36화 아직 소속이 없지?
내가 속한 반 애들이 함께 그린 그림. 일명 ‘별이 빛나는 1반의 밤하늘’은 화제가 되었다.
어쩌다 방문하는 다른 반 학부모들까지 찾아와서 한 번은 보고 갈 정도였으니까. 오죽하면 학교에서 그림 때문에 부모님들에게 동의서까지 보낼 정도였다.
“그러니까, 이게 윤성이 때문이라는 거지?”
아버지는 날 보며 자랑스럽다는 듯 웃으셨다. 난 그런 아버지 앞에서 처음 맛본 황홀함을 만끽하는 중이었다.
“아버지, 이건 뭐예요? 엄청 맛있어요!”
“달고나라는 건데. 요 앞에서 팔더라고. 윤성이가 좋아할 것 같아서 이 아빠가 사 왔지.”
달고나. 정말 이름 한번 잘 지은 음식이었다. 이렇게 달고 나다니.
바삭한 식감은 입안에서 사르르 녹았다. 노란색이 품은 막대한 달달함은 내 혀를 풍요롭게 해 주었다.
내가 행복해하는 사이에도 아버지는 여전히 학교에서 가져온 종이를 들고 계셨다.
“와, 내 평생 학교에서 애들 그림 때문에 이런 것도 받아 볼 줄이야.”
어이없어하시던 아버지께서는 다시 안내문을 펼치셨다. 거기엔 간략한 내용이 담겨 있었다.
“애들 그림을 학교에 기증받겠다는 동의서라니. 참 나.”
한참을 기막혀하시던 아버지는 묵묵히 동의서만 바라보시는 어머니를 향해 슬쩍 질문을 던지셨다.
“당신은 그 그림 봤지?”
“……봤지.”
“난 솔직히 믿기 어려워서…… 윤성이가 처음부터 다 그린 그림도 아닌데도 이런 일까지 할 정도로 그림이 좋아?”
아버지의 말에 난 어머니의 눈치를 살폈다. 어머니께서는 학교에서 우리 반 아이들이 그린 그림을 본 뒤 계속 말이 없으셨다.
덕분에 나도 아직 어머니에게서 그 그림을 본 소감을 듣지 못한 상태였다.
“객관적으로 윤성이가 혼자 그린 그림보다는 못해.”
“그런데도 왜…….”
“하지만 20명이 다 같이 그린 그림인 만큼 그 개성은 확실했어. 보는 이의 눈길을 사로잡기에 충분할 정도로.”
난 하마터면 이 귀한 달고나를 떨어뜨릴 뻔했다. 그만큼 어머니의 반응은 놀라웠다. 내 그림에도 인색하시던 분이 이런 감상을 표현하시다니.
“왜? 내가 이런 말 하니 놀란 거야?”
아버지의 두 눈이 커진 게 보였다. 그 모습을 본 어머니는 웃으면서 입을 여셨다.
“감각적인 천재는 무너지기 쉬워. 난 윤성이가 그런 아이일 수도 있다는 생각을 했었어.”
“…….”
“그런데 윤성이가 친구들의 그림을 리터칭해 준 걸 보니 알겠더라고. 이상할 정도로 내 아들의 기초가 단단하다는 것을.”
자기 것만 잘하는 천재는 뒤를 돌아볼 수 없었다. 단 한 번도 못 해 본 적이 없으니 남을 이끌어 주기도 쉽지 않았다.
어머니가 말씀하시는 부분이 어떤 것인지 아는 난 속으로 뜨끔했다. 그야 난 그런 의미에서는 진정한 천재라고 할 수는 없었으니까.
기초도 없이, 배우지도 않고 자기 그림을 그릴 수 있는 존재라니. 어디 사는 괴물인가.
이러다간 점점 더 듣기 민망한 소리가 나올지도 몰랐다. 아무리 얼굴 가죽이 두꺼운 나라고 해도 부모님에게 이런 소리를 길게 듣는 건 무리였다.
이럴 때 제일 좋은 방법은 화제를 돌리는 것. 마침 딱 좋은 이야깃거리가 내게 있었다.
“어머니, 그럼 뉴욕에서 할아버지랑 있어도 되는 거죠?”
“그건…….”
어머니가 말끝을 흐리셨다. 난 지금이 기회임을 직감하고 곧바로 벌떡 일어났다. 방으로 가서 뭘 가지고 나오기 위함이었다.
“여기요. 이거 할아버지가 주셨어요.”
내가 내민 건 영어가 잔뜩 출력된 종이였다. 백문이 불여일견이라고 했다. 원래 백 번 듣는 것보다 한 번 확실하게 보는 게 좋다.
“그때 제 그림을 사러 왔던 제임스라는 사람 기억하시죠?”
“……기억하지.”
어머니 입장에서도 모를 수가 없는 사람이었다. 당시 전시회 때 내 그림을 사기 위해 한 그의 노력을 알고 계셨으니.
“그 사람이 미국 뉴욕에서 전시회를 한다고 꼭 오라고 했대요. 거기 보면요.”
어머니께서 영어를 하셨다. 편지 형식으로 된 글이라 그렇게 어려운 말이 아니니 충분히 직접 읽고 해석하실 수 있으셨다.
“오고 가는 표도 다 구해 주고, 또 잠잘 곳도 다 알아봐 준대요.”
“윤성아, 너 벌써 여기 있는 영어 다 알아듣는 거야?”
말이 없는 어머니를 대신해 아버지의 놀랍다는 반응이 있으셨다. 아버지께서는 나와 영어로 된 종이를 번갈아 보며 신기하다는 눈빛이 되셨다.
“아버지, 전 아직 이렇게 어려운 말은 못 읽어요. 이제 8살인걸요.”
“……어, 음. 그렇구나.”
내 단호한 대답에 아버지께선 무언가 떨떠름한 과일을 씹은 얼굴이 되셨다. 뭐라 말하고 싶으신 듯 몇 번 입술을 달싹이시더니 이내 한숨을 내쉬었다.
“본인이 8살 어린애라서 못 한다고 당당히 말하는 8살이라니…….”
아버지께서 뭐라고 중얼거리시는 동안 난 얼른 어머니 옆으로 바짝 다가갔다.
“저 할아버지랑 꼭 뉴욕이란 데 가고 싶어요. 어머니.”
“그건 안 된다고 말했잖니. 그때 엄마랑 아빠는 윤성이랑 같이 가 줄 수가 없어요.”
“일 때문에 바쁘시다는 거 알아요. 그치만 보호자로는 할아버지께서 같이 가시면 된다고 그러셨는걸요.”
“……벌써 할아버지랑 이야기까지 한 거야?”
“네에, 같이 갔으면 좋겠다고 말씀하신 게 할아버지신걸요.”
“이, 이 아버지가 진짜 애를 데리고 어딜 간다고…….”
어머니의 기세가 심상치 않으셨다. 그렇기에 난 불똥이 튀기 전, 재빠르게 입을 열었다.
“어머니께서 좋았다고 했던 저와 제 친구들의 그림이요. 그 작품에 영감을 준 그림이 뉴욕에 있대요.”
“설마 너…….”
“네, 저 뉴욕에 있는 그림들을 보고 싶어요. 이왕이면 다 진짜들로요.”
이번에 친구들과의 작품을 만드는 데 영감을 준 고흐의 별이 빛나는 밤. 그 작품이 있는 곳이 뉴욕현대미술관이었다.
그 외에도 뉴욕에는 내가 영상과 레플리카로만 보던 그림들이 많았다. 그것도 다 진품들로만.
“그림을 보고 싶어서 뉴욕에 가겠다는 거야?”
“네에.”
“고작 그림 보고 싶어서라니…….”
“고작이 아니에요. 어머니.”
고작이라니. 그렇지 않았다. 난 반드시 지금 시대에 최고로 인정받는 화가들의 그림을 이 두 눈으로 보고 오감으로 느껴야만 했다.
“전 다른 화가들의 작품을 여럿 보았어요. 그리고 저 태블릿이란 물건으로 그 작품들의 사진도 찾아보았죠.”
두 분과 함께 수많은 박물관이나 미술관을 갔다. 국립중앙박물관부터 시작해 현대미술관 등 엄청 많았다.
그곳에서 난 오감으로 그림을 살폈다. 그리고 집에 와 두 눈으로 그 그림을 찍은 사진을 봤다.
그 결과 내가 내린 결론은 간단했다. 그림은 무조건 진품을 보고 말을 해야 한다는 것. 그 어떤 고화질의 사진도 그림이 담은 힘을 온전히 표현할 수는 없었다.
“사진과 실제 직접 본 그림은 굉장히 느낌이 달랐어요. 그렇기에 사진만으로는 충분하지 않아요.”
사진으로만 그림들을 본 난 솔직히 제대로 감이 오지 않았다. 한 겹 두꺼운 장막 안에서 그림을 바라보는 기분이었다.
이 시대의 미술에 현격한 영향을 끼친 화가들. 그 화가들의 작품 중 많은 것들이 뉴욕에 있었다.
좀 더 크면 유럽이란 곳도 가 보고 싶었다. 이 시대의 그림을 이해하는 데 그 지역도 반드시 가 볼 필요가 있어 보였다.
뉴욕은 내가 이 시대의 그림. 혹은 화가들의 욕망을 이해하는 데 가장 좋은 장소이리라.
“마침 할아버지께서도 그때 뉴욕에 가신다고 하니까. 저도 꼭 같이 가고 싶어요. 어머니.”

스마트폰을 부실 듯 내려놓는 것이 보였다. 그럼 제임스의 행동을 본 상대는 혀를 찼다.
“아니, 협의 잘해 놓고 왜 성질이야?”
“잘하긴 했지. 이 정도면 이 선생님과 그 꼬마 다 올 것 같으니까.”
“근데 왜 그러는 거냐고.”
“내가 성질 안 부리게 생겼어? 고작 홍림 따위가 뭐라고. 갑질을 하는 거야?”
홍림은 충분히 큰 곳이었다. 이 시장에서 꽤 큰 대한민국. 그곳에서 가장 영향력 있는 곳이 홍림아트센터였으니까. 어지간한 큰 전시회는 홍림을 통해 대한민국으로 들어가는 상황이었다.
그러다 보니 어쩔 수 없는 부분이 있었으니. 제임스 입장에서는 두 사람을 초청하기 위해 홍림에 확인받아야 하는 것들이 한두 개가 아니었다.
“그들 입장도 이해해 줘야지. 이 작가는 그들 간판 작가인걸. 잘 관리하지 않으면 전속 계약을 해지할 테니까.”
“홍림이 품기에 이민철 선생님이 큰 화가이시긴 하지.”
뭔가 홍림에 단단히 틀어진 것이 분명했다. 제임스가 이렇게 성질을 부릴 때 그나마 말릴 수 있는 건 전담 매니저인 톰뿐이었다.
“그래도 홍림 정도 되니까 어린 신 작가도 네가 발견한 거 아냐.”
“그건…….”
맞는 말이었다. 만약 홍림에서 신윤성 작가의 그림을 선보이지 않았다면 제아무리 제임스라고 해도 신윤성 작가를 발견하긴 어려웠으리라.
실력이 보통은 아닌 작가지만, 이 바닥이 반드시 실력만 가지고 평가받지는 않는다.
어쩌면 한참 뒤에야 겨우 그 어린 작가를 찾아냈을지도 모른다.
“그러니 홍림 너무 싫어하지 말고, 좋게좋게 하자. 우리. 어때?”
“…….”
잠시 침묵을 지키던 그는 결심한 듯 입을 열었다.
“아직 신윤성 작가는 소속이 없지?”
화가들은 한 화랑이나 아트 센터에 소속되어 있는 경우가 많았다. 그래야 안정적으로 전시회도 열고 그림의 판매처도 확보하기 좋았으니까. 덤으로 전속이 되면 수익 배분율도 좋아진다.
“없을걸? 홍림이 노력하고 있다는 소리는 얼핏 들었는데.”
“아직 어린 작가니, 작가는 급할 게 없고 홍림은 하루라도 빨리 잡아 두고 싶겠지.”
제임스는 알 만하다는 듯 중얼거렸다. 젊다 못해 어린 작가. 급한 쪽은 작가가 아니었다.
“나…… 갑자기 좋은 생각이 떠올랐어. 톰.”
언제 인상을 찡그렸냐는 듯 사악한 웃음을 짓는 제임스. 그런 그를 보며 톰은 슬슬 불안해졌다. 제임스가 저런 얼굴일 때 종종 치는 사고의 규모를 알기 때문이었다.
“뭔진 모르겠지만, 위법은 안 된다. 제임스, 요즘 우리 조용해서 좋잖아.”
“그렇게 말하면 내가 법이라도 막 어긴 것 같잖아. 그런 거 아니니까 안심해.”
“그럼 뭔데?”
“어린 천재는 세계 어디서나 통하는 법이지.”
“……너 설마?”
“맞아, 이쪽 물로 끌어들이자. 늘 언제나 괜찮은 작가는 부족한 법이니.”
“그렇다고 하기엔 신윤성 작가에 대해 너무 알려진 게 없어. 이민철 화가의 손자라는 정도론 세일즈 포인트가 부족하다고.”
유명 화가의 손자라는 건 수집가들의 욕구를 자극하기 좋은 점이었다. 그러나 그뿐. 아예 이 바닥에 자리를 잡게 만들기에는 부족한 면이 분명히 있었다.
마켓에서 부족한 건 팔릴 만한 작가지 아무 데나 있는 흔한 화가가 아니었기에.
“걱정 마. 내가 그런 생각도 안 했을까 봐? 다 방법이 있어.”
톰의 의문스러운 얼굴에도 제임스는 씩 미소를 지었다. 이미 다 계획을 완료했다는 자신만만한 표정이었다.
