37화 어디에 나온다고요?
기본적으로 내 성향은 일단 저질러 보는 쪽에 가까웠다. 그러다 보니 막상 걱정은 일을 벌이기 직전이 제일 많았다.
조선에서 왜로 넘어갈 때도 온갖 걱정은 그 전날 밤에 했다.
혹시나 배가 침몰당하지는 않을까. 요즘 노상강도가 많다는데 괜찮을까 등등.
이런 내 성향은 다시 태어나서도 비슷했다.
다만 혼자서 모든 것을 결정하고 마음대로 했던 과거와 달리 지금은 논의할 대상이 있다는 것만 달랐다.
전생의 나보다 더 많은 세월을 산 할아버지를 믿었다. 그렇기에 지금 내가 매달릴 사람은 할아버지뿐이셨다.
“할아버지, 진짜 괜찮겠죠?”
“아니, 며칠 전까지는 별걱정도 안 하던 애가 갑자기 왜 이러는 게냐?”
그전까지야 뉴욕에 도착해서 볼 것들에 관심이 더 갔다. 뉴욕에는 대형 박물관도 미술관도 많았으니까.
할아버지와의 여행 기간은 꽤 넉넉한 편이었다. 부모님은 짧은 걸 원하셨지만 할아버지께서 긴 쪽을 택하셨다.
덕분에 난 요 며칠간 계속 뉴욕에서의 계획을 세우기 바빴다. 그러나 막상 출발하려고 하니 온갖 걱정이 밀려왔으니.
왜에서 물 때문에도 고생했는데, 그건 괜찮을지. 음식은 잘 먹을 수 있을지. 파란 눈의 사람들에게 익숙하게 행동할 수 있을지 등등.
막상 가기 직전 날이 되자 온갖 걱정거리가 밀려들었다.
오죽하면 할아버지는 내 긴장된 마음을 풀어 주시려는 듯 농담까지 건네셨다.
“윤성아, 비행기는 신발 벗고 들어가는 건 알고 있지?”
“……할아버지, 전 어리석지 않습니다. 요즘 누가 그런 거에 속아요?”
문제는 그 농담이 너무 흔해 빠진 거라 어이가 없어질 지경이라는 게 문제였을 뿐. 내 뾰족한 눈초리에 할아버지께서는 아무렇지도 않게 웃으셨다.
“흘흘. 역시 윤성이는 똑똑하구나. 그럼 기내식 먹으려면 영어를 잘해야 한다는 것도 알고 있겠구나.”
몰랐다. 애초에 기내식이라니. 생각지도 못했다. 아니, 그것보다 말 못 하면 아예 먹지도 못하는 건가?
“비행기 안에서 밥도 먹어요?”
“그럼. 대신 뭘 먹을지 잘 말해야 한다. 안 그러면 이상한 음식을 주는 경우도 있어요. 흘흘.”
이건 일리가 있는 말이었다. 예전 조선에서 왜 나라에 가서도 말 잘못하면 이상한 음식을 먹게 되기 일쑤였으니까.
이럴 때 난 경험상 최고의 방법을 알고 있었다. 마침 내 옆에는 딱 알맞은 예시가 있었으니.
‘무조건 할아버지를 따라 하자.’
장유유서의 원칙에 따라 난 할아버지의 뒤를 따를 생각이었다. 먼저 할아버지께서 하시는 걸 흉내 낸다면 중간은 갈 수 있으리라.
내가 남몰래 결심하는 그사이 드디어 난 비행기에 탑승할 수 있었다.
‘막상 하늘로 올라갈 때는 이런 느낌이구나.’
전생에서는 상상치도 못했던 풍경이었다. 하늘을 날다니. 심지어 그 하늘 위에서 아래를 내려다볼 수도 있었다.
‘신기한 게 많네.’
쇠로 된 거대한 비행기. 그 안에는 신기한 물건도 많았다. 내가 소리만 들리면 집중하려고 노력하는 사이 할아버지는 내게 담요를 주셨다.
“윤성이는 푹 자 두렴. 지금 자야 시차 적응을 잘할 수 있어요.”
“네에.”
시차 적응이 뭔지 안다. 워낙 멀리 떨어져 있는 나라니, 낮의 시간대가 다르다는 것도. 그렇기에 난 순순히 눈을 감았다.
“시차는 절대 얕보면 안 된다. 그래야 혹시라도 미국에서 일이 있어도 잘 버티지.”
“무슨 일이요?”
다른 이들 그림 보러 놀러 가는 여행이다. 거기서 무슨 일이 있다는 말인가.
“그만큼 시차가 무섭다는 게다. 흘흘.”
“그렇군요.”
일리가 있으신 말씀이셨다. 이 발전된 지금 시대에도 한참은 가야 하는 나라. 미국 뉴욕이 최종 비행 목적지였으니까.

“결국 기내식은 제가 뭘 말할 필요도 없었네요.”
난 정말 비행기에서 먹고 자기만 했다. 기내식에 대해서 말할 필요도 없었다. 눈 떠 보니 앞에 음식이 놓여 있곤 했으니까.
“윤성이는 나중에 해외 갈 때 좋겠구나. 비행기 체질이야.”
잘 먹고 잘 자는 날 보며 할아버지께서 이렇게 말씀하실 정도였다. 잠을 자서 개운한 나와 달리 할아버지는 이리저리 몸을 움직이셨다.
“에고고, 이 나이에 비행기를 타려니 쉽지 않구나.”
팔도 올리고 허리도 돌리시던 할아버지는 금세 다시 내게 말을 거셨다.
“그래. 뉴욕에 도착했는데, 짐 풀고 나면 뭐부터 제일 하고 싶은지 말해 보려무나.”
“할아버지 일이 우선이죠. 만나실 사람이 있다면서요?”
나야 뉴욕에 놀러 온 것이었다. 그렇지만 할아버지는 달랐다. 무슨 비엔날레인지, 트리엔날레인지를 준비하러 오신 것으로 알고 있었으니까.
“그거야 아직 시간이 있지. 그리고 이번은 윤성이랑 같이 여행하는 게 메인이에요. 흘흘.”
여기까지 이야기를 하셨는데도 말하지 않는 건 효가 아닌 법. 할아버지께서 내게 진지하게 물어보시는 듯 하니, 난 냉큼 대답했다.
“우선 꼭 가야 하는 장소는 두 군데예요. 할아버지.”
“오, 그게 어디냐?”
“뉴욕현대미술관이랑 메트로폴리탄이요.”
이 이름을 외우기 위해 난 끊임없이 영상을 돌려 봤다. 저 두 곳은 내가 보고 싶은 그림들의 보고나 다름없었다.
“둘 다 가 볼 만한 곳이긴 하지. 음, 어디 일정을 한번 볼까.”
“할아버지, 그 두 곳은 할머니랑 갈래요.”
내 말에 할아버지는 물론 옆에 계시던 할머니도 날 바라보셨다. 계속 할아버지랑 붙어 있던 내가 할머니랑 가겠다고 하니 두 분 다 뜻밖이신 듯했다.
“……뭐? 아니 왜? 이 할애비랑 가야 설명을 잘해 줄 텐데?”
그건 그랬다. 할아버지는 확실히 내가 모르는 많은 것들을 알고 계셨다. 특히나 현대 미술에 있어서 할아버지만큼 좋은 스승님도 찾기 어려우리라.
하지만 그럼에도 난 이렇게 정한 이유가 있었다. 내 목표는 온전히 그림들을 살피고 느끼는 것이었기 때문이었다.
“두 곳 모두 엄청 크다고 들었어요. 그래서 전 며칠씩 가 보고 싶어요.”
뉴욕현대미술관. 이쪽은 현대 미술계의 거장이라고 불리는 작품들이 모여 있는 곳이었다.
기대하고 있는 빈센트 반 고흐의 작품뿐만이 아니라 다른 유명 작가의 작품도 많았다. 현대 미술의 발전사나 특징을 한눈에 보기 딱이었다.
또 다른 쪽인 메트로폴리탄. 여긴 내가 한국에서 본 국립중앙박물관과 비슷했다. 다만 그 규모와 작품의 숫자가 차원을 달리할 뿐.
고대부터 시작해 현대의 미술까지. 한 번에 살펴보기 알맞은 장소였으니. 난 이 두 곳을 찬찬히 살펴볼 작정이었다.

결국 난 계획대로 할머니와 함께 미술관에 가기로 했다. 먼저 가기로 한 쪽은 뉴욕현대미술관, 통칭 MOMA라고 불리는 장소였다.
“평일인데도 줄이 기네요.”
할머니의 손을 붙잡고 내가 도착해서 처음 본 것을 긴 줄이었다. 다행히 우린 미리 예매된 표를 보여 주며 빠르게 들어갈 수 있었다.
“윤성이는 고흐의 작품을 보고 싶다고 했지?”
팸플릿을 보시며 할머니는 내게 물어보셨다. 손자가 보고 싶어 하는 걸 제일 먼저 보여 주실 요량이셨다.
“그냥 천천히 처음부터 봐요. 그러려고 일찍 온 거잖아요. 할머니.”
“그럴까?”
“네에.”
여기 있는 작품은 대부분 진짜 그 화가가 그린 진품이었다. 그 덕분일까. 그림 하나하나에는 그에 맞는 힘이 담겨 있었다.
‘그림 자체의 분위기가 완전 다르네.’
내가 가장 신기해한 부분. 그건 그림의 농도가 매우 짙다는 것에 있었다. 확실히 형식이 내가 전생에서 보던 것과는 많이 달랐다.
‘같은 사람인데, 이렇게까지 다르게 작품이 나오는 이유가 뭘까.’
서양화와 동양화. 그 특성을 구분 짓는 것에 대해 고민해 볼 만한 문제였다.
대부분의 그림들은 관찰할 만했다. 물론 작품 중에는 내 이해의 범주에서 엇나가 있는 작품도 있었다. 그런 건 대체 무슨 생각으로 만든 건지 궁금해지곤 했다.
‘어?’
그 순간. 난 나도 모르게 발걸음을 멈추고 말았다.
동시에 깨닫고 말았다. 사람들이 이 방에 사람이 유난히 많이 모여 있는 이유를.
‘이런 미친…….’
내가 그린 작품은 기본적으로 세밀한 관찰을 필요로 했다. 순간적으로 포착된 장면을 그린 풍경화든 사람을 그린 인물화든 그건 동일했다.
그렇기에 화가가 관찰을 해서 탄생한 그림이 어떤 건지 잘 알았다.
추상화라 불리는 것과 달리 눈을 부릅뜨고 봐야 나오는 작품. 난 이 작가의 집착을 그 누구보다 한 번에 파악할 수 있었다.
‘이게 이런 작품이었다고?’
가끔가다 인터넷에서 볼 수 있는 작품. 그때만 해도 별다른 생각이 들지 않는 그림이었다.
하지만 막상 직접 실물로 작품을 보니 생각이 달라졌다. 이 작가의 그림에 대한 집착은 타의 추종을 넘어서리라.
난 먼저 그림 옆에 붙은 작품명과 화가의 이름을 보았다.

이론적으론 난 이미 이 작품을 알고 있었다. 그가 죽기 전에 만든 유작이자 연작이라는 것을.
‘빛을 얼마나 자세히 살펴본 거야.’
이 정도로 세밀한 빛의 변화를 표현하기 위해선 눈을 희생해야만 했을 것이다. 화가가 맨눈으로 빛을 보지 않는 이상 이런 작품은 나올 수 없었기에.
‘작품끼리 연결되는 부분도 세밀하기 짝이 없어.’
물에 비친 빛의 오묘함이 빛나고 있었다. 그 색채의 아름다움은 가히 전율적이었다.
세세히 그 그림을 살펴보며 전율하고 있을 때. 내 옆에서 말소리가 들려왔다.
“역시 너라면 이 앞에 있을 줄 알았지.”
할머니는 내 그림 감상을 절대 방해하지 않으셨다. 화가가 다른 작가의 작품을 살피는 게 얼마나 중요하신지 잘 알고 계시기에.
‘어떤 자식이…….’
한참 작품을 감상 중일 때 방해하다니. 째려보려던 난 뜻밖의 인물 때문에 두 눈이 절로 커졌다.
“네 그림 스타일도 실물을 관찰하는 데서 비롯되니, 이 작품에 관심을 가질 줄 알았다.”
제임스 킴.
이전에 내 그림을 사간 사람이자 나와 할아버지를 여기로 초대한 장본인. 그가 위화감이라곤 전혀 없이 내 앞에 서 있었다.
뚜벅―
그는 자연스럽게 옆으로 왔다. 나와 함께 그림을 감상하는 자세를 취하더니 아예 팔짱까지 끼는 것 아닌가.
“……왜 여기 계신 거에요?”
“난 오늘이 마침 휴일이야. 그리고 마침 네가 여기 오늘 온다고 이 작가님에게 이야기를 들었지.”
이 작가님. 그건 분명 할아버지를 말함이었다. 그거로 내 거취를 알았다고 해도 그가 여기 올 이유가 되진 않았다.
“그게 여기 계신 이유는 아니지 않아요?”
“휴일을 어디서 어떻게 보내는 건 내 마음 아니겠어?”
거기까지 말한 그는 내게로 고개를 돌렸다. 그러더니 눈을 가린 특유의 선글라스를 슥 위로 밀어 올렸다.
“그것보다 난 네 생각이 궁금한데.”
“제 생각이요?”
나도 특이하다고 생각하지만 이 사람도 진짜 만만치 않았다. 도무지 대화의 맥을 종잡을 수 없었다.
여기서 갑자기 내 생각은 왜 나온다는 말인가.
“너 왜 여기 있는 거지?”
“제가 여기 있는 게 이상한 거예요?”
뉴욕에 온 아이가 미술관에 있는 게 이상한가? 그러나 그의 입에선 뜻밖의 정보가 흘러나왔다.
“그래, 너 이 선생님이랑 같이 사무실에 있어야 하는 거 아닌가?”
할아버지와 함께 사무실에 가야 하지 않느냐는 질문이었다. 난 여전히 이 대화를 도무지 이해하지 못하고 있었다.
“제가 왜요?”
“왜긴 왜야. 너도 비엔날레 나오려면 지금부터 발품 좀 뛰어야 하지 않나?”
비엔날레라니. 그의 입에선 내가 전혀 상상치 못한 단어가 튀어나왔다.
