“이미 뉴욕에 며칠 전에 들어왔습니다. 교수님께서 시간만 되시면 지금 찾아뵙도록 하겠습니다.”
[그거 아주 그레잇한 생각이야! 당장 오게나. 내 사무실에 맛있는 음료를 준비해 놓을 테니.]저쪽은 괜찮았다. 그렇다면 이쪽만 승낙이 떨어지면 되는 거 아니겠는가.
난 잠시 폰에 손을 대 말소리가 들어가는 걸 막았다.
어차피 한국어라 못 알아들으실 것 같긴 했지만. 이건 기분 문제였으니.
“아버지, 오늘 우리 에일대 갈까요?”
“오늘? 지금 말하는 거야?”
갑작스러운 내 제안에 당황하신 듯 아버지께서는 두 눈이 커다랗게 변하셨다.
옆에서 가만히 통화를 하던 아들이 갑자기 에일대를 가자고 했으니. 당연한 반응이긴 했다.
“네, 혹시 가기 싫으시다면…….”
“아니! 완전 괜찮지!”
내 말이 끝나기도 전에 아버지께선 얼른 답하셨다. 정말로 기대하고 계신 것이 분명했다.
“난 윤성이 네가 일부러 나중에 가려는 줄 알고 기다리고 있었던 거야.”
“리처드 교수님께서 오늘 오면 좋은 데 많이 보여 준다고 하셔서요.”
“직접? 손수 안내해 주시겠대?”
“예, 뭐. 일단 그렇다고는 하시는데요.”
혹시나 나중에 가서 바뀔 수도 있는 법. 그렇기에 난 애매하게 답했다.
그러나 아버지는 내 목소리에 담긴 애매함보다는 이야기에 더 집중하셨다.
“와, 교수님이 진짜 내 아들을 잘 보고 있는 모양인데? 아직 입학도 안 한 학생을 직접 안내해 주겠다고 하시다니.”
그건 사실이었다. 세상의 어느 교수가 아직 입학도 결정되지 않은 학생에게 학교 관광을 시켜 주겠다고 하겠는가.
어쩌다 있다고 해도 그런 교수가 많을 리 없었다.
“이참에 아버지께서도 가서 명함 교환하세요. 같은 교수시잖아요.”
“흠흠, 윤성아. 아빠는 교수라고 하기엔 좀…….”
정교수와 시간 강사. 이제는 그 차이를 잘 알고 있는 나였다. 한국 사회에서 저 둘의 격차는 꽤 컸다.
특히나 내가 알기로 리처드 교수는 보통의 교수도 아니었다. 에일대에서도 몇 없는 테뉴어. 그는 정년퇴직이 없이 죽을 때까지 에일대 교수를 할 수 있었다.
하지만 그럼에도 난 이렇게 말했다.
“대학교에서 강의하시면 다 교수님이시죠. 그리고 교수가 아닌 제 보호자로서도 만나 봬야 하지 않으시겠어요?”
“그건 그런데…… 역시 가서 인사드려서 나쁠 건 없겠지? 내 아들 잘 부탁한다고도 말해야 하니까.”
자칫하면 가라앉을 뻔한 분위기를 아버지께서는 아무렇지도 않게 넘기셨다. 그러더니 금세 어떤 말을 해야 좋을지 고민하시는 게 아닌가.
“그럼 동의하신 거로 알고. 잠시만요.”
아버지께서 홀로 가만히 영어를 중얼거리시는 동안 난 전화를 끝내기로 했다.
“교수님. 지금 바로 가겠습니다. 한…… 2시간 정도면 교수님 연구실 앞에 갈 수 있을 것 같습니다.”
[오! 굿 보이! 얼른 오게나. 그럼 이만 끊지. 자네 오기 전에 여기 좀 치워 놓긴 해야겠구만. 후후.]에일대에 대한 입학 여부는 아직 결정되지 않았다.
하지만 만약 한다면 이거 하나는 확실해 보였다.
아무래도 난 이 교수님과는 잘 맞을 모양이었다. 내가 끊겠다고 하기도 전에 교수님 측에서 먼저 이렇게 말씀하시는 걸 보니.
“예. 그럼 곧 뵙겠습니다, 교수님.”

뉴욕에서 에일대학교는 멀지 않았다. 북쪽으로 조금만 올라가면 에일이 나왔으니까.
“여기서부터가 다 에일대래. 진짜 큰 것 같아. 윤성아.”
아버지의 말처럼 거대한 도시 하나가 에일대였다. 그야말로 도시 느낌이 물씬 풍겼던 뉴욕과 달리 어딘가 한적한 기분도 들었다.
“방학인데도 사람이 꽤 많이 보이네요.”
책을 든 학생들부터 떠들며 지나가는 사람들까지. 나와 아버지는 바쁘게 돌아다니는 이들을 손쉽게 볼 수 있었다.
“우리 교수님 뵙고도 우리끼리 한번 둘러볼래? 여기 기념품 파는 곳에서 기념품도 사 가고.”
“기념품이요?”
“응. 네 엄마랑 할아버지, 할머니께도 드리자. 좋아하실걸?”
확신에 차서 말씀하시는 아버지. 진짜로 이 대학을 좋아하고 계시는 게 느껴졌다.
내가 여기 입학하면 매년 오실 텐데, 그때마다 계속 이렇게 좋아해 주실지 알 수 없었다.
“교수님 앞에서 기념품을 막 사 가긴 좀 그렇잖아. 우리 아들 체면도 있는데.”
본인 체면은 상관없으신가 보다. 내 체면만 신경 쓰시는 걸 보니.
적당히 건물들을 둘러본 난 폰을 들었다. 교수님의 연구실을 다시 확인하기 위함이었다.
“우선 교수님 뵈러 가시죠.”
“그러자. 기다리시게 하면 안 되니까.”
상당히 긴 고풍스러운 복도를 지나 도착한 곳. 문 옆에 붙은 교수님의 성함을 확인한 난 문을 두드렸다.
똑똑―
“들어오게나.”
연구실은 꽤 넓었다. 각종 그림이 세워져 있는 것부터 시작해 이름 모를 기계들까지. 처음 내 눈에 들어온 연구실의 풍경이었다.
“처음 뵙겠습니다, 교수님. 윤성 신입니다.”
이름에서 성을 뒤로하며 난 내 소개를 했다.
“오. 신 작가! 나야말로 엄청나게 반갑지.”
백발을 곱게 빗어 넘기시고 안경을 쓰신 노신사. 내가 인터넷에서 찾은 사진 그대로의 모습을 한 교수님이 내 눈앞에 계셨다.
“리처드 스미스. 그냥 원래 하던 대로 리처드라고 부르면 된다네.”
권위보다는 다정함이 깃든 말투셨다. 물론 난 교수님을 향해 아버지를 소개해 드리는 것도 잊지 않았다.
“이쪽은 제 부친이신 주혁 신이십니다. 제 아버지께서도 교수님같이 학생들을 지도하고 계세요.”
“신 작가에게 이야기 많이 들었네. 아직 젊은데 아들도 잘 키우고 본인도 일을 잘하다니. 대단하구만.”
“아이고. 아닙니다, 교수님. 저야말로 뵙게 돼서 영광입니다.”
인사를 나눈 우리에게 교수님께서는 간단한 음료를 내주셨다. 그러시더니 대뜸 본론을 꺼내시는 게 아닌가.
“학교는 한번 봤나? 어떤가. 막 오고 싶어지지는 않고?”
“건물이 예쁘긴 했습니다.”
“저런. 아직 겉만 본 모양이구만. 역시 내가 안내해 주기로 하길 잘했군.”
고개를 끄덕거리시던 교수님께서는 단번에 들고 계신 주스를 들이켜셨다. 그러더니 아예 자리에서 일어나는 것이 어떤지 물어보셨다.
“그거 들고 교정을 좀 걸어 보는 게 어떤가 싶은데.”
난 들고 있는 아이스초코를 바라보았다. 장갑도 끼고 있겠다, 문제가 될 것 같지는 않았다.
“좋습니다. 그럼 일어나시죠.”

누가 그림 공부하는 사람 아니랄까 봐. 교수님께서 제일 먼저 우릴 데려가신 곳은 에일대 내의 미술관이었다.
“에일 미술관은 대학교 미술관에서도 손에 꼽히지. 여기에 고흐의 그림이나 자네 나라의 박남준 작품도 있거든.”
“확실히 이건 좋네요.”
미술관은 거대했다. 동시에 내 생각보다 많은 이들이 그 안에 있었다.
“학교 내에 이런 미술관이 있으면, 머리 식힐 때 오기 딱 좋겠네요.”
“후후, 이미 그렇게 하는 학생들도 꽤 많지.”
다른 사람들의 작품을 감상하는 것. 그 자체만으로도 내 영감이 마르지 않게 만들어 준다.
계속 그리기만 하고 다른 이들의 작품을 보지 않으면 언젠가는 도태될 것이 분명했다.
그렇기에 난 과거에도 꾸준히 다른 이들의 작품을 봤다. 수중에 돈이 없었기에 사지 못했을 뿐. 보는 걸 멈추진 않았다.
‘에일이 미술 쪽에서 잘나가는 이유엔 이 미술관도 있겠지.’
미술관에는 다양한 작품들이 전시되어 있었다. 이 정도 규모가 학교 내에 존재하다니. 에일 정도가 아니면 불가능한 일이리라.
“이 미술관이야 내가 옆에 있는 것보단 머리 식힐 때 혼자 오는 게 좋을 테니. 여기까지만 보자고.”
“예, 그럴 생각이긴 했어요.”
일리가 있는 말이었다. 찬찬히 감상을 한다면 더 많은 느낌을 받을 수 있으리라.
“그리고 잘만 하면 신 작가 작품도 걸릴 수 있지 않겠어?”
“제 작품이라…….”
난 말끝을 흐리며 주변을 둘러보았다. 세계 각지에서 활동하는 화가들의 작품이 걸려 있는 미술관이었다.
“여긴 뮤지엄이 아닌 갤러리야. 그림이 걸려도 팔 수 있지. 후후.”
그건 신기하긴 했다. 원래 이런 대학 내 미술관은 딱 보관용인 줄 알았으니까. 그래서 이름도 에일대 옆에 뮤지엄이 붙지 않고 갤러리가 붙은 모양이었다.
딱히 그림을 팔지 못할까 고민한 건 아니었다. 다만 이 그림들을 보다 드는 생각이 있었던 것뿐.
“작업을 많이 해야겠군요.”
과거도 그렇고 현재도 그랬다. 오랜 세월 사람들에게 사랑받는 그림을 그리는 화가들. 그들은 모두 끊임없이 그리는 사람들이었다.
‘내가 최근 좀 덜 그리긴 했지.’
새로 태어난 세상에 적응한다는 이유로. 동시에 전생에 한 번도 겪어 보지 못한 각종 도구를 배운다는 핑계를 대며 그림을 덜 그린 게 사실이긴 했다.
‘작업실에 있는 그림들도 채 1천이 되지 않으니.’
라고시안에 보낸 작품은 고작 24점. 그걸 더한다고 해도 내가 9년간 그린 작품의 숫자는 수백에 불과했다.
그중 정말로 내어놓을 수 있을 만한 작품은 더 적었다. 완벽하지 않은 그림을 이런 작품들 옆에 거는 건 내가 사양하고 싶었기에.
‘역시 여길 와 보길 잘했어.’
잠시나마 나태해졌던 마음을 다잡을 수 있었다. 새로운 환경은 그만큼 날 두근거리게 만들었으니.
“그럼 내가 진짜 보여 주고 싶었던 데를 가 볼까? 후후.”
교수님의 말에 우린 천천히 교정을 거닐었다. 한국에선 잘 볼 수 없는 건물들 사이를 지나 세련된 건축물 앞에 도달했다.
“이건…….”
“우리 에일대 미대의 장점이 뭔지 아나? 바로 커뮤니티야. 그런 의미에서 여긴 서로 소통하기 좋은 공간이지.”
벽의 절반이 유리도 된 방들투성이였다. 덕분에 그 안이 일부 들여다보였기에 난 이곳의 정체를 쉽게 추측할 수 있었다.
“공개 작업실이군요.”
“정확하지. 학생들에게 주어지는 일종의 개인 스튜디오라네.”
과연. 이런 공간을 학생들 개개인에게 주다니. 이쯤 되니 왜 에일이 소수 정예라고 불리는지 알 수 있었다.
이런 공간을 받은 학생이 많았다간 제아무리 부자 학교인 에일이라도 재정이 파탄 나는 건 시간문제이리라.
“이 개인 스튜디오에 들어가는 건 어지간해선 모두 지원된다네.”
심지어 지원도 풍부하단다. 내가 믿을 수 없다는 듯 교수님을 빤히 바라보다 이런 말을 덧붙이시긴 했다.
“그렇다고 엄청나게 비싸고 터무니없는 것까진 지원하지 않으니. 더 필요하면 그건 작가가 구해야겠지만. 후후후.”
“이걸 진짜 혼자만의 공간으로 준다기엔…… 상당히 큰데요.”
“학부생에게 이 정도 지원을 해 주는 곳은 많지 않을 것이야.”
“……그만큼 많은 이들에게 모습을 보이는 거군요.”
바로 나만 해도 안쪽의 공간을 볼 수 있었다. 물론 유리로 된 부분은 일부였기에 전부 볼 수 있는 건 아니었다.
하지만 그렇다고 해도 개방된 공간이란 건 분명했다.
“후후, 왜 자신 없나? 원한다면 저 유리들을 가려 줄 수는 있네만.”
“그럴 리가요.”
지금 내게 자신 없냐고 묻다니. 진짜 이 교수님도 참 보통은 아니셨다.
“내 그리 말할 줄 알았지.”
한시도 지체하지 않고 나온 내 대답에 만족하신 듯 교수님께서는 흐뭇하게 웃으셨다.
어쩐지 귀여운 어린애를 바라보는 듯한 그 시선을 받는 난 귀가 화끈해졌다.
얼굴도 식힐 겸 난 얼른 궁금한 걸 물어보았다. 마침 할 질문은 무궁무진하게 많았다.
“이렇게 생긴 걸 보니 여기 찾아오는 사람들이 많나 보네요?”
“많지. 일단 이번 주만 해도 수십은 다녀갔을 테니까.”
한 주에 수십. 절대 적은 숫자는 아니었다. 오는 사람 전부가 나처럼 학교 탐방하러 오는 학생은 아닐 것이니.
“보통 누가 오는데요?”
지금 여기에 오는 사람들. 그들은 바꿔 말하면 내가 여길 온다면 많이 만나게 될 이들이었기에. 당연히 물어볼 수밖에 없었다.
