63화 참고로 에일은 아주 부자 학교
누군가의 시선으로 바라본 창문 밖의 운동장의 모습. 작가가 학생임을 알게 되자 그는 그게 본인의 눈으로 본 풍경이라는 걸 알 수 있었다.
공을 차는 학생, 풋풋한 연애를 하는 듯한 모습. A4 사이즈에 가까운 그 그림에는 고스란히 학교 운동장의 모습이 담겨 있었다.
어떤 특별한 모습도 아닌 고작해야 운동장 풍경. 그럼에도 당시 그의 눈길을 사로잡은 그림이었다.
“창문 속의 운동장이 작품명인데, 독특했다라……. 추상화였습니까?”
요즘 현대 미술의 트렌드가 그쪽이긴 했다. 그렇기에 다른 교수의 질문은 타당했다.
하지만 실제 그 작품을 본 그는 고개를 저었다.
“풍경화에 가까웠습니다. 근데 전 수채화와 유화를 사용한 게 인상적이었습니다. 아크릴은 안 쓴 그림이었거든요.”
수채화와 유화의 특징을 모두 가진 게 아크릴 물감이었다. 가장 현대적인 물감이기도 했으니.
그런데 그 둘을 배제하였기에 더 독특한 느낌을 가진 작품이었다.
둘을 섞은 것이 아니라 서로가 교묘히 영역을 지키고 있는 그 경계선이 가진 기이함.
작가 본인이 어지간히 물감 다루는 실력이 있지 않은 이상 나오기 어려운 작품이었다.
“그런 작품을 그린 학생이 에일대에 지원하다니. 이 학생을 맞으려면 조건 좀 늘려야 할 것 같습니다.”
“조건이요?”
“고작 8장의 포트폴리오를 보고도 우리가 한눈에 알아본 학생입니다. 수십 장 이상 받는 다른 학교에서 이런 학생을 놓칠 것 같습니까?”
그의 질문에 다른 교수들은 연신 헛기침을 터뜨렸다.
학교만 학생을 가려 뽑는 게 아니었다. 학생 또한 학교를 선택해서 갈 수 있었으니까.
“크흠.”
“확실히. 이 학생의 경우 세계 곳곳의 대학에 지원했겠고, 합격증도 받아 냈겠죠.”
합격과 불합격을 이야기하는 다른 학생들과 확연하게 다른 모습이었다. 줄리아나는 이런 교수들의 분위기를 느꼈음에도 한 번 더 확인 절차를 밟았다.
“잠깐만요. 그럼 이 학생은 합격입니까?”
“그야 당연하죠. 이런 학생을 다른 학교로 뺏기면 오히려 위험합니다.”
에일대가 최고일 수 있는 이유. 그건 늘 우수한 학생이 자라 뛰어난 업계의 일원이 되기 때문이었다.
만약 이런 선순환 구조가 없었다면, 지금의 에일대는 있을 수 없었다.
“그럼 문제는 지원이겠군요.”
줄리아나의 말에 다른 교수들도 고개를 끄덕였다. 에일대의 학비는 절대 싼 편은 아니었다.
주립대가 아닌 사립인 만큼 어지간한 직장인의 연봉보다도 돈이 많이 들어갔으니까.
“지원에 대한 문제는 일단 합격생들을 전부 정한 뒤에 이야기 나누는 게 좋을 듯하네요. 다들 어찌 생각하십니까?”
“그게 좋겠네요.”
“그럼 우선 이것들부터 마무리 짓죠.”
그렇게 아직은 이름을 모르는 포트폴리오. 395번 학생의 서류들은 온전한 합격생을 놓는 곳으로 옮겨졌다.

원래대로면 제임스를 만날 예정이었다. 그러나 나와 아버진 그럴 수 없었다.
“대체 무슨 인생을 사는 거예요? 총 맞는 것도 모자라 테러라니.”
그가 어떤 괴한에게 칼을 맞아 입원을 했다는 소식을 들었기에. 아무리 미국이라지만 이 사람은 무슨 인생을 이렇게나 다이내믹하게 산다는 말인가.
그 순간 내가 떠올린 건 몇 년 전 할아버지와 함께 미국에 왔을 때의 일이었다.
당시 그는 나와 할아버지가 한국에 들어오기 전 마지막 작별 인사를 할 수가 없었다.
어떤 원한을 가진 이에게 총을 맞을 뻔해 병원에 있었으니까. 근데 이번은 총이 아닌 칼에 맞을 뻔했단다.
[일단 그 말은 다 틀렸어. 난 당시 총을 맞지도 않았고, 이번에도 테러는 무슨. 그냥 강도 좀 만난 거지.]말은 참 잘했다. 전화기 너머에서 들리는 불퉁한 목소리를 보니 크게 걱정할 필요는 없는 모양이었다.
“이번에도 미국에서는 못 보고 가는 거 아니에요?”
[그게 무슨 소리야? 나한테 선물도 가져온다며? 내가 그걸 얼마나 기대하고 있는데! 안 만나겠다고?]내 말이 끝나기 무섭게 전화기에서 흥분한 목소리가 들려왔다. 만약 눈앞에 있었다면 내게 바짝 다가와 말했을 게 뻔했다.
“아니, 내가 안 만나려는 게 아니라 상황이 그렇잖아요. 또 입원했다면서요.”
[이게 다 톰이 과보호해서 그래.]내가 볼 때 이건 과보호라기보단 얌전히 있길 바라는 쪽이 분명했다. 그나마 병원에 들어간 제임스는 무탈했으니까.
“그냥 이 정도면, 차라리 당신이 다음번에 한국에 올 때 만나러 오는 게 나을 것 같은데.”
[그건 절대 반대야! 일단…… 어디 보자. 이번에 미국에 얼마나 있는데?]“음, 할 일이 생각보다 많아서요. 한 달쯤 있을 겁니다.”
난 이번 겨울 방학의 대부분을 이 나라에서 보내기로 마음먹었다. 덕분에 내겐 상당히 많은 시간이 주어졌다.
[꽤 오래 있네? 날 만나서 선물 주는 게 메인 용건은 아닐 테고.]“그것도 용건 중 하나긴 한데요.”
[그런 개도 믿지 않을 소리는 집어치우고…… 어디 보자. 오! 너 설마 진짜 라고시안이랑 계약 해지하게?]“글쎄요.”
[뭐야, 반응 보니 이것도 아닌 것 같은데. 뭐 면접이라도 보러 온 거야?]“면접이요?”
면접. 이 말을 듣는 순간 내 머릿속을 스치는 것이 있었으니.
‘그러고 보니, 에일대는 왜 면접 이야기가 없지?’
물론 서류부터 떨어졌을 수도 있었다. 무조건 붙는다는 건 분명 내 오만일 수 있었기에.
[어, 지금 1월이잖아. 딱 대학 입학 면접할 때 아닌가? 나 때는 무조건 직접 대면 면접이었는데. 요즘도 그런가 해서.]“지금이 면접 시즌이긴 하죠?”
[그럼. 보통 교수진이 오거나 해당 학교 졸업생들이 간단하게 하는 형식이니까. 네 경우는 전화나 화상 인터뷰 정도로 간단히 할걸?]“다른 데도 주로 그렇긴 했죠.”
얼리 어드미션. 빨리 지원을 받는 모든 대학이 그렇게 했다. 내가 지원한 유럽의 대학들의 대다수가 그런 방식을 택했으니까.
“에일은 아직 제게 면접 보잔 소리는 없었거든요. 떨어뜨렸으려나?”
[설마. 거기 교수들이 눈이 달렸으면, 그건 아닐걸. 면접 없이 합격하는 경우도 있으니까. 오히려 그쪽이 가능성이 크지.]입시를 위한 면접을 무조건적으로 하는 건 아니란 소리였다. 고개를 끄덕이던 난 문득 머릿속을 스치는 생각이 있었다.
‘설마?’
어쩌면 내 생각이 맞을 수도 있었다. 성격 급한 난 얼른 내 생각이 맞았는지 틀렸는지 확인해 보고 싶었다.
“제임스. 잠깐 전화 좀 끊어 봐요.”
[뭐? 갑자기?]“일단 당신 괜찮은 거 확인했으니, 나중에 연락하죠.”
[꼭 해라. 며칠만 있으면 바로 여기서 나갈 수 있으니까. 그때까지 안 하면 내가 먼저 할 거니까.]“걱정 마요. 저 한 달은 여기 있는다니까요? 그사이 우리 한 번은 볼 수 있겠죠.”
전화를 끊은 난 메일을 열어 보았다. 미국에 오게 되면 먼저 연락을 하라며 준 전화번호. 그걸 확인하기 위함이었으니.
전화번호와 내 폰에 등록된 번호를 한 번 더 확인한 난 스마트폰을 눌렀다. 이미 해외에서 사용할 수 있도록 맞춰 놓았기에 어려움은 없었다.
[신 작가! 이렇게 전화를 한 걸 보니 미국인 게로군?]나 또한 메일로 상대방에게 내 전화번호를 알려 준 상태였다. 그 때문일까. 전화를 하자마자 상대방은 내가 누군지 알아차린 기색이셨다.
“미국에서의 전화 통화는 처음이군요, 교수님.”
[언제 비행기인지는 메일로 알려 줘서 알고는 있었네만. 이렇게 빨리 연락을 줄 줄이야. 후후후.]“제가 미국에 오기로 결정한데 가장 큰 역할을 하신 분이시니, 당연히 먼저 연락을 드려야죠.”
말은 이렇게 해도 원래 내 뜻은 그게 아니었다.
아무래도 직접 보는 건 처음이지 않은가. 그렇기에 난 이 교수님과의 만남을 제일 뒤로 미뤄 둔 상태였다.
하지만 방금 든 내 생각이 맞는다면, 이 만남은 빨리 가지는 게 좋았다.
“걱정이요?”
[신 작가의 실력은 걱정할 게 없으니, 다른 게 걱정이긴 했지.]확실히 메일과 달리 전화는 더 많은 감정을 느낄 수 있었다. 잔잔한 목소리로 하는 리처드 교수의 말에는 설득력이 깃들어 있었다.
[에일대는 소통을 중시하거든. 그래서 아무래도 외국인 학생들의 언어적 능력을 좀 보는 편이라.]“제가 떨어질지도 모른다고 생각하셨군요?”
웃음기가 섞인 내 말에 상대 또한 미미하게 웃으며 답했다.
[후후후. 여차하면 내가 힘 좀 써 볼까 했는데, 보아하니 그럴 필요가 없었구만.]“떨어뜨리면 다른 데 가면 되는 거니까요.”
[아니, 그건 내가 곤란하지. 이렇게 날 만나러 온 거 보니, 신 작가도 에일 쪽에 무게를 두고 있는 거 같은데. 맞나?]“뭐. 우선순위로 고려 중이긴 합니다만.”
[그 우선순위, 내가 단박에 1순위로 만들어 주지. 에일에 언제 올 수 있는지 좀 말해 보게.]“그걸 어찌 만들어 주실 건데요?”
무조건 1순위를 만들겠다니. 내 웃음기 섞인 대답에 상대방도 유쾌하게 답을 해 주셨다.
[뭐니 뭐니 해도 학생을 붙잡는 데는 학교가 얼마나 좋은 곳인지 보여 주는 게 제일 아니겠나?]“학교 탐방이라면, 한번 가 볼 생각이긴 했습니다.”
[이래 봬도 내가 여기서 일하지 않나. 단순히 겉모습만 보는 학교 탐방보다야 훨씬 많은 것을 보여 줄 수 있지 않겠어?]“많은 거요?”
[그래. 예를 들면…… 아니다. 이건 날 찾아오면 보여 주는 게 낫겠군. 후후후.]“뭔데요? 힌트나 좀 주시죠.”
[궁금하면 얼른 오는 게 어떤가. 내가 보여 주고 싶은 게 진짜 많은데 말이지. 참고로 에일은 아주, 매우, 무척이나! 부자 학교라네.]힌트를 달라고 했더니 돈이 많다고 답하는 교수님이라니.
대체 뭘 보여 줄 생각인지 모르겠다. 덕분에 난 흥미가 솟는 것을 느꼈다.
돈이 많다고 하는 세계 각지의 대학들.
그중에서도 늘 학교 보유금이 세계에서 세 손가락 안에 드는 게 에일이었다.
지금도 미국 화폐로 167억 달러. 한국 돈으로 무려 20조 원이 넘는 돈을 가지고 있는 학교였으니.
덕분에 아이비리그 중 가장 장학금이 풍부한 학교로도 유명했다. 재정적으로 넉넉하기에 돈에 구애받지 않는 학교. 그게 에일대였다.
확실히 에일대학교는 부자 학교이긴 했다. 거기서 일하는 교수가 이렇게 말할 정도면 지원도 잘해 주는 모양이었다.
순간적으로 고민했다. 져녁 늦게는 라고시안에 가야 했다. 약속을 안 지키는 건 내가 싫어하는 것이었으니. 이번 저녁 약속은 내 계약과도 관련된 약속인 만큼 중요했다.
하지만 내겐 아직 오늘 하루의 시간이 많이 남아 있었다. 아직 채 점심도 되지 않은 시간이었기에.
에일대가 위치한 곳인 코네티컷주와 뉴욕의 거리는 100km. 차로 충분히 시간 내에 왔다 갔다 할 수 있었다.
‘아버지께서 에일대를 기대하고 계시긴 했지.’
어른들에게 저 대학은 진짜 특별하긴 한 모양이었다. 특히나 아버지처럼 학문적인 공부를 하신 분은 더더욱.
생각해 보니 그 또한 도화서를 들어가기 전에는 그랬던 것도 같았다.
막상 들어가고 나서야 별거 없어서 때려치웠지만. 가기 전에는 얼마나 학수고대했던가.
‘거기다 내 예상이 맞는다면, 빨리 뵙는 게 좋을 것도 같고.’
대충 속으로 계산을 끝낸 나였다. 난 전화기를 손에 든 채 다시 입을 열었다.
“지금 혹시 시간 되십니까?”
[나야 오늘은 한가한데……. 오! 지금 올 생각인 건가?]내가 할 말이 무엇인지 눈치채신 교수님. 전화 너머에서 반색하시는 것이 느껴졌다.
