35화 시간이 없다
“너네들이 그려야 할 건 딱 한 종류야.”
“하나?”
“응. 종류는 하나인데, 많이 그리고 싶으면 많이 그려도 되고, 하나만 그리고 싶으면 하나만 그리면 돼.”
주제를 하나로 잡되 그릴 수 있는 개수에는 자유를 두는 것. 내가 생각하기에 이렇게 하면 누구나 즐길 수 있었다.
그림을 좋아하는 아이들은 하나만 그리기보단 많이 그리는 걸 좋아했다. 그림 그리기를 좋아하지 않는 아이들도 하나 정도는 그릴 만했다.
“그 하나가 뭐야?”
“간단해. 별이거든.”
내 말이 나오기 무섭게 아이들의 얼굴이 밝아졌다. 다들 자신들이 잘 그리는 소재가 나오자 즐거운 기색이었다.
대한민국의 초등학교 학생들은 생각보다 그림을 많이 그린다. 간단하게는 그림일기부터 시작해 각종 교내 활동들까지.
그중에서 생각보다 많이 그리는 한 가지가 있었으니, 바로 별이었다.
그림일기부터 시작해 문제집까지. 온 사방 천지에 어지간해서는 다 별을 가져다 붙이니 당연히 익숙하게 잘 그릴 수밖에.
“별이면 잘 그릴 수 있지!”
“근데 왜 별을 그리라고 하는 거야?”
다들 호기심이 넘치는 나이답게 궁금증이 많았다. 난 순간 고민했다. 이걸 이 애들이 이해할 수 있을지 몰랐으니까.
그러나 결국 솔직하게 말하기로 마음먹었다. 이러니저러니 해도 이제는 친해진 친구들이었으니.
“최근 내가 인상 깊게 본 작품이 있었거든. ‘별이 빛나는 밤’이라고 고흐라는 외국 화가 작품이야.”
하늘에 놓은 별들이 반짝이는 작품. 밤하늘임에도 불구하고 별빛이 아롱거리는 모습이었다.
아름다움과 혼란스러움. 어두움 속에서도 힘이 넘치는 별의 모습은 보는 이의 눈길을 사로잡았다.
가지고 싶다는 욕망을 자극하는 동시에 화가의 개성까지 잘 드러난 작품이라는 걸 단박에 알 수 있었다.
내가 한 박물관에서 본 작품은 레플리카. 즉 가짜였음에도 그림에서 충분히 힘이 느껴졌으니. 이 그림이 굉장하다는 걸 파악하기 쉬웠다.
덕분에 기회가 된다면 꼭 진품을 보고 싶었다. 뉴욕현대미술관이란 곳에 있다던데. 언젠가는 갈 수 있으리라.
그림은 대부분 진짜가 가진 힘을 가짜는 절대 넘을 수 없으니까.
“그 비연속적인 붓놀림을 보니, 그리고 싶은 게 떠올랐거든. 밤하늘의 별을 각자 색다르게 표현해 보고 싶기도 했고.”
“고흐가 누구야?”
“인상 깊은 게 뭐야?”
역시나 말이 끝나기 무섭게 각종 질문들이 쏟아졌다. 하지만 난 자세히 설명하는 대신 다시 주제로 돌아왔다.
오늘 우리가 해야 할 일은 다양성과 혼란함을 잘 버무리는 것이었기에.
“어쨌든 다 같이 별을 그려 주면 돼. 근데 나도 너네들에게 말할 것이 있어.”
“그게 뭔데?”
“내가 너네 그림들을 많이 손볼 거야.”
“손본다고?”
아이들은 동시에 자신들의 손을 내려다보았다. 하지만 당연하게도 내가 말하는 손은 그 손이 아니었다.
“쉽게 말해 너네가 그린 그림을 내가 같이 그린다는 거야. 그림 위에 그릴 수도 있고, 옆에 그릴 수도 있어.”
여기까지 설명해 주자 몇몇 친구들은 알아듣는 기색이었다.
“나 알아! 미술 학원에서 선생님이 그렇게 많이 해 주셔.”
“나도 엄마가 그렇게 도와주는데…… 우리 그림 도와주겠다는 뜻이지?”
“응, 정답이야. 다들 동의하지?”
“난 좋아!”
“나도. 같이하면 좋잖아.”
“이건 원래 다 같이 하는 거라며, 싫어할 애 없어.”
스무 명의 아이들은 전원 긍정적인 뜻을 표했다. 그렇다면 이 일은 준비가 끝난 것이나 다름없었다.
“좋아, 그럼 우리 다 같이 여기에 그림 좀 그려 볼까?”
내가 아이들의 앞에 내민 건 두꺼운 도화지였다. 물론 난 여기에 한마디 말을 덧붙이는 걸 잊지 않았다.
“아, 근데 별은 종이 한가운데만 그려 줘. 그거 하나만 꼭 지켜 줬으면 좋겠어.”
내 말을 끝으로 다들 종이에 집중했다. 일단 말하면 그대로 따라 주는 친구들. 참으로 착한 어린이들이었다.
‘그럼 나도 할 일을 해 볼까?’
종이를 앞에 두고 머뭇거리고 있는 친구들. 내 첫 번째 목표는 이들이었다.

수진은 아이들을 바라보며 틈틈이 사진과 동영상을 찍고 있었다. 나중에 이 자료들을 모아 하나로 만들기 위해서였다.
그렇게 만들어진 영상은 아이들의 학부모에게 보여 주기 딱이었으니까.
물론 학생들의 활동에 문제가 생기면 바로 끼어들 준비는 늘 하고 있었다. 초등학교 1학년 아이에게 모든 부분을 맡긴 채 놀 생각은 없었기에.
‘기특하게 다들 잘하네.’
약간 걱정했던 것이 무색했다. 아이들은 윤성이의 말에 따라 열심히 그림을 그렸다.
주제는 별. 그렇기에 몇몇 학생들은 순식간에 그림을 끝냈다.
“윤성아. 나 다 했어! 일등이다.”
“나도 다 했거든? 너만 다 한 것 아니거든?”
이 순간 수진은 나설까 고민했다.
‘아이들마다 다들 속도가 다르지. 이 부분은 윤성이도 생각지 못했을 거야.’
신윤성. 이 아이는 그림에 있어서만큼은 독보적인 천재에 가까웠다. 그러나 그림에 재능이 넘친다고 해서 아이들까지 잘 다룬다는 건 말이 되지 않았다.
교실이 혼란스러워지면 윤성이도 당황하리라. 아무리 어른스럽다고 해도 이제 겨우 초등학교 1학년생이 아닌가.
하지만 수진이 채 나서기도 전에 윤성이의 나직한 목소리에 먼저 들려왔다.
“다 그렸어? 그럼 이쪽으로 가져와 봐.”
윤성이는 어느새 교실 뒤편에 가 있었다. 거긴 아이들의 작품이 완성되면 붙여질 공간 앞이었다.
“여기 그림 붙여 봐.”
“고쳐 주는 거 아니었어?”
“붙이면 고칠 거야.”
윤성이의 말에 빨리 완성한 아이들이 하나씩 그림을 붙였다.
“내 건 어디 붙일까?”
“어디 봐. 음…… 이건 여기 붙이자.”
윤성이는 아이들의 그림을 하나하나 살펴보았다. 당장 그림을 고치는 대신 아이들이 그림을 붙여야 하는 위치만을 잡아 줄 뿐이었다.
“별론데.”
“응, 이상하다. 그치?”
아름다움에 대해선 어른이나 아이나 비슷했다. 양쪽 보는 눈이 있었으니까.
다만 아이들은 어른들보다 더 솔직했다. 그림을 보자마자 본인의 감정을 표현했으니까.
제각각 다른 형태의 별들이 덕지덕지 붙어 있는 모양새가 좋아 보일 리 없었다.
어딘가 실망한 기색이 뚜렷한 아이들 사이에서 혼자 웃고 있는 건 윤성이뿐이었다.
윤성이는 쭉 그림을 훑어보더니 생각보다 만족스럽다는 듯 입꼬리를 올려 미소를 지었다.
“이건 아직 완성이 아니라서 그래.”
“완성?”
“응, 어디 보자…… 잠시만 다들 비켜 볼래?”
아이들이 그림 앞에서 나오는 사이. 윤성이는 가방에서 무언가를 꺼내 왔다. 그러더니 이것저것 준비하는 게 아닌가.
“뭐 하는 거야?”
“으차. 원래 작업 전에는 준비를 좀 해야 해서.”
아이의 가방을 꽉 채울 만한 물건. 그건 바로 수채화 팔레트였다.
수채화 팔레트와 함께 줄줄이 튀어나오는 붓들. 이 모든 걸 본 주변은 어안이 벙벙한 얼굴이 되었다.
“야, 신윤성. 너 그런 걸 들고 다니는 거야?”
“응, 당연히 들고 다녀야지.”
“와, 심지어 물통에 물도 들어 있어.”
“여기 있는 모든 건 다 내 중요한 장비야.”
“……그게?”
이해할 수 없다는 친구들의 반응에 윤성이의 대답은 태연하기 그지없었다.
“응, 너네 부모님이 스마트폰 안 들고 다니신 적 있어?”
“……없어.”
“이건 그런 거야.”
그런 게 대체 뭐란 말인가. 폰은 가볍기라도 하지. 물통에 물까지 들고 다니다니. 아무리 작은 물통이라고 해도 무게가 꽤 있었다.
하지만 윤성이는 거기까지만 설명해 준 뒤 곧바로 붓을 꺼내 들었다.
붓을 쥐자마자 친구의 분위기가 바뀌었다. 어딘가 나직해진 느낌이었으니.
아이들로서는 난생처음 보는 친구의 낯선 얼굴이었다. 그 진지한 윤성이의 박력에 다른 아이들은 저도 모르게 입을 다물었다.
사방이 어딘가 어색할 정도로 고요해졌다. 그제야 윤성이는 준비되었다는 듯 행동을 시작했다.

붓놀림은 과감했다. 마치 미리부터 이렇게 하기로 계획한 양 한 치의 망설임도 없었다.
“어?”
아이들이 그린 별의 형태는 각기 달랐다. 그림 실력과 개성이 모두 달랐으니까.
윤성이의 붓은 그 사이 빈틈을 꼼꼼히 채워 나갔다. 별들 사이를 누비는 붓의 움직임은 어느새 새로운 형태를 만들고 있었다.
“우와…….”
조용한 가운데 아이들의 입에서 저도 모르게 탄성이 튀어나왔다. 몇몇 아이들은 두 눈을 휘둥그레 뜬 채 윤성이와 그림을 번갈아 바라보는 중이었다.
“신기하다. 진짜.”
“그러게.”
친구들이 속닥거리는 사이에도 윤성이의 행동은 멈추지 않았다.
“어? 내 그림에!”
중간중간 자연스럽게 붓을 바꿔 쥐며 아이들의 별 위에도 색을 더했다. 그러면서도 아이들의 그림 형태는 최대한 남겨 놓는 모양새였으니.
마치 처음부터 그 그림은 그런 그림이었던 것처럼 자리를 잡아 가고 있었다.
분명 자신들이 그린 그림인데, 그 그림이 미묘하게 바뀌었다. 그렇게 바뀐 그림은 어쩐지 다른 별들과도 잘 어울렸다.
“멋지다…….”
그 신비롭기까지 한 광경에 아이들도 홀린 듯이 바라보고 있었다.
한시라도 가만히 있기 어려워하는 초등학생들. 그런 아이들의 눈길까지 사로잡을 만한 힘이 그 그림에는 있었다.
아이들의 선생님이던 수진도 넋을 놓고 그 광경을 바라보았다. 그녀는 저도 모르게 멍하니 감상을 내뱉고 말았다.
“리터치 작업을 이렇게까지 할 수 있구나.”
리터치. 다시 그림을 매만져 주는 작업은 생각보다 어려웠다. 하물며 중구난방에 가까운 아이들의 그림. 그 그림을 이렇게까지 하나의 작품으로 조화롭게 만들 수 있다니.
‘진짜 천재라는 건 어릴 때부터 확실하게 보이는 거구나.’
그녀의 초등학교 선생 역사에서 난생처음 보는 재능이었다. 지금까지 그녀가 천재적인 재능을 가졌다고 생각했던 아이들. 그 모든 아이들이 이 재능 앞에선 빛을 잃었다.
그 정도로 아이가 가진 재능의 빛은 찬란했다. 까막눈이 봐도 확실할 지경이었으니까.
수진이 온전히 제정신을 차린 건 윤성이가 움직임을 멈춘 그 시점이었다. 아이는 그녀를 바라보며 씩 미소를 지었다.
“선생님. 완성한 것 같은데요.”
“와! 윤성이가 완성했대.”
“여기 내가 그린 별 좀 봐 봐. 예쁘지 않아?”
그제야 아이들도 흥분해서 떠들어 대기 시작했다. 갑자기 멈춰 있던 시간이 흐른 것처럼.
급격히 소란스러워지기 시작하는 아이들 틈에서 수진은 결국 참지 못하고 물어보고야 말았다.
“……대체 친구들이랑 이런 그림을 그릴 생각은 어찌한 거니.”
“간단해요, 선생님. 제가 요즘 각기 다른 걸 조화롭게 만들기를 공부 중이라서요. 완전 다른 화풍을 조화롭게 만들기도 해 보고 싶었죠.”
“뭐?”
“생각해 보면 온통 먹빛이었던 그림에 약간의 색이 더해진 것이 참으로 아름다웠거든요.”
“저기, 그게 무슨 소리니…….”
수진은 아이가 하는 말을 하나도 이해할 수 없었다. 분명 아이는 한국말을 하고 있음에도 말이다.
학생들이 말이 서툴러 못 알아듣는 경우는 있었어도 이렇게까지 또렷하게 말하는데도 이해 못 할 줄은 몰랐다.
“과거에는 먹색에 다른 색을 더하여 하나의 그림을 만들었죠. 그리고 요즘은 여러 재료로 한 가지 작품을 만들더라고요.”
“그랬니?”
“네에, 그럼 여러 사람의 그림도 한 작품으로 만들 수 있지 않을까 싶었어요.”
이쯤에서야 수진은 겨우 겨우 아이가 하는 말을 알아들을 수 있었다. 윤성이는 마치 무언가 깨달음을 얻어 시원해진 듯 환하게 웃으며 그림을 돌아보았다.
“보니까 얼추 성공한 느낌이네요.”
얼추 성공? 아니었다. 이 그림은 당장 어떤 미술 대회의 단체 작품으로 내놓아도 수상할 수 있으리라.
이런 생각이 문든 든 수진은 윤성이에게 작은 목소리로 속삭였다. 아직 아이들이 그림을 보며 떠들썩한 지금 이 순간이 기회였다.
“이렇게 잘 그리는데, 왜 미술 대회는 안 나가겠다고 하는 거니? 선생님이 여러 개 자세히 알려 줄 수 있는데.”
수진으로서는 방학 때 하는 어린이 사생 대회가 딱 좋아 보았다.
학기 중 하는 대회라고 해 봐야 대부분 직접 가서 그리는 게 아니라 그림을 보내는 형식이었다.
그런 형식의 미술 대회는 어린아이들이 직접 그리는 것보단 어른들의 손을 타는 것들이 많았다. 윤성이에게는 딱히 매력적이지 않으리라.
“그거 다 방학 때 하는 거잖아요. 그땐 안 됩니다.”
“혹시 그 이유를 선생님도 알 수 있을까?”
“저 방학 때는 뉴욕에 가야 해서요. 국내 대회 나갈 시간이 없어요, 선생님.”
윤성이의 대답은 단호했다. 애초에 국내에 없으니 대회에 나갈 수 없다는 뜻이었기에.
