201화 제 걸 여러분들이 열겠다고요?
같은 수업을 듣긴 했지만, 우리는 낯선 관계였다. 그렇기에 난 일단 그들이 누구인지부터 물어봤다.
내 조심스러운 질문에 그들은 서로 얼굴을 마주 보았다. 그러더니 실수를 눈치챈 듯 앞다퉈 사과부터 시작했다.
“앗. 그러고 보니 저희의 소개를 하지 않았네요.”
“죄송합니다. 저희가 너무 잘 알아서 이런 실수를…….”
민망한 기색으로 머리를 긁적이던 두 사람. 그들은 그제야 본인들의 정체를 입에 담았다.
“저희는 YALCS라는 동아리예요.”
“맞아요. 우리 전부 거기 소속이거든요.”
“동아리?”
처음에는 YALCS가 뭔가 싶었다. 그런데 알고 보니 에일대에 있는 수많은 학생 모임들 중 하나인 모양이었다.
에일대는 입학 전부터 학생 커뮤니티가 유명한 대학이었다. 그만큼 각종 동아리가 많다나 뭐라나. 내가 여기 입학한다고 했을 때, 동아리는 꼭 들어 보라고 이야기한 사람들까지 있었을 정도였으니까.
사실 꼭 인맥을 위해서가 아니라고 해도 동아리는 충분히 매력적이었다. 비슷한 또래들이 모여 유사한 관심사를 공유하는 것. 분명 재미있고 좋았으리라.
하지만 지금의 내게 맞는 건 아니었다. 동아리 활동을 가장 활발하게 할 수 있는 시기. 그 때가 난 이미 지난 상황이었기에.
“어…… 미안한데요, 전 1학년이 아니라 이제 2학년이거든요.”
보통 동아리를 선택하는 건 아무래도 신입생인 1학년이었다.
대학교에 막 들어왔기에 가장 열정이 넘치는 시기. 동시에 전공 수업이 본격적으로 들어가지 않는 만큼 가장 동아리 활동을 할 수 있는 시간이 많은 때. 그게 바로 신입생인 1학년이었으니까.
그러나 난 이미 그 시기를 지난 상태였다. 이제 난 해가 바뀌어 2학년인 상태였다.
과거 1학년일 당시 난 동아리보다는 개인 활동을 택했다. 그 결과 수많은 것들을 얻을 수 있었다.
내가 동아리 활동을 했다면, 아트 콜라보부터 시작해 각종 전시회 및 행사들까지. 그걸 다 할 수는 없었을 테니.
그 때문일까.
난 지금도 동아리가 없는 것에 대해 딱히 아쉽진 않았다. 에일대의 최대 장점이라고 불리는 학생 커뮤니티 활동을 하지 못했음에도.
이런 내 생각을 아는지 모르는지. 그들은 계속 조심스러운 태도로 내게 말을 걸었다. 물론 이상할 정도로 부담스럽게 눈빛을 빛내면서 말이다.
“동아리 가입을 원하는 건 아닙니다!”
“맞아요. 저희가 감히 그럴 수는 없죠.”
‘어째…… 단어의 선택이 좀 이상한데?’
에일대 학생들끼리의 관계는 선후배보다는 같은 길을 가는 동료라는 느낌이 강했다. 그건 한참 위의 선배라고 해서 변하는 건 아니었으니.
그런데 ‘감히’라니? 그들의 어투는 동료보다는 뭔가 다른 존재를 향해서 말하는 것으로 보였다.
하지만 난 그 의문 대신 다른 걸 먼저 질문했다. 동아리 가입을 권유하는 것이 아니라면 이들이 내게 말을 걸 필요도 없다고 여겼기에.
“동아리에 가입하라는 게 아니면…… 뭔데요?”
“실은…… 저희가 축제 때 작은 카페를 하나 하려고 하거든요.”
9월 학기 시작 후 얼마 지나지 않으면 미국의 대학에서는 축제가 벌어졌다. 학교 내 동아리라면 그 축제에 다들 한 발씩 걸친다고 알고 있었다. 이들이 말하는 건 그 축제 때 각 동아리에서 하는 활동이리라.
“축제 때 하는 카페요?”
몇몇 동아리에서는 축제 때 종종 카페나 음식점을 열기도 했다. 전년도의 나 또한 그걸 목격했다. 미국의 대학 축제는 한국 못지않게 크게 열리곤 했으니.
그런데 그걸 왜 내게 말한다는 말인가. 동아리에서 카페를 하고 싶으면 그 동아리 내에서 협의하면 될 일을.
내가 속으로 의문을 품는 사이에도 그들의 말은 계속되었다.
“예. 근데 아무래도…… 이걸 이야기드리고 하는 게 좋을 것 같아서요.”
“맞아요. 한국은 어떤지 모르겠지만, 저희는 당사자가 모르면 안 된다고 생각했거든요.”
더더욱 알 수 없는 말이었다. 당사자라니. 내가 동아리에 가입되어 있는 회원도 아닌데, 왜 당사자라고 하는지 이해할 수 없었다.
하지만 그 바로 다음 순간 난 서서히 그들이 무슨 소리를 하는지 알아차릴 수 있었다.
“이번에 열려는 작가님의 카페는…… 한국식 생일 카페에서 아이디어를 얻었거든요!”
“그렇지만 작가님께서는 연예인은 아니시니까. 얼굴 포토보다는 그림을 위주로 하려고 합니다.”
“자, 잠깐만요. 제 카페요?”
“예! 작가님의 생일 카페요!”
힘차게 대답하는 상대에게 미안한 일이었지만, 난 말 그대로 단어만 이해한 상태였다.
생일과 카페. 둘 다 무슨 단어인지는 알고 있었다. 그런데 그게 같이 모이고 나니 뭘 말하는지 이해하기 어려웠다.
“제 생일이라니…….”
아니 그것보다 내 생일은 대체 어찌들 알았다는 말인가. 내 두 눈이 가늘어지는 사이, 정답은 그들 중 한 명에게서 흘러나왔다.
“저희가 검색해서 알아보니 작가님 생일이 마침 10월이더라고요!”
“그러니까요. 딱 축제 시기와 겹치니…… 타이밍도 아주 굿.”
“헤헤. 이쯤이면 하늘이 생일 카페를 그때 열라고 도와주는 것이나 다름없죠.”
뭔가 시기가 좋다며 저희들끼리 말하는 친구들이었다. 그런 그들의 향해 난 일단 핵심으로 보이는 단어부터 질문을 던졌다.
“……생일 카페요?”
“넵.”
힘차게 대답하는 학생들. 어딘가 열정까지 느껴지는 그 대답에 난 민망한 질문을 되돌려 줄 수밖에 없었다.
“……그게 정확하게 뭔데요?”
“……네?”
내 물음에 그들은 당황한 기색이 역력했다. 서로 혼란스러운 눈빛을 교환하던 학생들. 그들은 한참을 의미 모를 침묵 후에야 다시 내게 조심스럽게 입을 열었다.
“……모르세요?”
“그…… 단어는 알겠는데요. 생일 파티를 카페에서 연다는 건가요?”
미국에 대해 공부할 때 종종 사진을 통해서 봤다. 생일 파티를 주최자가 음식점이나 카페에서 열곤 하는 모습을. 내가 떠올린 건 그런 행사였다.
대략적인 내 설명을 들은 그들의 눈빛이 묘해졌다. 이걸 어찌 말해야 좋을지 알 수 없다는 듯이 그들은 말까지 더듬었다.
“그게…… 비슷하긴 한데요.”
“사실 한국인이셔서 아실 줄 알았…….”
“야야.”
“콜록. 죄송합니다.”
뭔가를 말하려던 남학생. 그를 막은 건 여학생 쪽이었다. 그녀는 남학생의 옆구리를 찔러 침묵시킨 후에야 설명을 시작했다.
“생일 카페가 뭐냐면요. 간단하게 말하면 저희가 좋아하는 사람의 생일을 축하하게 위해 여는 카페입니다.”
“……생일의 주인공이 아니라 남이 열어 주는 파티인 거예요?”
이건 좀 신기했다. 생일 파티란 건 보통 부모님이나 본인이 여는 것이 아니었다는 말인가.
“어…… 자세한 건 나중에 한번 찾아보시면 바로 아실 거예요. 이게 설명을 듣는 것보다 한 번 찾아보는 것이 이해가 빠를 거라.”
“맞아요. 원래 한국에서 물 건너 온 거니까. 작가님은 금방 이해하실 거예요.”
호기심 어린 내 물음에 그들은 어색한 미소를 지었다. 뭔가 더 길게 설명하는 것이 어려운 모양이었다.
그들의 반응도 충분히 이해가 갔다. 백문이 불여일견. 원래 백 번 듣는 것보다 한 번 보는 것이 낫다고 하지 않은가.
여기서 어설프게 설명을 듣는 것보다 내가 한 번 검색을 해서 알아보는 것이 더 효율적이리라.
“네에. 그건 뭐 나중에 제가 찾아보죠.”
어려운 일은 아니었다. 지금도 종종 모르는 정보가 보이면 난 검색을 생활화했으니까.
이렇게나 손쉽게 모르는 것에 대한 정보를 얻을 수 있다니. 참으로 좋은 세상 아닌가.
“근데, 그 생일 카페라는 걸…… 그러니까 제 걸 여러분들이 열겠다고요?”
결국 난 이 말을 꺼내고야 말았다. 생일 카페가 뭔지는 모르겠지만 내 생일을 위해 남이 대신 열어 준다니. 나로서는 굉장히 신기한 일이었으니까.
“예! 저희가 작가님 기념 카페를 열고 싶어서요!”
“올해의 일일 카페 컨셉으로 작가님만 한 사람이 없어서요!”
작가님. 내가 같은 에일대 학생들에게서 들을 것이라 생각지 못한 호칭까지 나왔다. 이쯤 되자 난 이들과 내 대화가 헛돌고 있다는 걸 느끼는 중이었다.
‘정보! 정보가 필요해!’
이 순간 난 얼른 스마트폰을 잡고 싶어졌다. 아무래도 그 생일 카페인지 뭔지부터 검색해서 알아봐야 할 필요성이 절실해졌으니 말이다.

미국에서 누군가 스마트폰을 간절히 쥐고 싶어 하는 그 순간. 누군가는 스마트폰을 바라보며 희희낙락하면서 웃고 있었다.
“흐흐흐.”
“……관장님. 요즘 뭐 좋은 일 있으십니까?”
과할 정도로 싱글벙글하는 상사를 보면 뭔 생각이 드는가. 당연히 뭐길래 저러나 싶은 궁금증이 먼저 들었다.
“내가 요즘 기분이 하늘로 날아갈 것 같아서 말입니다. 가끔 이 화면을 보기만 해도 흐뭇하다니까.”
그러면서 한 화면을 보여 주는 영환. 그가 보여 주는 건 국립 현대 미술관의 입장객 숫자 변화를 나타낸 그래프였다.
“이거 보세요. 내가 관장이 된 뒤로 이렇게나 실적이 좋아졌는데. 내가 기분이 안 좋을 리가 있겠어요?”
국립 현대 미술관 관장은 엄연한 공무원 신분이었다. 하지만 공무원도 실적이 있고 그에 따른 성과가 있는 법.
이렇게 그가 부임하자마자 좋은 결과를 보인다면 당연히 그의 미래가 밝을 수밖에 없었다.
그 덕분일까. 영환은 입장객 추이가 적힌 업무 회의록만 올라오면 이렇게 웃음만 나왔다.
“‘올해의 작가상’이 대성공을 거두고 있는 중이죠. 이대로 쭉 이어지기만 하면 역대급 관람객을 동원하는 전시회가 될 겁니다.”
국립 현대 미술관에서 올해의 작가상을 위한 전시회가 시작된 지 한 달.
처음 사이트가 마비될 정도의 열기는 아니었지만, 여전히 관심도는 높았다. 인터넷으로 예매하는 예매율은 거의 떨어지지 않고 있었으니까.
“그래…… 유지. 암, 유지가 중요하지. 중요하고 말고.”
첫 단추가 중요하다고는 하지만 원래 더 중요한 건 유지력과 그에 따른 결과 아니겠는가.
공무원 사회에서 한평생 일하며, 결과의 중요성에 대해 익히 알고 있는 영환. 그는 은근히 본인의 속내를 드러내었다.
“그래서 말인데…… 진짜 해 볼까나.”
“해 보다니요? 뭘요?”
“신윤성 작가가 말한 그거 말이야. 각 후보자들 투표 결과를 중간 집계하는 거나…… 최종 결과 발표를 위한 생방송. 그거 해 볼까 해서요.”
이번 전시회의 핵심을 기획했다고 해도 과언이 아닌 화가가 신윤성이었다. 윤성 작가는 다른 건 몰라도 생방송은 꼭 필요하다고 말했다. 그러면서 영국의 터너상을 예시로 들기도 했다.
은근한 어조로 말하는 영환의 이야길 들은 상대방. 그는 어이가 없다는 표정으로 되물었다.
“……안 하실 생각이셨던 거예요?”
지금 이 정도로 인기 있고 화제가 되는 전시회를 만든 게 누군가. 하나부터 열까지 다 신윤성 화가의 손길이 닿지 않은 곳이 없을 정도였다.
애초에 참가자가 아님에도 본인의 작품을 전시하는 것부터 한 신윤성. 그는 심지어 자기 작품을 상품으로 내걸기까지 했다.
이 행사에 투자한다는 명목하에 거의 헐값에 가까운 형태로 작품을 내놓은 것이었기에.
그 배포에는 정말로 혀를 내두를 수밖에 없었다.
만약 전시회가 이 정도로 화제가 되지 못했거나, 혹은 화제가 되었더라도 인기가 없었다면 어땠겠는가.
거의 무료 봉사하는 것도 모자라 작가 본인의 이름값에도 타격이 갔으리라.
그 두둑한 배짱 덕분일까. 지금 현재, 뚜껑을 열어 보니 오히려 신윤성 화가의 이름값은 올라가는 중이었다.
10년이 넘는 세월 동안 단 한 번도 한국 미술계에 화제가 되지 못한 ‘올해의 작가상’을 이 정도로 메인 이슈로 만든 장본인. 윤성은 그것도 모자라 ‘신윤성’이라는 이름을 잘 모르는 이들조차 이번 행사를 통해 그 이름을 알게 만들고 있었다.
이 정도면 일석이조를 넘어 일석삼조 혹은 그 이상이었다.
그걸 해낸 작가가 바로 신윤성이었다. 그런 화가가 하겠다고 하는 건 원래 자다가 떡이 생긴다고 해도 믿고 따라 줘야 하는 법이거늘.
그런데 하겠다고 하는 걸 안 할 생각을 하다니. 그는 새롭게 온 관장이 이 정도로 감이 없는 사람인가 싶어 걱정부터 들었다.
“아니. 원래 생방송은 하려고 했죠. 그거야 신윤성 작가가 워낙 강경하기도 했고.”
“……그럼요?”
“근데 적당히 생색만 낼까 했거든. 딱 봐도 들어갈 예산이 장난 아니기도 했고.”
공무원들이 신경 쓰는 일이 뭔가. 바로 예산 관련된 일이었다. 워낙에 쥐꼬리만큼 주는 게 현실이었으니.
그런 상황을 관장인 영환 못지않게 잘 아는 그였다. 그는 잠시 침묵을 지킨 후에야 입을 열었다.
“전 솔직히 신윤성 작가가 하자는 대로 하고 싶습니다. 그것도 최대한 거창하게요.”
