“맞습니다. 연주 스케줄 때문에 콩쿠르 결선 무대를 직접 가서 보지 못한 게 억울할 정도로요. 다행히 저희와 협연을 하게 됐으니 그 아쉬움을 조금은 달랠 수 있게 됐지만요.”
오스트리아 제1의 오케스트라이자, 세계 제1의 오케스트라라 불려도 손색이 없는 교향악단.
빈 무지크페라인 콘서트홀을 거점으로 사용하고 있는 빈 필하모닉의 수석 지휘자와 악장은 담담히 대화를 이어갔다.

빈 필의 스케줄은 가히 살인적이었다.
하지만 빈 필에 소속된 그 누구도 이에 불만을 표하지 않았다.
만약 이틀 뒤에 새로운 레파토리의 곡을 연주해야 하더라도.
스케줄이 갑자기 바뀌어 2, 3일 연속으로 공연을 해야 하더라도.
빈 필은 언제나 최고의 연주를 관객들에게 선보일 뿐이었다.
단원들 한 명, 한 명이 세계적인 음악가라 할 수 있는 빈 필에게 있어 연주는 숨 쉬는 것과 같았고, 당연히 해내야 하는 의무와도 같은 거였다.
어떤 새로운 레파토리를 가지고 오더라도 하루에서 이틀 정도의 연습 시간만 주어진다면, 빈 필은 그 연주를 음악으로 만들어 낼 수 있는 자신감도 있었다.

수많은 연주 경험으로 그 어떤 오케스트라보다도 콧대가 높은 오케스트라.
그런 빈 필의 지휘자와 악장이 소년의 연주를 보고 사실상 극찬을 하고 있었다.
“14살이라는 나이에······. 벌써 일정 수준 이상의 성취를 이루어냈군요. 다른 거장분들과 비교해도 될 법한 고유한 음색을 가지고 있기도 하고요.”
“특히 기교적인 면보다도 내면의 깊이가 놀랍습니다. 연주로 서사를 쌓아나갈 줄 아는 아이네요.”
“어떤 독특한 경험이라도 했던 걸까요?”
“제가 듣기로는 비행기 추락 사고를 겪었다고 들었습니다. 다행히 사망자는 한 명도 없었다고 하더군요.”
“아~ 뉴스에서 본 적이 있는 것 같네요.”
“그때의 경험이 저 아이에게 큰 영향을 끼쳤을지도 모르겠습니다.”
“생사를 경험했다라······. 평범한 경험은 아니겠네요. 그런 경험 이후 놀라운 연주를 보여주는 연주자들을 종종 봐왔으니까요.”
빈 필의 수석 지휘자 폴 아스킨.
그는 티비 속 소년이 연주하고 있는 피아노 협주곡의 피날레를 지켜보기 시작했다.
⌜퀸 엘리자베스⌟의 대미를 장식하는 브뤼셀 갈라 콘서트.
새로운 피아니스트의 탄생과 함께, 연주 여행의 시작을 알리는 그 공연이 화려하게 마무리됐다.

러시아의 거장 바샤노프와 대만의 거장 랑위가 ⌜퀸 엘리자베스⌟의 진행자와 가벼운 소감을 나누며 소년의 여행에 축복을 바라는 말을 건넨다.
빈 필의 악장 안드레 호벤은 자리에서 슬쩍 일어났다.
“저 아이가 어떤 식으로 차이콥스키를 연주하는지 조금 알 것 같네요. 내일 아침 일찍부터 현 5부를 연습시켜 놓도록 하겠습니다. 지휘자님께서 오시는 오후 1시까지는 어느 정도 하모니가 잡혀 있을 겁니다.”
“항상 감사합니다.”
“별말씀을요. 참. 그리고 지휘자님, 오늘 뒤풀이에는 참가하실 겁니까?”
“저희 단원의 송별회인데 당연히 가야죠. 단, 밤에 악보 볼 시간이 필요해서 오래 마시지는 못하겠지만요.”
“하하. 그건 저희도 마찬가지입니다. 가볍게 맥주 한 잔 정도만 기울일 겁니다.”
자리를 정리하고 일어나는 두 사람.
아스킨 지휘자와 호벤 악장은 빈의 펍으로 장소를 옮겼다.
도착한 펍은 벌써부터 시끌벅적했다.
빈 필에서 10년을 함께한 첼로 제2수석의 송별회인 만큼, 대부분의 빈 필 단원들이 이 펍을 가득 채우고 있었다.
첼로 제2수석은 굉장한 인물이었다.
기존에 활동을 이어가던 미국 오케스트라를 과감히 그만두고, 50이 넘는 나이에 빈 필에 도전에서 당당히 빈 필의 제2수석 오디션에 합격했다.

젊고 힘이 넘치는 연주자들을 모두 제치고, 50대의 여성 연주자가 당당히 빈 필에 들어오게 된 것이다.
지난 10년간, 첼로 수석과 함께 빈 필 첼로 파트의 실력을 한껏 끌어올린 그녀.
작년 말에 그녀가 빈 필을 그만둔다는 이야기를 처음 꺼냈을 때, 아스킨 지휘자와 호벤 악장, 첼로 수석이 모두 그녀의 결정을 만류했을 만큼 그녀는 빈 필에서 중요한 인물이었다.
하지만 그녀는 고향으로 돌아가 노쇠한 부모님을 보필하고 싶다고 했고, 고향에서 소소하게 아이들을 가르치는 일을 하고 싶다는 의견을 제차 피력하는 바람에 결국 빈 필을 떠나기로 한 것이다.
조금 멀찍이서 그녀를 바라보던 아스킨 지휘자는 아쉽다는 표정으로 맥주를 한 모금 마셨다.
“하다못해 그 아이와의 협연까지만이라도 함께 해줬으면 좋았을 텐데 말이죠.”
“그런데 그 공연은 갑자기 잡힌 공연이잖습니까. 그녀도 이런 멋진 협연이 남아있었다는 걸 몰랐을 겁니다. 그전에 내려버린 결정이니 어쩔 수가 없죠.”
“혹시 지금이라도 설득해볼 수 있을까요?”
“글쎄요. 말이야 꺼내 볼 수 있겠지만, 어렵지 않을까요. 지휘자님도 아시겠지만, 이번 일은······.”
아스킨 지휘자가 악장 대신 말을 잇는다.
“그녀가 고향으로 가고 싶어 하는 분명한 이유가 있으니까요. 그리고 악장님 말씀처럼 이미 내려진 결정이기도 하고요.”
인간은 아픔을 겪으며 살아간다.
그 아픔은 누군가에겐 작게 느껴질 수도, 누군가에겐 크게 느껴질 수도 있다.
첼로 제2수석 역시 아픔을 겪었고, 그에 파생되는 아픔도 겪었으며, 이제는 휴식이 필요할지도 모르는 나이가 되었다.

‘그래도 시도조차 안 해 볼 수는 없지.’

첼로 파트의 단원들이 지휘자를 보고 고개를 가볍게 숙였고, 첼로 제2수석도 살짝 고개를 숙였다.
“바쁘실 텐데 이렇게 와주셔서 감사합니다.”
“당연히 제가 와야 하는 자리였는걸요. 10년. 참으로 긴 세월이 빨리도 지나갔습니다.”
“지휘자님도 저와 비슷한 시기에 빈 필에 오셨었죠?”
“네. 저는 이제 막 11년이 됐죠. 제2수석님과 함께 빈 필을 만들어갔다고 해도 과언이 아니죠.”
하늘빛에 가까운 푸른 눈이 인상적인 그녀는 슬며시 미소를 지으며 대답했다.
“칭찬은 여전하시네요. 지휘자님께서 저를 선택해 주신 덕분에 빈 필과 함께 할 수 있었어요. 유럽의 중심에서 원(願)도 한(恨)도 없이 첼로를 켤 수 있었죠. 항상 감사하게 생각하고 있습니다.”
“제2수석님은 그만한 실력자였으니까요. 지금 이 시점에서 과거를 돌아본다고 하더라도 조금의 후회도 없는 선택이었습니다.”
“말씀만이라도 감사합니다.”
첼로 제2수석은 지휘자를 향해 살짝 고개를 숙인 뒤에 맥주를 쭈욱 마셨다.
아스킨 지휘자는 그녀와 함께, 이곳에 있는 단원들과 함께 만들어왔던 연주를 회상하며 말을 이어갔다.

“차이콥스키 ⌜피아노 협주곡 1번⌟. 지금 시대의 빈 필이 이미 수십 번은 연주해 온 레파토리입니다. 제2수석님 실력이라면 자다가도 쉽게 연주할 수 있는 곡이라고 할 수 있죠.”
“······.”
“유럽에 천재 피아니스트가 나타났습니다. 세기의 천재일지도 모르는 소년이요. 그리고 그 소년은 첫 번째 협연 상대로 빈 필을 선택해줬고요. 이 기회를 놓치실 겁니까? 은퇴를 잠시만 미루시면 되는데도요?”
첼로 제2수석은 아스킨 지휘자를 가만히 바라보다가 더욱더 깊게 미소를 지었다.
“맞아요. 그 아이는······. 정말로 대단한 연주자더군요.”
“네. 그래서 저도 제2수석님이 있는 빈 필에서 그 아이와 협주를 하고 싶은 겁니다. 빈 필 최고의 연주를 만들어 보고 싶어서요. 한 번의 공연이면 됩니다. 어렵겠습니까?”
“······.”
첼로 제2수석은 눈을 스르르 감고서 잠시 시간을 보냈다.
어떤 생각이 떠올랐다는 듯이 그녀는 깊게 숨을 들이마신 뒤에 내뱉었다.
그녀는 눈을 감은 채 대답했다.
“그 아이의 콩쿠르는 저도 전부 봤어요. 내면에 치유의 음색이 깃들어 있는 아이더군요. 참으로 놀라운 연주였죠.”
“그러니······.”
“그래서 어려울 것 같습니다. 오히려 제 동생이 더 생각나게 되어버려서요. 고향이 문득 그리워지기도 했고요. 지휘자님께는 정말 죄송하지만, 기존 제 결정대로 미국으로 돌아가고자 합니다.”
“그렇······ 습니까.”
“네. 이별의 아쉬움은 어떻게 해도 결국 아쉬움이 남게 되는 법이죠. 그러니 지금은······. 제가 이곳을 떠나야 할 때인 것 같습니다.”
첼로 제2수석은 아스킨 지휘자에게 손을 내밀었고, 폴 아스킨은 애써 미소를 지으며 그녀의 손을 잡았다.
“그동안 정말 감사했습니다. 아스킨 지휘자님.”
“그동안 함께 멋진 연주를 만들어주셔서 감사합니다······.”

“밀러 제2수석님. 당신은 빈 필 최고의 첼리스트였습니다. 이것만큼은 진심입니다.”
12년 전 불의의 비행기 사고로 동생을 잃은 뒤, 미국을 떠나 빈에서 연주 활동을 계속 이어갔던 그녀.
소피아 밀러는 옅은 미소를 지었다.

뤼카 누나는 괜히 내 옷깃을 정리해주며 슬픈 듯한 표정을 만들고 있었다.

“······ 앞으로 일 년 동안은 못 보겠네. 어쩌면 그 이상일지도 모르고.”
“그럴지도 모르죠. 누나나 저나 연주 스케줄이 잡혀있으니까요.”
“연주자 인생이라는 게 조금 서글픈 것 같기도 해. 어딘가에 정착하기는 힘드니까.”
“대신, 다양한 사람들을 만날 수 있잖아요. 누나랑 제가 브뤼셀에서 만났듯이요.”
“······.”
“맞죠? 그건 분명 장점이잖아요.”
“······.”
뤼카 누나는 나를 꼭 한 번 안고 나서 활짝 웃었다.
“그래. 너랑 수연이랑 내 친구까지도······. 이 모두를 만날 수 있게 된 건 다 음악 덕분이었지.”
“그래서 고맙죠. 그리고 연주를 했던 순간은 영원히 기억에 남잖아요. 그것도 고맙고요.”
“맞아. 보자르 콘서트홀에서 벽에 기대 네 연주를 듣던 때가 아직도 눈앞에 그려져. 이러고 있으면 서진이 네 연주가 귓가에서 들려오는 것만 같아.”
“저도 그래요. 누나가 연주했던 곡들은 금방 떠올릴 수 있거든요. 오랜 시간이 지나도 이 기억만큼은 그대로일 거예요.”
뤼카 누나는 괜스레 내 얼굴에 양손을 가져다 댔다가 손을 떼면서 말을 이어갔다.
“우리가 음악가라서 그런가? 조금 남다르게 음악으로 소통을 했던 것 같기도 하네?”
약간의 농담이 섞인 말.
하지만 나는 진지하게 고개를 끄덕였다.
“음악가는 음악으로 자신의 이야기를 하게 되어 있으니까요. 실제로 누나랑 많은 이야기를 나눴던 것 같아요. 음악가로서요.”
“그래······. 음악가······. 우리는 모두 음악가니까.”
뤼카 누나와 얼마간 이야기를 나눴을 때, 얀콥스키와 현주 누나, 터너, 퀸 엘리자베스 참가자들이 이곳 카페에 들렀다.
나와 작별 인사를 하기 위해서.
나는 미소를 지으며 그들과 담소를 나눴다.
시간이 됐다.
⌜Schmid⌟에서 준비해준 차량에 에어비앤비에 있던 짐들을 모조리 실었고, 가족들도 모두 오스트리아로 떠날 준비를 마쳤다.
뤼카 누나는 차에 탄 나를 향해 힘차게 손을 흔들어줬다.
나 또한, 나를 배웅 나와준 고마운 사람들을 향해 힘껏 손을 흔들어줬다.
옆에 앉아 있던 수연이도 내게 바짝 붙어서 내가 하는 행동을 따라 한다.
“잘 가!”
“빈에서 멋지게 연주하고!”
“다음에 보자!”
“이만 가볼게요. 다들 고마웠어요.”
“바이! 바이!”
조금은 아쉬운 듯.
조금은 허무한 듯, 차는 금세 출발해버렸다.
사랑하는 사람들과 헤어지게 되는 이 순간만큼은 적응이 잘되지 않는 것 같았다.
브뤼셀 시내에서 공항까지는 금방이었다.
퀸 엘리자베스 콩쿠르 운영팀에서 예상한 대로 공항은 인산인해였다.
먼저 기자님들이 굉장히 많았고, 브뤼셀에서 내 연주를 들었던 사람들이 공항을 가득 채우고 있었다.
그들 중에는 기억에 남는 이들도 많았다.
예선과 결선, 갈라 콘서트의 무대에서 관객들의 얼굴을 기억하기 위해 충분히 시간을 보냈던 만큼 내가 아는 얼굴들도 분명 있었다.
내게 응원을 보내주는 사람들.
나는 그들의 환호를 가슴에 품고 출국장 안으로 들어갔다.
출국장은 공항 입구보다 훨씬 한산했다.
그리고 그곳에서 약속했던 대로, 강유한 교수님과 리히터 선생님을 만날 수 있었다.
“밖에 인파가 대단하더구나.”
“고생이 많았다. 서진아.”
내 연주 여행의 실질적인 시작점이라고 할 수 있는, 빈 필 공연을 봐주시고 나서 한국으로 돌아가기로 한 강유한 교수님.
빈에서 약속이 있으시다는 리히터 선생님.
나는 그들과 함께 클래식 음악의 성지라고도 할 수 있는 오스트리아 빈으로 향했다.
