“물론 말씀해주시기 어려우면 굳이 이야기해주실 필요는 없어요. 그냥······. 아저씨도 저랑 똑같이 가족들이 보고 싶지 않을까, 하는 생각이 들었던 거거든요.”
모래사장에 앉아 생선을 손질하던 밀러 아저씨는 나를 가만히 바라보다가 피식 웃음을 터트렸다.
“일 년 사이에 다 컸네. 내 걱정까지 해주고 말이야.”
“원래 청소년기 아이들은 금방금방 크는 거라면서요? 그리고 무인도에 있는 사람이 저 말고 딱 한 명뿐이라 아무래도 신경이 쓰이더라고요.”
“말도 기가 막히게 잘하네.”
“칭찬이죠?”
“그래.”
“감사합니다.”

나는 밀러 아저씨 옆에 앉아 손질이 끝난 생선을 차곡차곡 정리해나갔고, 밀러 아저씨는 먼바다를 바라보며 이야기를 꺼내주셨다.
“아버지는 예전에 사고로 돌아가셨고, 어머니는 혼자 지내시긴 하는데 내가 종종 들리고 있지. 그리고······.”
밀러 아저씨는 미소를 지으셨다.
“나랑 4살 차이가 나는 누나가 한 명 있어. 미국의 한 오케스트라에서 첼리스트로 활동을 이어 나가고 있는 연주자야. 더할 나위 없이 내게 다정한 누나지.”
밀러 아저씨가 한창 어렸을 때.
미국의 한적한 시골 마을에서 태어난 밀러 아저씨가 집에서 심심해하고 있을 때면.
아저씨의 누나가 아저씨를 앉혀 놓고 첼로를 켜주곤 했었단다.
무척이나 포근하게 느껴졌던 선율.
아저씨는 누나를 잘 따랐고, 아저씨의 누나도 아저씨를 잘 챙겨줬었다고 한다.
아저씨가 피아노를 시작하게 된 이유도 누나 덕분이었다고 했다.
“첼로 연주를 듣다 보면 나도 모르게 졸 때가 있었어. 그 정도로 누나의 연주는 편안했으니까. 그때마다 누나는 내게 이불을 덮어주고 자장가를 불러주곤 했지. 그리고 내가 완전히 잠이 들었다고 생각이 되면 다시 연주를 시작했어. 내가 좋아하는 곡을 위주로 말이야. 그때 생각이 아직도 가끔씩 나.”
“무척 따뜻한 분이었네요.”
“그래. 그리고 그건 지금도 마찬가지야. 아마 많이 걱정하고 있을 거야. 신문 1면에 나올만한 사고를 동생이 겪었으니 오죽하겠어? 시간도 너무 많이 지났고. 사고 당사자보다 남겨진 사람들이 보통 더 마음을 쓰게 되는 법이니까. 물론 어머니도 걱정이 되고.”
씁쓸한 표정을 지으시는 밀러 아저씨.
나는 애써 위로의 말을 드려봤다.
“훗날 돌이켜보면 오히려 지금 이 순간이 재미있는 에피소드가 되어 있을 거예요. 하하 웃으며 지나갈 정도로요. 우린 이곳을 탈출하게 되어있잖아요? 나중에 아저씨 누나한테 오늘 이야기를 해주면, 분명 웃어주실 거예요. 그러니까 너무 걱정하지 마세요.”
“······ 그래. 분명 그렇게 되겠지. 분명 그런 날이 올 거야. 고맙다 서진아. 내가 너한테 위로를 다 받게 되는구나.”
“여긴 서로 돕고 살아야 하는 무인도잖아요. 이런 말을 주고받는 건 오히려 당연한 거죠. 나이 차이랑 상관 없이요.”

아저씨는 나를 지긋이 바라보다가 괜히 내게 바닷물을 튕겼다.
밀러 아저씨가 머쓱해졌을 때 자주 하는 행동.
그래서 이번엔 나도 지지 않았다.
“야! 옷 다 젖잖아!”
“나중에 말리면 되잖아요? 그리고 아저씨가 먼저 시작했거든요?”
“어쭈. 이게 컸다 이거지?”
“와악!”
바닷가에서 한동안 물놀이를 하게 된 우리는 흠뻑 젖은 채 집으로 돌아가게 됐다.
그날 저녁.
타닥타닥거리는 소리를 내고 있는 모닥불 앞에 앉아 생선을 구워 먹다가 나는 아저씨한테 꼭 물어봐야 했던 걸 물어봤다.
“그런데 아저씨 누나는 이름이 어떻게 되세요?”
“아, 내가 말을 안 해줬던가?”
“물장난치다가 이야기를 제대로 마무리 못 지었잖아요.”
밀러 아저씨는 내게 제일 큰 생선을 하나 건네주며 대답했다.
“우리 누나 이름은······.”

“소피아 밀러. 10년이 넘는 시간 동안 빈 필의 첼로 파트 한 자리를 책임져주신 분입니다.”
“······ 10년이요?”
“네. 첼로 제2수석으로서 빈 필이 내야 할 첼로의 음색을 만들어주신 분이기도 하고요.”
“······.”
“특히, 따뜻한 음색이 인상적인 연주자였습니다.”

“피아니스트님?”
나는 그제야 정신을 차릴 수 있었다.
“······ 정말 대단한 분이셨네요.”
“그렇죠. 그런데 아무리 그렇다고 하더라도 오케스트라에서 연주자 한 명이 빠진 걸 눈치챌 줄이야······. 진심으로 감탄했습니다.”
아스킨 지휘자님의 말이 끝나기 무섭게 빈 필의 수석 연주자님들도 한마디씩 거드신다.
“허허. 정말 천재는 천재구나. 어떻게 그걸 알아차렸는지······.”
“오히려 소문이 부족해 보일 정도네. 베토벤과 모차르트의 환생이라는 말이 더 이상 농담처럼 들리지는 않아.”
“14살에 이 정도라면······. 시간이 조금 더 지나면 어떤 수준의 연주를 보여줄지 상상도 안 가네.”
“실제로 지금 연주에서도 비르투오소적인 측면이 많이 보이고 있잖아. 어쩌면 훗날, 세기의 피아니스트로 남게 될지도 모르겠어.”
“우리 빈 필 입장에서는 무척 영광인 셈이네. 올해 최고의 피아니스트와 협연하게 됐으니 말이야.”
“그보다 밀러의 음색을 알아주는 아이가 있다니······. 이 이야기를 그녀에게 해준다면 무척 기뻐하겠어.”
“그렇겠네. 다음에 밀러한테 연락을 한번 해줘야겠다.”
“지금쯤 미국에 있으려나?”
“아마 아닐걸? 모레 밤 비행기라고 했거든.”
“그러면 이 아이와의 협연까지만 하고 빈 필을 떠났으면 더 좋았을 텐데. 조금은 아쉽게 됐네.”
“그래도 어쩔 수 없지. 이별은 언제나 아쉬움이 남게 되니까. 그래도 이 아이가 밀러의 첼로를 알아봐 준 게 진심으로 고맙긴 해.”

짧은 시간에 수많은 정보가 내 머릿속에 들어왔다.
특히 ‘밀러’라는 이름은 그 어떤 것보다 내게 강렬하게 다가왔다.
빈 필의 수석 연주자님들께서는 내게 한껏 칭찬을 해주신 다음 자리로 돌아가셨다.
지휘자님께서는 지휘대로 올라가 남은 리허설 준비를 시작하셨고, 나는 2, 3분 정도만 시간을 달라고 요청했다.
가져온 가방에서 애써 차이콥스키의 악보를 꺼냈다.
이미 완벽하게 암보가 끝나 더 이상 볼 필요는 없었지만, 내겐 정말로 시간이 필요했다.
‘만나게 되더라도······. 밀러 아저씨께서 말씀해 주셨던 미국의 그 오케스트라에서 만날 줄 알았는데······.’
밀러 아저씨가 내게 알려준 사실은 무려 12년 전의 일들이었다.

물론, 그 전부터 내 손은 피아노 건반 위의 허공을 유영하고 있었다.
지휘봉이 내려감과 동시에 내 손이 피아노 건반에 내리꽂힌다.

첫 번째 날 리허설이 모두 끝났다.
아스킨 지휘자님께서는 친절하시게도 우리 가족을 저녁 식사에 초대해주셨다.
클래식 음악에 대한 이야기를 나누며, 오늘 리허설에 대한 생각을 주고받으며, 레스토랑에서 나오는 코스 요리를 천천히 음미하며 먹었다.
꽤 오랜 시간 이어진 식사 끝에 우리 가족은 호텔로 돌아올 수 있었다.
오늘 하루는 어떻게 지나갔는지도 잘 모르겠다.

하루를 가만히 돌아보고 있자니 아침에 있던 일이 유독 도드라지게 떠올랐다.

나는 스마트폰으로 빈 필 공연 영상들을 뉴튜브에서 하나하나 찾아봤고, 얼마 지나지 않아 그곳에서 선생님의 모습을 발견할 수 있었다.

오늘 그녀를 지나쳐버렸다.

나는 냅킨을 주머니에 넣고, 뒤도 돌아보지 않은 채 말했다.
“빈의 야경이 이쁘더라고. 그래서 우리 수연이를 부르러 가야 하나 말아야 하나 고민하고 있었네.”
“그랬어?”
“응.”
“그러면 오빠. 나 조금만 도와줄 수 있을까? 나도 오빠랑 같이 야경이 보고 싶어서 그래.”
수연이가 내게 손을 뻗어온다.
뭔가 해서 발코니 상황을 살펴봤더니······.
‘여기서는 수연이가 야경을 볼 수 없겠구나. 수연이 키에 비해 난간이 꽤 높으니까.’
나는 주저함 없이 수연이에게 내 등을 내줬고, 수연이는 금방 등에 업혔다.

이내 야경이 잘 보인다고 내게 고맙다는 말을 해준다.
“대단한 것도 아닌데, 뭘.”
“아니야. 역시 오빠밖에 없어. 고마워. 이렇게 멋진 풍경을 보여줘서.”

내 마음속에서 이 대비가 마치 거울처럼 느껴졌다.

“그런데 내 친구한테 물어봤더니, 실제 연주랑 녹음 된 연주랑 차이가 많이 난다고 하던데? 실제 연주가 훨씬 낫다고 하더라고.”
“그건 셈여림 표현이 뛰어나다는 뜻이야. 실제 연주에서는 그 디테일이 전부 피아노로 표현되지만, 녹음으로는 아무래도 한계가 있거든.”
“맞아. 오히려 나도 그래서 더 기대 중이야. 아스킨 지휘자의 빈 필과 하모니를 어떻게 표현할지도 궁금하고.”
“14살의 천재 피아니스트. 어쩌면 세기의 천재가 클래식계에 등장한 걸지도 모르겠어.”

이내 출발하는 택시.
소피아 밀러는 담담히 창밖을 바라봤다.
빈의 마지막 모습을 기억하기 위해 그녀는 도시에 있는 모든 것들을 눈에 담았다.
진한 초록빛이 감도는 가로수와 알록달록한 화분.
고풍스러운 성당과 거대한 규모의 궁전.
그 아름다운 풍경들은 그녀의 푸른 눈에 반사되어 아른거리고 있었다.
택시 기사는 그녀를 백 밀러로 힐끗 쳐다보다가 입을 열었다.
“연주자이신가 보네요? 악기 케이스도 그렇고요.”

“기사님은 고향이 어디세요?”
“저는 오스트리아 남부 사람입니다. 프리에자흐라는 작은 도시 출신이죠.”
“프리에자흐. 저는 기회가 없어서 가보지는 못했네요.”
“정말 멋진 도시죠. 특히 가을 풍경이 기가 막혀요. 만약 여행을 가볼 생각이 있으시다면 꼭 가을에······.”
소피아는 사람들과 이야기하는 걸 좋아했다.
특히 아는 사람들과 오랜만에 만나 그간 있었던 일들을 주고받으며 차를 한 잔씩 하는 걸 즐겼다.
예전엔 동생과도 그렇게 지냈다.
LA와 뉴욕을 넘나들며 프로듀서로 활동했었던 마크.

소피아는 먼저 공항에 있는 카페에 들어갔다.
넉넉하게 시간을 잡고 공항에 온 만큼 여유를 부릴만한 시간이 어느 정도는 있었다.
어느새 오후 5시를 조금 넘긴 시간.
그 아이의 공연은 지금쯤 막 시작됐을 것이다.

소피아는 눈을 질끈 감았다.
“저기. 죄송한데 여권과 티켓을 먼저 보여주시겠습니까.”
출국장 입구에 서 있는 직원은 가만히 서 있는 소피아를 다시 한번 재촉했다.

“잠깐 돌아가 봐야 할 것 같아서요.”

소피아는 뒤를 돌아 성큼성큼 걸음을 옮겼다.
‘지금 와서 그 아이와 협연을 해보겠다는 생각은 없어.’
‘그건 빈 필과 그 아이에게 폐가 되는 행동이니까.’

공항을 빠져나와 벤 택시에 탄 그녀는 숨을 크게 내쉬었다.
