39화 저 사람, 뭐 하는 거지?
할아버지는 톡톡 책상을 두드리시며 입을 여셨다. 깊은 생각에 잠기실 때 가끔 볼 수 있는 행동이셨다.
“제임스가 말했다는 건 아마 총감독이 기획한다는 아르세날레일 거다.”
“아르세날레요?”
“베니스 비엔날레를 여는 총감독이 직접 기획하는 전시회를 그렇게 말하지.”
“어쩐지 다른 것도 있다는 소리로 들리는데요.”
“맞아, 국가들끼리의 대결은 여기가 아닌 자르디니 쪽이거든.”
베니스 비엔날레가 미술계 올림픽으로 불리는 이유. 그건 국가관이 있어서였다.
“그리고 솔직히 이 할애비가 보기에 윤성이 네가 더 가능성이 있는 쪽은 이 국가관이다.”
국가관으로 운영되는 베니스 비엔날레. 난 조선인에 이어 한국인으로 태어났으니, 아마 작품을 내게 되면 거기 낼 수 있다는 뜻이었다.
“국가관이면 한국관이겠군요.”
“그렇지. 객관적으로 윤성이 넌 국내에서는 몰라도 세계적으론 아직 전시회를 한 적이 없으니까.”
“그거야 그렇죠.”
사실이기 때문에 타격도 없었다. 내가 한 번 한 건 고작 국내의 전시회. 그것도 할아버지와 함께한 가족전이 다였기에.
“뭐. 국가관에서 하든 아르세날레에서 하든 너 혼자가 아닌 다른 이들과 함께 거길 채우게 될 게야. 그때 협업이 반드시 필요할 거다.”
협업이란 소리를 듣자 제일 먼저 떠오른 건 내가 최근 반 친구들과 한 그림이었다. 그랬기에 난 질문을 위해 입을 열었다.
“제가 한 협업은 딱 하나였어요. 반 친구들과 같이 ‘별이 빛나는 교실’ 그린 거요.”
전생에서도, 현생에서도 그 외엔 협업을 해 본 기억이 없었다.
“작가님 그건 협업이라고 하시긴 좀…….”
“왜요, 겨우 초등학생들 소꿉장난이라서요?”
“그, 그게…….”
농담이 섞인 내 말에도 그는 차마 말할 수 없는 모양이었다. 내가 그 소꿉장난을 만든 당사자였으니까.
‘이런 농담은 안 통하네. 이전에는 잘 통했는데 말이지.’
아직 지금 시대의 유머는 잘 모르겠다. 이전에는 이런 식의 농을 하면 박장대소하며 웃어 줬는데. 잠시간의 침묵 때문에 민망해진 난 얼른 말을 덧붙였다.
“뭐. 본질은 같죠. 여럿이 하나의 작품을 만드는 것이니까요.”
“넌 같다고 말하지만, 정말 하게 된다면 꽤 다를 게다.”
“달라요?”
“내가 알기론 비엔날레 최연소 작가라고 해 봐야 20살 정도일 거야.”
“약관……. 생각보다 어리네요.”
“흘흘. 네가 할 소리는 아니지. 정말 네가 하게 되면 8살이 하는 거니 말이다.”
할아버지의 웃음소리를 들으며 난 잠시 생각에 잠겼다.
‘협업이라. 아직은 잘 감이 안 오네.’
이렇게 된 이상, 할아버지께 자문을 구하고 싶었다. 내가 아는 협업은 정과 부가 있는 상하 관계뿐이었으니.
내가 친구들과 그린 건 엄밀히 말해 내 존재가 주였다. 이때, 친구들은 보조에 가까웠다.
만약 여기서 말하는 협업도 그런 쪽이라면, 내가 보조가 되는 형태일 가능성이 높았다.
‘그건 별로인데.’
신체적인 나이는 틀림없이 내가 제일 어릴 것이다. 아마 현시대에서 화가로서의 경력이나 그림 숫자도 내가 가장 적을 것이고.
그렇다고 해서 내가 다른 작가의 보조가 된다니. 그런 스스로의 모습 자체를 상상하기 어려웠다.
“이전에 하실 때 어떤 식이었는지 자세히 말씀해 주시면 안 될까요?”
“협업의 방식을 물어보는 게냐?”
“네에. 만약 제가 알고 있는 방법으로만 주로 한다면, 전 이번 기회가 아무리 좋아도 안 할 거예요.”
“헉. 작가님 진짜 안 하실 겁니까?”
장훈이 옆에서 기겁하는 게 느껴졌다. 얼굴을 본 그는 내 마음이 진심임을 알아차렸다. 난 그에게 확신을 주기 위해 고개를 끄덕였다.
“네에, 그럴 생각인데요.”
“무려 베니스 비엔날레입니다. 세계 3대 비엔날레라고 불리는 곳이라고요.”
“세계 3대가 아니라 제일의 비엔날레라고 해도 전 안 해요.”
“제일의 비엔날레가 맞습니다만, 아니 그것보다 대체 왜…….”
“제 그림이 보조가 될 자신이 없거든요.”
장훈은 순간적으로 할 말을 잃은 기색이었다. 오만하다고 여겨도 상관없었다. 이건 내 진심이었으니까.
“제가 말한 방식의 협업은 한 쪽이 월등히 뛰어나야 이루어질 수 있어요. 그게 안 된다면, 보조하는 쪽이 색을 죽여야 될 거예요.”
내가 본 제임스의 그림은 뛰어났다. 그 특유의 냉소적인 현실을 비판한 그림들. 생동감이 넘쳤고 남이 함부로 따라 할 수 있는 수준이 아니었다.
분명 그의 실력은 대단했다. 하지만 그게 꼭 내 우위에 있다곤 말하긴 어려웠다. 우린 단지 색이 다를 뿐이었으니까.
만약 베니스 비엔날레에 참여하는 작가들이 제임스와 비슷하다면, 내 생각은 변하지 않으리라. 난 그림의 힘을 일부러 죽일 수 없었다. 내가 그게 가능한 인간이었다면, 난 도화서에서 나오지도 않았다.
“윤성이 네가 말한 방식이 많은 건 사실이다. 하지만 다른 방법도 꽤 있지.”
“있어요?”
“기억 안 나는 게야? 대표적인 게 너와 내가 한 가족전이지 않니.”
“그건 한 작품에 한 게 아닌…….”
여기까지 말한 난 눈이 커졌다. 왜 한 종이 위에 같이 그려야 한다고 생각했는지 모르겠다. 고정관념에 사로잡히는 걸 싫어하는 내가 고정관념을 가지고 있었다니.
“공간에서 조화가 되면 된다는 거군요.”
“그렇지. 작가들끼리의 협업은 그렇게 많이 한단다.”
그 정도라면 상관없었다. 아니, 오히려 좋아할 일이었다. 새로운 화풍과 내 작품의 조화를 도모해 볼 수 있었으니까.
“할아버지, 그 비엔날레라는 행사요. 참가하는 작가들이 정해지는 건 언제죠?”
“글쎄다. 이 할아버지가 할 때가 벌써 한참 전이니, 지금과는 좀 다를 텐데…….”
말끝을 흐리는 할아버지를 보며 행동한 사람은 장훈이었다. 그는 신속하게 움직였다. 마치 기회를 포착한 매처럼 눈까지 번뜩였다.
“작가님. 저희가 도와드리겠습니다. 일단 베니스 비엔날레의 주최 측과 연락해서…….”
당장에라도 계획을 줄줄이 말할 기세였다. 그는 아예 태블릿까지 꺼내 들고 계획을 세우려는 참이었다. 그 순간 난 문득 떠오른 사건이 있었다.
“아니요, 괜찮습니다. 전화번호 있어요.”
“예? 전화번호요?”
황망한 낯빛이 된 장훈을 보며 난 내 앞에 놓인 음료를 한 모금 마셨다. 순간 입안 가득 퍼지는 달달함에 기분이 급격히 좋아졌다.
“우와, 이거 맛있다. 할아버지, 이건 뭐예요?”
“마시멜로가 들어간 핫초코입니다. 작가님. 그것보다 전화번호라니요?”
내 질문에 답을 한 장훈은 내게 시선을 한시라도 떼지 않았다. 대답을 하지 않았다간 이 쫀득한 핫초코도 먹지 못할 지경이었다.
“아까 만났을 때 제임스 전화번호를 받았어요.”
“……개인 번호를요?”
“네에, 자기가 아는 비엔날레 정보를 다 알려 주겠다고 하던데요. 그리고 그 누구더라? 무슨 총괄 번호도 준다고 했는데.”
“그 제임스 킴의 개인 전화번호라니. 아니, 그것보다 그 총괄이라는 게, 설마 베니스 비엔날레 총괄 예술 감독은 아니죠?”
“그건 기억이 안 나요. 그나저나 꼭 전화하라고 신신당부했는데, 전화 안 하기도 뭐하니, 하긴 해야겠죠?”
장훈이 중얼거리는 사이. 난 할아버지를 바라보았다. 쇠뿔도 단김에 빼는 법. 원래 이런 건 정해지면 바로 움직이는 게 좋았다.
“할아버지. 폰 빌려주실 수 있으세요? 여기가 미국이라 제 건 안 된다고 했거든요.”
어머니의 말씀이 내가 가진 폰은 국내용이라고 하셨다. 동시에 난 결심했다. 조만간 외국의 연락도 잘되는 폰으로 바꾸기로.

원래 가 보려던 미술관을 바꾸었다. 그것도 오늘은 할아버지와 할머니 두 분과 같이 왔다.
“원래 여긴 안 오려고 하지 않았니?”
“네에, 솔직히요.”
할머니께서는 이미 내 일정을 꿰뚫고 계셨다. 당연히 안 가기로 했던 미술관에 간다고 했으니, 의아하시리라.
“원래 오늘은 무슨 전망대 간다고 하더니, 갑자기 마음을 바꿨구나?”
“이 도시 전체를 보는 전망대에 가는 것보다 여기 휘트니에 오는 게 급했으니까요.”
마음을 바꾼 게 맞았다. 원래 안 오려고 한 곳을 우선순위에 올려 찾아온 것이었으니까.
할아버지께서 잠시 자리를 비우신 사이 할머니께서는 내 옷매무새를 점검해 주셨다. 궁금하신 걸 말씀하시면서.
“이 할머니는 미술은 잘 모르지만, 여기도 꽤 유명한 미술관 아니니?”
“그럴걸요. 미국 뉴욕에서 한 손에는 꼽히는 곳이니까요.”
휘트니미술관. 건물의 외관부터가 무슨 계단 엎어 놓은 것 같은 이곳은 뉴욕에서도 유명한 곳 중 하나였다.
하물며 지금은 휘트니 비엔날레 중이라고 했으니. 더더욱 사람이 많이 보였다.
“근데 왜 여긴 처음에는 안 오려고 한 거야?”
“여긴 가장 미국적인 색채가 강하다고 들어서요.”
미국 여행에 쓸 수 있는 시간은 한정되어 있었다. 여기가 후순위로 밀렸던 이유. 여긴 이 외국에서도 가장 진보적인 예술가들의 작품이 있는 곳이었으니까.
“미술관도 사람이랑 똑같거든요. 각자 취향이란 게 있으니까요.”
가장 현대 미국스러운 미술관. 그곳이 휘트니였다. 그렇기에 난 상대적으론 후순위에 미뤄 둔 것이다.
내가 궁금한건 전반적인 현대 미술이었지. 미국만의 미술이 아니었기에.
“상대적으로 우선순위에서 밀리긴 했지만, 이렇게 된 김에 꼭 와야 하는 장소가 돼 버렸죠.”
“그 비엔날레인가 때문에 그러는 거야?”
“네에.”
“으흠, 이 할머니가 듣기론 휘트니 비엔날레랑 베니스 비엔날레는 완전 다르다고 들었는데?”
자신이 없는 목소리셨다. 아무래도 할머니는 할아버지를 통해 이 분야에 대해서 약간만 아시는 상태였으니. 틀릴 수도 있다고 여기신 듯했다.
그런 할머니를 향해 난 미소를 지었다. 맞는 말씀을 하셨으니까.
“할머니 말씀이 맞아요. 완전 다르다고 저도 들었으니까요. 그렇다고 해도 전 오는 게 좋다고 판단했어요.”
“판단이라는 단어도 알다니, 윤성이는 정말 똑똑하구나. 그렇게 생각한 이유가 있을까?”
“네에, 전 비엔날레라는 걸 한 번도 직접 본 적이 없으니까요.”
할아버지는 물론 보통의 화가들과도 난 달랐다. 난 아직 이 시대에 아는 것보다는 모르는 것이 더 많은 사람이었기에.
조선에서의 난 달랐다.
당시 조선이나 왜에서 유행하는 화풍도. 양반가에서 가장 잘 찾는 그림도. 심지어 하늘 같으신 임금의 취향도 대강은 알고 있었다.
모두 내가 직접 보고 들으며, 알게 된 것들이었다.
하지만 지금의 내가 알게 된 정보는 모두 간접적으로 얻은 것들뿐이었다. 텔레비전이란 걸 보고, 태블릿에서 확인한 사실들. 그렇게 배운 것들로는 분명 한계가 있었다.
“제일 좋은 건 베니스 비엔날레를 한번 보는 거지만, 그건 불가능하니까요.”
2년에 한 번씩 하는 행사이기에 비엔날레라고 불린다. 작년에 이미 열린 베니스 비엔날레. 내가 이번엔 과거로 회귀하지 않는 이상, 이를 직접 볼 수 있는 방법은 없었다.
“그러니까, 휘트니 비엔날레라도 보겠다는 거구나.”
“네에, 뭐. 일종의 꿩 대신 닭이라고 봐도 좋겠네요.”
내가 할머니와 그런 이야기를 하고 있을 적. 드디어 할아버지께서 돌아오셨다.
“아이고, 우리 손주. 많이 기다렸지? 어서 들어가자,”
할아버지를 따라 미술관에 들어가려고 했다. 미리 티켓을 끊어 온 우리는 상대적으로 짧은 줄에 설 수 있었다.
“잠시 티켓 확인 좀 하겠습니다.”
“여기요.”
이제 이 정도의 영어는 가뿐했다. 할아버지가 하시는 말씀을 들으며 난 얌전히 기다렸다.
역시나 미술관은 언제 어느 순간 봐도 신기한 작품들이 많았다. 머릿속이 환기되는 느낌이랄까.
기분 좋게 관람을 하는 도중 난 특이한 행동을 하는 사람을 목격했다.
‘저 사람 뭐 하는 거지?’
그는 어떤 그림과 자신의 손바닥을 번갈아 바라보고 있었다. 만약 그뿐이었다면 내 시선을 끌지는 못했으리라.
하지만 그는 그림을 바라보며 자신의 손바닥에 무언가를 잔뜩 짜내고 있었다. 내가 좀 더 의문을 품기 전 문제는 순식간에 발생했다.
그가 품에서 난데없는 물건을 꺼내 행동에 옮긴 것이다.

“당신 미쳤어?”
“저 사람 뭐 하는 거야?”
“경찰, 아니 보안 요원 불러!”
곳곳에서 사람들의 비명 소리가 들려왔다. 그만큼 내가 보고 있던 사람이 한 행동은 충격적인 것이었다.
“다들 꼼짝 말고 내 말을 들어!”
