93화 평균 그림 가격을 상향하자
이번 내 전시회 일정은 간단했다. 한국에서 2주. 미국에서 3주. 둘 다 개인전치곤 굉장히 짧게 하는 것이었다.
일반적인 보통의 전시회는 한 달을 넘게 했다. 대관을 하는 것부터 준비할 시작해 할 일이 태산이었으니.
이왕 시작하는 것 아예 뽕을 뽑겠다는 마인드이리라.
그러나 내 경우는 달랐다.
총기간은 한 달이 넘었다. 5주였으니까. 하지만 실질적으로 각 나라에서 하는 건 채 한 달이 되지 않았으니.
‘기간이 짧아 다 못 팔 것이라 예상했는데…… 오히려 짧아서 더 잘 팔릴 줄이야.’
작품 수집가들에게 이번 전시회가 그야말로 놓칠 수 없는 기회였는 모양이었다.
전시회 첫날부터 사람이 몰리더니, 그림이 팔리는 시간 또한 일반적이지 않을 줄은 몰랐다.
그러니 필립이 저런 말을 하는 것이리라. 이런 속도면 미국의 뉴욕에서 전시회를 할 때는 정말 다 팔린 상태일 수 있었기에.
“으흠……. 이미 사 갈 사람은 다 사 간 거 아닐까요? 매진까진 되지 않을 것 같은데요.”
하지만 난 슬쩍 필립의 말에 반박했다.
사실 그림이 팔리는 건 의외로 전시회가 시작하고 초반부가 많았다.
특히나 본격적인 전시회 시작 전, 이미 VIP들에게는 연락이 들어간다는 걸 알고 있었다. 그때가 가장 그림을 좋아하고 원하는 VIP들이 작품을 구매하는 시기였으니.
이런 내 말이 정답이라는 듯 필립 또한 맞장구를 쳤다.
“물론 그럴 가능성이 큽니다. 그래서 저희가 협의하고 싶은 건 뉴욕 전시회에서입니다.”
뉴욕 전시회라니. 그게 무슨 뜻인지 모르겠다. 내 의문 어린 눈빛을 본 필립은 좀 더 구체적으로 설명을 이었다.
“뉴욕에서 할 전시회에 들어가기 전, 작가님과 다시 그림 가격에 대한 협상을 했으면 합니다만.”
“그림의 가격을요?”
“예. 이미 서울 전시회는 계약 사항이 복잡해 수정하기 어려우니. 뉴욕 전시회라도 고치자는 게 저희의 입장입니다.”
그림의 가격은 나 혼자 정하는 게 아니었다. 특히나 이번처럼 대규모 개인전의 경우, 그림에 대해 작가인 내가 가져가는 건 가격의 6할. 즉 60%였다.
그 외 40%를 라고시안과 홍림에서 나눠서 가져간다고 알고 있었다. 한쪽은 내 전속 소속사로서 보조를 했고. 나머지는 대관과 홍보를 해 주었기에.
그나마도 이게 재계약을 통해 조건이 좋아진 것이었다. 어지간한 화가들은 5할 혹은 그 이하 정도만 가져간다고 알고 있었으니.
그런 의미에서 그림 가격을 바꾸자는 제안은 라고시안도 할 수 있었으며, 나 또한 가능했다.
“새로운 가격이라…….”
“예. 한국에서도 이미 이렇게나 팔린 그림입니다. 그러니 조절이 필요하죠.”
그러면서 필립은 책상 위에 놓인 종이를 손으로 가리켰다. 거기엔 아까 내가 본 대로 붉은색으로 체크 표시가 되어 있는 그림들이 있었다.
이미 제 주인을 찾아간 그림들. 거길 손으로 톡톡 친 그는 입꼬리를 올렸다.
“미국에서 이 가격에 내어놓았다간 오픈 런 때 끝날 겁니다.”

무슨 쇼핑몰의 세일 행사에서나 들어 볼 법한 말이 내 전시회에서 튀어나온 날이었다.
그의 말을 해석하자면, 대충 첫날에 모든 그림이 팔린다는 뜻이었으니.
‘이 작품이 하루에 다 팔리면…….’
대충 속으로 계산을 끝낸 난 침을 꿀꺽 삼켰다.
전생의 기억 때문일까. 조선에서 먹고살기 위해 허덕였던 나에겐 이 금액은 때때로 참 비현실적이었다.
“그 정도예요? 10억 원인데?”
10억 원이면 내가 좋아하는 아이스크림을 수없이 많이 살 수 있는 돈이었다. 아니, 그 정도면 어지간한 아이스크림 가게를 통째로 구입하는 것도 가능한 돈이었으니.
그런데 필립은 미국의 미술 시장은 이 돈을 무슨 껌값으로 본다는 어투로 이야길 이어갔다.
“현재 기준으로 한국 돈 10억 원이면, 미국 달러 80만 달러 정도 됩니다.”
“……그렇죠?”
갑자기 환율을 말하는 필립을 향해 난 애매하게 맞장구쳤다. 이 소리를 왜 하는지 이때까지만 해도 알 수 없었기에.
“라고시안의 갤러리엔 이미 작가님의 작품이 걸려 있었죠. 당연히 그에 대한 문의가 이미 있었고요.”
“설마…….”
“예. 영화가 채 나오기도 전부터 이미 50만 달러 이상을 부른 사람이 많습니다.”
50만 달러. 대략 6억 원 이상의 돈을 부르며 이미 사겠다고 말한 사람이 많다는 소리였다.
‘그림 판매에 대한 문의가 있었다는 건 알고 있었는데.’
라고시안의 홈페이지 등을 통해 내 그림에 대한 정보를 물어본 사람이 있다는 것.
그 정도는 이미 얼핏 과거에 들어서 알고 있었다.
심지어 에일대학교의 교수님까지도 농담 삼아 내 그림을 구하기 어렵다고 말했을 지경이었으니까.
그러나 그 정도로 구체적인 액수까지 제시한 사람이 있을 줄은 몰랐다. 그것도 무려 6억 원이나 되는 돈을 내밀면서 말이다.
“미국의 수집가들은 한국의 수집가들에 비해 작품에 지갑을 아끼지 않습니다, 작가님.”
“…….”
“그런 그들의 눈에 작가님의 그림은 너무 저렴해 보일 것이니…….”
필립은 그거만은 막고 싶다는 듯 눈빛을 빛냈다.
“이전에 논의했던 정도의 가격으로 하는 게 어떨까 합니다만.”
현 가격에서 대략적으로 두 배를 올린 금액. 그게 라고시안이 내게 처음 제시한 그림의 가치였다.
다시 말해 20억 원대로 평균 그림 가격을 상향하자는 소리였다.
이 순간 난 문득 든 의문이 있었다. 내 뉴욕 전시회는 서울 전시회가 끝난 후 거의 곧바로 이어져 있었다.
이래도 이게 가능하다는 소리인가?
“그런데 한국과 미국의 그림 가격이 그렇게 달라도 되는 거예요?”
“안 될 게 뭡니까?”
“제가 같은 물건을 사는데, 나라 차이로 인해 달라지면, 뭔가 화가 날 것 같은데요.”
이미 몇몇 사례들이 한국에 있었다. 외국에서보다 대한민국에서 더 비싸게 파는 일부의 물건들. 그것들에 대한 비판을 종종 목격했으니까.
“상관없습니다. 그래도 살 테니까요. 그리고 비싼 가격에 살 수 있는 사람들이 많은 곳에 더 비싸게 파는 건 나쁜 게 아니죠.”
그야말로 지극히 상업적인 필립의 이야기였다. 내가 이 이상 뭐라고 하기 전 필립은 웃으며 이런 이야길 덧붙이기도 했다.
“하물며 작가님께서는 한국인이시니, 한국에서 좀 싸게 팔고, 미국에서 정가에 판다고 뭐라고 할 사람이 있을 리가요.”
“그렇게 생각할 수도 있겠군요.”
“그게 사실이니까요.”
필립의 말에 납득한 나는 결국 고개를 끄덕였다. 이 정도로 다른 이들의 반응이 뜨겁다면, 그림의 가격을 올리는 것도 나쁘지 않으리라.
하지만 내가 대답을 머뭇거리자 필립의 설득은 이어졌다.
“사실 작가님의 걱정도 이해가 됩니다.”
“제 걱정이요?”
“미래에 작가님의 작품 가치가 어찌 될지 모르기 때문에 걱정하시는 거 아닙니까?”
그건 아니었다. 내가 원하는 건 적절한 가격에 작품을 팔아 많은 이들이 내 그림을 감상할 수 있는 것이었기에.
그러나 필립의 말은 끝난 게 아니었다.
“물론 몇몇 화가들이 터무니없는 가격에 그림을 판매해…… 이후 순식간에 그 가치가 곤두박질치는 경우가 없는 건 아닙니다.”
한때 천장을 모르고 솟아올랐던 작품의 가격도 시간이 지나면 변할 수 있는 게 이 세계였다.
결국 그림을 원하는 사람이 많으면 가격이 비싸지고, 적으면 가격이 내려가는 게 이치였으니까.
“허나, 그 경우는 작가님의 것과 다릅니다.”
“제 경우랑 다르다니요?”
이건 좀 궁금했다. 라고시안이 그렇게 그림의 가격 변동 폭이 큰 작가들에게서 각각 타당한 원인을 찾았다는 소리였으니까.
“억지로 가격을 올린 경우가 이에 해당됩니다. 소위 말하는 거품이죠.”
거품. 실질적인 가치보다 과대평가되었다는 뜻.
안 그래도 내가 염두에 두고 있는 부분과 일맥상통했다. 순식간에 오른 가격은 때때로 과한 거품을 형성하는 법이었으니.
정말도 사람들이 이 정도로 내 그림을 원하는지. 이게 다른 이의 욕망을 자극하고 호기심을 피어오르게 만드는지.
늘 내가 고민하는 부분이 이쪽이었으니까.
속으로 생각하는 사이에도, 필립은 누군가를 떠올린 듯 살짝 인상까지 찌푸리며 입을 열었다.
“몇몇 뭘 모르는 사람들이 억지로 가격을 올려 돈 좀 만져 보려고 하는데……. 그건 오래가기 힘듭니다.”
그 말에는 나도 고개를 끄덕였다.
‘가짜는 언젠가 녹이 스는 법이지.’
사람의 눈은 생각보다 비슷했다. 실질적으로 인간을 끄는 매력이 없는 작품을 가짜로 귀하게 만들어 봤자 오래가지 않았다.
이건 조선에서도 비슷했다. 억지로 명성을 올려 고귀하게 만들면 뭐 하는가. 결국 시간이 흐르면 다 제자리를 찾아가는 것을.
“그러니 그쪽은 되도록 안 배우시는 게 좋습니다. 그런 의미에서 작가님은 참 안심이시죠.”
“……가격을 안 올리려고 해서요?”
“아하하하하, 그것보다 진짜 그림만 좋아하시는 게 눈에 보이셔서요.”
“제가요?”
“예, 경매고 뭐고. 그쪽보단 본인이 원하는 그림을 그리시는 게 작가님 아니십니까.”
“그건…….”
“상업성보단 작품성을 좇는 건 위험하긴 합니다만. 작가님의 경우 그게 마침 대중성과 맞닿아 있으니 딱 좋죠.”
어쩐지 얼굴이 뜨거워지는 기분이었다. 가끔 필립은 이렇게 내게 낯 뜨거워지는 칭찬을 종종 하곤 했다.
미국인이기 때문일까. 그는 칭찬에 절대 인색하지 않았다. 연신 수염 없는 턱을 쓰다듬은 난 재빨리 말을 돌렸다.
이대로 있었다간 칭찬을 얼마나 들을지 몰랐기에.
“가격 협상이야. 전시회 끝난 다음에 하면 되는 거니…… 다 끝난 거죠?”
“그건 그때 가서 해도 됩니다만, 지금 하셔야 하는 것도 있습니다. 작가님.”
그러나 필립의 용건은 아직 끝나지 않은 듯 보였다. 그의 두꺼운 서류 가방에서 전에 없던 두툼한 서류가 튀어나왔으니까.
‘어째 오늘의 서류 가방이 유난히 무거워 보이더라니. 이런 게 안에 있었을 줄이야.’
뭔가 사진도 잔뜩 들어가 있는 것이 굉장히 정형화된 보고서로 보였다. 빽빽한 글씨를 언뜻 본 난 우선 질문부터 던졌다.
“이게 뭔가요?”
“오대전자에서 정식으로 제안서가 하나 왔습니다.”
“오대전자요?”
대한민국에서 오대전자를 모르는 사람은 없을 것이었다. 어지간한 가전제품은 그곳에서 죄다 나왔으니.
‘너트뷰에서 이 나라의 수출 10분의 1을 넘게 차지한다고 본 적이 있지.’
세계적인 반도체 기업이기도 한 오대전자. 그러나 내게 익숙한 건 반도체가 아닌 스마트폰이었다.
우리 가족은 나를 포함해 오대전자의 폰을 사용한 지 오래였다. 부모님이 자연스럽게 권하신 스마트폰. 그게 편하기에 계속 오대전자의 물건을 사용 중이었기에.
그런 오대전자에서 내게 제안서라니. 뭐가 왔다는 것일까.
“제안서요?”
“예, 작가님의 이름값을 본격적으로 빌려 보겠다는 것입니다.”
그 말에 난 문서의 가장 윗부분에 있는 제목부터 읽어 보았다.
“아트 콜라보레이션?”
“혹시 뭔지 아시나요?”
“대충은 알고 있는데요.”
“그럼 제가 간단히 설명을 해 드리겠습니다.”
과연 필립의 설명은 명확하면서도 간결했다. 요약하면 각 기업이 특색 있는 제품을 노리며, 다양한 분야의 예술가들과 협업을 한다는 것이었다.
그렇게 탄생된 제품은 때때로 그 기업의 그해 매출을 책임지곤 한다며 설명을 마친 필립이었다.
“그쪽에서도 작가님의 작품 이미지를 제품 속에 녹이길 바라더군요.”
“아하.”
“이런 제안이 언젠가는 올 줄 알았습니다만…….”
“그래요?”
“예, 미국의 화가들은 꽤 많이 하거든요.”
“라고시안의 다른 화가들도 많이 했나요?”
“……그건 아닙니다만. 가끔 했죠.”
“가끔이요?”
“이런 제품의 이미지에 맞는 화가들은 또 따로 있다 보니.”
말끝을 흐리던 그는 금세 말을 돌렸다. 꽤 티가 나는 행동이었음에도 난 조용히 귀를 기울였다.
“흠흠, 어쨌든 유럽의 다른 예술가들은 종종 이런 협업을 많이 합니다.”
“오대전자는 만드는 게 꽤 많잖아요. 그중 뭔 제품에 대해 콜라보 제안이 온 건데요?”
“반도체를 할 리는 없지 않겠습니까. 이런 건 완제품에 하는 법이니.”
“설마…….”
“예, 내후년도 출시 예정인 스마트폰. 그 제품과의 아트 콜라보를 원하더군요.”
