40화 요즘은 이런 것도 허용이 된다고?
내가 겪은 이 시대는 그 어느 때보다 자유로운 시대였다.
수많은 사람들의 의견이 반영되는 시기. 모든 이가 자신의 뜻을 펼칠 수 있는 시간으로 보였기 때문이었다.
그 어느 때보다도 자신의 의견을 낼 수 있는 시기이자 표현의 자유가 존재하는 때.
조선에서 한 자유로움 했다고 자부하는 나조차 이 시대의 자유에는 멈칫할 때가 많았다.
바로 오늘 이 순간처럼 말이다. 그만큼 내 눈앞에서 벌어지는 일은 충격적이었으니.
“지구를 살려야 합니다!”
“이 예술품이 지구보다 중요하진 않습니다!”
한 손바닥을 액자에 붙인 채 외치는 사람. 난 다른 사람들이 수군거리는 소리를 해석하고 나서야 그가 뭘 하는지 깨달았다.
“저리 비켜! 난 내 할 말을 하고 가겠어!”
양복을 입은 보안 요원들이 달려왔다. 요원들이 그를 끌어내려 하는 그때, 그 사람은 큰소리로 협박하듯 외쳤다.
“내 손을 찢어 놓지 않는 이상, 함부로 뗄 수 없을 거다!”
“지금 저거 손에 순간접착제 붙인 거지?”
“경찰이 끌어낼까 싶어서 철저히 준비해 온 것 같은데?”
액자와 본인의 손을 붙여서라도 하고 싶은 이야기라니. 그 행동력 하나만큼은 정말 보통이 아니었다.
그러나 내가 진짜 기가 막히다 못해 코가 막히는 상황은 따로 있었다.
“시위라니. 쯧쯧, 또 시작이네.”
“휘트니 비엔날레까지 와서 하다니, 빨리 정리가 되면 좋겠는데.”
주변의 이런 반응을 들으며 난 어이가 없었다. 만약 내 귀에 들리는 영어가 어려운 단어의 나열이었다면, 난 내가 영어에 미숙해서 잘못 알아들었다고 판단했으리라. 그만큼 내 귀에 박히는 소리들은 어처구니가 없었다.
‘사람들의 반응이 왜 이 모양이지?’
대체 왜 다들 이해하는 표정들인지 모르겠다. 다들 이 익숙하다 못해 지긋지긋하다는 기색들은 뭔지.
혼란스러움 대신 묵묵히 사건 해결을 바라는 분위기. 난 이를 피부로 느끼며 할아버지의 옷을 붙잡고 흔들었다.
“할아버지, 할아버지.”
“응? 왜 그러는 게야.”
마찬가지로 그 상황을 지켜보고 계시던 할아버지는 내 부름에 나를 돌아보셨다. 그러더니 날 보호하듯 어깨를 감싸셨다.
“여기서 시위를 여기서도 해요?”
“으흠, 이 할아버지도 말만 들었지 실제로 겪은 건 처음이구나.”
“여기 광장이 아니라 미술관이잖아요.”
조선에서는 감히 상상도 할 수 없는 일. 그게 바로 시위였다. 일단 그런 일을 벌이면 둘 중 하나였으니까.
혁명이거나 반역이거나.
성공하면 원하는 바를 전부 손에 넣지만, 실패하면 완전한 죽음뿐인 것. 당연히 함부로 할 수 있는 일이 아니었다. 그게 내가 조선에서 겪은 시위였다.
그 둘 다가 아닌 의견 표출을 위한 시위라는 것부터가 내겐 신선했다. 얼마나 남이 들어주길 바랐으면, 이런 일을 한다는 말인가.
물론 그렇다고 해도 이건 아니라고 여겼다.
다른 사람의 작품을 파괴하는 행동으로 의견을 표현하다니. 저 그림은 무슨 죄란 말인가. 그리고 저 작품을 만든 화가는 무슨 낭패란 말인지.
“광장 같은 데서 하는 거야, 그럴 수 있다고 쳐도…… 여긴 미술관인데, 여기서도 시위를 할 수 있어요?”
광장이나 공터야 애초부터 사람들이 모이라고 만들어 둔 곳이었다. 이 자유의 시대에서 그것까지 막을 수는 없으리라.
내가 본 영상이나 기사들도 그런 건 수도 없이 많았다. 어디 어디에서 또 시위가 일어났다는 소식 천지였으니까.
하지만 여긴 달랐다. 미술품을 관람하고 전시하기 위한 미술관이 아닌가. 그런 일을 할 수 있는 공간이 아니었다.
“거기다 저 사람 미술품에 이상한 물감 던졌어요.”
“물감이 아니라…… 보아하니, 케첩인 모양이구나.”
할아버지는 두 눈을 가늘게 뜨시고 작품을 바라보셨다. 그 사람이 들고 있는 통과 번갈아 보시더니 차분한 목소리로 중얼거리셨다.
“할아버지. 그렇게 침착하게 말씀하실 게 아니라…… 저 사람, 작품을 훼손한 거 아니에요?”
다른 작가의 작품을 허락도 없이 망가뜨리다니. 아무리 생각해도 저 사람이 작가의 허락을 받고 저런 일을 했을 것 같지는 않았다.
‘아무리 이 시대라지만 저런 미친놈들까지도 허용한다는 말이야?’
어처구니가 없어진 난 목이 졸린 기분으로 겨우 입을 열었다. 이 의문을 풀지 못하면 머리가 뜨거워져 미술품이고 뭐고 관람할 기분이 안 들 것 같았기에.
요즘은 이런 것도 허용이 된다고? 정말 정도란 건 없는 건가?
“할아버지, 요즘은 다른 사람 작품까지 훼손하는 것도 자유예요?”
“그럴 리가 없지 않니. 이 할아버지도 반달리즘 행위는 문제가 있다고 보는 측이야.”
“반달리즘이요?”
배워도 배워도 모르는 말은 계속 나왔다. 어쩐지 단어의 모양새가 한국어인 것 같지는 않았다. 내가 모르는 기색이자 할아버지께선 찬찬히 설명해 주셨다.
“반달리즘은 고의로 문화유산이나 예술품을 훼손하는 행동을 말하는데, 이거에 대한 논쟁은 계속 진행 중이지.”
심지어 그런 파괴적인 행위에 이름까지 붙어 있단다. 그만큼 많이 일어나는 현상이란 의미였다.
“고의로 훼손이라니, 대체 왜 그러는 건데요?”
다른 사람의 작품을 훼손해서 얻는 게 뭐란 말인가. 그 사람의 작품이 내 것이 되는 것도 아닌데.
하물며 저건 그냥 약간 훼손하는 정도도 아니었다. 아예 그림을 망치겠다고 작정한 것이었으니까.
그림 위에 있는 시뻘건 케첩을 보며 난 착잡해졌다. 내가 알기로 여기서 전시되는 작품의 주인은 대부분 아직 살아 있었다.
즉, 자기 작품이 저 꼴이 된 걸 화가도 볼 수 있다는 소리였다.
“그거야 저런 일을 하는 그들에게 물어봐야 정확히 알겠지만…….”
잠시 말끝을 흐린 할아버지는 턱을 쓰다듬으셨다. 이걸 내게 어찌 설명해야 할지 애매하다는 표정이셨다.
“보통은 자신들의 의견을 가장 효과적으로 전달할 수 있기 때문에 그렇지. 아무래도 이렇게 하면 눈에 띄는 법이니까.”
“한마디로 유명세 때문이라는 거네요.”
아무리 그래도 그렇지. 남의 작품을 훼손하다니. 조선에서 나름 한 일탈 했던 장본인인 나조차도 남의 작품을 훼손할 생각은 하지 못했다.
내가 이름을 알리기 위해 김홍도나 겸재 선생님의 작품을 훼손한다고? 있을 수 없는 일이었다.
저런 행동을 도저히 이해할 수는 없었지만, 사람들의 반응은 흥미롭긴 했다. 난 할아버지의 손을 붙잡은 채 빙 둘러보았다.
“생각보다 반응이 격하진 않네요?”
사진을 찍는 사람들부터 무언가 전화를 하는 사람들까지. 이 행동을 보는 이들의 반응은 다양했다.
하지만 내 생각만큼의 큰 충격을 준 것 같지는 않았다. 특이한 해프닝이라는 듯 눈빛을 빛내는 모습들이 전부였으니까.
경악하는 모습보다는 신기한 걸 봤다는 반응들이었다. 오히려 몇몇 사람들은 기뻐하는 느낌까지 들었다.
스마트폰을 들어 이런저런 각도로 사진까지 찍어 대고 있었으니.
“이미 이런 일이 종종 예전부터 있었지. 그러니 이러는 것일 게야.”
“예전부터라니…….”
과연 신기한 시대였다. 조선은 물론 예의범절은 밥 말아 먹었다고 하던 왜에서조차 상상할 수 없는 일이 버젓이 벌어지고 있었으니까.
여기에 할아버지는 한술 더 뜨셨다. 내게 허리를 굽혀 작게 속삭이셨는데, 그 내용이 심상치 않았다.
“아예 이런 쪽으로 작품 활동을 하는 예술가까지 있단다.”
“이런 쪽이요?”
믿을 수 없었다. 다른 이의 작품을 파괴하는 것으로 작품 활동을 하는 사람이 있다고? 경악한 나는 하마터면 큰 소리로 물을 뻔했다.
다행히 할아버지의 귀 건강을 위해 참을 수 있었다.
“다른 작품을 훼손하는 게 작가 활동이라니, 그건 범죄 아니에요?”
남의 재물이나 재산을 파괴하는 건 엄연한 범죄다. 그게 언제부터 범죄가 아닌 예술 활동이 되었다는 말인가.
내 속삭임에 할아버지는 귀엽다는 듯 머리를 쓰다듬어 주셨다.
“그건 범죄 맞지. 그거 말고 이런 걸 빗대어 자신의 작품을 만드는 사람이 있다는 게야.”
그러면서 할아버지는 내게 그라피티나 이런 식의 낙서화에 가까운 작품들을 이야기해 주셨다.
나중에 찾아볼 수 있도록 구체적으로 유명한 작가들과 작품명도 말씀해 주셨다.
“그야말로 극한에 가까운 표현의 자유군요.”
“그렇지. 현대 미술은 작가가 의도한 표현력이 그 무엇보다 중요시되거든.”
생각해 보면 이 미술관도 그랬다. 휘트니미술관. 가장 미국적이라는 말이 별명처럼 붙는 만큼 난해한 작품이 많았다.
그런 미술은 해설을 보지 않고는 도무지 이해하기 어려운 부분이 분명히 존재했다.
“다른 사람은 알지 못하는 작가의 의도가 담긴 작품도 있겠네요.”
“……흘흘. 아무래도 그런 면이 있지.”
조선에서의 난 표현의 자유를 추구하는 작가였다. 여인을 그린 것도, 화려한 색감을 그림에 사용한 것도, 내가 아니면 잘하지 못했으니까.
그러나 그런 면은 시대가 발전하며 다른 이들도 할 수 있는 일이 되었다.
내가 아닌 다른 이들도 색을 잘 사용하게 되었기에. 동시에 다른 사람들도 그리는 주제에 제한을 두지 않게 되었기 때문이었다.
“시대가 변하며 발전했다고 생각했는데, 본질은 변하지 않았군요.”
“본질이라니?”
“표현의 자유는 늘 시선을 사로잡네요.”
할아버지를 보며 난 미소 지었다. 만약 저 앞의 상황이 심각하지 않았다면 난 큰 소리로 웃음을 터뜨렸으리라.
“자유로울수록, 충격적일수록 사람들의 시선을 사로잡는군요. 그렇게 주목받은 건 더더욱 가지고 싶어지겠죠.”
결국 시대가 바뀌어도 이런 면은 변하지 않았다. 충격적인 면모는 사람의 시선을 사로잡는다. 그렇게 사로잡은 작품은 소유하고 싶은 마음을 불러일으키리라.
내가 전생에서부터 가장 중요하게 생각한 것. 그건 결국 사람의 욕심 혹은 욕망이라고 불리는 그 감정이었다.
이를 자극하는 작품이야말로 내가 추구하는 바였으니. 그 감정을 자극시키기 위해 하는 행동도 완전히 이해 못 할 바는 아니었다.
내 표정을 본 할아버지는 내 손을 꼭 쥐셨다. 그러더니 엄한 얼굴로 입을 여셨다.
“윤성아, 그렇다고 해도 저건 범죄야. 하면 안 되는 거예요.”
“할아버지도 참. 제가 애인가요. 저런 걸 따라 하게.”
“이 녀석아. 넌 애가 맞아.”
내 대답에 할아버지께서는 어처구니없다는 기색으로 답하셨다. 걱정은 왜 하시는지 알겠지만, 그건 정말 쓸데없는 일이었다.
“걱정 마세요. 할아버지. 저게 범죄가 아니라고 해도 전 남의 작품에 흠집 내는 건 싫어요.”
누가 내 작품에 저런 짓을 한다고 생각해 봐라. 난 절대 가만히 있을 수 없었다. 그 사람의 머리털을 다 뽑아 놓을 자신이 있었다.
이런 내가 남의 작품에 반달리즘? 그런 생각을 꿈에도 할 리가. 다만 저기서 작은 실마리를 하나 얻었을 뿐이었다.
“헤헤.”
“그런데 왜 그렇게 웃는 게냐? 이 할애비 불안하게스리.”
“현대 미술이 이 정도로 방대하다면……. 재미있는 걸 많이 시도해 볼 수 있겠다는 생각이 들어서요.”
“재미있는 거라니?”
“헤헤헤. 꼭 남의 작품에 저렇게 낙서를 할 필요는 없죠.”
벽에 한 낙서도 작품이 될 수 있다. 그렇다면 내가 공간에 무슨 짓을 하는 것도 다 작품이 될 수 있지 않겠는가.
그게 사람의 감정만 자극한다면 말이다.
