43화 제 작품을 보여 주고 싶다
정작 미국에는 제임스의 초대로 왔음에도 그를 첫날 전시회 외에는 볼 수 없었다. 이유는 간단했다. 그가 입원했으니까.
“몸은 좀 괜찮은 거예요?”
[애초부터 맞지도 않았어. 당연히 이상 없지.]“그거 진짜 맞았으면 이렇게 통화도 못 하는 거 아니에요?”
[그렇겠지. 저승길 걸어가는 중이었을지도 모르니까.]무슨 총에 맞은 당사자의 반응이 이렇다는 말인가. 속으로 어이없어하는 사이에도 그의 말은 계속되었다.
내가 전화를 걸어 준 게 기쁜 기색이 역력했다.
[톰이 절대 안정이라며 여기 넣지만 않았어도 내가 이러고 있지는 않을 텐데.]“이참에 주변 좀 잘 살펴요. 어떻게 사람이 총을 맞고 다녀요?”
[안 맞았다니까? 그냥 어떤 미친놈이 와서 쐈는데, 내가 잘 피한 거지.]말이 통하지 않았다. 난 스마트폰은 손에 든 채로 고개를 절레절레 저었다. 이런 내 반응에 그는 슬쩍 용건을 입에 담았다.
[벌써 한국에 돌아가는 건가?]“가야죠. 덕분에 미국에서 잘 있었는데, 인사도 못 하고 가네요.”
비행기부터 숙소까지. 제임스는 나와 할아버지를 위해 많은 것을 준비해 줬다. 덕분에 우리는 미국의 뉴욕에서 편하게 여행을 할 수 있었다.
[고마우면 나랑 같은 곳에 몸담는 것도 한번 생각해 봐.]같은 곳. 소속될 갤러리에 관한 이야기였다. 난 아직 이건 이르다고 생각했다. 난 제임스나 할아버지처럼 적극적으로 작품 활동을 하기엔 아직 준비해야 할 게 많았다.
“…….”
내가 딱히 대답이 없자 그는 가볍게 넘어가는 기색이었다. 통화 속 목소리는 금세 다른 주제로 넘어갔으니까.
[아차. 그리고 다음에 전시회 하면 나부터 불러.]“일단 할지 안 할지부터 물어봐야 하는 거 아니에요?”
[하겠지. 너도 속에 있는 걸 쏟아 내지 않는 걸 못 견디는 타입이니까.]“하게 되면 부르긴 할게요. 근데 전 당신처럼 숙소나 그 뭐냐. 비행기? 그 값은 못 줘요.”
못 하는 건 못한다고 미리 말해야 했다. 괜히 나중에 다른 말 나오기 전에.
[내가 꼬마 코 묻은 돈이나 쓰는 놈으로 보여? 걱정 말고 할 때 알려 주기나 해.]전화기 너머에서도 들리는 그의 오만한 어조. 그는 코웃음을 치며 당연하다는 반응이었다.

초등학교 1학년의 방학은 짧았다. 더군다나 할아버지께서 얼른 한국에 돌아가자고 하셨기에 내 미국 여행기는 더 금방 끝났다.
한국으로 돌아온 난 부모님에게 미국에서 겪은 일들을 알려 드렸다. 물론 미주알고주알 이야기하는 대신 내 그림을 보여 드리는 방법을 취했다.
백문이 불여일견. 백 번의 말보다 한 번 보는 게 확실하니까.
“우와, 이게 윤성이 다 네가 본 것들이야?”
“네에.”
두 분은 내가 그려온 그림일기를 보며 신기해하셨다. 특히나 아버지께서는 아예 코까지 박고 내 그림을 유심히 살펴보고 계셨다.
“이것도 좋지만, 엄마는 윤성이가 직접 말하는 것도 듣고 싶은데. 혹시 힘들진 않았고?”
역시나 외국에 다녀오면 제일 먼저 하는 질문이었다. 힘든 일이라. 순간 내 머릿속에 떠오르는 몇 가지가 있었다.
“음……. 우선 음식이 별로였어요.”
“응? 미국 음식은 그렇게 맛없진 않았을 텐데?”
“짜거나 느끼한 게 대부분이었거든요. 무슨 맛으로 먹는지 모르겠는 건 더 많았고요.”
왜에 가서도 음식 걱정은 덜했던 나다. 그런 내가 적응이 힘들 정도로 맛의 기준이 확연히 달랐다.
소금과 기름 범벅이 많았다. 단순한 걸 좋아하는 내 입맛에는 맞지 않았다.
“그리고 말도 제 생각보다 더 어려웠어요.”
사실 음식보다 이쪽이 더 힘들었다. 조선과 왜는 같은 한자 문화권이었다. 하지만 미국은 아예 다른 체계의 언어권이었으니.
내 생각보다 이 차이는 컸다. 여기서 어른들이 잘한다고 추켜세워 주는 정도로는 턱도 없었으니까.
그나마 다른 사람들도 나에게 하는 말들은 대부분 천천히 했다. 덕분에 내 부족한 영어 실력으로도 더듬거리며 알아들을 수 있었다.
하지만 다른 사람들끼리 하는 말은 제대로 파악하기가 무척 힘들었다.
“그림을 본 사람들의 감상을 곧바로 듣고 싶었는데, 잘 안 되더라고요.”
“그랬니?”
“네에. 진짜 뭔 뜻인지 이해하기 어려운 그림도 많았는데, 그 그림을 본 다른 사람들의 반응이 궁금했거든요.”
한국이었다면 바로 파악했으리라. 이제 이 시대의 모국어는 내게 익숙했으니까. 그러나 거긴 미국이었다.
“어쨌든 그런 부분이 좀 아쉬웠어요.”
내 말씀을 들은 두 분은 서로 눈을 마주치셨다. 그러더니 아버지께서 갑자기 내 머리를 헝클이시는 게 아닌가.
“우리 윤성이! 역시 영어는 쉽지 않지?”
“아버지, 제가 애인가요. 머리 망가집니다.”
8살. 조선이었다면 머리를 길게 땋았을 나이였다. 그랬다면 이렇게 어른들이 머리를 마구 부비시지도 않았으리라.
“으이구, 까칠하긴. 윤성이 너, 영어가 어려워도 빨리 배워야 할걸?”
“빨리요?”
배워야 하는 건 알고 있었다. 조선 시대의 주요 언어가 한자였다면, 이 시대의 주요 언어는 영어였으니까.
그런데 왜 빨리 배워야 한다는 말인가.
“짜잔.”
의문 어린 내 눈초리를 느꼈음일까. 아버지께서는 내게 불쑥 무언가를 내미셨다. 보아하니 미리 내게 주시려고 준비해 두신 게 틀림없었다.
꽤 두꺼운 종이로 출력된 그것. 딱딱한 영어가 아닌 흘림체에 가까운 말로 쓰여진 물건이었다.
“이게 뭐예요?”
“역시 국제 행사. 초청장부터가 아주 세련되었더라고.”
아버지의 말씀을 들으며 난 이게 뭔지 알아차렸다. 이미 제임스를 비롯해 할아버지까지. 내게 실마리를 던져 준 사람이 많았으니까.
“베니스군요.”
“딩동댕. 이 아빠가 찾아보니, 이거 일종의 학술 대회더라고.”
학교에서 강의를 하시는 아버지께선 그쪽으로 이해를 하신 듯 보였다. 아는 부분이 나와 흥분하신 듯 아버지의 목소리가 높아져만 갔다.
“크으, 우리 아들 나이에 학술 대회라니. 세상 사람들에게 외치고 싶다. 내 아들이 천재라고.”
호들갑을 떠는 아버지. 하지만 난 그쪽보다 더 신경 쓰이는 쪽이 있었으니. 어머니였다.
“저 이거 진짜 해도 되는 거예요?”
어른의 정신을 가지고 있는 나다. 눈치가 있었기에 이미 알고 있었다. 어머니께선 내가 이 분야에 들어가는 걸 좋아하지 않으신다는 것을.
다만 그런 어머니께서도 그림 그리는 것을 막지는 않으셨다. 내가 사 달라는 물감도, 도구도 모두 구입해 주셨으니까.
그랬기에 나 또한 자제했다. 작가로서의 활동이야 나중에 해도 되는 문제였기에. 나중에 내가 자란 뒤에는 내 의지를 관철시킬 자신이 있었다.
그런데 아버지께서 내게 종이를 내미는데도 어머니께서 별말씀이 없으시다니. 이건 암묵적인 허락에 가까웠다.
무언의 허락도 좋지만 그래도 난 확실한 것을 좋아했다. 어정쩡한 걸 참는 스타일이었다면, 내가 조선에서 그런 인생을 살았을 리가 없었다.
“이 엄마가 이 정도 살아 보니 깨달아지는 게 있더라고.”
내 질문에 어머니께선 미소를 지어 주셨다.
“내가 겪은 일이 맞을 수도 있지만, 사람에 따라 틀릴 수도 있다는 걸.”
“그럼…….”
“윤성이는 이 엄마보다 그림을 훨씬 좋아하니까. 이 엄마는 그걸 믿어 보기로 했어.”
이건 진짜 허락하신 거나 다름없었다. 내가 그림을 그리는 것을. 이 분야인 미술계로 가는 것을 말이다.
체통 없이 기쁨에 소리 지르려는 찰나. 내 머릿속을 스치는 의문이 있었다. 난 다시 아버지께서 주신 종이들을 내려다보았다.
그랬다. 종이가 한 장이 아닌 두 장이었다.
“근데 왜 두 개예요?”
비슷한 부분이 보였지만, 문서의 모양이 다른 걸 보니 다른 곳에서 온 것으로 보였다.
“어느 쪽을 선택할지 이 아빠도 궁금한걸?”
“둘 다는 못 하는 거죠?”
내 질문에 두 분은 서로를 쳐다보셨다. 아버지보다 이쪽에 대해 훨씬 많이 알고 계신 어머니. 그분은 양쪽을 바라보며 작게 한숨을 내쉬었다.
“못 할 거야. 그런 규정이 있는 건 아니지만, 양측 다 하나에 집중해 주길 바랄 테니까.”
일리가 있으신 말씀이셨다. 내가 양쪽을 번갈아 보는 사이 부모님께서는 슬슬 입을 여셨다.
“윤성아, 이 아빠가 미리 다 알아보긴 했는데. 이거 미술계의 올림픽으로 불린다며?”
“저도 그렇다고 들었어요.”
“이 아빠는 윤성이가 막 국가 대표로 여기 나가면 엄청 응원 잘할 자신 있는데.”
월드컵을 포함해 각종 국가 대항전을 좋아하시는 아버지다운 말씀이셨다. 늘 대한민국을 외치길 좋아하셨으니까.
“흠. 이 엄마는 생각이 좀 다른데.”
“아니, 왜?”
“한국관 쪽에선 그다지 빛을 본 작가가 없거든. 보통 그 해의 유명한 작가들은 다 아르세날레에서 나왔어.”
어머니의 말씀은 현실적이셨다. 늘 내 미래를 걱정하시는 분답게 지극히도 냉정하게 양쪽을 비교해 주셨다.
“그리고 아무래도 더 많은 사람이 몰리는 쪽도 한국관이 아니지. 국가관은 워낙 많아서 미국이나 몇몇 유럽 쪽에 사람이 몰리거든.”
“그런…….”
차갑다고 하면 차가운 어머니의 말에 아버지는 말문이 막히셨다. 어쩐지 기가 죽어 보이는 아버지를 보며 난 빙그레 웃음을 지었다.
여기선 내가 끼어들어야 했다.
“어머니. 전 한국관 쪽을 갈 건데요. 자르디니라고 하는 그거요.”
내 말에 두 분의 표정이 변하시는 것이 보였다. 명백히 희비가 엇갈리는 모습이셨다.
“아니, 대체 왜……. 이쪽이 더 본 행사라니까. 윤성아?”
“역시 내 아들. 미술계 올림픽이라니. 피가 끓지?”
“피가 끓으면 죽어요, 아버지. 그게 아니라 어머니 말씀 때문에요.”
“내 말?”
“한국관에서는 그다지 빛을 본 작가가 탄생한 적이 없다면서요. 그 해의 유망한 화가들은 다 아르세날레에서 나왔다고.”
내 말을 들은 어머니는 더 알아듣지 못하는 얼굴이셨다. 이해했다. 일반적으로는 더 잘될 가능성이 높은 쪽을 택하는 것이 사람이었으니.
다만 내가 좀 청개구리 심보가 다분할 뿐.
“좀 실패해도 괜찮아요. 애초부터 제가 원한 건 엄청난 명성이나 이런 게 아니라서요.”
사실이었다. 내게 제일 중요한 건 내가 원하는 작품을 만들어 내는 것이었다. 그게 다른 이들의 가지고 싶은 소유욕을 자극한다면, 금상첨화였다.
내가 진정으로 출세 가도만 원했다면, 내 이전 생이 그랬을 리가 없었다.
“그리고 솔직히 보여 주고 싶기도 해요.”
“보여 주고 싶다니?”
“제가 이번에 미국가서 느낀 게 뭔 줄 아세요?”
어머니의 질문에 난 질문으로 답했다. 물론 이 질문에 답을 한 것도 나였다.
“사람이란 존재가 생각보다 비슷하다는 거예요.”
조선에서 색목인이라고 불렸던 자들. 외향이 너무도 다른 인종이었기에 아예 다른 존재 취급을 했었다.
하지만 막상 그 나라에 가 보니 깨달았다. 사람이란 존재는 생각보다 비슷했다. 남이 가지고 싶은 건 나도 가지길 원했다.
이건 내게 좋아 보이는 그림은 남도 좋게 보인다는 뜻이기도 했다. 그리고 충격적인 작품은 어디서든 시선을 끈다는 점. 그것도 유사했다.
“전 한국관에서 제 작품으로 보여 주고 싶어요.”
“보여 주고 싶다니…….”
“제 작품이 제일 이야기할 게 많다는 것을요.”
원래 관심이 가면 말할 게 많고, 말이 많이 돌면 가지고 싶어지는 법 아니겠는가.
이야기가 있고, 눈길이 가는 작품. 난 한국관에서 거기 있는 그 누구보다 이런 작품을 만들어 내고 싶었다.
내 말을 들은 어머니는 잠시 가만히 계셨다. 그러시더니 은근한 한숨을 내쉬셨다. 그 안에는 어딘가 안타깝다는 기색이 포함되어 있었다.
“네가 아르세날레에 나가지 않는다고 하면, 이건 필요 없겠다.”
“이거요?”
이거라니. 난 어머니가 꺼내시는 물건을 보며 눈이 동그랗게 변했다.
