42화 매일 해야 하는 일
“그런 작가가 필요해.”
자신만만하게 말하는 제훈. 그는 전화를 끊고 다시 자리에 앉았다. 각종 자료를 보며 본인이 말한 작가를 찾으려는 모양이었다.
“으흠…….”
“뭐야, 그 뜨끈미지근한 표정은?”
화면과 제훈을 번갈아 보며 인상을 찡그리고 있는 윤채였다. 그런 그녀를 슬쩍 쳐다본 제훈은 질문을 던지고야 말았다.
“내가 찾은 것 같기도 하고 아닌 것 같기도 해서.”
윤채는 턱짓으로 화면을 가리켰다. 하지만 제훈이 말한 작가를 찾았다고 하기엔 애매한 얼굴이었다.
“화제성은 있을 것 같은 작가거든. 그건 확실해.”
“그럼 당장 말해야지.”
제훈은 자리에서 다시 벌떡 일어났다. 윤채의 자리로 가 그녀가 찾은 작가가 누군지 확인하기 위함이었다.
“근데 우리가 끌어올 수 있을 거란 보장이 없어.”
그녀의 목소리를 들으며 제훈은 화면을 바라보았다. 그 안에는 한 인터넷 기사가 떠 있었다.

“이민철 선생님의 손자?”
“아는 사람이야?”
“무려 억 단위로 첫 작품이 팔린 작가야. 당연히 알아 두긴 했지.”
작가 신윤성. 김제훈은 이미 그에 대해 일부분은 알고 있는 상태였다. 이 시장은 절대 신인 작가의 데뷔가 쉬운 시장이 아니다.
그런 와중에 첫 작품부터 1억 원에 팔린 신인이라니. 눈에 들어올 만했다.
“경화자제는 확실히 특색 있는 작품이긴 했어.”
“신 작가의 작품을 실제로 본 적이 있었어?”
그림의 진정한 힘은 실물을 봐야 했다.
사실 사진으로 대단하다고 칭송되는 그림을 봐 봤자 별다른 대단함을 느끼지 못하는 사람이 많았다.
그런 이들조차도 실제로 그 작품을 보고 나면 감상이 달라지는 경우가 부지기수였다.
“어째 반응이 진짜 그림을 봤다는 말투인데?”
“몰랐어? 오대전자 본사 로비에 걸려 있는 거.”
“진짜로?”
“응. 성 회장이 직접 샀다고 하더니만, 수장고에 넣어 놓는 대신 본사에 걸어 두었더라고.”
덕분에 제훈은 화제의 그림을 손쉽게 볼 수 있었다.
“알잖아, 신윤성 작가에 대해 말 많은 거.”
할아버지 잘 만난 작가. 미술계의 금수저 등등. 많은 이들이 신윤성 작가에 대해 떠들어 댔다. 그중 꽤 많은 자들이 질투 섞은 말로 헐뜯곤 했다.
“그래서 더 궁금하기도 했으니, 바로 본사로 달려가서 그림부터 확인했지.”
“어땠어?”
“어땠냐라…….”
제훈은 처음 그 그림을 봤을 때를 떠올렸다. 제일 먼저 든 생각은 간단했다.
“어처구니가 없었지.”
“뭐?”
“난 기사로 이미 신윤성이 몇 살인지 알고 갔거든.”
당시 나이 고작 7살. 만으로 따지면 6살인 어리다 못해 갓난아기에 가까운 아이였다.
그림은커녕 손에서 뭘 만들어도 칭찬받는 나이가 그 나이였다. 그런데 막상 본 신윤성의 그림은 독특했다.
“일단 독보적이었어. 그건 풍경화인 동시에 풍경화가 아니었거든.”
‘변화한 서울에서 자란 사람들’이란 명칭을 가지고 있는 그 작품은 풍경화였다. 그런데 그림이 얼마나 세밀한지, 그 안에 있는 사람들이 하나하나 모두 달라 보였다.
어지간한 인물화나 정물화보다도 정밀하게 표현된 물건들과 사람들. 멀리서 보는 재미와 가까이서 보는 독특함을 모두 갖춘 작품이었다.
“다른 건 몰라도 그림에 힘이 있는 건 확실했어. 로비에 들어가자마자 그 그림부터 눈에 들어왔으니까.”
그림에 대해 잘 모르는 이들도 종종 느끼는 힘. 그건 대작일수록 확실하게 있었다.
미술관이나 박물관에 갔을 때 어떤 특정 작품이 제일 눈에 들어온다면, 그건 그 작품이 가진 힘 때문이었다.
“알다시피, 어린 나이에 추상화나 이런 쪽에 두각을 보이는 애들은 있지. 난 처음에 신윤성도 그런 쪽일 줄 알았거든.”
어린 나이에 작가 활동을 하는 이들은 의외로 많았다. 그들의 실력을 부정하진 않는 제훈이었다.
다만 그들에게도 약점은 있었다. 다양한 화풍은 없는 경우가 많다는 점이었다.
해당 아이만의 독특한 그림. 소위 언론을 타는 유명한 아이들을 오직 그런 형식의 그림만 그릴 줄 아는 것이 대부분이었으니 말이다.
“그런데 아니었다는 거야?”
“아닐 것 같은 느낌이야. 그 그림 하나에도 이미 여러 종류의 기법이 녹아 있었거든.”
오대전자 본사의 로비에 간 제훈은 그림을 하나하나 뜯어보았다. 어느새 다가온 직원의 묘한 눈초릴 받으면서도 꿋꿋이 그림을 살핀 그. 덕분에 제훈은 하나의 결론을 얻을 수 있었다.
동양화 특유의 가느다란 선에 서양화 특유의 음영 진 색채감까지. 신윤성 작가의 그림은 신기하게도 기본을 다 갖춘 성인 화가의 느낌이 강했다.
“신윤성의 다음 전시전을 언제 어디서 하는지만 알면 좋을 텐데.”
아쉽다는 목소리로 중얼거리는 제훈을 보며 윤채는 입을 열었다.
“네가 그 정도로 말할 작가라면, 진짜 총감독의 초청을 받을지도 모르겠는데?”
“뭐?”
“이게 일반적인 행사면 나도 괜찮다고 생각할 거야. 근데 이건 베니스 비엔날레잖아.”
아트 페어와 비엔날레의 결정적인 차이는 그림의 판매 여부다. 한 가지 주제와 이슈를 바탕으로 하는 일종의 비영리 미술 연구 활동. 그게 비엔날레였으니.
작품을 팔지 않은 비엔날레의 특징상 흥행성을 위해서라도 특색 있는 작가의 초청 여부는 중요했다.
“그리고 여기 베니스의 꽃은 국가관이 모인 자르니디가 아니라 총감독이 하는 아르세날레니까.”
아르세날레와 자르니디. 양쪽에서 모두 해당 작가를 원할 경우 선택은 그 작가가 하는 법. 그리고 한국관보다는 아르세날레를 택할 가능성이 많은 게 현실이었다.
아무래도 주목받는 작가는 대부분 아르세날레에서 많이 나왔으니까. 그쪽으로 갈 확률이 높아 보였다.
“지금 네 말은…….”
“우리가 부른다고 해도 여기 안 올 수도 있다는 소리지.”

윤채의 말을 듣자마자 제훈은 허리를 폈다. 그러더니 금세 겉옷을 집어 드는 게 아닌가.
“뭐야. 어디 가게?”
“이러고 있을 때가 아니잖아. 올지 안 올지 모른다면, 빨리라도 행동해야 가능성이 올라가지 않겠어?”
그가 한국관의 예술 감독이 된 이유. 부지런한 새가 먹이를 더 잡는다는 모토에 걸맞게 행동이 빠른 덕분이었다.

미국에 온 지 며칠째 난 완벽하게 시차에 적응하고 있었다. 몸이 적응을 했으니, 미뤄 둔 것을 할 작정이었다.
‘하나씩 하자. 하나씩.’
결심을 굳힌 난 작은 공책을 꺼냈다. 미국에 가려고 결정한 날 부모님께 부탁해 선물로 받은 물건이었다.
캔버스와도 한지와도 다른 느낌의 종이. 하얀색의 네모반듯한 곳을 보며 난 연필을 들어 올렸다.
초등학교의 대표적인 방학 숙제인 그림일기. 난 이왕 그리는 것, 이 일로 내 그림의 약점을 보완하고 싶었다.
일명 연필 소묘라고 불리는 이 작업. 이 그림의 핵심은 관찰력이었다.
다만 낮에 있었던 내 일을 기억해서 그리는 것이기에 내 경우는 관찰력이 아닌 기억력이 중요했지만.
내가 누군가. 한때 조선에서 순간적인 장면을 포착해 그리는 건 날 따라올 사람이 없었다.
사건이 터지기 직전의 모습도, 순식간에 지나간 연인들 간의 일도, 난 다 잡아내서 그릴 수 있었다.
그런 나에게 낮의 일을 기억해 그리는 건 별다른 문제가 되지 않았다.
‘미술관에 간 거랑 그 이상한 시위한 사람을 표현하고 싶은데.’
잠시 고민을 한 난 연필을 들었다. 좋은 형태의 그림이 머릿속에 떠올랐기에.

얇은 연필은 내 손에 꼭 맞았다. 집중해서 한참을 그렸을 때. 난 문득 시선을 느꼈다.
고개를 들어 올리자 보이는 건 내 그림을 유심히 바라보고 계신 할아버지셨다.
‘언제 들어오신 거지?’
분명 소리를 듣지 못했는데, 어느새 앞에 계시는 할아버지셨다. 덕분에 당황해서 나도 모르게 큰 소리를 내고 말았다.
“할아버지?”
“……안 자고 그림 그리는 게야?”
“네에.”
“이 할애비 어린 시절엔 방학 숙제는 원래 몰아서 하는 거였는데. 흘흘.”
“다른 건 몰아서 해도 될 것 같은데. 이건 싫어요.”
‘안 된다’가 아닌 ‘싫다’.
이 둘의 차이는 확실했다. 하려면 못 할 건 없었다. 고작 며칠에 대해 그리는 그림일기. 마음만 먹는다면 하루 만에도 끝낼 수 있었다.
다만 내가 원하지 않을 뿐.
“싫다고?”
“네에, 그림은 꾸준히 그려야 해요. 가능하면 매일이요.”
전생에서 죽기 직전에도 붓을 놓지 못했던 이유. 그건 그림이 좋아서이기도 했지만, 내 강박 때문이기도 했다.
매일 그림을 그려야 조금씩이라도 나은 그림을 그릴 수 있다. 그게 힘들다고 손에서 붓을 놓는 순간, 실력은 퇴보하기 딱 좋았다.
“……그러니?”
“네에. 매일 약간이라도 그리지 않으면, 다시 시작하기 어렵거든요.”
나와 같이 그림을 시작한 동기들. 그들 중 그림을 끝까지 그리는 이들과 그렇지 않은 이들의 차이는 간단했다.
선 하나라도 좋았다. 꾸준히 그림을 그리는 자만이 결국 계속해서 내 동료로 남았다.
“흘흘. 그럼 이 할애비는 방해하지 않아야겠구나.”
“어? 하실 말씀 있으신 거 아니셨어요?”
“아니다. 다만 그렇다고 해도 얼른 자거라. 잠이 부족하면 못써요.”
“네에. 이거 금방 그려요, 할아버지. 너무 걱정 마세요. 곧 자도록 하겠습니다.”
어른의 걱정에 난 깍듯하게 대답했다. 그런 날 보며 할아버지는 잠시 머리를 쓰다듬어 주셨다.
잠시 내가 그린 그림일기를 물끄러미 보신 할아버지. 그 직후 별다른 말씀 없이 조용히 방을 나가셨다.

민철은 조용히 방문을 닫았다. 닫힌 방문을 가만히 바라보고 있는 그에게 부인이 질문을 던졌다.
“윤성이 재우고 나온 거예요?”
“아니, 못 했어.”
“지금 시간이 몇 시인데, 아직 애를 재우지 않고…….”
그를 타박하려던 그녀는 입을 다물었다. 남편의 표정이 어딘가 심상치 않았기에. 부부로 산 경력이 알려 주고 있었다.
지금 민철이 어딘가 울적하다는 것을.
“……안에서 무슨 일 있었어요?”
“윤성이가 그림일기를 쓰고 있더군.”
“아, 방학 숙제 중이었나 보네요.”
이때까지만 해도 그녀는 이해하지 못했다. 초등학교 1학년이 방학 숙제를 하는 게 왜 민철이 우울해할 일이 된다는 건지.
그런 그녀의 마음을 아는지 모르는지. 민철은 천천히 말문을 열었다. 시선은 여전히 닫힌 방문을 바라본 채로 말이다.
“매일 그림을 그려야 한다며 말을 하더라고. 그 어린 게.”
한때 민철은 매일같이 작업실에 있었다. 늘 그림을 생각하고 수시로 그림을 그렸다. 그런 그가 언제부터인가 그 행동을 멈췄다.
‘전시회를 많이 하면서부터였나.’
정확한 시기는 기억나지 않았다. 하지만 대충 추측할 수는 있었다.
초대전이 늘고, 그의 그림을 찾는 사람들이 많아지면서부터였던 것 같다. 그리고 그 순간부터 그의 작업 속도는 현저하게 느려졌다.
‘쯧. 나이 탓이 아니었던 게지.’
나이가 들어서 혹은 힘에 부쳐서 줄었다고 생각했다. 그러나 민철은 아이의 말을 듣는 순간 깨달았다. 그건 스스로 한 변명이라는 것을.
“윤성이가 그런 말을 했어요? 매일 그려야 한다고?”
“그랬지.”
“기특하네요. 이러다 정말 당신보다 어린 나이에 더 대단해지겠어요.”
놀리듯 즐거운 기색이 섞인 그녀의 말에 민철은 미소를 지었다. 재능이 심상치 않은 손자가 벌써부터 깨달음까지 가진 상태였다.
동시대에 저 아이를 막을 수 있는 사람이 나오려면 시간이 한참 걸리리라.
이미 많은 부분에서 완성된 아이와 달리 다른 아이들은 아직 한참은 성숙해야 할 테니까.
오늘 손자를 보자 확실히 알았다. 저 아이는 가만히 둬도 알아서 빛이 날 존재였다.
그 재능의 찬란함이 이 이민철마저도 눈이 부시게 만들 정도였으니.
그렇다면 이왕 드러날 재능. 그가 좀 더 일찍 세상에 보여도 좋지 않겠는가.
“흠. 한국에 돌아가면 바빠지겠구만. 흘흘.”
다시 대한민국에 돌아가면 할 일을 떠올리며 민철은 작게 웃음을 터뜨렸다.
