25화 첫걸음을 시작한 이
전시회를 준비하는 일. 그건 절대 쉬운 게 아니었다.
‘할아버지랑 함께하는 데도 이 정도라니.’
일정은 빡빡했으며, 협의할 사항은 산더미였다. 단순히 그림만 그려서 끝나는 일이 아니었으니까.
유치원 시간이 끝나고 나서 난 거의 매일같이 할아버지 댁에 갔다. 그리고 거기서 할아버지와 함께 이동을 했다.
“여기서부터 시작입니다.”
“오호.”
온통 하얀 공간이었다. 지금은 텅 빈 그곳은 앞으로 나와 내 할아버지의 그림이 들어갈 장소였다.
그리고 내 손에는 웬 종이가 주어졌다.
“이게 뭐예요?”
거기엔 그림 사진들이 찍혀 있었다. 간단한 크기와 작품명이 적힌 종이였다.
“이제 할아버지랑 같이 이 그림들을 어찌 배치할지 고민할 거야.”
“배치요?”
“예. 가족전이시니 만큼 두 분의 의견을 들으면 좋을 듯해서요.”
내 신체적 나이는 아직 어렸다. 그럼에도 두 사람은 온전히 내 의견을 존중해 주려고 애쓰는 기색이 역력했다.
‘감사한 일이네.’
어른이 아이의 의견을 존중하는 건 쉬운 일이 아니었다. 그렇기에 난 어지간하면 별다른 반론을 제기하지 않았다.
그러나 내 의아함을 자극하는 일까지 아무 말 없이 넘길 수는 없었다.
“자모지심(慈母之心)을 입구에 둘까 합니다.”
장훈은 할아버지와 나를 번갈아 바라보며 한 공간을 가리켰다.
자모지심(慈母之心). 자애로운 어머니의 마음을 뜻하는 말로 내가 붙인 이름이다.
즉 그가 말하는 건 내 그림이었다.
“여기에요?”
그가 가리킨 곳은 전시장에 들어오는 문 앞이었다. 할아버지는 턱을 쓰다듬으며 고개를 끄덕이셨다.
“나쁘지는 않겠군.”
“아니, 진짜 제 걸 입구에 두실 거예요?”
하지만 할아버지와 달리 난 의아한 생각이 들었다. 내 그림은 인물화다. 그걸 왜 입구에 둔다는 말인가.
“보통 출입구에는 가장 화려한 그림을 두지 않나요?”
난 전시회를 해 본 적은 없었다. 애초에 조선에서는 그런 게 없었으니까.
그러나 난 화첩을 만들어 본 적도, 그림을 팔아 본 적도 있었다.
그렇기에 어찌해야 다른 이들의 시선을 사로잡을 수 있는지. 그건 확실히 알고 있었다.
자모지심은 내가 이번 생의 어머니를 그린 그럼이었기에. 화려하지도 눈에 확 띄지도 않았다.
심지어 난 아직 이번 생에선 무명이 아닌가. 그림 자체로 봐도, 명성으로 봐도 이건 아니라고 생각했다.
“할아버지께서 중심이시니, 당연히 할아버지 그림이 입구에 걸리는 줄 알았는데요.”
“그러니?”
“예, 전 아직 이룬 게 없는 화가인걸요. 그렇다고 그림이 눈에 확 띄는 것도 아닌데.”
내 말에 두 사람은 서로를 마주 보았다. 그러더니 거의 동시에 웃는 것이 아니겠는가.
“정말 손주분이 보통이 아니시네요.”
“흘흘. 그렇지?”
“예, 이 나이에 그런 걸 신경 쓰고 이렇게 말하다니.”
잠시 기가 막히다는 듯 말한 그는 쪼그려 앉았다. 내게 눈높이를 맞추기 위함이었다.
“작가님, 그 말씀도 맞습니다.”
그는 할아버지를 선생님으로, 날 작가님으로 부르고 있었다. 최근에는 말이다. 아마도 둘을 구분 짓기 위함으로 보였다.
“분명 그렇게 하는 경우도 있지요. 하지만 그런 것보다 더 확실하게 사람을 모으는 것이 있습니다.”
“그게 뭔데요?”
“바로 호기심이죠.”
그렇게 말한 그는 빈자리를 쳐다보았다. 마치 그곳에 그림이 있는 것처럼 상상하는 기색이었다.
“작가님께서 그리신 그림은 어머니를 그리신 거잖아요?”
“예, 그랬죠.”
그랬기에 화려한 색채도 눈에 띄는 아름다움도 없었다.
그건 말 그대로 이번 생에서 날 가장 아껴 주는 사람 중 한 명인 어머니를 그린 것이었으니.
“어머니가 있는 사람이라면 그 그림에 관심을 가질 수밖에 없습니다.”
“왜요?”
“날 사랑스럽게 바라보는 눈길을 느낄 테니까요.”
사랑하는 아이를 바라보는 눈빛. 그림을 본 많은 이들이 그 감정을 느낄 수 있다는 소리였다.
“사람이란 의외로 느끼는 게 비슷할 때가 많거든요.”
“맞는 말이지. 그래서 대단한 작품이나 그림은 막눈도 한 번에 알아보는 법이니까.”
할아버지 또한 턱을 쓰다듬으면서 이에 동의하셨다.
“그리고 그림에 대한 관심은 전시에 대한 호기심으로 변할 겁니다.”
호기심. 내가 말한 화려한 그림이나 명성보다 더 사람을 끌어당긴다는 그것.
그는 그에 대해 말하며 빙그레 미소를 지었다.
“그리고 그 호기심은 이번 전시는 사람을 끌어모으게 될 것입니다.”
그렇게 내 그림은 전시회의 입구에 걸리게 되었다. 할아버지의 이름이 앞에 오는 가족전임에도 말이다.

사람이 꽤 많았던 입구. 덕분에 그녀는 입구의 작품이 뭔지 팸플릿을 통해 알 수 있었다.
‘자모지심이라, 고전적이네.’
수채화 물감으로 동양화를 그린 작품명이 사자성어라니. 절대 요즘 많은 작품 스타일은 아니었다.
‘아예 그림 스타일을 바꾼 건가?’
이때까지만 해도 도연은 이 그림이 가영의 것이라 여겼다. 때때로 화가들은 그림 스타일을 충격적으로 변경하곤 했으니까.
꽤 놀라웠던 입구. 그걸 지나자 쭉 작품들이 전시되어 있는 것이 보였다.
‘이건 이민철 화백 작품일 것 같은데.’
입구의 그림을 제외하면 주로 보이는 건 익히 알고 있는 느낌이었다. 이민철 화백의 작품. 특유의 추상성이 있었으니까.
그 덕분일까. 그 속에서 이민철 화백의 작품이 아닌 걸 찾아내는 재미가 쏠쏠했다.
“오.”
이거였다.
도연은 단번에 이민철 화백의 작품 속에서 남다른 것 하나를 발견했다.
아니나 다를까 이 안에서도 꽤 많은 사람이 그 작품 안에 몰려들어 있었다.
거장의 작품 속에서도 그 특유의 느낌이 달랐으니까. 역시나 사람 보는 눈은 비슷한 모양이었다.
‘작품 설명 좀 보자.’
입구에 있던 건 사람들 때문에 볼 수 없었다. 하지만 여긴 달랐다. 몇몇 이들이 앞에 서 있었지만, 작품 설명을 못 볼 정도는 아니었으니.
그리고 그녀의 눈길이 박힌 자리. 거기엔 뜻밖의 이름이 쓰여 있었다.
신윤성.
전혀 들어 본 적 없는 이름이었다. 심지어 이민철 화백과 성까지 달랐다.
‘오늘 가족 전시회라고 하지 않았나?’
이름을 본 순간 그녀 의문은 더 깊어졌다. 도연은 그 순간 재빨리 들고 있는 팸플릿을 펼쳤다.
다 아는 사람이라고 생각하고 보지도 않은 작가 약력. 그걸 살펴보기 위함이었다.
그리고 거기엔 어처구니없을 정도로 간단한 약력이 적혀 있었다. 심지어 사진도 없이.

‘이게 뭐야?’
어느 학교에서 수학했는지. 어떤 전공을 했는지. 그 어떤 것도 나와 있는 것이 없었다.
보통의 작가 약력이 꽤 긴 것을 감안하면 아예 없는 거나 다름없는 짧은 문장이었다.
적혀 있는 건 오직 이름 석 자와 설명인지 뭔지 알 수 없는 딱 한 줄뿐.
어이가 없어진 도연은 하마터면 종이를 놓칠 뻔했다.
만약 그녀를 부른 사람이 없었으면 그러했으리라.
“어? 도연이니?”
“음?”
그녀는 옆에서 들려오는 목소리에 고개를 돌렸다. 거기엔 익히 아는 얼굴이 서 있었다.
그녀가 방금까지만 해도 이 전시회의 또 다른 주인이라고 잘못 알고 있었던 이였으니까.
“가영아, 오랜만이네.”
미술관에서 일하는 가영. 그리고 전시 쪽을 주로 취재하는 도연. 두 사람은 진즉부터 아는 지인이었다.
도연은 순간적으로 든 호기심을 억눌렀다. 오랜만에 만났으니 서로 안부가 우선이었기에.
“아이 낳았다고는 들었는데. 여전하다, 너.”
“너야말로 더 예뻐진 것 같은데?”
잠시 서로 훈훈한 인사말이 오고 갔다. 그러나 도연은 결국 호기심을 참지 못했다. 그녀는 알고 싶은 건 알아야 직성이 풀렀으니까.
“이거 가족 전시회던데, 너 다시 그림…….”
거기까지 말하던 그녀는 문득 가영의 얼굴이 낯익다는 사실을 깨달았다.
원래 아는 지인이라서가 아니었다. 방금 그녀가 보았기에 익숙한 것이었으니.
“너…… 저 입구에 걸려 있는 거 너 맞지?”
“……나 맞아.”
그녀는 어딘가 민망한 기색이 역력했다. 덕분에 도연의 충격은 더 컸다. 정말 가영이라니.
‘왜 몰랐지?’
굳이 따지자면 이유는 여럿이었다. 오랜만에 봤기에 스타일이 많이 달라진 것도 있었다.
그러나 진짜 큰 이유는 따로 있었다.
도연에겐 친구인 가영. 그런 그녀가 그토록이나 자애로운 얼굴을 한다는 상상을 할 수 없었으니까.
“와, 가족 전시회라고 널 입구에 건 거야?”
도연은 방금 본 작품을 떠올리며 물었다. 그녀는 이민철 화백의 딸이었으니. 입구에 자화상이라도 건 걸까.
“아니…… 나도 입구에 그게 걸릴 줄 몰랐는걸.”
“몰랐다고?”
“응. 설마하니, 나도 내 아들이 저걸 입구에 걸어 둘 줄은…….”
“잠깐만.”
도연은 방금 뭘 잘못 들은 듯했다. 아들이라니?
‘그러고 보니 작품명이 분명 자모지심이었지.’
자애로울 자, 어머니 모, 그리고 갈 지와 마음 심까지. 자애로운 어머니의 마음이 바로 작품의 이름이었다.
이를 떠올린 도연은 멍하니 질문을 던졌다.
“너…… 언제 나 모르게 다 큰 아들이 있었어?”
“다 큰 아들이라니?”
“그 정도 그림을 그릴 정도면, 못해도 미술 공부는 꽤 했을 텐데.”
이쯤 말하자 그녀는 약간 배신감까지 느껴질 정도였다. 늦게 결혼한 줄 알았는데, 알고 보니 일찍 결혼해서 아들까지 있었던 걸까.
“대체 언제 그렇게 키운 거야? 왜 난 그런 이야길 못 들어 봤지?”
“뭐. 아하하하하하.”
가영은 도연의 말을 듣고 큰 웃음을 터뜨렸다.
주변에서 그녀를 보며 입구의 그림에 대해 수군거리는 것조차 한순간 잊을 만큼, 유쾌한 웃음이었다.
“아…… 한참 웃었네. 야, 내 아들은 네가 아는 그 아들 하나야.”
“뭐? 하나?”
도연은 인상을 찡그렸다. 분명 그녀가 가영의 출산 소식을 들은 건, 채 몇 년이 되지 않았다.
“그게 무슨 말도 안 되는 소리야?”
“안 그래도 뒤에 오네.”
그녀가 가영에서 더 물어보려 할 때 가영의 시선은 그녀의 등 뒤에 가 있었다.
자연히 시선을 돌린 도연. 그녀의 눈에는 동글동글한 눈매가 귀여운 한 꼬마가 서 있었다.
“어머니, 오셨습니까.”
똘똘해 보이는 남자아이였다. 그 아이가 무척 공손한 자세로 가영이에게 인사하는 것이 도연의 눈에 들어왔다.
“이 아인…….”
“인사해. 내 아들인 윤성이.”
윤성이라니. 조금 전 팸플릿에서 본 그 이름이었다. 연속된 충격에 도연은 정신을 차릴 수가 없었다.
“윤성아. 이쪽은 엄마 친구인 김도연 아줌…….”
“야, 너.”
“아니, 아직 결혼 안 했으니 이모라고 하자.”
웃음기가 담긴 가영의 말. 평소라면 쏘아봤을 도연이었다.
그러나 지금의 그녀는 꼬마 아이에게서 눈을 뗄 수 없었으니.
“네가 입구의 여인을 그린 거야?”
이제 갓 초등학교에 들어갔을까 싶은 작은 꼬마.
도연은 질문을 참지 못하고 던지고야 말았다. 가영이 부른 이름을 듣는 순간 누구 아이인지 알았기에.
“그리고 지금 이 그림도 네 작품이고?”
막 그녀가 보고 있었던 그림. 그걸 가리키며 도연은 질문을 던지고야 말았다.
