“이왕 온 것 그것도 좋겠군.”
“그럼…… 투표만 하고 가시죠.”
입장권에 붙어 있는 투표용지. 그걸 손으로 팔락거리며 흔드는 제임스였다.
“당연히 투표는 해야지. 우리 각자의 내기를 위해서라도.”
원래 이런 내기는 한 번 하기로 했으면, 끝을 봐야 하는 법. 그렇기에 알렉스도 투표에 적극적으로 참여할 뜻을 밝혔다.
“그리고 전…… 저기도 한 번 들려 보고 싶은데요. 괜찮으실까요?”
“저기라니?”
제임스의 손가락이 가리키는 그곳. 그쪽으로 눈길을 돌린 알렉스였다. 그리고 거기엔 익히 알고 있는 물건들이 놓여 있었다.
“기념품?”
전시회장에 가면 종종 볼 수 있는 기념품들. 해당 전시 관련 물품을 파는 자그마한 가게가 그들의 눈에 들어왔다.
“예. 신윤성 작가의 작품과 관련된 기념품을 하나 사는 것도 좋을 것 같아서요.”
그들이 여기 이렇게 같이 온 이유가 뭔가. 바로 민철의 손자인 신윤성 작가 때문이 아닌가.
그렇다면 그걸 기념해 물건을 하나 장만하는 것도 괜찮으리라. 제임스의 말을 가만히 듣던 알렉스. 그는 갑자기 빙그레 미소를 지으며 한 가지 아이디어를 냈다.
“으흠. 그러고 보니 내가 좀 좋은 생각이 났네만.”
“좋은 생각이요?”
“우리 각자 우승자로 고른 작가들의 기념품. 그걸 사는 게 어떻겠는가.”
“화가들의 기념품을 말씀하시는 건가요?”
“그래. ‘올해의 작가상’이 뽑혔을 때, 그걸 딱! 보여 주는 거지.”
“오호.”
“그럼 나중에 누굴 골랐는지 발뺌할 일도 없을 테고…… 아주 좋을 것 같은데, 어떤가.”
역시 세월의 힘은 무시할 수 없었다. 가만히 있던 알렉스가 이런 생각을 내놓을 줄이야.
“그거 좋네요. 한번 가서 골라 보죠.”
“나도 좋다고 여기네만, 그럼 어서 가서 골라 봐야겠네.”
원래 기념품 가게엔 잘 들리지 않은 할아버지들. 그런 그들이 단번에 그쪽으로 발길을 돌린 이유였다.

국립 현대 미술관에서 전시회가 진행 중이긴 하지만 그건 한국에서의 일이었다.
지금 내게 더 중요한 건 따로 있었으니. 바로 에일대에서 원활하게 수업을 듣는 것. 여기서 한 발자국 더 나아가면 학교생활을 최대한 알차게 보내는 것 정도가 있으리라.
이론적으론 알고 있었다. 인맥 하면 아이비리그고, 그중 에일대는 커뮤니티가 잘 되어 있는 학교 중 하나였으니까.
그렇지만 솔직히 난 스스로에게는 해당 사항이 없다고 여겼다. 수업을 제외하곤 작업실과 전시회만 들락거리는 내게 인맥은 상대적으로 후순위였기에.
하지만 이 정도의 일이 벌어진다면 이야기가 달라지리라.
“안녕하십니까!”
어지간해서는 위아래인 선후배 관계보단 수평적인 동료로서 서로를 바라보는 것. 그게 에일대 학생들에게 일반적이었다.
그런 와중에 깍듯하고 정중하게 내게 인사하는 학생들이라니. 이 미국에선 낯선 광경일 수밖에 없었다.
“누구…….”
사람이 낯선 걸 보면 저도 모르게 경계하는 법. 나 또한 당연히 두 눈을 가늘게 뜨며 그들을 살펴보았다.
