99화 끈질긴 진상?
에드워드 감독님과의 영상 통화는 빨리 연결되었다. 이쯤 되면 거의 날 기다리시고 있었던 게 분명했다.
[작가님! 오랜만입니다.]“감독님, 안녕하세요. 목소리가 훨씬 좋아지셨네요. 얼굴도 좋아 보이시고요.”
마지막 통화가 병원이었다. 그 당시에는 입원하신 상태로 수술을 바로 하셨기 때문일까. 걸걸한 목소리로 기침까지 하시는 모습에 참으로 걱정을 많이 했었다.
그런데 이제 보니 훨씬 나아지신 것 같아서, 다행이라는 마음이 먼저 들었다.
서로의 안부를 잠시 확인한 후, 역시나 감독님께서는 곧바로 본론을 꺼내 드셨다. 성격이 시원시원하신 건 수술 후에도 여전하신 모양이었다.
[혹시 나중에 뉴욕에 오실 때, 가능하시면 제게 시간을 좀 길게 내주실 수 있을까 해서요.]“시간이요?”
[예, 미국에 계시는 기간 중 하루나 이틀 정도 괜찮으신가 해서요.]확실히 온전하게 하루나 이틀을 빼는 건 쉽지 않은 일이긴 했다. 요즘같이 학업부터 시작해 각종 작품 활동으로 바쁜 내 입장상 말이다.
하지만 이번 전시회를 계기로 어차피 미국에 가는 것. 사람들을 두루 만나기로 한 나였다. 그 시간 중 일부를 에드워드 감독님에게 시간을 내는 건 그리 어려운 일이 아니었으니.
“제가 마침 미국을 가서 가능은 한데요.”
[오오오, 그레잇! 정말 잘되었군요. 언제 오시는 겁니까]“3일 후에 뉴욕에 전시회 때문에 가는데……. 무슨 일이신 거예요?”
한동안 병원에 계셨던 에드워드 감독님. 겨우 복귀하셨으니, 분명 할 일이 많으실 터였다.
나 못지않게 바쁘실 게 분명한 분이 이렇게 말하는 걸 보니, 뭔가 중요한 일인 게 분명했다.
[우선 제 작품 성적에 대한 감사를 드리려고요. 작가님께서 잘 그려 주신 그림의 영향이 컸습니다.]“아, 그거야 감독님께서 더 잘하신 거죠.”
솔직히 영화 자체가 재미있었다. 물론 영화 속에서 워낙 그림이 임팩트 있게 나온 건 사실이었다. 그 덕분에 내 그림에 대한 관심도도 올라갔으니까.
하지만 영화를 흥미롭게 만드신 건 명확한 감독님의 실력이셨다. 그로 인해 덩달아 나까지 잘된 느낌이었다.
[아하하, 이거 감사한 말씀이군요. 작가님에게 그런 말씀을 들으니 더 기쁩니다.]영상 속에서 호쾌하게 웃음을 터뜨린 감독님. 미소를 지으신 채 바로 내게 연락을 요청하신 이유를 말하셨다.
[사실 영화를 보고, 작가님을 만나 뵙고 싶어 하는 친구들이 몇 명 있습니다.]“친구들이요?”
[예, 업계 관계자들끼리야 다 알음알음 볼 수 있지만…… 작가님의 경우 그렇지 않으니까요.]그제야 난 에드워드 감독님이 뭘 말씀하시는 건지 알아차렸다. 아니나 다를까, 감독님께서는 내게 사람을 소개해 주겠다고 이야기를 꺼내셨다.
[아무래도 분야도 다르실뿐더러 아직 미성년자이시니, 제게 다리를 놓아 달라는 친구들이 많습니다.]“아하.”
이쯤 되자 이제 슬슬 나도 호기심이 피어올랐다. 에드워드 감독님의 지인이라니. 그것도 업계의 관계자면 누군지 짐작도 가지 않았다. 그랬기에 이런 질문도 할 수 있었다.
“대충 누군지 말씀해 주실 수 있나요?”
[아하하, 그건 아직 비밀입니다. 꽤 유명한 친구들이라는 말만 하고 싶군요.]“유명한 친구들이라…….”
그렇게 말해도 난 잘 알 수 없었다. 미술 쪽에 대한 것을 빼고는 내 모든 상식은 아직 턱없이 부족했다.
수백 년 앞선 미술에 대해 배우는 것만해도 충분히 벅찼으니까. 심지어 조선에서는 조선을 비롯해 청과 왜의 미술 정도만이 전부였다.
그러나 이 시대는 세계 곳곳에서 뿜어져 나오고 있는 미술에 대해 공부하고 알아야 하는 시기 아닌가. 당연히 내가 우선적으로 배우는 분야는 이쪽에 초점이 맞춰 있었다.
아마 감독님이 말씀하시는 인물은 대부분 영화계 인사일 게 분명했으니. 유명하다고 해도 연예계 쪽 인물을. 그것도 한국이 아닌 미국 쪽 사람들을 내가 잘 알 리가 없었다.
[더 자세한 건 만나서 이야기해 드리고 싶습니다.]확실히 감독님의 말씀이 옳았다. 저렇게 이야기하시니, 궁금해서라도 만나려는 의지가 생기지 않는가.
또한 이런 건 직접 만나서 하는 게 좋았다. 아무래도 내가 옛날 사람이라서 그런지는 모르겠지만.
“네에, 알겠습니다. 그렇게 하시죠. 그럼 제가 뉴욕에 도착하면 바로 연락드리겠습니다.”
그 뒤로도 우린 꽤 길게 영상 통화를 했다. 주로 내가 지금 하고 있는 일들과 감독님이 하는 일들에 관해서였다.
그 덕분일까. 미국에 가서 에드워드 감독님을 다시 만나는 건 상당한 기대가 되었다.

할아버지 부부와 함께하는 여행길. 내가 막 태어났을 때와 달리 이제는 꽤 연세가 있으신 할아버지와 할머니셨다.
그랬기에 난 최고로 편안하게 미국을 가기를 바랐다. 안 그래도 지구 반대편에 있는 나라로, 가는데 힘이 드는 곳 아닌가.
더군다나 원래 계획에 없었지만 내 보호자로 가시는 거니, 당연히 최고를 해 드려야만 했다.
그런 이유로 난 꽤나 비싼 비행깃값을 시원하게 지불했다. 즉, 난생처음으로 퍼스트 클래스 좌석을 타 볼 수 있었다.
“내가 윤성이 덕분에 퍼스트도 타 보는구나.”
신기해하시며 여기저기 구경하시는 할머니. 그러더니 내게 고개를 기울여 고맙다는 인사를 하시는 게 아닌가.
“어? 할머니도 처음이세요?”
그에 나 또한 옆에 앉아 계신 할머니에게 작게 소곤거렸다. 나야 아직 태어난 지 20년도 안 되었으니 그렇다고 쳐도, 할머니도 처음이시라니. 분명 할아버지 따라서 꽤 비행기 많이 타 보신 거로 아는데?
“처음이야. 아마 네 할아버지도 이건 처음일걸?”
“정말요?”
“그럼. 비즈니스까지는 몇 번 타 본 걸로 아는데, 퍼스트는 처음일 게다.”
“크음.”
우리가 작게 소곤거린다고 해서 옆자리까지 안 들리는 건 아니었으니. 나와 할머니의 대화를 들은 할아버지께서는 연신 헛기침을 하셨다.
‘부정을 하지 않으시는 걸 보니, 정말인 모양이네.’
의외이긴 했다. 할아버지 또한 이 나라에선 둘째가라면 서러울 추상화의 대가 아닌가.
그런데 그런 분이 퍼스트 좌석에 타 보지 못해 설레는 모습을 보이시다니. 내가 직접 보지 않았다면, 상상하기 어려운 모습이긴 했다.
“근데 왜 처음이신 거예요?”
묘하게 내 눈을 피하는 할아버지 대신 난 할머니에게 질문을 던졌다.
외국에 종종 나가시는 할아버지라면 분명 퍼스트를 꽤 타 보셨을 거라고 여겼으니까. 물론 비용이 비싼 건 사실이었다.
하지만 할아버지가 누군가. 할아버지 정도면 소속 화랑에서 퍼스트를 지원해 줬을 법했다.
사실 나 또한 이걸 온전히 내 돈으로 샀다고 하기 어려웠으니까. 라고시안이 일부 지원해 주었기에 더 시원하게 구입할 수 있었다.
이런 내 의문을 알아차린 듯 할머니께서는 웃으면서 이야기를 꺼내셨다.
“뻔하지. 네 할아버지는 이거 퍼스트 탈 돈으로 현지에서 맛있는 거 먹자는 주의거든.”
“그래요?”
“아마도 이번 것도 윤성이 네가 산 게 아니었으면, 왜 퍼스트냐고 했을 양반이다. 차라리 그 돈으로 고급 호텔 식당을 가겠다고 했겠지.”
그랬을 할아버지가 손자가 산 거라 별말 없이 기뻐하고 계시다는 소리셨다.
‘역시나 우리 할아버지.’
그런 할아버지의 마음. 그리고 이걸 이렇게 말씀해 주시는 할머니의 심정까지. 이 모든 걸 모조리 잘 느낄 수 있었다.
그 덕분일까. 이번 미국행이 어렸을 때, 할아버지와 간 미국행보다 더 즐거울 거란 느낌이 들었다.

즐거운 기분으로 출발했어도 장시간 비행은 힘들었다.
‘으으. 매번 비행기를 탈 때마다 느끼는 거지만, 이 짓도 쉬운 건 아니네.’
조선에서는 감히 올 생각도 못 했던 곳. 그게 아메리카 대륙이었으며, 미국이란 나라였다. 특히나 뉴욕은 미국 내에서도 동부에 있는 곳이었으니, 한국에서 더 멀긴 했다.
이 시대에 다시 태어났기에 이렇게 십수 시간 만에 올 수 있는 귀한 곳. 그게 뉴욕이라는 도시였으니까.
문제는 올 때마다 꽤 힘들다는 것에 있었다. 제아무리 퍼스트 클래스라고 해도 장시간 비행이 힘든 건 같았다.
뻐근해진 어깨를 돌리며 꽤 긴 출국 심사를 통과했다. 그렇게 비행기에서 내리고 밖에 처음으로 나와서 마주한 사람. 그는 편한 복장을 한 필립이었다.
놀랍게도 이 사람은 나보다 먼저 뉴욕에 갔다. 그리고 이렇게 날 마중까지 나온 것이었다.
“……안 피곤해요?”
그 엄청나게 강도 높은 일정을 본 난 필립에게 이렇게 물을 수밖에 없었다. 나라면 저건 절대 못 했을 테니까.
나보다 고작 며칠 전에 여기 와서 이렇게 나까지 마중 나오다니. 그야말로 철인이 따로 없었다.
“괜찮습니다, 작가님. 그보다 정말 바로 가실 겁니까?”
“예, 전시회가 코앞이잖아요. 점검해야죠.”
내가 이 먼 이국땅에 온 이유가 뭐겠는가. 그것도 이런 장시간의 고된 비행까지 해 가며.
바로 전시회 때문이었다. 만날 사람이 아무리 많다고 해도 가장 중요한 건 전시회란 뜻이었다.
“할아버지, 할머니. 전 필립과 일 좀 하다 갈게요. 두 분은 호텔에 먼저 가 계세요.”
“우리도 같이 가도 되는데…….”
“저도 잠깐만 들렸다가 바로 갈 거예요. 여럿이 우르르 가는 것보다 이게 나을 것 같아서요.”
내 말에 두 분은 납득하신 듯 고개를 끄덕이셨다. 그러더니 신신당부를 전하는 것도 잊지 않으셨다.
“그럼 조심히 다녀오거라. 혹시나 우리가 전화하면 꼭 받고.”
“예, 걱정하지 마세요.”
“그리고 가는 길에 네 엄마와 아빠에게도 전화해. 잘 도착했다고는 말해 줘야지.”
“네, 지금 차 안에 들어가서 바로 할게요.”
두 분을 먼저 호텔에 모셔다드린 우리는 다시 차를 타고 뉴욕에 있는 라고시안 갤러리로 향했다.
물론 간단하게 부모님께 통화하는 걸 잊지 않았다. 그 조선에서조차 꼬박꼬박 부모님께 문안 인사를 잘만 드렸던 나였다. 고작해야 전화 통화하는 게 뭐가 어렵겠는가.
확실히 전화를 하면서 오니 더 빠르게 느껴졌다. 이제 얼마 후면, 내 작품이 전시될 갤러리. 눈 깜짝할 새 그곳에 도착했으니까.
그런데 어째 조용할 것이란 내 예상과 달리, 그 안에서 들려오는 소리가 심상치 않았다.
“그러니까. 딱 3일이면 되잖아.”
걸걸한 목소리의 주인공이었다. 그 낮은 음성 속에 담긴 짜증은 지금 그가 꽤 화가 나 있다는 걸 알려 주었다.
“안 된다는 거 아시지 않습니까. 저희에게 이렇게 말해도 소용없어요.”
그 중저음에 반대하는 목소리의 주인공은 가냘팠다. 가느다랗고 높은 목소리로 난 말하는 이가 여자란 걸 알 수 있었다.
두 남녀의 대화는 나와 필립이 가까이 다가갈수록 더 큰 소리로 들려왔다.
“아니, 내가 라고시안 대표에게도 말해 놓겠다니까? 일단 치우지만 말라는 건데. 그게 그렇게 어려워?”
“당장 지금부터 준비해야 합니다. 계속 못 치우게 하셔서 이미 많이 늦었어요.”
보아하니 분위기가 심상치 않았다. 하지만 도무지 뭔 일이 벌어지고 있는지는 파악하기 어려웠다.
내가 제대로 된 상황을 파악하기 위해 애를 쓰고 있는 사이. 갑자기 인상을 찌푸린 사람이 있었으니.
“뭐야, 아직도 저러고 있는 거야?”
옆에서 들려오는 필립의 음성. 그 안에 담긴 어처구니없다는 어조에 난 필립이 뭔가 알고 있음을 알아차릴 수 있었다.
“저거…… 뭔 상황인지 알겠어요?”
만약 잘 알고 있다면 난 설명을 요구할 생각이었다.
그러나 필립은 내가 뭐라고 더 말하기도 전에 바로 소매부터 걷어붙이는 게 아닌가.
그러더니 휙 날 돌아본 채로 무시무시한 기백으로 입을 열었다.
“잠시만 기다리시죠, 작가님. 제가 당장 해결을 하고 오겠습니다.”
“무슨…….”
“뭔 진상 짓을 이리도 끈질기게 하는 거야? 알 만한 사람이.”
내가 채 말릴 새도 없었다. 혼자서 중얼거린 필립은 성큼성큼 상대에게 다가갔다.
